Was even more off the pace than usual    must be missing something there. Tried default setup, then more front grip
less wing/more wing. Kept falling off in the race, and was then too far behind with no chance to catch so quit in disgust 

Judging by the fact you out qualified everyone by a second or more and I don't think anyone's dialled it in better than you have. If they have I hate to think how much quicker you can go compared to the rest of us. Spanner kindly gave me a setup that was a tad more stable than the default but even so I still fell off one out of every 3 or 4 laps, even when not pushing hard. These things certainly show up my lack of talent  :'(
