Title: UKGPL Season 31 (2017) Specials Series Trophy - Mosport R - May 16
Post by: EvilClive on May 12, 2017, 02:38:14 PM +0100
Next for this reversed series is another well known Papyrus original.

Mosport in reverse creates some interesting corners and blind crests. Moss is now at the fast end of the straight and will require respect unless you wish to see a lot of Canadian countryside. The long T2 which is a fast downhill left hander in the original is now a fast uphill right hander that ends over a blind crest with negative camber...............take care.

For this race we are using the 69x cars, which are fast and grippy, at least the cars with wings are!!

Wow! another awesome reversed track! This one needs to be in our normal calendar 8)

Sam gave me some fantastic competition for both Qualifying and Race with some very fast times here - also in a 312.
It was lucky for me he started putting them in when he did, as I was just about to go back to my race setup for the final 10 minutes of practice, and would have ended up nearly a second behind him on the score cards :o
Dropping the rest of the time I needed to pip him involved some seriously careful thought and driving to keep the speed and slip angle up while maintaining precision - something I only really achieved in the last 4 minutes or so when on the last couple of gallons of fuel.

In the race I managed to hold first and even open a small gap while on cold tyres, so thought I might get away with this one relatively easily - then I put a wheel on the beach entering the back straight and got sucked off in the sand.
When I rejoined Sam had enough of a run to pass me before Moss, so I settled in to watching him for a lap or 2 and then started thinking about passing him.
Barring a mistake there's only really one place to pass here in the 69's - and that's the back straight and into Moss, a hairy proposition even when not battling for position.

We exchanged places a few times here and I sampled the sandpit a few more times while trying to ensure I gave Sam room before I finally made it stick.
Then I span off bigtime while trying to defend from him on a particularly close run into Moss about 12 laps into the race.
I caught up the first time within a few laps and then put a wheel onto the grass somewhere in the T1-3 complex and let him get away again.

I let the red mist descend a bit at this stage and went hell-for-leather to catch him. Watching the time gap on my pit board showed I would catch him about 7 laps from the end so I continued to press on.
Sadly Sam managed to also put 2 wheels in the sand on the outside of T3 just as I got to within a second from him - time-wise it's the worst point on the track to spin so I was long gone when he eventually rejoined.

Well done to Sam on an excellent display of pace and a great fight, also to Tris for 3rd, and to all the finishers - I hope you enjoyed Moss as much as I did  8)

Now to wait for the replay as mine didn't save for some weird reason....

Congrats on the win Tim! Yes I really enjoyed that battle with you as well. You did were the faster of the two of us (as usual   ;D), but was happy to be able to keep you honest.

After that spin I lost the plot. A lap later I lost the back end at Clayton corner and ripped a wheel off on the armco. Had to shift r and stop and go after that. For desserts I think I had one more spin, and then drove dishearteningly to the flag.

I have to say Mosport in reverse is savage. Really enjoyed hustling the Ferrari around here. See you all at the next one.

Really Special this Track in reverse!  :)
Started from 5th Place I thought: "More than 4th in the end will be a surprise." So I got this "Best of the rest" in the finish.  :thumbup1:
Great laptimes upfront!

Glad you guys enjoyed the reversed Mosport track, and I have to say that so far it has to be one of my favourites.

The altitude changes and the varying radius corners just seem to work really well. AVG dictated that I joined the server with only about 8 minutes of praccy left. Then I discovered that I did not have the 60fps patch applied so wasted another couple of mins sorting that!!
No time to dither about which car to use, so just grabbed the Lotus 63 and stuffed an old Mosport setup into it. It took me a while to get used to the handling and only really dialled in once the race started, only to discover that 4th gear was so close to 3rd as to be useless and 5th was too low when slipstreaming  :-\

A succession off excursions throughout the race hampered any chances of getting a good result, but it was huge fun. Especially throwing the car into Moss and catching the slide before hurtling down into the dip and up over that blind rise............

Not for me to decide about these things but I do believe that this version of Mosport could be used for more events.  ::)
