40 minutes to go and I can't manage a lap with all the wheels still on the car.

Dont know how my car stayed in one piece after that . I always seem to have problems with the gears on 66 mod , Spa was no exception , after twidling my way through practise I decided I needed a longer top gear for draughting ( It never happened ) a longer 3rd for the dreaded Eau Rouge,  and a shorter 2nd for Les Combes .
The outcome was an untried gearset for the race resulting in me destroying the Eau Rouge Armco on L1 (great escape No1) and soon finding that 3rd was way too high for Malmedy but grabbing 2nd mid corner was tending to lock the rear wheels  so that on one lap I skated straight  into the Malmedy briar patch where 20 minutes of revving ,reversing , cursing and franticly waving the gear lever around finally got me back out onto the dark bit again and amazingly still in one piece (great escape No2) These antics allowed our latest member Steve ? to then catch and pass me so I was back in my usual 66 mod position i.e. last place.  I then decided to drive carefully and recorded my best lap which was 4 secs off my practise best !

Why do I do it ? Am I the only one who has the late tweek syndrome ? or do any of you guys try last minute tweeks ? I suppose its frustration in the end that causes a large dose of PANIC

Grats to the Pod and all those who finished  Smiley

Yes well done Steve.  Great drive in your first 66 mod race with UKGPL.

I never do any last minute tweeks.  I usually try to find an easy set up to drive, do 4 or 5 laps on qually fuel then put race fuel in and try to settle in to be consistent.  But then who am I to give advice, I'm slooow LOL  wheelchair.

Lol Bernie, I know what you mean about the temptation of last minute tweaks or gear ratio adjustments, even tyre pressures!!! in the search for another magical3secs off you lap times...if only it was that easy  Roll Eyes

Eventually, I decided that it was better to stick with what I had and had driven, at least that way there would be no surprises in the firat lap of the race and an early exit. Allowing of course for my ability to throw my car at the scenery without provocation.

Even in private practice now I tend to work with what I've got and not try and find the golden setup,. Better to modify my driving to maximise the setup...this usually means being smoother and concentrating harder on apexes etc. rather than reverting to right foot braking or totally alien diff setups.

I suspected that someone had fitted a Keel to the underside of my Ferrari, because it had absolutely no intention of turning corners without severe physical intervention from throttle and steering, which made life interesting to say the least!!
Thoroughly enjoyed last nights race. Early laps chasing Hristo, until I put a wheel on the slippery bit exiting Stavelot ( just as I was going to make my move and blitz past him into an unassailable lead of course!! Wink ) I then suffered Bernie's problem of extracating myself from the hedgerow, just in time to see Syd and Tim cruise past at full chat!!

It seems that the hedge inflicted some tracking adjustments to the front of the Fez and I was a definitely slower after recovering. I managed to pull myself into the "tow Zone" behind Tim and squeezed a pass to get after Syd, who got very wobbly into the fast pair of left handers at the end of the lap. Fortunately I chose the only piece of tarmac that Syd was not writing his name on to slide through and back into a very distant (from Hristo) second spot. Tim was a few seconds behind and, with the slightly wayward handling of that big Fez, was able to close slowly until he went a little awry at the top of the hill and left me a comfort zone which I protected to the flag.
Hristo suddenly appeared on the radar only  a few seconds ahead with 2 laps to go but there was no chance of rejoining battle with my damaged car and he extended the gap again.
Better result than I expected given the handling of the Fez and the excursion into the undergrowth and at a circuit which I have never enjoyed for some reason.

Grats to all for a great race and to our noobie, Steve, who made it to the finish, something many of us failed to do in our early on line races...or was that just me Huh??

I almost always do last minute tweaks, Bernie, and usually get away with it but sometimes it goes horribly wrong. It's a bad habit but I can't help it.

Race was a fun battle early on with Clive who I had to defend from any time I had not so good exits as his powerful fezza easily caught up. My car was understeering more and more as the race progressed and if it wasn't for his mistake I doubt I could've held him behind later on. Had some nasty offs but somehow made it to the finish in one piece.

Hiristo , It's refreshing to here you aliens also have problems  Wink

I beleive a little understeer is preferable on the faster tracks as it helps stabilise the car.  I found my Cooper also suffered too much which killed the exit speed , vital at Spa out of those fast corners.

A good set up for me has slight initial understeer which can be overcome with judicious use of the gas peddle,  at least that's what I would feel comfortable with and try to aim for. But the 66 chassis don't seem to do what I want. Maybe its a lack of 66 mod practise and becoming more familiar with the cars characteristics .Same could be said of the 65's I suppose. Come to think of it I'm not that great in 67's but I do use setups that are driver friendly even if they are slooooow Undecided

I also like to use greater ride height than the "hot lappers" do simply because I think the longer suspension travel which comes with it gives a more realistic "feel" to the car and is easier (for me anyway) to control,  even if it is at the expense of a little speed. IMO of coarse  Roll Eyes
