Title: UKGPL Season 38 (Spring 2021) 1967 F1 Grand Prix - Tripoli - Apr 16 Post by: EvilClive on April 13, 2021, 04:27:35 PM +0100 Season 38 – 1967 GRAND PRIX – Round 6 – Tripoli
For the 6th round we are going to Libya. We visit the very fast circuit at Mellaha Lake, Tripoli. The track was a 13.140 kilometre (8.165 mi) long affair situated in a salt basin between Tripoli, Suq al Jum'ah and Tajura and around the Mellaha Air Base. The track's most distinctive landmark was a brilliant white concrete tower situated across from a large front stretch grandstand that could hold up to ten thousand people. Mellaha Lake was equipped with starting lights, an innovation, and the additional amenities rivalled the best that continental European circuits had to offer. Back in the late thirties this was the fastest track of the world.

it was nice to race again after a two months brake. I am back from Malta since beginning of April and I was looking forward to some online racing (even if I think Tripoli is a bit boring as the straights are slightly too long). I had a superb start and was able to overtake Phillipe and Raoni right away. I could follow in the slipstream of Axel and was very close to him before the first braking zone but I backed off. It seemed to risky to go into the braking zone side by side and I knew Axel would easily overtake me being two seconds faster during quali and with the help of the Eagle's superior top speed. So I decided to save time by not battling with him for P1. Afterwards I managed to stay a few seconds ahead of Phillipe (he passed me once but spun a lap later) and Raoni till my pit stop at the end of lap 15. I thought I would have a lonely race afterwards, but Philippe was pitting a few laps later. I think I had a 6 or 7 seconds lead over him but he was closing in with around 0,5-0,8s per lap. It looked like he would catch me in lap 30 or 31. So I needed to do a few qualifying laps. It was very intense to drive at the edge without doing any mistake. I think I profited from one or two small mistakes of Phillipe and managed to stay ahead till the end. Thanks for the battle Phillipe! @ Axel and Raoni How did you manage to get through without pitting. I tried 31laps during one practice session and I was running out of fuel during the very last lap. So I needed to pit. But in the race I never had to push hard so at the end I had 10 liter left. I reached my top speed of 327kph at ~9850rpm so never revved to the max... PS Just compared in the GPLRA you shifted 16x vs me 12x per lap and used much higher revvs. I had my gears as long as possible and never used 1st Title: Re: UKGPL Season 38 (Spring 2021) 1967 F1 Grand Prix - Tripoli - Apr 16 Post by: Claudio Navonne on April 17, 2021, 12:19:11 PM +0100 I am very sorry that I was not able to run this race. But my wife woke up with symptoms compatible with covid19 and I had to take care of accompanying her to the PCR tests, accompany her at home and dedicate myself to the Friday task: go to the supermarket, do the shopping and then dedicate myself to the part of my work that I do at home with the computer. Luckily my wife has no fever and only a headache, I have no symptoms so far.
I hope to be there for the next one. Title: Re: UKGPL Season 38 (Spring 2021) 1967 F1 Grand Prix - Tripoli - Apr 16 Post by: Raoni Frizzo on April 17, 2021, 04:50:38 PM +0100 @ Axel and Raoni I made the same calculation Axel made. According to I calculated, I would need 170,5 litres to do 31 laps. How did you manage to get through without pitting. I tried 31laps during one practice session and I was running out of fuel during the very last lap. So I needed to pit. Since I used 5th gear 1 click longer than usual, I guess I could save fuel throughout the race. Also, I worked on gear ratios to prevent shifting too many times and not using high revs frequently. The only corner I put 3rd gear was the right one in the 1st sector. All the rest of the track I used 4th or 5th gears. My race was nice. Despite losing two places at the start, I was confident to have a good race pace. The first laps were quite hard to deal with the huge amount of fuel in the car. I could overtake Philippe, but made my only mistake in the race spinning in the slow corner, dropping down back to 4th place. With Markus and Philippe's pit stops, I was promoted to 2nd and could build a safe gap from them, at that point with a lighter and easier car to drive. Catching Axel was absolutely impossible. His Eagle was flying and he drove a flawless race! Congratulations! I had a very good evening. If I had used the ferrari like you, I would not have been able to keep in touch with you. You are faster. It's only thanks to the eagle that I managed to follow you. I still have to train, because I made several mistakes as a beginner. Bravo axel, bravo podium, bravo all the finishers ! Sorry to hear that, I hope you are both well and that the test is negative! I worked on gear ratios to prevent shifting too many times and not using high revs frequently. The only corner I put 3rd gear was the right one in the 1st sector. All the rest of the track I used 4th or 5th gears. Just compared in the GPLRA you shifted 16x vs me 12x per lap and used much higher revvs. I had my gears as long as possible and never used 1st I have thought about working on my gear ratios after I found that I run into troubles getting through the race with 173l of fuel. But there was not much time left to work on the setup and I decided to try the pit stop patch instead. In the slow first corner, I even downshifted to first gear to get the car to turn. And I used third gear for the last two corners. Indeed it looks like I revved to high and by that just used too much fuel. Lesson learned for the next time.
