Season 30 Historics Trophy – Round 7 – Monza

The Autodromo Nazionale Monza is a race track located near the city of Monza, north of Milan, in Italy.  Built in the Royal Villa of Monza park in a woodland setting, the circuit has gone through numerous changes over the years.  Perhaps the most striking feature in the park is the steep banked (sopraelevata) curves on the now defunct 10Km variant, first used in 1955.  The original circuit (used between 1922 and 1933) also had an oval section but the banked curves were not as wide or as steep as the later 1955 variant.  The banked circuit was used on four occasions for Formula 1 races; in 1955, 1956, 1960 and finally in 1961 when it was decided that Formula 1 cars were just too fast to be safe on the oval track.   The banked oval section was last used in any capacity in 1969.  From 1962 onwards, the Formula 1 Grand Prix was held on the "road circuit" which by the early 1970s was also deemed to be too fast for Formula 1 cars.  Two chicanes were introduced for 1972 Italian Grand Prix, one at the Ascari curve and another on the approach to the Curva Grande.  It is the 1960s road circuit without the chicanes that we will be using for tonight's race.

This will be a 3 Litre event.

Doh, took RA273 but was little rusty after long time, few spins in the race and then while passing Phil and with 3 leaders few secs behind before Grande I got a black screen for few secs, something to do with OGL I used, doh, tried to move out of way, lifted and went to the right onto the grass while not seeing a thing, then picture returned but I was more of a passenger on the grass to the right of Grande, and speed pushed me back on track at 80 mph, behind few cars were coming in and Big Sorry if I caused a mess behind cause there seems to have been one. Didn't expect RA273 to be so slow, though i had no draft mostly. Had 2 spins at parabolica with heavy in for the first 2 laps and that spoiled my race wich I ended by loosing a front wheel at Lesmo 1.

Sorry if I was a bit of a mobile chicane tonight.  I've moved my H Shifter to my left hand and it is taking some getting used to.  Missed dozens of gears tonight I'm amazed the engine stayed together.

Grats to Dean on a great win.  Pity about the shunt whilst leading Axel  Sad

Congrats Dean, Syd, and Doni!

I got lucky in qualifying to have Axel come out of the pits not far in front of me. Just the right gap to get an easy 31. I struggled a bit to put in a good lap in front of him. I did it though, allowing him to take pole position. Axel might do a 30 if he caught me at the correct time. Smiley

I didn't fare so well in the race. I followed Axel wide into Lesmos on lap 1. Having to lift more than I wanted, slid me into the wall hard. That was the beginning of working my way to the back of the field. I soon spun at Parabolica. A few more steps backwards. Hit the wall at Lesmos again leading Andrew and then spun exiting Lesmo 2. Sorry for slowing you so much Andy. And unfortunately I clipped Doni. I didn't know it at the time. I had to sit there a while as many cars passed. That got me down to 14th or 15th. Free of traffic, my lap times improved.

Slowly, I picked off a few backmarkers. I got behind the pack that finished behind Dean with a 10+ second gap and many laps to go. I slowly closed the gap. I was getting close to getting a good tow when I caught Phil at a poor time. I spun at Parabolica after passing him. Sorry for the screw up.

Within a few laps I knew my car was damaged. Looking at the mechanical report it was worse than I thought. That explains why I had so much difficulty entering Curva Grande, Lesmo 1, and Parabolica. I was either braking early or sliding too much. I could never put the throttle down good coming out of Curva Grande or Lesmo 2. It's probably best that I didn't catch the pack in front of me. I no longer had the car to do what I needed to do.

Commiserations to Tris, Axel, and Piero. That's some terrible luck. Monza's a real heartbreaker.

Thanks guys.

YEAH
I was entering CG close behind Tris and could not see what happened in front when Tris lifted...
This was lethal in a full throttle corner and I rearended him, shame it took out the top 3.
We had a great close fun battle until then. SORRY Tris and Piero!

Sorry for Greg too as my over cautious braking into L1 Lesmo 1 got him into troubles,
together we maybe could have pulled away...

I was a bit unhappy after getting hit by clive in parabolica lap 3.
The beginning of my end, could have been a good result for me.

Apologies to Bastian. I was not sure who it was who I made contact with at the time, and I am sorry that he suffered so badly. As usual with GPL collision box, it is the car on the outside that suffers most. My Brabham was slower on the straights, but quicker than just about every other car on braking and through the corners. I will put in a report on the incident and let the mods decide.

My choice of the Brabham was just for the heck of it, I geared the car to take advantage of slipstream and managed to get a tow up to 4th on the grid. That was perfect for following the fast Fezzas ahead, as long as I got a good start.
I thought I did make a good start, it was nowhere near as fast as Tris who rocketed through the pack to join the front 3 in his BRM. I hooked up behind the leading pack and was towed along quite nicely thankyou. The 50 mtrs I lost on the straights even with the tow, was easily gained through CG and Lesmos and then through Parabolica under braking and higher corner speeds.

Then I think I was right on Piero's tail through Parabolica and he had a sudden BIG wobble and I had to take drastic avoiding action and lost a lot of ground. I was stranded 200 mtrs behind the leading pack after that with no slipstream and a car that was slow on the straights!!??
I was certain that 4th would now be the best that I could hope for......then I came across a scattering of cars at CG and suddenly I was handed the lead!!! but there was still a long way to go.
It was painful to watch prib as lap after lap Dean, Syd ( welcome back Syd!), Andrew and Doni got closer and closer and there was nothing that I could do!!! on each straight those red things reeled me in. Once they had passed me, I was able to tuck in and use the slipstream to stay with them and hope for a chance to pass.
Doni had dragged his Honda up behind me and was a threat to my last possible podium place, so I stuck close to Syd and allowed him to drag the pair of us closer to Dean who was now in the lead. Gradually a small gap grew back to Doni and I was feeling more secure about 3rd with about 4 laps to go.

Then my superior cornering speed was my downfall again. Again I closed up under braking as we approached Parabolica and was hoping to tuck in behind him for the S/F straight. Then Syd missed a gear Huh mid corner and I had to stand on the brakes and lose momentum just when I should have been giving the Brab full beans. Doni took his chance and swept past to steal my 3rd spot!! and try as I might I could not work a passing chance before the flag.  Sad

Grats to Dean Syd and Doni for the podium, commiserations to Axel Tris and Piero for the CG incident...........note to myself " next time don't try and be clever, choose a car that is fast enough for the track!!"

First congrats to Dean on the win and Donnie for getting the Honda on the podium.
Man, what a race from my perspective. Smiley
I had an average start, don't think I lost or gained any places. Than, we were all in a bunch braking for parabolica on lap 1, and even though I braked early, it was still too late, and I was about to hit someone ahead, but I just managed to go left, miss, but end up in the sand. So I set off in pursuit, a few cars just ahead of me, I was hanging around 10th. Just as I catch a group of 3-4 cars, first time I'm close to them for the braking in parabolica, I repeat the same mistake from lap 1. I braked too late for the cars in front, have to take evasive action, go into the sand, loose 5-6 seconds again. But I knew this is a long race, and it's still early. Almost the whole way I was always driving with at least 3-4 cars around me. I gotta say, Monza in 66 cars is the closest to what I think driving on a an oval is. Constant drafting, and close racing if you can stay in the slipstream.
In the second half of the race, with I think 2 ferraris ahead and honda behind, I suddenly noticed we were now fighting over second place. That was probably soon after the incident that wiped out the top three. And we were closing in on the leader! I think it was still the 4 of us when we caught Clive, but I think one of the ferraris made a mistake, so it was essentially the final four of us racing close. At one point, I was very close to Dean exiting Parabolica when he had a moment, and I had to pump the brakes to avoid hitting him, but that also lost me the momentum, and I fell from 2nd to 4th. By the time I managed return to second, Dean had a 3.5 second lead. I was going a little faster , clawing some 0.3-0.4 a lap back, when I accidentally  shifted a gear up in Parabolica (well spotted Clive). That made Clive take evasive action, and Donnie got past him. Sorry Clive. That also gave Dean 1 second back, and there was jut not enough time left to catch him, so I just concentrated on not making any more mistakes. Second podium since I got back Smiley Looking forward to Watkins Glen.

You do not have to apologize Axel !!! It was not your fault! Wink

I was having fun, and I was beginning to hope, at least for the podium.
I avoided the duel knowing it would be the final round to decide the outcome.
After many results in zero points due to accidents I was aiming to get to finish the race, but unfortunately not this time!

It was definitely better if I was at a distance and maybe I would be alone ..

However, congratulations to the podium and thanks to all

Great race for me.
In clean air by best times were low 1,35 in the BT19. I believe that Andreas had a minor problem with his car which slowed him down to about my level. We had a great battle for maybe half the race. His Ferrari had great acceleration out of Lesmo 2 & Parabolica. I could use the draft to sit on his gear box, but never enough to get past. Andreas made a couple of minor mistakes allowing me to sneak in front but within a couple of laps he would power past again. Given my speed 8th was a good finishing spot, although mostly down to other drivers suffering misfortunes. Congratulations to the podium finishers.

Just a small reminder that regular Privateer / Amateurs drivers are permitted to take the 3.0L cars in races where the Pro drivers are restricted to 2.0L cars.

Ripper of a round with all manner of nonsense that a Holywood script writer wouldn't dare hand in to his boss.  Smiley

Grats to Dean on an amazing comeback drive!  No need to thank me for backing out of the gas early and letting you have the Curva Grande on Lap11 otherwise we both would have been dead, right?  If I've learned anything in S30 across a number of races it's that racing you is just not workable.  Much better to chose the survivor option.

A great recovery, too, from Syd who claimed P2 in yet another dash from Nowhere'sville.

I feel for Clive in that he was helpless to prevent the mob from closing in from so far back.  On a circuit like this without a tow buddy, it's like taking a knife to a gun fight.  And, of course, I got lucky in that you had to check up to avoid Syd with just two laps to run which gave me my golden opportunity to make the pass.  It was my day.

Very sorry to see so many involved in early shunts some of which were terminal.  I just knew that things would go sour as I binned my P12 qualifying slot and DQ'd myself to start dead last in P18.  I just chugged off the grid and waited for the melee to begin.  Imagine my surprise that Lap01 went off without the anticipated major shunt in the Curva Grande or Lesmo1.  Go figure.  Even so, things worked out quite well in the end.  Smiley

hi Wink
After a bad qualifs, I take a very good start and see that I am able to stay whith the leaders....so I get a very exiting race till the accident...when I come in the CG, Isaw a car in the grass inside, I stay flat out 'cause I was not thinking the car will come back on track....so when I see the car coming back on track I brake a little to see how to avoide it, but no time to do more action 'cause Axel don't see what's append.....I drive F10 for that in particular....mutch better vue of the environement...I can see the car who are in front of the car who are in front of me ....Wink.....that's help me several times to avoid crash.
