Moderator's Report

A first win for Steve, with a strong consistent drive, and a first podium for Peter as he was at last on the slower grid.

Quite a good performance all round from the Novices, there was some odd driving which seems to be down to PC problems, hope you can fix them soon as there's nothing worse.

Server replay time: 0h12m51s

L4 after Combes

Sam is slow to recover after misjudging the corner but stays well to one side of the track. Al is able to watch him down the straight, but still changes line to rear-end him. I was puzzled, but perhaps this is an instance of a changed perspective when closing rapidly, that lured Al into the wrong move.

I've waived the yellow cards points as I believe that this incident was due to inexperience with GPL's representation of the situation.

Server replay time: 0h16m05s

L4 Source

Graham rear-ends Mike, who braked earlier than he had before.

Server replay time: 0h20m02s

L6 Eau Rouge

Sam leads Steve into L'Eau Rouge by about half-a-length. Steve doesn't allow enough room, though there was no effect on Sam from the slight and warp-affected collision.

Server replay time: 0h27m02s

L7 after Blanchimont

Al passes a recovering Maestro and there is side-to-side contact, however with little effect on Maestro. Al should allow more room to other cars in future though!

UKGPL Season 16 - Novices and Amateurs - Race 5 - 65 mod - Spa-Francorchamps

Four different race winners and still no clear leader in the Amateurs, while Norbert took advantage of Asbjeurn's absence to become the fastest Ferrari and leader of the Novices.  Spa is long enough that we should be able to run easily as a combined grid, while the recent server problems might leave me little choice as ukgpl3 is out.  We only had seventeen of nineteen starters last time so this time I'd like to fill the grid- the Novices take priority and might get an extended practice.

There has been another request for improved aero for the 65s- the RSC thread is here:  http://forum.racesimcentral.com/showthread.php?t=329607
While some consider the 66 tow excessive, the slower top speeds of the 65s would reduce this problem to a large extent.  Also, the current 65 model isn't that of the original cars as it was impossible to make it work- the crude solution was to increase top speeds 5%.  The 65s with tow might be fantastic racing- and of course the existing 65s would still be an option.

65 Mod

These were the 65 drivers
BT7 Bonnier, Baghetti, Hulme (Bonnier drove for Walker)
BT11 Brabham Gurney Gardner Anderson Siffert (Siffert drove for Walker, Gardner and Anderson were privateers)
Lotus Clark Spence Rodriguez Mitter Russo Solana (and Maggs Hailwood Attwood Amon and Ireland for Parnell)
Ferrari Surtees Bandini Rodriguez Vaccarella Bondurant Scarfiotti
Honda Ginther Bucknum
Cooper McLaren Rindt
BRM Hill Stewart

The 1965 season was the last to use the controversial 1500cc formula which had begun after 1960, to the initial advantage of Ferrari.  The 1965 cars are smaller than the 1967 cars and have less torque and hence more grip.  It was claimed that they 'cornered on rails', however this allowed the Grand Prix series to retain the use of circuits which were otherwise to prove extremely dangerous.

The 1965 cars are ideal for those new to GPL as they allow the tracks to be learnt in light reliable cars, however these are also full Formula One cars, and quite fast....  Jim Clark won the 1965 Belgian Grand Prix in a Lotus.  Graham Hill took pole in his BRM P261 with a time of 3'45.4 .  The 1965 distance was 32 laps.

David Wright's 'Legends' site http://fp.gplegends.plus.com/ has the download of the most recent 2.0.1 version (under 'details') as well as being an exceptional guide to both 1965 and 1967, for those interested in Formula One history.

Unfortunately the current 65 mod download does not have default setups.  Default setups for all the cars and tracks that are likely to be used can be downloaded from http://www.neurology-crew.com/gplserver under '65 setups'.  Note that you will have to add enough fuel for the race, whether short or long!

For what it's worth to anyone, my setup which I have a 3:40.090 so far. I don't pretend to be any sort of setup guru at all so make of it what you will, it might make a good base start-up for someone.

Haven't had much time to practise after my holiday last week but I think I'm around the times posted somewhere.

I based my setup on Steve Cloyd's which is pretty good right off.

I'm curious what sort of top speed are people getting and what are the chances of engine failure in this class with too many revs?

Certain cars (espesially the Honda) seem to blow engines for a hobby if you keep them wound right up for long periods, As I practice offline in Pro realism I generally get through at least 4 engines while setting up for each race  Shocked
This shouldn't really be a worry for us as the '65s are run at intermediate damage model so should be fairly bombproof - I've yet to kill an engine when actually racing in them*  Smiley

Can't comment on top speeds yet as I won't start on my setup till tonight....

* Shame the same can't be said for my '66 driving  Roll Eyes

I've blown a BT11 engine in the race at Watkins Glen, so it's worth being slightly cautious.

I'm getting around a 168mph top end.

One tip I did get that cut my lap time was to increase tyre pressures.  I'm running at around 28/29 psi.

Hope that helps a bit.

I won't be able to attend this race either. Sad I guess the internet connection will be okay 'till tomorrow after the moving, but the flat is still packed with boxes and plastic bags and furniture that's still not reassembled. There are two rooms that need to be painted before we can use them, so the furniture that's supposed to be in those rooms is stacked in the room that we've agreed on being the office/computer room/play room/GPL room.

I was going to do some painting this weekend, but got a nasty fever that knocked me out. Didn't have the energy to start on any larger projects than moving some boxes here and there, fire up the stove and such. Really annoying.  Angry

That's a real shame Asbjeurn.  Hope you can make it back soon.  Best of luck with the flat and hope you start to feel better soon.

I've tried all sorts of gearings but the fastest I can get out of the Cooper is 162mph - I know it's a slow car anyway but nowhere near Steve's 168

I was struggling to learn in the Lotus so Dave gave me a chance to swap. Finding my car control is much better in the Cooper but downside is fast tracks - posting around 3.51 so hopefully won't get lapped. Shame there isn't a magic setup to get me to 170mph  Smiley

3:51 is quite good, last time I raced here, which was only 6 races ago, I was posting 3:55's, I'm still not that much better now. I'v ebeen finding out the hard way that lap times doesn't count for much if you don't keep it on the track. I really need to work on that.

Thats a pitty indeed Asbjeurn . Hope you will be healthy again soon and as well hope you can arange the new flat fast and nice. best wishes .

-----------

@Vosblod , I have no idear how to increase a Cooper`s topspeed.  In general higher pressure to the tyres and more neutral settings to toe /in and out should generated higher topsspeed on a long straight.

btw. my Ferri is doing max 275 kmh at Spa. ( for part of a second ).

Phil has kindly offered us the use of his server ukgpl4 for this race, so I've modified the race details above.

One of the disadvantages of chassis allocation is inflexibility, but as this is no problem to someone who can spin the sky of East London around his P261, I've decided that I am allowed to make a small number of car changes during the season.  I had barred the Novices from the Cooper and BT7 but the Cooper is a popular Novice car so I've allowed Vlad to switch.  I've also offered Clive a BT11 to replace his BT7 to provide yet more competition up front- though he seems reluctant to take it.  Perhaps the BT7 is best left to the very fastest drivers, or maybe there should be a category of BT7/11 with a midseason switch.

On this subject, with this race we reach the mid-season point at which I'll start planning next season.  The chassis allocations should be easier after a season's racing.  I'm also tempted to introduce Clermont next season, we might have Clermont as a preseason race.  Other than that, any suggestions are welcome.

I think it would be a great idea to race at Clermont as a pre-season race. I've always liked the track and I'm sure the rest of the novices would find it loads of fun. If everyone feels ambitious enough, would anyone fancy tackling the Nurburgring maybe? It's probably easiest to learn in the 65s.
