Moderator's Report

Summary

A fast and consistent drive gave Paul Skingley an easy win. Steve Foster joined him on the podium claiming 2nd place after a 13 lap close battle with Derek Howe in 3rd.

Lap 1 Turn 3 Chris Bull, Bernie Darwin and Dean Holloway.

Chris slightly nudges Bernie from behind, they spin collecting Dean in the process.
Chris comes worse off and has to Shift-R. Reduced from a 2 place penalty as Bernie was slow out of the corner and everyone was really tightly packed, but ultimately, Chris is behind and therefore should be carefull not to rear-end. 0 place penalty plus extra 1 place penalty for a first lap incident.

  • Bullypenalty — Rear end shunt — 1 place lost (plus 3 for penalty points)

Lap 5 T4 Chris Bull and Dean Holloway.

Chris closes in on Dean from behind at the exit. They collide. This 2nd nudge was similar as Dean is on another line and has a slower exit speed, so reduced to a 1 place penalty.

  • Bullypenalty — Rear end shunt — 1 place lost (plus 3 for penalty points)

Lap 9 Dave Lawrence and Dean Holloway.

Dean rounds the corner to find Dave joining the track after an off. Dean takes to the grass into the fence.
This isn't Daves fault as there was no car in his mirrors and was off the racing line. Dean had the option of driving to Dave's inside, but he didn't know which way to go.

Racing incident.

Lap10 Ronnie Nilsson and Mike ratters

Ronnie spins out of control; Mike has no where to go.

Racing incident.

Lap 13 Leech Bailey and Dean Holloway

Leech rear-ends Dean in the pits. Dean has to Shift-R. Leech quits.

Lap 14 and 18 Robert Burton

Robert's first stop was 3 seconds short, his second 6 seconds. Times each by 3.

  • Burtoner — Short stops — 27.000 seconds added

Lap 15 and 21 Robert Burton

Robert shift-Rs and doesn't pit.

  • Burtoner — Missing 2 Stop and Go's — 30.000 seconds added

Lap 19 Chris Bull and Dave Lawrence

Chris rejoins the track making an effort to rejoin carefully but by staying on the track edge and pressing on the throttle too much, he spins it, roll backwards and collects Dave. I can see Chris was trying to be careful as with his many other rejoins, so just a warning this time. Remember to jump on the brakes when you start rolling across the track.

  • Bullywarning — Bad rejoin — also, 3 places lost for penalty points

If I may, a couple of tips:
1)Make sure you enter the track in 1st gear to make a quick return to racing speed. 3rd isn't going to do it. Also, be gentle on the throttle as you rejoin - you need to be in control if other cars are passing close by.

2)Lifting the throttle from full to nothing in a straight line, then turning, is asking for a spin - and it quite often happened. Turn as you're lifting so as you're not throwing the weight of the car forward as it rotates.

Summary

Congrats to Paul for his second straight win. Unforturnatly there isn't a server replay, so I can only comment on the 2 client replays I was sent of the start.

Start - Bernie Darwin

Bernie didn't engage 1st gear or the throttle. Collisions ensued.
Decision based on the fact that Bernie couldn't see the flag man and his mirrors were not working. Also, these sort of things happen in real racing too. I know that sometimes we can only see four cars ahead, but we should be always on the look out for stationary cars the further back we qualify.

Racing incident.

Moderator's Report

Summary

I joy to watch. Lots of close racing and finishes!
Driver of the race goes to Derek Howe. Consistent and fast driving with no errors. Well done.

Start - Paul Skingley and Phil Thornton.

Paul, on the inside, veers off to the right with wheel spin. Phil, in the centre, starts in a straight line. By the time they pass the pits, Paul has made in onto the track and trys to stay on the verge, but Paul slightly veered to the left. They touch wheels and both slide off the track.
This kind of contact is mostly down to the blind spot, starting from three a breast and the narrowing of the track. So, a racing incendent.
Then, Phil joins safely. Paul enters the track too quickly due to slight wheel spin. He collects Derek Howe and Dean Holloway has to take avoiding action.

  • Tifosi312penalty — Bad Rejoin — 4 places lost

L2 Bernie Darwin and Mike Ratters

Nice little argy bargy.

L2 Robert Burton

Rob's engine dies. He doesn't get off the racing line, thus collects Paul Brock.
Please drive off the racing line when your engine goes. And if you have someone right behind you, then please take a quick exit onto the grass if it's safe to do so.

  • Burtoner — Failing to take Stop & Go after Shift-R — 15.000 seconds added

L3 Noel Kellett, Bernie Darwin and Mike Ratters.

Noel takes a late apex at the hairpin, Bernie takes an early apex. Bernie's line and moving 5mph faster takes him too close to Noel. Bernie backs off suddenly which catches Mike out who rear ends him.Ther was no one at fault here. The usual conseteener in tight groups.
I'd like to see a more carfull aproach when you see people on different lines. Antisipate where they're going to be so you can leave room. Mike could have slowed sooner, but easy for me to say and difficult to predict in racing conditions.

Racing Incident

Bernie Shift's-R here, but as far as I can see, he just needed to reverse onto the track.

  • bernie — Failing to take Stop & Go after Shift-R — 15.000 seconds added

L6 Ronnie Nilsson and Noel Kellett.

Noel runs off the track, hits the hay bails, drives back onto the track, runs marginaly into the centre when Ronnie Nilsson comes round the corner, hits the curb, so also ends up in the centre line: they touch. Noel blows his engine and Ronnie manages to continue in 3rd place.

Now, you could say that Noel made a bad rejoin by entering the track near the middle. You could also say that as Ronnie was behind, it was his job to carefully pass. He made the mistake of hitting the curb and heading towards the centre of the road. So, they both headed for each other, so both at fault.

Racing incendent.

L7 Robert Burton and Bernie Darwin.

Robert goes off at T2. Rejoins at T3 rather quickly. Bernie was fast aproaching and had nowhere to go. Bernie collides with Robert.

  • Burtoner — Bad rejoin — 3 places lost

L8 Robert Burton

  • Burtoner — Short Stop by 5 seconds — 15.000 seconds added

L12 Steven Foster and Derek Howe.

Steven overtakes Derek on the inside of the final turn. As Steven turns in, he clips the curb which sends him wide into the hay bails. He bounces off into the side of Derek. They both spin off, but are able to continue. This spoilt this Mods entertainment :) What great driving until then.
Well, at first I thought this would be a Side by Side Contact: 2 Places. A Mitigating factor was that Steve was out of control. So I will let the results stand.

However, I have to give a warning as he lost control while attempting an ambitious overtake thus taking away what would have been a large enough lead for Derek to win the race. It was just unfortunate that Steven clipped the curb.

Moderator's Report

Congrats to Karl Doyle for a flag to flag victory.

L1 Leroy Bailey and Noel Kellett

T2 Leroy, on the outside with no overlap, takes the corner faster, but cuts the corner into the side of Noel.
Please think ahead and guess that if you're on the outside, the driver on the inside is going to be going slower due to the tighter line.

There were no Mitigating factors of a side on contact. If you're going two wide into a corner: give more room.

L1 T3 Steven Foster and Ronnie Nilsson

Steven, on the inside, out brakes Ronnie. He keeps to the inside while Ronnie drives to the inside and makes side contact. Ronnie takes to the grass and Steve is able to carry on.
If in doubt about the location of the driver behind, keep to your side of the road until you see them in your mirrors.

  • Ronnie Nilssonwarning — Penalty reduced to warning because Ronnie attempted to give room. — also, 1 place lost for penalty points

L2 T5 Dean Holloway, Mike Ratcliffe and Derek Howe.

Dean is right behind Derek and to the left of Mike at the braking point to T5. Dean rear ends Derek after braking just before him.
The trick here is to brake when the driver ahead reaches your braking point (unless you're lapping much faster, whereby, you'll be braking much later). Or, another method is to ease off the throttle a second before you brake. This gives a little gap, so you're less likely to make contact. It's especially useful when you're all in a tight pack, like lap one, so your car doesn't slow down suddenly and doesn't catch out the driver behind.

L3 T5 Mike Ratcliffe and Steven Foster

They enter the turn two wide – great stuff!
Mike, on the outside, closes the gap by drifting towards the inside of the turn. They touch side on, Mike takes to the grass, Steve, after a slight wobble is able to carry on unharmed.
If you're on the outside, stay wide. It may seem like you're still on your side of the road, but quite often you've drifted to the centre and beyond.

Racing incident

L3 Paul Brock and Derek Howe

Paul spins out of T2 and ends up rolling backwards across the track. Derek has no where to go but into him.
When you spin, come to a stop as quickly as possible, and then don't move when others are passing by.

Racing incident

L8 Mike Ratcliffe and Clive Gardner

Mike spins and ends up facing the wrong way with one wheel on the
track. After letting Steven by, he spins the car back onto the track.
Unfortunately, Clive comes round the corner and makes contact just as
Mike stops in the middle of the track.

I'll give it to Mike that he couldn't hear or see Clive as he made the
decision to enter the track, however, as there's a blind spot, extra
caution is needed when entering here. Difficult when you're facing the
wrong way, but if there isn't room, reverse to where there is.

Bad Rejoin reduced to one place as unable seen the victim.

  • Ratterspenalty — Bad Rejoin — 1 place lost (plus 2 for penalty points)

L15 Paul Brock

Stopped in pit lane alongside Paul Skingley for a few seconds, then
moved into the stalls.

  • Paul Brock — Stopping outside the stalls — 5.000 seconds added

L16 Dave Lawrence

  • david lawrence — Short pit stop by 4 seconds — 12.000 seconds added

L25 Bernie Darwin and Paul Brock

Bernie goes off the track at T2, hits the fence, drives back across
the track, then turns in and stops on the racing line. Paul needs to
take avoiding action.

As Bernie then Shift-r's, it would appear that the steering was bent
in the collision with the fence, but surely he could have avoided
stopping on the racing line.

  • berniepenalty — Bad Rejoin — 3 places lost (plus 1 for penalty points)

And last but not least, congratulations to Leroy for the win.

Moderator's Report

Start Mike Ratcliffe, Leroy Bailey and Dave Lawrence

Dave gets a slow start, Leroy and Mike try to pass on the right. As the turn for the banking approaches Leroy turns in causing the fast approaching Mike, in the middle, to turn away from Leroy into the side of Dave. No one mainly at fault here. A typical pick-up race incident. There's not enough room for four cars wide when it gets narrow.

If Mike hadn't taken Dave out then, Leroy would have squeezed him into Dave Howe.

I'd say, never use the extra width of track here, unless you know you'll definitely pass by the time it gets narrow. Leroy wouldn't have passed; Mike, behind, would have. Mike would also see that that Leroy would have to turn in – blocking the way through. The crash is caused by Leroy turning in.

Racing incident

Lap2 T1 Karl Doyle and Steven Foster.

Steve, on the entry to Curva Grande, is on the far left. Karl, who has just over taken Steve, is in the middle of the road and is about ¼ car length in front when they brake. Steve brakes slightly before, but Karl brakes harder and doesn't keep to the inside. Karl collects Steve.
For racing at very close quarters, to gage who is at fault here I'd have to ask who drove in the most predictable manor? Karl, passing Steve, would assume he'd stay on the left, and then brake at a point slightly before the brake point in order to keep to the left – and keeping to the left, because as he couldn't see he was in his mirrors, and have to assume he was still just behind him to the leftists is what Steve did. However, Steve, seeing Karl pass on the right, would assume that Karl knows where he is, and keep to the right allowing space for him on the left. As Karl didn't drive in a predictable way, the penalty goes to him.
Causing a crash by unpredictable driving: 2 Places

  • Karl Doylepenalty — Causing a crash by unpredictable driving — 2 places lost

Lap 3 Karl Doyle

  • Karl Doyle — Failing to take Stop & Go after Shift-R — 15.000 seconds added

Lap6 Derek Howe and Phil Thornton

Phil's upside down at Lesmo 2. Derek has yellow fags and has plenty of time to see Phil. He T-bones him. A lesson to slow down with yellow fags.

Racing incident

Lap 12 Clive Gardner
Clive does a drive through at 10mph instead of a timed pit stop.
I could apply the penalty: Failure to make mandatory pit stop: Exclusion. The mitigating factor is that he slowed down, so: Incorrect Pit Stop: 3 times the number of seconds gained.
I've calculated that he gained approx 2 seconds.

  • EvilClive — Gaining 2 seconds in the pits x3 — 6.000 seconds added

Lap 19 Dean Holloway and Paul Brock

Paul's car veers to the curb of T5, then into the fence on the opposite side. Dean is in the wrong place at the wrong time. He's collected by the sideways Paul.
Dean makes a good entry to the track.

Racing incident

Lap 19 Phil Thornton and Karl Doyle

Phil spins at T1 and ends up reversing down the alcove. He spins round to face the right direction, but collects Kyle.

  • Phil Thorntonpenalty — Inconsiderate Bad Rejoin — 1 place lost

Rob Burton's use of his engine looked like this:

L1 Shift-R engine - no pit-in.
L2 Shift-R engine - no pit-in. Stopped too near the racing line.
L2 Shift-R quicker exit of the sand - no pit-in.
L12 Shift-R engine/fuel? - no pit-in.
L21 Shift-R engine - no pit-in.
L21 Shift-R engine - no pit-in.

  • Burtoner — Failing to take Stop & Go after Shift-R six times — 90.000 seconds added

Lap 15 Clive Gardner

Clive pits for his scheduled stop, comes to a halt, but then creeps almost the full length of the pitlane. Not only was this unnecessary for a 20 second stop (GPL retires you after 30 seconds stationary), it gained valuable time. Comparing his stop to Phil Thornton, Clive was 2 seconds faster over the length of the pitlane, so I have applied the normal penalty of 3 times this amount.

  • EvilClive — Incorrect pit-stop — 6.000 seconds added

Lap 14 Dean Holloway

Dean pits for his scheduled stop, but doesn't make much of an effort to get tight to the pitwall, so I've issued a 5 second penalty in line with the other similar incidents for this season.

Lap 14 Rob Burton

Rob pits for his scheduled stop but is only stationary for 17 seconds of the required 20, so the penalty is 3 x 3 seconds.

  • Burtoner — Incorrect pit-stop — 9.000 seconds added

Lap 1 Karl Doyle v Mike Ratters

Karl comes from a long way back, never gets close to overlap and hits Mike as he turns in on the apex. This was never on and is almost as clear cut as they come. Being on lap 1 it attracts an extra place penalty.

  • Karl Doylepenalty — Over-ambitious overtake — 3 places lost

Lap 9 Derek Howe v Rob Burton

Derek runs very wide at the last corner, and Rob Burton sees a chance and overtakes down the inside. Rob slides slightly wide on the exit as Derek moves back to the inside a touch. Warp them compounds things and Derek is spun round, with Rob managing to hold on to a big wiggle. Neither driver did too much wrong here and without warp there would have been no contact, so:

Racing Incident

Lap 10 Mike Ratters

Mike spins at T1 and ends up facing backwards and towards the barrier on the outside. He spin turns the car, which leaves him pointing diagonally across the track. He then chooses to go just as Derek Howe is approaching, and with the aid of a little warp Mike clips Derek's car as he goes by. Derek is luck to hold on to the slide that results.

This was a bad rejoin to 2 reasons. Firstly, Derek could always have reversed back a bit after the spin turn to lessen his angle to the track. He could also have looked right to see the approaching car. The fact that warp was involved and Derek's survival means that the penalty is reduced by one place.

  • Ratterspenalty — Bad rejoin — 2 places lost (plus 4 for penalty points)

Rob Burton takes 3 shift Rs without doing any stop/gos.

  • Burtoner — Reset without SnG — 45.000 seconds added

Lap 23-24 Rob Burton v Steve Foster

Steve is coming up to lap Rob, who is in a close battle himself. Rob makes no effort to let Steve past, even when he was very close behind and a small lift would have been easy. Even though his battle was a distraction, this does not account for the length of time Steve was delayed.

  • Burtonerpenalty — Ignoring blue flags — 2 places lost (plus 1 for penalty points)

Moderator's Report

Lap 1 Clive Gardner, Mike Ratters

Clive mistakenly hits the teleport button on the start line and ends up in Burt's car. Mike then runs into Clive when unsighted as Clive's car doesn't move on the grid. Funny for the rest of us to read about, frustrating as hell for Clive and Mike.

Racing incident

Lap 1 Phil Thornton, Bernie Darwin, Robert Burton

Bernie is following the train of cars down to T2. Everyone ahead seems to be being careful, but Bernie goes a bit deeper and can't avoid running into Phil.

Bernie is clearly at fault here, and a full penalty on lap one would be 3 places, but I think this would be a bit harsh. He gets caught out a bit as Phil leaves quite a big gap ahead, so I've reduced the penalty by 1 place. I would suggest Bernie considers placing his car slightly to one side next time he follows a train into a braking area, as this would have allowed him to slide down the inside instead. Rob runs into Phil's car in the aftermath and should have taken more care in the circumstances.

  • berniepenalty — 2 place penalty, rear end shunt — 2 places lost (plus 3 for penalty points)
  • Burtonerwarning — Warning, lack of care approaching incident — also, 1 place lost for penalty points

Lap 1 Leroy Bailey, Bernie Darwin

Bernie is recovering from the previous incident, and in the following right hander he moves across the road in front of Leroy before he is up to speed, causing them to tangle. Bernie had a duty to stay off the racing line until up to speed and should have stayed right, but Leroy didn't help matters by slewing right just before contact. I think in the circumstances that a 1 place penalty is appropriate.

  • berniepenalty — 1 place penalty, bad rejoin — 1 place lost (plus 3 for penalty points)

Lap 1 Clive Gardner, Phil Thornton

Phil has a big crash on the way into Indianapolis and is launched into orbit. He lands right on the racing line just as Clive is approaching and Clive has no chance to avoid. Just one of those things I'm afraid. Clive does not perform a stop/go for the shift R he takes, and so incurs a time penalty.

  • EvilClive — 15 second penalty for missed stop/go — 15.000 seconds added

Lap 4 Steven Foster, Robert Burton

Steve is gaining on Rob at a great speed near the end of the long straight, and Rob takes the inside position to defend. Both brake very late, but Rob locks up and goes straight on at the corner, preventing Steve from turning in.

Although Rob was to blame, I can't say that he made a bad decision - he just got his braking wrong and it didn't work out for Steve.

Racing incident

Lap 5 Robert Burton

Rob only performs a 30 second stop instead of 45 seconds.

  • Burtoner — 45 second penalty — 45.000 seconds added

Lap 5 Chris Bull

Missed stop/go.

  • Bully — 15 second penalty for missed stop/go. — 15.000 seconds added

Lap 6 Derek Howe

  • Derek Howe — 15 second penalty for missed stop/go. — 15.000 seconds added

Lap 7 Derek Howe

  • Derek Howe — 15 second penalty for missed stop/go. — 15.000 seconds added

Lap 8 Derek Howe

Moderator's Report

Lap 3 Bernie Darwin v Steven Foster

Steven is following Bernie into T2 and takes a bit of a lunge down the inside. He is a long way short of having overlap before turn-in and there is contact at the apex as Bernie takes the racing line.

Steven didn't really have any right to attempt a pass here. He might have got lucky had Bernie slipped wide or seen him coming, but neither happened, so a full 2 place penalty seems appropriate.

  • Steven Fosterpenalty — Over-ambitious overtake — 2 places lost

Lap 5 Steven Foster v Karl Doyle

Steven is following Karl Doyle this time, again into T2. Karl spins mid corner and slides to the outside. Steven seems to get sucked into the incident and runs into Karl on the outside.

Lap 5 Steven Foster

Steven does a stop go at the end of the lap, but this appears to have been his planned pitstop.

  • Steven Foster — 15 second penalty for missed stop/go — 15.000 seconds added

Lap 7 Bernie Darwin v Robert Burton

Rob Burton is following Bernie into T4. Bernie runs wide onto the grass, loses control and starts to spin. He tries to catch it but fails, and the car spins back onto the track. Rob is also running round the outside, but seems to make no allowances for the spinning car ahead, accelerating around the outside. When Bernie's car spins back on track Rob runs onto him head on.

This was frankly silly in the extreme. With a car out of control on the edge of the track it was a optimistic to say the least to assume that it might not come back on track, so to accelerate towards it with no room for manoeuvre was asking for trouble.

  • Burtonerpenalty — Lack of care approaching an incident — 2 places lost (plus 1 for penalty points)

Lap 8 Robert Burton

Rob Burton resets but fails to do a stop/go.

  • Burtoner — 15 second penalty for missed stop/go — 15.000 seconds added

Lap 16 Steven Foster

Steven Foster has crashed at the inside of T3. As he rejoins he moves to the middle of the track as Bernie Darwin approaches, even though he is nowhere near up to speed. Bernie cannot get past, even though Steven does seem to make an effort to move back to the right.

I think here that Steven was too eager to rejoin, and didn't bother to check his mirrors beforehand. Not being up to speed he had a duty to stay off the racing line. I think he tried to do the right thing when he saw Bernie appear, but he should really have let Bernie past. Since he didn't I think a 2 place penalty is fair.

Lap 16 Bernie Darwin v Steven Foster

After Steven's rejoin, Bernie is following him into T5. They are level on either side of the track, and both driver try to pinch a bit of space on the apex and collide. Given that this was the last lap, that they both tried to leave some room and that they met in the centre of the track then I feel inclined to call it a racing incident. The fact that Bernie should have been ahead after the preceding rejoin and that Bernie did not lose a place as a result of the incident makes me think this was a just result.
