Moderator's Report

Summary

Despite a few uncharacteristic mistakes, Hristo won the race in the nimble Cooper with Lorenzo guiding the big BRM into second spot. Neil was the best of the rest securing third spot in yet another Cooper.

Server replay time: 0h01m32s

Lap 1 - Virage de la Gare

The inevitable single file procession through Virage de la Gare on lap one almost always causes problems. On this occasion the concertina effect caught up with Bernie after Art had practically come to a dead stop. Bernie nudged Art's gearbox and he was in turn hit by Amir with Will joining in the fun and gently tagging Amir.

The fact that no car was catapulted into the air was testimony to the sensible driving by all.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h13m24s

Lap 9 - Virage de la Gare

Kruger is following Syd and takes a tighter line through Virage de la Gare. As they exit the corner very slight contact is made and Syd is sent into a spin.

On all his previous laps, Syd had taken a very tight line but on this occasion he left his braking marginally later and ran slightly wide. Kruger took his normal tight line. This is quite a common occurrence on this corner nevertheless it is the following driver's responsibility to ensure there is no contact.

  • Kruger Engepenalty — Rear End Shunt — 1 place lost

Server replay time: 0h13m30s

Lap 9 - Virage de la Gare

After the shunt with Kruger, Syd is facing backwards on the racing line and is going to get hit unless he gets out of the way quickly. He tries a quick spin turn but he isn't quick enough and Clive clips his rear wheel before he completes the 180. Syd then waits for Clive and Steven to go by before he completes his recovery.

There wasn't much else Syd could do. He had a split second opportunity to try to avoid contact but unfortunately it didn't come off. If he had stayed where he was contact was guaranteed.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h14m05s

Lap 9 - Portier

Art spins on the exit of the corner before Portier and ends up orthogonal to the racing line. He lets Amir past and then tries to rejoin but Will is following closely and Art hits Will's offside front wheel.

Will continues but crashes out at the chicane. It is unclear from the replay and mechanical report whether or not the shunt with Art had any bearing on Will's crash.

Art was on the track but off the racing line (although it is quite hard to judge from the cockpit) consequently he should have waited until he was sure the track was clear. Neither driver reported the incident.

Advice - If you are on the track but off the racing line stay put until the track is clear. If you are on the racing line get off it as soon as possible.

Race length set and server tested this morning, all OK.

Remember this is the first time Div 1 have raced at Monaco under PRO rules.  There was a mass pileup last season but this season there will be no shift Rs so no second chances.

Quite often at Monaco it isn't a single error that causes a problem, more often than not it is a sequence of minor mishaps that culminate in an unavoidable shunt.  All the more reason to be extra careful.

Phew, that was hard work. Did bad at quali and then followed Syd and Brendan ahead, with Clive's Honda close behind. Once Brendan pulled away, I was following Syd for some 5-6 laps during which I was slightly faster but couldn't find a way past. Lap 9 I think it was, Syd goes slightly wide at La Gare while I take the normal line. Though I had no intention of passing there, as Syd recovered his line, I pipped his rear even though I braked to avoid that. Sorry Syd, I know I ruined your race but there was nothing I could do once we went round the hairpin.

It was then race with Clive for fifth, I tried to build a gap to compensate for my pitstop and once I stopped, Clive breezed past so I set off to chase him. Couldn't do much about it and eventually, couple of mistakes from him allowed me to close in on him. Then my engine blew up on lap 29.

Grats to podium and Clive Smiley

Grats to the Podium regulars and to Hrisrto for a rather quick FL in the Coop. i was never going to be in that company Angry Undecided

Well, I did much better than I expected Grin
The white whale was never going to be quick around Moanaco, but I thought I would maybe keep some of the "not quite aliens" in sight and the 6 secs pit stop advantage might play well for me.
Qually was poor, I blamed the pit crew and gave them a good kicking , even though I was more like an octopus with a nervous twitch trying to get a good lap in.
Think I started about 7th,  with Kruger and Syd in front of me. If I could whip the whale into a frenzy and keep them in sight I might be ok. Everyone appeared to behave themselves for the first lap and there were no wrecks  embedded in the armco ( shame cos it would have given me another place or two, still you cant have everything! Roll Eyes)
Fortunately for me, with such a heavy fuel load, the clutter of coops up ahead seemed to be slowing each other up and for the first few laps I held station quite happily and even eeked out a cushion over Mr Foster behind. It is rather tricky by the way, eeking a cushion out of Mr Foster. It involves a lot of eeking and only one cushion!!
a couple of small mistakes allowed Kruger and Syd to get a second or so clear but they were still in sight. Whereas, the alien brigade were over the horizon already.
I came upon Syd and Kruger playing pat a cake and passed Syd but Kruger did not have the decency allow me to slip through so I had to follow him for another few laps, until I made my SnG. I knew he would have to make his in the next lap or so and when I came out onto a clear track I pushed hard and was rewarded with the sight of K loitering in the Pits.
Prib showed a healthy gap back to K and I knew that he had been slightly quicker than me before his stop, so I concentrated on keeping things steady.
So Much concentration was used that I hit the Kerb approaching Virage and spun the ruddy thing. I could hear Steves Cooper coming and just manged to squeeze around the corner still in front!!
My tyres were in the red zone after the spin, so I had Steve on my back and a very slippy Honda.
A lap or two of very safe driving and defensive lines before I could pull away again. Kruger began to close and I caught glimpses of him in my mirrors, he did look very focused and intent on passing me thought!!
Just when I thought I might have to start defensive driving and try and protect my position to the end of the race, Kruger vanished and I was left all alone to pootle home keeping that Honda engine safe and sweet.
5th place and in Honda, with at least 3 aliens in front ( I'll let you 4 argue about who is the odd one out heee hee) and at Moanaco.
Grats to all the finishers, always a triumph in itself at Monaco Grin Grin Grin

Well for no particular reason, I selected the Honda. Self inflicted pain it was. Fiddled with a few set-ups last night and managed to beat the BM for the first time and it felt pretty stable.

Qually was fine and my high 29 put me at the back of the pack so I was just going to take it slow and low that was to be my tempo. All was going according to plan until I reached Virage de la Gare (L1) where I tapped Amir on the pipes and gave him a nose full of hay. Sorry mate. I started to wait but that only made matters worse. But his pass a few laps later down towards Tabac, was brilliant. Then I settled in (if thats even possible in the Honda) and managed a few "decent" laps but was dead last and Bernie was fading away in the distance. Then as I came around that blind corner towards Potier, Art was hiding and launched a surprise attack on me. Team C'n'B both burned. LOL. I was in Arts blind spot so it was just a RI. I recovered only to catch a wheel on the curb at the top of the chicane and that was all she wrote.

Grats to the podium and all the finishers. It was certainly a test of technical GPL skills and I failed.  Angry

Will
