No - it's the class D roundy roundy car.

My race-winning setup for the GP circuit from the penultimate ORO season 2 round is on the TS web site as usual.

Late Model = Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS in marketing speak.

Shweeeeeeet :). I imagine that'll be hard going but a lot of fun if we get a decent turnout, these cars are ace.

I hope these fun races will be a regular thing! My Lotus needs dusting off for starters.

Is the Late Model going to be an official car in the season? If yes, I might buy it, if not, I won't. For now. Like Spanner says, I bought lots of things that I don't use. At all. :(

As a gtr2 fan like me & I think all the other gtr2 iRacers... The late model is cracking!

There is an excellent Saturday night series that runs it on non-oval tracks that a few of us here enter. It's just a shame it starts at 8pm as that often stops me :(

You mean official in SRou? No. There's an official iRacing series of course, though with only one road week at Lime Rock (which is a shame). I've mostly been running it in ORO on Saturday nights, where I've wrapped up 2nd in the championship with two consecutive wins. ;D

Title: Re: iRacing Fun Race - Zandvoort (National) - Apr 27
Post by: popabawa on April 22, 2010, 08:21:27 AM +0100
I selected this combo because it'll give us a chance to have a run-out at a new track that I suspect most of us don't know that well but also to give people, like me, a chance to try out the Late Model on a road circuit who haven't tried it up to now.

I hope that will make the voting more informed for S4.

Think I prefer the "club" circuit to the "national" one if we're doing a short version. They're exactly the same except the the club one swaps a hairpin for a decent corner. Should be good though :)

Every time I drive this Late Model on a road track (which sadly is all to rare, I wish the ORO races started later, 8pm is just impossible for me most weeks) it just convinces me more that it's the class act of iR.

Found some pace this evening .... really enjoying hot-lapping with this combo, but I'm not too sure about how the race is going to go.  Following Don it was very hard to see an opportunity, I think consistency is going to be key (not that it isn't usually :D) and mistakes in front of you is where the passing opportunities are going to come.

Yeah I'm with you Adam (unfortunately not on pace!), that was such fun just lapping on me lonesome - should be a good giggle if we get a decent turnout.

The LM feels brilliant around here even if my time doesn't reflect that (1:19.x) - I think I've possibly got a little too much oversteer happening out of the slow corners but it's an incentive to unwind the steering more smoothly and carry more speed so no real problem, just more practice needed me thinks!

Still getting caught out at the hairpin that turns the full track into the national though! When I eventually do calm down and get the speed scrubbed off, I feel like I'm completely lost for about a second while the curb disappears and I have no idea where the apex is - makes for a nice challenge but I need to get that sorted early on as it's anything but precise currently.

Just for my own curiosity - did I imagine this being scheduled as a longer event at one point!?

I wouldn't worry about it. I have no idea where the apex is either, I just get it slowed down in time for the corner and turn. It doesn't seem to matter about the racing line for me, it's all about actually having braked early enough to simply get around the corner not about taking it well as I don't think you can take that corner well as it's not really a corner, it's like a shortcut through the bushes or something. :)

Must admit I'm in two minds about tonight's race because Zandvoort is so narrow that it's not particularly suitable for racing cars together full stop, but put these massive bricks on the road and it will either be a precession or lots of argy bargy. I'd like to be proved wrong of course, we'll see.

My 10 laps of practice from the weekend should be enough so probably won't join you till qualifying.

I remember the two cars that were released for rF which I loved, 60't things, a cobra and a ferrari of some sort, these are just like the cobra 'em :-)

I got the wrong fuel, no matter, start from pit lane, except it insisted on toe'ing me, and also it would not put fuel in either! Grrrrrr

Then I got a speeding penalty exiting the pits

Not the best start.

Had a great little (fake) fight with Don for a while, then Picnic caught me up so I though I'd better let him past as he was really meant to be fighting with Don. Picnic got past Don and then some laps later I punted Don (sorry dude, all my fault, I was dozing).

I enjoyed it even though I was always gonna be loads of laps down.

Wasn't the V8 meant to be out by now?

Good race, although off the top three's pace.   Had Simon snapping at my heals for 2 thirds of the race and knew it was only a matter of time before he would get past.  I was having trouble in the middle of the corners due to lack of experience in the car, probably needed to use a bit more throttle to steer the car .  Simon got a good run of the last corner which i could of defended but i thought he'd spent enough time getting held up so stayed on line and he passed on the inside .  Simon pulled a gap straight away and i could see Michael in my mirrors , luckily for me he lost it coming out of the 3rd corner.     Started running out of fuel going into the hairpin on the last lap and then spun on low revs which gave Michael 4th.
Should have taken a look at the fuel and short shifted ...or just put some more fuel in it. ::)

Grats to Paul and the Gymer Bro's.

That was really hard work.

Never settled down in Q and failed to match my PB, consigning me to 5th on the grid.  That carried over into the race where I couldn't seem to settle into the track and kept overdriving corners.  Finally got my act together as Shark passed Dan and I began to close in.

I was almost to Dan's bumper when I spun :( which robbed me of a fun battle.  Still I pushed like hell to the end and hoped something might happen to Dan.  He was really slow on the last lap and I guessed he had fuel problems, looked like I would get him anyway, but he spun just to make sure.

4th place, sore arms and I need a change of shirt  ;D

Not all your fault Martin, more 70/30 :P

Well, I managed to join in during quali & get in about 5 laps practice. The late starts net season are going to help me  on Tuesday's now too. :)

Was really looking forward to this, love Zandvoort, love the Late model on the roads & because there's no reset, it makes everyone subconsciously ultra careful! :thumbup1:

Race spoilt from lap one turn one & turn two. Kept going with wonky steering & managed to let the first four past on the straight on separate laps, but I think it was Mike next & I couldn't get round quick enough, so pulled well wide, nudged a barrier in the process... followed him round two turns & missed my brake point so skidded to a stop next to the wall & decided to call it a night.

With a reset (= damage repair) I'd have happily repaired the car & spent the rest of the race thoroughly enjoying the car. I'm sure I'm not the only one. It's not all about the winning & a reset is a must! >:(

Having said that, well done the winner & podiums ;D

Sorry to whoever it was I got caught up with on lap1 turn 1? I had no way to avoid you and only saw you sideways in front of me, I guess I'd nudged you round without even seeing you were there :(

Enjoyed that a lot otherwise, fun car and track.
The guys in front were too quick for me and tried to hold my place, but a mistake in the chicane saw Pete close in and then made a
nice move into T1 to get by., I had no answer and knew I was going to be low on fuel, just tried to hang on :)
Np Fozz I'd eased off a bit trying to make sure I could finish on fuel, my bad.

Lets hope we get this car out on the Roads again.

That was great fun to drive, but very processional. Qualifying effectively sorted out the top 5 order, except that I somehow managed to pass Dan to take 3rd. Was forced to follow him for two thirds of the race with just the hope that he might make a big enough mistake on the final corner to try something. It wasn't forthcoming till about two thirds of the way through. He had some lairy moment through the last corner and I slipstreamed him down the straight, popped out and stuffed it down the inside with my engine screaming at the deceleration. Pulled away after that.

Had realised the fuel was going to be tight and wish I'd ignored Gizmo and put in one click more than he suggested (on the better to be safe than sorry school of thought) cause even early on I realised it was so tight I'd better us 4th gear through the last corner. As we came closer to the finish I started short shifting everywhere and on the last lap I practically drove in 3rd/4th gear for the whole lap to make it across the line spluttering with 0.2 gallons remaining.

Really enjoyed that combo of car/track to drive, but as I said it couldn't really make for great racing, especially with that coned off hairpin bit in the middle. Well done to Paul and Gizmo, Paul too good for everyone and Gizmo did the business in qually.

Post by: Dave 'Gizmo' Gymer on April 27, 2010, 10:05:35 PM +0100
I'm still at a loss to know why the fuel numbers are so all over the place sometimes. I tested 15.1 and 16.5 in practice and was sure that 15.1 was fractionally short but 16.5 was more than enough. Yet in the race, despite some drafting early on, I was still tight enough to feel the need to save a little in the middle of the race. ::)

I knew from the ORO race that pole was on the outside, so I was quite happy to be 2nd. Not that I could've gone any quicker.

Got a great start but braked conservatively for T1 knowing that a bent car would mean no chance of the win and slotted in behind Paul. Pushed him as hard as I could for a few laps, using the draft down the main straight to make sure he didn't simply drive away, but eventually I got a bad exit from somewhere or other and he got just enough of a gap to break the tow, after which I could just about match him but could never close the gap.

Did a bit of fuel saving in the middle of the race just to make sure and then pulled my finger out again once Shark got past Dan as I was clearly okay for fuel again and didn't want to have to defend. Paul must've made a little mistake somewhere in the closing laps as I closed up by almost a second, but I still couldn't close the gap and had to settle for a satisfying second.

Really like the Late Model on roadies. ;D

Shame Pops, hope everything is ok at home. I was expecting a race long battle there too you weren't far behind and our practice and qual times were almost identical.

Had an atrocious start and ended up dead last. Guess I got lucky ;) Avoided the accident and found myself chasing (I think it was) Legzy with Pops chasing me. Managed to get passed Legzy and opened a little gap before Pops got passed. Then watched at the time came down more times than it went up. As a said shame it ended the way it did. Still, left me to chase down Don. I had the same fuel as Shark and Dave but as I was slower I had more left at the end. This meant I was free to chase Don and probably benefited from his fuel shortage but enjoyed the chase.

These cars are great on the road. Shame the Mazda won out ;)

That was fun - I totally agree that the Late Model is great on the road courses. Managed to get pole but Dave had a better start and I really expected him to dive down the inside at T1. I was getting ready to run the wall of death round the outside when he braked at very early, which let me off the hook completely. There was very little in it between us for the whole race, with little mistakes making the gap yo-yo around. I had a big moment in the last corner mid race when I took too much inside curb and gave back a nice chunk of time, but otherwise I could keep just out of reach and inch ahead. I saw you drop back a bit Dave and assumed you were having 2nd thoughts about fuel, so I checked mine and felt I had enough. You picked the pace up afterwards though, so it didn't slow you that much. Near the end the gap was nearly 3 secs so I could ease off a fraction, but every lap was a challenge - you can't ask for much more than that. I wonder what would have happened if Simon had been in 3rd from lap 1 as he clearly had the pace. Probably would have made me nervous as well as Dave! Grats to both the Gymer boys for the podiums anyway. I must say it is nice to beat Dave on 'home territory' as it were after he taught us all a lesson at Brands. Sorry to see the unfortunate mess at T1/2 as the LM is a great car for everyone to drive, especially for those who hate the skippy, but these were the ones who lost out tonight  :(

I agree with Simon re the track - the national circuit really only has one overtaking spot - T1. Personally I would rather stick with the biggest layouts unless there is a very good reason not to (like Donington) and the GP circuit offers a much bigger challenge as well as more overtaking chances IMO. I too am disappointed not to be racing the LM this season.

Yep that was me! Unfortunately as a result my spinning car also ended at least Adam and Ade's races before the second corner too.

The rest of the race was all I could hope for with a bodyshell hanging off and steering 45 degrees out but well done Paul and the fishy types, great driving. I'm not just saying that, I watched some of the hot laps afterwards and took notes for the next visit! ;) Pretty sure you've uprated those brakes though, they can't have been what I had on mine heheh.

Sorry to hear your race was cut short Pops - hope all is ok and thanks for hosting.

I too will be hoping we get to do some more LM races on road circuits - I think they've got fantastic potential for close racing, even if perhaps this configuration wasn't ideal for overtaking.

So then, Mazdas at Sebring! :)

I must say it is nice to beat Dave on 'home territory' as it were after he taught us all a lesson at Brands.

LOL!

Thanks for the best wishes guys, it was just that my little boy isn't very well at the moment and I had to jump out when I heard him crying as Mrs Pops was out and I was on my own.

Unfortunately I put the car into the wall as I lost concentration fo a moment. I'm sure Fozz has a good view and had a little chuckle ;)

Not sure what happened into T1 Martin, you got a good start but I managed to stay ahead, I saw you'd backed off so I was 100% confident I had a gap into the corner (the spotter said I was clear too) and was pretty surprised when you turned me around, I'll have to look at the replay to see what I could have done better.
