Title: UKGPL Season 41 (Autumn 2022) 1955 GP (Works) - Ain-Diab - Nov 20

Season 41 – 1955 Grand Prix – Round 6 – Works - Ain-Diab

For the sixth race in the 1955 Grand Prix series we sail across the Mediterranean to Morocco. The Moroccan Grand Prix was held on four different circuits between 1925 and 1958. Apart from Agadir, all the circuits are in the Casablanca area. The 1958 Moroccan Grand Prix (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPrMkgQq2vc) was held on the Ain-Diab circuit which, in part, ran along a stretch of coastline know as La Corniche (https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/33%C2%B035'09.8%22N+7%C2%B041'13.8%22W/@33.5892624,-7.6932768,14z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d33.5860446!4d-7.6871727?hl=en). The race was famous for deciding the 1958 world championship. Stirling Moss, in a Vanwall, needed to win the race with Mike Hawthorn, driving a Ferrari, finishing no higher than third. Moss did everything he could, winning the race and setting the fastest lap but he needed his teammates, Tony Brooks and Stuart Lewis-Evans, to finish ahead of Hawthorn. But it wasn’t to be, both Brooks and Lewis-Evans suffered engine seizures and were out of the race. Phil Hill, Hawthorn’s teammate, moved over to allow Mike Hawthorn to take second place and with it the world championship by a single point. Brooks walked away from his Vanwall but Stuart Lewis-Evans was not so lucky. His car spun off the road, burst into flames and although he climbed out, but Lewis-Evans was very badly burned. Tragically Stuart Lewis-Evans died from his injuries eight days later. Devastated, Tony Vandervell closed his team. Vanwall had just won the first ever Constructors' Formula 1 Championship but they would never race again.

Track Limits.  For the purposes of moderating, the track boundary will be the outer edge of the gravel "shoulder". So the desert is outside the track boundary, the gravel is inside the track boundary. Drivers should keep 2 wheels inside the track boundary (i.e. on the gravel) at all times. However, the gravel is a bit slippery so the fastest line will probably be to keep 2 wheels on the tarmac.

I anticipate being MIA for this round, chaps.  Heavily involved with a house move.

Have fun!  :)

Edit: Updating...  Scheduling for the move has been revised.  I may be able to make the show after all.

Good news Doni.

I think that last time we raced here we decided that the track limit was the outer edge of the gravel, although this was just for adjudication of corner cutting. (As it says above.)

I think that it is also worth pointing out that the tarmac is rather narrow and that motoring down the centre of the track is not a legitimate means of defending ones position.

Good point Clive. The rules are quite clear, centreline driving is not allowed (see bullet point 9 under general here (https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/rules/etiquette), and the penalty guidelines regarding blocking here (https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/rules/blocking_weaving)).

This doesn't mean anyone has to drive on the gravel to avoid being accused of blocking. Stay on the tarmac, but not in the middle. When someone is trying to overtake; pick one side or the other.

Guess who forgot to have his setup applied to both qualifying and the race?  ::)

Despite too many years in GPL to count, it still happens to me as well Leo, but that might be something to do with old age lol.
Grats to Clive and to a great recovery from Leo to take 2nd.

There were times during this race that I began to feel in control of the car again after several months of indifferent performances. Well, in control for large sections of the track except for that ruddy T4!! In 19 laps I think I only got that corner right on one occasion lol!

Some great dicing with Pete and Jonny and a couple of scary moments, but altogether good fun.

The recovery of Leo wasn't soe great at all, rejoining into my racing line.

I had a grandstand view of that one, luckily for me I managed to avoid the spinning cars. I suggest you submit an incident report and the moderators will look at it.

Well the reko its not helping me anyway, the race was over.

i got thrown over a wall and raced back through the real grandstands along the finish straight, luckily i could glitch thorugh them.
But i misjudged the length of the straight, there were race visitors in short distance, i didn't see anything else then rows of them.
To my misfortune there were standing just until the corner and i could not get the car to stop until the wall.

I used gravel many times, but because I had fps problems, I reached a frightening 15 fps in some curves. It makes it impossible for me to ride properly and if I don't fix this problem with this track, I won't be back. If the next championship continues with a discard this won't be a problem :)

But what makes me angry is that the last Dundrod or Targa and Isle of man, which are heavy tracks!!! I don't have any problem.

That was a lucky win.

Yannick and Leo were both faster than me but Yannick had a Ferrari Strategy moment in the pits and Leo very helpfully threw himself into the trees twice at the same corner when in front of me. I was most grateful..

I was greatly relieved to find that I still had four wheels attached after Pete dive-bombed me at the end of the back straight. I saw you coming and thought "Surely not!" But you did.

I must also investigate the calibration of my pedals as when I came to lap Fulvio, I couldn't even pass his little red car without doing something silly at the end of the straight.  Fulvio probably wondered what I was messing about at.

Hi Jonny, I had problems with frame rate last time that we raced here just after I had switched to an Nvidia graphics card. There is a thread on the subject here somewhere which shows how Axel solved the problem for me.  :thumbup1:

My bad!  :wetfish:  So glad that you got away with it. My Mercedes survived so v happy with P4. Apologies for adding to the stress but congrats on the win. It's not often I challenge for the lead so I guess I got over excited. Serves me right. Lesson learned.

I put in a couple of decent laps in qually to get P5 on the grid but hanging onto that would be a big ask with all the Mercs around me. Sure enough my 5th became 9th almost immediately as I found myself in neutral as the flag dropped ::)

I got going and managed to pick up a few places as others fell by the wayside. As expected the Mercs pulled away easily on the straights so it was a matter of trying not to make mistakes and finish. I had a decent battle with Enrique in another Maserati and luckily for me he seems to have made more mistakes than I did. The main problem I had was running out of brakes. It was very difficult to get into a rhythm because any slight variation in line and braking point exacerbated the brake fade which made the inconsistencey even worse.

A very tough track that sorted out the men from the boys. I'm clearly a lot younger than I look :o

Well done to Clive on a deserved win, your championship points tally is looking a lot better now  :)

I had the same fps problem since Dundrod race, then before this race I found that Nvidia panel had lost all the GPL exe profile that I had saved long time ago. I registered the profiles for every Mod exe and it worked good again.
Too bad I was absolutely unready for this race and tired after a trekking day so I was out of pace and I think I nailed only a couple of laps without going wide on the three hairpins.  :-[
