Title: UKGPL Season 31 (2017) Graduates Cup Privateers (67) - Mosport - May 14
Post by: Samb on May 10, 2017, 02:33:36 PM +0100
Season 31 Privateers Trophy - Round 07 - Mosport

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1967 season, the UKGPL season will take place on 10 of the 11 original circuits. For the seventh round of the season we cross the Atlantic Ocean for the Canadian GP at Mosport. Consisting of mainly fast turns, other than the devilish Moss corner, undulations and a long back-straight, a good all-round setup is required here.

The track held its first major race in 1961, when Stirling Moss, who won, suggested changes to the proposed hairpin, which then became the two corners called Moss in his honour. The first ever Canadian Grand Prix was held at Mosport in 1967 and was won by Jack Brabham.  The circuit was used again in 1969 in a race won by Jackie Ickx.  Jackie Stewart crashed out after tangling with a back marker, the privateer Al Pease, who was being lapped for the fourth time at only half distance.  At the end of the race, Al Pease was disqualified and to this day remains the only driver to be disqualified for being too slow. More like something you would find in a GPL race than a real F1 event!

Note the Privateers division is run on Intermediate damage settings. Drivers are permitted 1 Shift R followed by a Stop & Go in the pit lane within 2 laps. Failure to make a stop will result in a 30 second time penalty. If you require a stop & go on the final lap & are unable to complete a time penalty of 15 secs is added.

This Season we don't have a Red Zone. Moderating will be on reported incidents only. If you haven't received a PM about an incident before the link below the results table is removed, you can be sure that you will not appear in the moderator's report.

The chassis token system is explained on the Privateers standings page. Please ensure you choose a chassis that is within your budget, which can be seen by hovering the mouse over your points total in the standings.

Hi Axel
Thankfully my server behaved itself tonight.  I had to set up the laps etc and loose grids which took me a while so we were late starting.  For some reason the loose grid didn't work but everyone managed a clean start.

My race was a catalogue of errors as usual.  Still too many missed gears  :taz:

The replay server, UKGPL3 seems to be off-line at the moment.

Until UKGPL3 is back, the server replay can be downloaded from here (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4Y5yeIvfzZvbE5xeUoyZkJnVm8/view?usp=sharing)

Very scruffy race for me. Got a reasonable start from P3 but a side by side with Fran bumped me into the long grass. The replay looks like a 50/50 although I think an overtake at that corner was always likely to result in contact. After that I spent most of the race trying to pass Michael. We had a moment when a Cooper span at Moss. I thought I had a free run on the inside but Mike swooped round the outside. Contact was probably my fault. I had several spins & swapped places with Phil several times. Well done to John. That's two wins, but I think any one of the top 5 could win the series.

It was my first try with G27 last night.

My tires went really hot and the brake pedal is so much harder than other wheels - i had much trouble, and i didn't even use the H-Shifter. Just the new wheel.

Sorry to Dave C, i was running into you once and another time to Mark Jones, i lost it under breaking and went inside as much as i could but unfortunately didn't avoid you

Feel free to do a report Billy,i have tried an overtake that at start seem to me done but this one is a classic for the moderator.
I'm sorry for what happen and since the continuation of my race was stopped by 2 engine explosion, this overtake has been useless.

After the solo racing at Nuremberg, Mosport was a welcome change with action all the way -though mainly defending against would be overtakers rather than challenging for position. Great fun nonetheless.
Billy's Ferrari in particular constantly disappearing then reappearing to buzz in my speakers like an angry wasp.

Unusually the race proceeded without any self inflicted disasters and with my first top six finish of the season rather than the Al Pease memorial trophy

I made a poor start due to the very closed grid ...3 cars on a line !
Then I followed John "Jeep" during 15 laps (?) until we rejoin the backmarkers.
Phil spun at Moss and I couldn't avoid him :(

Immediately after, I dont'understand what happened : Phil was crossing the track in reverse and there was a new contact  ...

I don't know if my car was damaged or if I was too nervous but I spun 2 times during the 2 or 3 next laps and it seems I was running 1 second per lap more than before these incidents.

I think any one of the top 5 could win the series.

If we remove the worst results, the situation is :

1 Jeep 229
2 Fulvio 226
3 Bastian 224
4 Rainier 210
5 Andy 196

If we remove the 2 worst results :

Jeep, Fulvio and Bastian have exactly the same total : 201 pts !!!

I can't remember a Privateers season with so many closed drivers for the title !
Very exciting !

Well, Totally unexpected to win here. Was very surprised to manage 2nd on the grid managing to take almost a second off my previous PB in the Cooper during qualifying.

Very tight grid, I was waiting for Rainier to appear in front of me and got the shock of my life when I glanced right then left and saw spots 1 & 3 alongside. Flag dropped and we all fought for grip and minimum wheelspin to keep every thing in a straight line. Managed to get the jump on Rainier into T1 but he was never out of my mirrors for the opening laps. I seemed to have the edge through T1 and the long left hander but he hauled me back in and was up my chuff by Moss every lap. I didn't expect to hold him off for as long as I did but fortunately (For me) he ran wide into T2 and onto the grass around Lap 7 and that gave me a few seconds breathing space. Around lap 17 we came across Billy and Michael having their own battle and on the approach to Moss Billy slide wide and clipped the Armco. I scraped through but Rainier wasn't so lucky and they collided giving me a lead of around 10 seconds or so.

From there it was a case of managing the gap as well as I could and trying to catch people in the best place for me to not have to wreck my rythym. Came across Bastian with about 6 laps to go and had planned to just follow him home but noticed the previous distance back to Rainier of 0.7mile at Moss had become 600yds so pressed on and put Bastian between us.

Honestly do not think I would have won in a straight fight over full race distance as Rainier and few others had more outright speed than me.

Congrats to the rest of the podium and all finishers.

Thanks guys. Really enjoying my time at UKGPL.

Stick with the G27 Bastian, I hated mine and almost went back to my trusty Momo at 1 point. The brake pedal in particular does take some getting used to but once it clicks you will wonder how you managed with anything else. Mine has taken me from paddles no clutch and LF braking through to RF braking full clutch and shifter. I'm still not as quick as previously but couldn't go back now.

TTFN
John.
