Moderator's Report

Nothing in the Red Zone and although Jason and Hendy tripped over one another into Tarzan second time round, after a bit of a dart by the flying BT11, it wasn't reported and if the drivers are happy to leave it, so am I. Here's Tarzan, I'm Jase maybe ;)

UKGPL Season 22 65 Novices Trophy
Race 9 Zandvoort

Welcome to the final round of the Novices Trophy for Season 22 - we are off to Holland to play in the sand dunes. Norm has what looks like a solid lead but because of his need to drop a score, it is a straight fight between him and Hendy for the Novice crown. Good luck to them both. Rog is comfortable in third but can't reach the top step.

Circuit Park Zandvoort is located in Burgemeester van Alphenstraat, near the town of Zandvoort in the Netherlands. The first street race was held on June 3, 1939. A real circuit was not built until after the war, based on communications roads built by the German army during its occupation in WW2. It was inaugurated on August 7, 1948. Next year the circuit hosted the Zandvoort Grand Prix. The following year, the race was called the Dutch Grand Prix, and it was included in the Formula One World Championship from 1952. It remained on the F1 calendar for 30 out of the next 34 years. In 1985, the Dutch Grand Prix was held for the last time. The company that commercially ran the circuit went out of business, marking the end of Circuit Zandvoort. A plan to save the remaining track was eventually made and Circuit Park Zandvoort was born, a 1.6 mile Club Circuit, in 1989.

The circuit is a twisty bumpy monster and it can be difficult to pass. So beware.

The first lap will be fully moderated within the red zone. The red zone will cover the whole of the first lap.

Please check the Season 22 pages for details regarding rules and the Novices Trophy pages in particular.

It is very important that drivers are FULLY familiar with the rules relating to Shift-R. EVERY Shift-R MUST be followed by a Stop-and-Go or the driver will be excluded.

Please see the Novices registration thread for an explanation of the chassis allocations shown below:
https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=9196.0

Please ensure that you take a valid chassis for your group. THIS IS IMPORTANT AS THE CHASSIS GROUPINGS AND YOUR SEEDING HAS CHANGED. Please check the Novice Chassis thread. I will be checking.

There are some new faces potentially amongst us who have been assigned to Group I. Other drivers have also had seedings changed as part of an ongoing review. If you feel you have been wrongly seeded, please let me know.

I too am struggling here and for what its worth Paul I think that there is only 1 racing line at Zandvoort- you've got to get in the groove man Wink Finding the rhythm at this flowing track I think is more important than aceing a setup.... that said I am finding it hard to breach 1.30

I was comfy 1:31 in training but in the race the handling was EVIL. Massive understeer and melted left front Sad

some 1.5 secs down in the first sector alone...

ah well.

Well done to Hendy and commiserations to Norm - thought you might do it there for a mo. Great qually.

Enjoyed the season and looking forward to S23. Thoughts on the handicapping would be helpful.

Well, that turned out to be a fun, but seeming hard-fought run through the dunes!

Had a couple of runs round here yesterday in 65's & was fairly happy with a high 1:32.    I found a good setup tip - take the excess fuel out;  32laps-worth was plenty!

My Honda time was over 1 second slower, so that chassis lost out again  (although I was already aware of the extra gear - that came to light last time on about my 3rd lap of Mosport!).

Then I read the posts that seemed to mention 1:30 should be the target - hmmm, waaay off in that case!

Had an ok qually session, which still put me pretty much at the back.  There were a number of incidents so I inherited 4th before dropping it again in a couple of times.  At times we seemed to have a train going there;  although distance back to my carriage was growing a little each time round.   Ending up at 4th (subject to mod of course!)  was a welcome surprise.

I really am starting to like these here '65s.  Although I really did not seem to see much running off/expected novice behaviour out there...!  Maybe half the field will be invited to move up somewhere next season?! Wink

Anyway,  thanks all for an enjoyable run these last couple of events.

Congrats to the podium & the champion!

Cheers,
Dave.

Congrats to Jason on the race win, massive congrats to Hendy on the championship win, and also congrats to Norm on a well fought season, and of course to the rest of us Smiley

My lack of practice for this race show up quite quickly as I was no where near the front. I really struggled to get a clean lap in qualifying, not really traffic, more like problems of my own making. I finally got a half decent time, so I went to my race setup to get myself ready. I was surprised to find that I was much quicker with race fuel onboard, and managed to beat my pervious qualifying time by half a second.

As the race started, I knew that if I pushed my tyres quickly over heated, so I generally brought everything up to temperature, while being quite careful around the first few laps. I was just about in touch with the leaders, and somehow inherited 3rd place. R Venn was all over the back of me, and a little quicker than me at this point in the race, he touched the back of me just after the hairpin, which meant I needed to reset. After I did my stop and go I was pretty much last. Badblood was a little in front, and we had a little battle for a lap or two, until I managed to make a pass stick, but after that I was all over the place.

I was chasing down R Venn, and catching him very slowly. I started to push as I was making slow progress, and no one else was around me, but then a series of mistakes cost me quite a bit of time. At this point I felt I was a bout to be lapped, and decided it was safer for everyone if I just quit, as I really didn’t want to make any silly mistakes that cost anyone else there race.

Thank you for the season, it was a lot of fun, and I’ve very happy that I finally managed to win a race. I’m looking forward to next season already.

Congrats again to all who took part.

What an exciting race! I was pleased with my qually time and 5th on the grid was a good as could be hoped for in the Vespa Engined Bathtub that is the BT7. In pre-race chat there was some suggestion that the BT7 would be the car to have through the twists and turns of Zandvoort but actually you couldnt be further than the truth - of the 16 corners at Zandvoort, 8 are taken flat out and most of the others are not really much of a challenge.  Where the BT7 excells is traction in the 3 really slow bends at the start of the lap.
The start was awesome! 5th became 3rd on the run into T1 and I immediately started to think about making that into 2nd, or even first! The 3 abreast move into Tarzan on lap 2 was not a success however and my trip across the grass relegated me waaaaaaay down the order.  A couple of passes later and one almighty shunt for 3 cars ahead and I'm back in 2nd place and hunting down Normski's Honda, and what followed made me whoop for Joy - I passed Norm around the OUTSIDE of Tarzan!!!! I Immediately pulled out about a 4 second lead then settled in for the cruise to the flag, although Hendys late race push in second place kept me awake!
As always, the few backmarkers I had to lap were very professional and curteous.
One thing to note - my 3rd victory of the season was won in very much the same fashion as the other two - IE, adequate in qualifying, blindingly fast on cold tyres and full tanks then cruise to the finish! My fastest race lap was only 6th best last night!
Congrats to Hendy for becoming Our Champion... Up to inters next season for you my lad Cheesy

I passed Norm around the OUTSIDE of Tarzan!!!!

Nice work Jason, I recall Mario Andretti trying that on James Hunt and getting run off the road. Hunt's explanation was "We don't pass on the outside in Grand Prix racing". Cheesy

I was surprised to find that I was much quicker with race fuel onboard, and managed to beat my pervious qualifying time by half a second.

I noticed this too, it seemed like there was more stability and traction.

Some contact early in the race on T1 put me in 12th, every time I was about to get back on the track another car 'appeared' on the straight very close to the camera and I had to wait.

This track is easy to drive at a medium pace, but trying to push is very treacherous on the outsides of those high speed corners. A couple times during the race I came inches from what would have been a very bad wreck and the end of the race for me.

It was great racing with you all this season. Maybe I will be seeing some of you in the Ints? Wink
