Season 31 Privateers Trophy - Round 05 - Silverstone

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1967 season, the UKGPL season will take place on 10 of the 11 original circuits. For the fifth round of the season we continue the European leg at Silverstone in the UK.

Silverstone is built on the site of a World War II bomber base, RAF Silverstone, which opened in 1943. The track hosted the first F1 championship race in 1950. The British Grand Prix has been permanently held here since 1987. The airfield's three runways, in classic WWII triangle format, lie within the outline of the present track. The first two races were held on the runways themselves, with the 1949 International Trophy switching to the perimeter track. This arrangement was used for the 1950 and 1951 Grands Prix. In 1952 the start line was moved from the Farm Straight to the present Finish Straight, and this layout remained largely unaltered for the following 35 years. Since 1975 the track has been modified with the introduction of chicanes etc – we will be using the 1960’s layout.

Note the Privateers division is run on Intermediate damage settings. Drivers are permitted 1 Shift R followed by a Stop & Go in the pit lane within 2 laps. Failure to make a stop will result in a 30 second time penalty. If you require a stop & go on the final lap & are unable to complete a time penalty of 15 secs is added.

Despite the Honda and the pilot my race was quite good for 15 laps(more or less)than i have seen Nilsson on my left before the last curve and ,the preoccupation of an incident, caused me an exit from the track.Stop & go but after few laps i was overtaken by another car that immediately after have an explosion of the engine. This have distracted me and so the secod exit and retirement.I can't immagine what would I do in a real race ;D

I didn't get off to a great start with the usually reliable Brabham engine blowing up on L1. Because of the noise from the surrounding engines I didn't hear the explosion and trundled on thinking that the G25 was playing up again as a stream of cars passed by.
Some fun racing later with Phil but disaster when I somewhat ambitiously tried to follow JH past Phil and braked too late sending him off the track. So massive apologies to JH
But i got my comeuppance shortly after when, while trying to avoid a stranded Phil, I swerved across the track and ended up on my roof. SnG No2 and end of race.

It was a complete mess. At Lap 1 i shot Ronnie, just changed my brake balance before race  :whistling: sorry here.
Next lap i unsucessfully didn't avoid dave spinning, next lap AL rejoined into me, next lap Pepe (i thought you went off) kicked into my side (i didn't wtch that yet)

Later, my right front tire went to hot and i spun, even my shift r was used...

Sorry Bastian. My engine blew and I managed to stop off the track inside Woodcote. I reset into a gap, but it put me into the middle of the track and I didn't manage to get enough revs in the BRM, so I was crawling off the track as you came along and I was an unavoidable target. After my stop and go I caught a few after some time and found myself up to 5th, but the engine went again.
Grats to Fulvio, great run by Jani.

somehow got 6th!

First half if the race I was getting a random engine problem, almost like fuel starvation, not sure if it was GPL or some sort of issue with the G25 throttle pedal.  Seemed to mostly clear up for the second half, although not totally.

Anyway, the Honda held together and after being gifted several places managed to finish intact.

Did a lot of practice, and improved on my PB during the week. Decided to spend my points on the Lotus. Qualified 4th, about half a second off my PB. Got punted off on L1, lost 4 places. Eventually finished 5th.

. . . next lap [5] Pepe (i thought you went off) kicked into my side (i didn't watch that yet).

I did. It was completely my fault. On the first lap between the first and second corners, Francesco's Honda and my Cooper tangled side by side as he was overtaking me. When I look at the replay (in helicopter view) from the point of view of each driver, it looks as if it is the other guy's fault. Does that make any sense at all?

Four laps later when you were overtaking me, I was trying to stay out of your way but got out of my normal line as I approached T2 and went directly into the grass on the right. I have never figured out what to do once I'm sliding through that skating rink, so I quickly reverted to prayer and hoped that you'd be able to clear T3 before I recovered the track. Instead I T-boned you. The EXACT scenario played out on L12 between two other guys, so my misery at least had some company. I do apologize.

That crash left me upside down, so I took my Shift-R and did the SnG the next time through the pits. I think I was either in last place at that point or close to it. I wanted nothing but to finish the race without further drama. By L15 I think I was the last car still running, about 23 seconds behind Dave Curtis' Eagle. Oddly, I began to gain on him. That didn't make any sense at all because he's a far better driver than I am with a much faster car. Still I finally was able to pull within a few seconds of him, mainly because I think he was lapping with two flat tires, a clogged carburetor, and a potato stuffed in one of his exhaust pipes. If the race had been another 50 or 60 laps, I might have been able to get by him, especially if he'd flattened another tire.

No training, no practice (only one lap to set up my "cockpit"), small changes on an old setup, then off we go! Last spot on the grid, more consistency, less speed, and tremendous luck and I'm already in P2 by the half of the race. Then I switch the sector times ON on Prib to improve my pace, and a few laps later I kill the engine by my usual speedshifting :D Reset, and Stop-n-Go and I'm back to the track just ahead of Dave. After a bit of dicing I can hold my position, and start the last lap with a healthy gap behind. Then in T2 I'm off the track, and there goes my P2... I'm still lucky to re-enter the track ahead of John, half a lap was too short to regain my position, but podium still a great result.
Thanks for the race guys! Congrats Fulvio!

A race of highs and lows for me. Qualified in 5th behind a gaggle of Lotus's (Loti)? and Ferrari's. Flag drops and we all head for Copse. Unfortunately I failed to notice Bastian has sneaked up on the inside and we touched entering the turn forcing me wide onto the grass. By the time I got my act back together I was down in 9th and feeling I had the weight of the world on my shoulders. Then others started throwing there cars at the scenery and mayhem ensued for a few corners and suddenly I was 3rd behind Fulvio and Cookie and we hadn't even finished the 1st lap.

The race settled down me slowly losing touch with the front 2 but equally slowly extending my lead over Dave C behind. Then I'm 2nd and I notice Cookie recovering from exploring the rallying capabilities of the Ferrari. Dave then became Jani in a very fast BRM and a spin at Becketts put him right on my case Huh, BRM?? no problem I'll just up my pace and forget about him. Erm no, Jani was driving like a demon and I just couldn't shake him then as we started to lap a few disaster struck. Passed Michael on the run down to Woodcote and passed Phil on the run down to Copse then as Michael already mentioned in his report bang and I'm on my roof. Shift-r (Track not Clear) - rinse and repeat. :( Finally got right side up pitted for my S&G a lap later and rejoined amazingly only down in 5th but a long way behind Rainier in 4th My 5th became 4th when Gareth disappeared. But with a full tank after my S&G it was always going to be hard to make any impression on the leading group. Then after a mistake from Jani allowed Rainer to close up they seemed to slow each other down and as the laps reeled off the gap came down until I was within a second by the final lap and had I pushed a bit harder I might have even sneaked 3rd when Jani went wide at Beckets on the last lap but I just wasn't close enough to make the attack so followed Rainier and Jani home. Fulvio meanwhile had finished, parked up and gone to the pub such was his lead at the end.

Congrats to the podium.

TTFN
John.
