I have been musing on the problem of long GT races. It seems to me that if you set the laps so that it would take (say) 1 hour and five mins to complete, you can then drive for an hour and dive into the pits. Someone else (who started in the pits or drove round to the pits) who has been waiting for an hour drives out and drives for an hour - repeat the process and the last driver drives until the chequered flag. You get a three hour race with three drivers that would have taken 1 hour and five normally.

A) Would that work or would GPL time drivers out?
B) Can you start from the Pits or would team members have to drive round 1 lap to start - can cars then wait there fro two hours?
C) How easy would it be to combine results afterwards manually

Benefits are that you wouldn't know where you are so you have to push - no taking it easy at the front...

Anyone got any views or better ways of doing it?

I do like Evils idea of doing a test season for GT mod. If it works maybe we would think about some kind of endurance division.

Theres one problem with that. GPL allow only 19 drivers(+ server) to race online. So with this system we wouldn't have to big grid.

We can simulate drivers change in GPL. We can have 3h races and every team would have 2 drivers. Every 3h race would be divided into two 1.5h races/stints. Afther race/stint 1 second group of drivers will enter server, in the same order at the first stint ended.
If first driver had a DNF, than team would get 1 or 2 laps penalty.
This system worked quite well, when Simracing.cz organised two 24h races on rfactor. I don't see a reason why it shouldn't work witch GPL

To make it more fun, we could use a rolling start Wink

Quote
Races will feature a rolling start.
Once everybody is on the grid and green lights have been shown, drivers will start a formation lap at low speed. Do not overtake, keep a good margin with other drivers.
After the last turn, cars will keep rolling at reduced speed in the starting grid formation.
When the leading car will be in sight of the start/finish line, an admin will give the real start of the race by typing "GREEN FLAG" in the chat.
Thats from HSO rules

Yep - I'd forgotten about the 19 car limit.

Do you have any idea if the general approach would work?

The problem with waiting in the pits is that GPL will disconnect you if you remain still for something like 20 secs.

This was a problem we had when we used pitstops in the 67's. If you allocated stop was over 10 secs, then it was necessary to blip the throttle and creep forward a few feet every 10 secs just to confuse the software and stay on the server.

I can't say that I would look forward to doing that for an hour just to find I get it wrong 5 minutes before my stint is due to start and I find myself disc'od lol!! Shocked

Thanks for that Clive. I suspected that might be the case. May have to get the assembler out and create a GPLGT.EXE - on second thoughts, I am too long in the tooth for reverse engineering.

I think you might be wise to avoid trying that. I think there have been a few attempts to crack the "pitstop problem" within the GPL community.

The latest patch appears to be the best on offer as yet ( although I have not tried it), but there seems to be an inherent software problem that makes the modification very tricky..............but I know nothing about software unless its a woolen jumper.
