Title: UKGPL Season 31 (2017) Graduates Cup Works (67) - Zandvoort - Mar 12

Season 31 Works Trophy – Round 2 –  Zandvoort

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1967 season, the UKGPL season will take place on 10 of the 11 original circuits. For the third round of the season we go to Circuit Park Zandvoort in the Netherlands. On 7 August 1948, the first race was held on the new permanent Zandvoort circuit. Soon more races followed on the course, with the first official Formula 1 Grand Prix becoming a milestone in 1952. Up until the mid-eighties, heroes like Alberto Ascari, Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss, Graham Hill, Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, James Hunt, Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost braved the challenging course in the Dutch dunes and won at Zandvoort. After the Grand Prix of 1985, the Formula 1 left Zandvoort, but the seaside resort and its impressive race track were not forgotten. Many years after the last Grand Prix, the ‘racing drivers of the day’ still talk about their experience on the race track where the challenging corners ‘separated the men from the boys’..

I need a bit of help calculating points for car choices.
Before this race I have 15 tokens. For starting this race I will get 10 tokens. But for a car choice for this race, do I have 15 tokens or 25 tokens? For example can I chose Lotus for this race or not?

Syd: When making your car choice you include the points you already have saved up and the points you will receive in the race at hand.
So even if you have 0 points before the race you can still take anything up to and including the BT24 on the day. The only proviso as I understand it is that you must START the race to receive the extra 10 points in 'starting money'.

I'm debating whether to take a Waza for this round in respect to Surtees, although I've already planned out my chassis choices for the season and don't have many choices to switch at this stage...

Thanks. That clears it up.
I'll probably take the BRM to accumulate points for races I feel I have a better chance for a good result :).

Phew I am beat. That was an extremely enjoyable race. I've never really got on top of Zandvoort, but this race I feel as though I gave it the best I probably could ever do  :).

Managed to qualify 2nd on the grid and survived the first lap to hold 2nd place. Tristan seemed more confident on cold tyres (then again most racers do compared to me!  ::)) and pulled an early gap of a few seconds. Johnny O' was all over my gearbox in the early laps, until he made an error at the last turn leaving me to attempt to catch Tristan.

In the first half, he was pulling away slightly until about half-race distance. I think Tris must have made an error, as suddenly I gained 5 seconds in a lap and was within striking distance. The sight of the leader spurred me on, as I upped my pace to catch and eventually pass into Tarzan. Unusually for me, I was able to sustain my pace after passing Tris and pulled out a cushion and only a quick 360 at Tarzan one lap dented my momentum. By the end of it all, I won with a reasonable buffer to 2nd place which is a race occurrence for me and the Works trophy  :).

Very happy to have won after a poor start to the season. I was lucky with Pelle & Tim's misfortune early on but I'll take it  ;D. Congrats to all finishers.

Somehow I've done 1m24s in the Lotus here, but I could not get anywhere close to that in practice, so settled on a decent race setup that was predictable. What was not predictable was the frame-skipping that I had out of T1 and round Hugenholtz. The start was OK, somehow I ended up 3rd, and then promptly threw it away two corners later. Sam probably did me a favour putting me a lap down!

I think leaders need to show a bit more patience when lapping, especially at a difficult to pass track like Zandvoort. I got hit 3-4 times by leaders that were trying to pass me as soon as they came up behind me, in places the overtaking can not be done. I can't make my car disappear, wait a few corners. I lost probably up to a minute recovering from being bumped of the track. Once was for position as well.

Got knocked off by Jethro in T1 and re-joined dead last - thought I'd done fairly well to get back up to 3rd and only 30 secs off Sam - but it looks like Roo was actually 2nd as the server had dropped him, so I finished where I started..

That was a hard one! Well done to Sam, Roo and Jonny-o.
Well done also to the finishers and bad luck to all the DNF's

Congrats Sam, Roo, and Jonny! Nice drive by Tim to work his way back through most of the field.

Qualifying was an adventure. I kept surprising myself with how early I needed to brake for Tarzanbocht. I also spent way too much time countersteering. I had myself a little worried. I finally started running some smooth laps. If I was comfortable with the car, I might have gone out for a 3rd stint to see if I could break into the 25s. But I was glad I didn't qualify in front of Bob or Dean. I wasn't up to the task of trying to stay in front of them in the race. That also would have put them in jeopardy when I screwed up, which I likely would have done.

I was in good shape early in the race. A few cars had fallen back and I wasn't far behind Bob and Dean. I should have been a little more patient. I pushed a little too much trying to keep up. I dropped a wheel off the track after Jan de Wyker and ended up coming to stop on the dunes. It was excruciating watching all those cars pass as I waited for the track to clear.

I was fairly consistent if I didn't try to push into the 26s early in the race. Every time I tried to gain a few tenths I started sliding around so much I lost more time. At a few points I got too conservative and let Pelle or Jethro gain too much on me. That complacency never lasted long. They kept me on my toes most of the time. At least 3 of my fastest sector times were set with Pelle or Jethro not far behind me.

Sorry about that spin Doni. I hope I didn't slow you much. Doni opened the door for Pelle before Tunnel Oost. When he didn't appear he was going to close it, I decided I'm going through too. That wasn't a wise decision. I didn't want to cut Doni off so I tried to leave some room on the inside. That was an exciting spin. I'm glad Doni and Jethro didn't appear to have much trouble passing me.

I got lucky Pelle and Jethro weren't very consistent. Bob and Dean may have been lucky that my consistency was lacking at a few points.

Thanks Colin for letting me pass so easily. It was nice to get a chance to see if I could gain some on the cars in front of me.

It's good to see Bob finish.

That was a lot of fun. Other than the two spins and some distractions at home late in the race, I drove a good race.

Thanks guys. I'm looking forward to the next one.

Big Grats SB, JO & TM  :thumbup2:

T1 lap 1: Incredibly unfortunate, Jonny hits curbe goes halfway into the grass & come back. I know you did everything you could to save it, but an accident of warp & I get pushed up on the grass.  :'(
I don't know what else happens, but another car comes up to me on the grass & we keep picnic party ;D

A little rusty on this track (little embarrassing in an Org track & one of my favorites) but whatever little scratches on the car, it began to run really fast...a little too fast in my fight to get back to the top. :o

I was happy with 6th on the grid. Some way from my pb but I haven't run here in 67's for a while & re-acquainting myself with the Lotus was not as simple as I imagined.

Lost a place off the line to Jethro as I backed of a bit to not run into Tim who seemed to bog down. I feel lucky to have avoided the T1 bumps in front of me, lost a place to Bob in the process but really pleased to be still in it :D
I hassled Bob for 10 laps or so trying to size him up, finally making a move stick into Tarzan. Unfortunately Bob spun exiting the corner. This gave me breathing space & I settled in to count off the laps.

Around half distance I suddenly found all the drivers on the list go red & I was suddenly 11th or something having been sure I was 3rd just a moment ago. I guessed I had been dropped by the server but I was still showing as classified which seemed odd. I spent some time trying to keep concentration whilst trying to figure out how it was going to appear to the cars I was about to lap, would they consider I was fighting for position after a spin? Probably. Mostly it went ok, I tried to make clear moves into Tarzan to pass.
I did have an incident with Syd, sorry about that, but it was a warp contact when I thought you left the door open between Tunnel Oost & Panoramabocht.

As I didn't know what position I was really in, I just kept my head down until the flag & was sure I hadn't let anyone pass me for position. So 2nd is a nice surprise (assuming the admins agree & correct the standings?).

Grats to everyone, a strong finishing field :)
Thanks admins for hosting & organizing & may I ask for a result review please :)

I just missed this race after returning from a theatre debut of grandson in Coventry. I like Zandvoort and was hoping to drag the Beast of Bourne around for a few points.
Not likely to challenge the leaders as I still cannot find the sweet spot with this car. Maybe I should have started to use it about 10 years ago!!??  ::)

Grats to Sam, Roo and Johnny-O.

Grats on a fine win, Sam!  Great job by Jonny for P2 and Tim with a brilliant recovery for the final podium placing.

Sorry you were a bit late for the start, Clive.  You were missed.

When I first joined iGOR and accessed the UK server, I got the impression that Honda was having a fire sale.  There were five of about nine so far.  LOL!

Zandvoort is not on my shortlist of fav venues.  I find it way too busy and tiring.  The strat here is just get it home in one piece.  In qualifying, I felt that my G25 steering was not up to snuff even after a re-calibration in-game.  Probably down to me as in-race, it was OK.  I bonused a few positions off the start and thanks to some offs by the gang up ahead and took up position behind Arf.  After about five laps, my vision just simply caved.  This was a great surprise and disappointment as recent treatment with medicated eye drops have proved quite beneficial.  I could hardly see the freakin' road and looking to challenge Arf was not prudent.  Ditto for the early fallers that came roaring back to claim their higher positions earned in qualifying.  I was not up to defending and gave everyone a wave-by.  Sorry to see that Greg had trouble in passing.  Not easy to give way here.  Glad to see that you finally made good on it.

The eyeballs cleared in the late laps as they sometimes do and I managed to hang in for P10(corrected, I think, due to Roo's scoring error)and am satisfied with the result considering.

Doni - re your fire sale - I don't know about others but I took the Honda because it was what the late great John Surtees used in the 67 race, and I wanted to mark his passing.

As for your pursuit of me during the race - I could see you all the way, and I couldn't shake you - I knew I wouldn't be competitive in the Honda and had also gone for a safe steady pace to try and get home (and not retire like Mr Surtees did). I was happy to let anyone quick pass (as all the victims of L1 did). However, all of a sudden I thought you were right up my tailpipes bored of following me - it took a little while to realise that it was Tim (also in a green car...) - sorry for holding you up Tim. I know we were fighting for position, but I knew I'd be wasting both our times fighting it. Also I think it was Jethro who seemed to get surprised by me pulling over approaching Schevlak to let him by, and promptly crashed - I hope that was't to do with me.

One thing about qually - please use Prib and your mirrors. I had a flying lap ruined by someone asleep in the hairpin, after I saw them leave the pits ahead of me...no reason for that.

It's good to see Bob finish.

Cheers Greg, I've been making hard work of this season.  Not a great result but achieved my goal of finishing, which is even more surprising given how things went in practice and qualifying.

I also find Zandy tough, especially getting the line through the chicane in the middle (if I can call it that) and the last corner.  Race started well though, I benefited from the L1 crashes and found myself in 4th with Roo breathing down my neck.  I was tempted to let you go Roo, but left you to find a way in your expensive wheelz and not defend the inside.  Thanks for taking your time and keeping us both safe.  As Roo mentioned I celebrated his pass with a spin and then 3 or 4 more (at least) on the run in to the flag.  A bit disappointed with that.  I was keeping a gap to Tim for quite a few laps but took myself off for a tour of the dunes rather than hold the position.  There was also an incident with Dean, into T1 but we both managed to continue.  I braked too late in the scrap...you did a good job of avoiding, need to view the rpy.

Didn't quite get into the 25s, which was one of my goals, so disappointed in that but actually quite liked the Cooper round here.

Cheers,

Bob.

I was leading the race quite safely, but when I'm close to lap Syd, he spinn and I can't avoid him 'cause his car come back in the middle of track ( Syd , you should be hard on the breaks in a sutch case specialy when you know the leader is so close ! .... at this time I am 4 s faster than you and leading the field, if I stay behind you I will be quickely rejoint....the most fair is to let the leaders pass as quick as possible even in Zandvoort....but here, you overdrive,do a mistake and creat a accident ....^^!....my car is toutch is the accident and I lost 2s per lap after this !...so whith 2s slower the second will pass me easly and quickely....:/
....then , whith a car domadged , I have to push hard to keep my second place till the end....   ....I arrive again behind Syd to lap him for the second time ....but he close all doors and don't respect blue flags and don't giving room to pass.....at the end I think he goes left ...or right ?....I toutch him and my car fly away my race is finish !!!
So, Syd you have been hit 3-4 time by leaders !!? so ask you the right questions..... because you are shurely the only one lapped in this case, maybe because you think it's to the leader to be patient but it is not the case , it's to you to be fair and let the leaders pass especialy when you are dead last and nothing to gain..... and when you create a accident  or worth ended a race ,  apologies be welcome !

First time from what I remember (I didn't watch the replay, they don't work for some reason for me) I just started to lose the back a bit, and I got nugged from behind into a spin.  Towards the end of the race someone caught me I think after the bridge, in a twisty part where you can't just move out of the way. But that someone stuck right to my back and then couldn't wait for the last turn to be over before running over me and putting us both in the fence.
I don't know if it was you both times, but reading your post it seems that way. I'm running my race and it's not my responsibility to park by the track and let you through.  I will let a lapping car by in a safe manner every time. It's not safe to do it in the twisty parts, and I won't apologize for driving my own race. You should also take into account that when you come up to lap someone their speed through the corners will not be the same as yours and drive accordingly. Losing time in traffic is also part of the race.
And if I wasn't taken out so many times by impatient leaders (seems mostly by you), maybe I wouldn't have been last.

....well Syd..... it's clear that you stay on your position.....but you'r still not asking you the right questions : why 99% of the lapped are perfect but you ???....why you are the only one to have been hit 4 times in a race !??
....you said:" I'm running my race and it's not my responsibility to park by the track and let you through."....
_first of all, the question is not to park the car but just to let room for the leaders ( 4s faster than you ! ) and respect the rulls  !! ...don't you see blue flags ?? or don't you have Pribluda ??.....no mirror ???...
_secundo: your sentence show that you don't realy care about the others on track, you just do your race that's all !
......" I will let a lapping car by in a safe manner".....so YOU decide when you will let the leader pass !!!^^!.... :o
......" and I won't apologize for driving my own race."....so no apologies for crossing the track on my way !!??.....you are not alone on track !!....I'm not fighting whith you on the same lap for the last place !!..
......." Losing time in traffic is also part of the race. " ....so you are the " traffic " !!??.....or a mobile chicane !...
......." And if I wasn't taken out so many times by impatient leaders (seems mostly by you), maybe I wouldn't have been last. ".....and if I wasn't been stoped 2 times  by nonchalant lapped  ( seems by you ) , maybe I should finish and win this one .....
