Title: Track editing skills?
Post by: Legzy on June 23, 2010, 10:57:31 PM +0100
Hi Guys, I wonder if anyone has any track editing skills (or is prepared to learn some) & would be happy to take a look at Charade (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3356.msg54521#post_charade) please?
When we ran a test race there at the start of the year, it was very popular but a handful of people thought that it was too lenient with cut track warnings to be used in an official series race.

Anybody fancy taking this on?

Some instructions for using AIW editor (That is what Shark used to do the GTR2 original tracks; Monza etc) can now be found on the net again. RSC has managed to get some of their old archive stuff back on line. :)

No time just yet but, I will get back into trying this soon hopefully.

Just don't cut.

Just don't cut.

We tried that. It ended up in a big bun fight about how much of a cut is allowed, how often and who would police it.

It also ended that some people did it deliberately and some did it accidentaly... :whistling:

Editing the track just gets moans the other way cause people think they should be able to cut (because they've tried the original track) and then claim that the game is being too harsh. We still get the same people cutting the chicanes at Imola and keep getting stop and gos and even after their 4th in a row, they still won't change their line. Go figure.

You can't win so my advice is save yourself a load of work and then hassle and just accept the tracks as they are, let people cut wherever the track lets them already and if you want to go as fast you'll have to do follow the same lines as everyone else.

Or simply don't use tracks were cutting could be an issue. Our persistance with tracks like Imola and Hock baffles me. There are plenty of problem free tracks to choose from :)

But if the tracks are persistently used because they are favourites, could cuts be turned off altogether?

You could go back to the original circuits. Turning black flags off on the server can be done I think (but would need to check), but I also believe it will disable all naughties, like jump starts, simply going straight over at a chicane and saving 5 seconds, driving the wrong way etc.

I thought the rules of motor racing are '2 wheels inside the white lines at all times'. :P

The UKGTR cutting on tracks like Monza have taught me to drive the tracks properly IMO and it adds an extra level of strategy in endurance races. I am sure that it has also helped me to become more precise and consistent. It also forces good sporting conduct I would say. ;D

If you watch the Huttu replays from the teamredline site, you will see that he drives the original circuits as if they have our edited cut warnings.

Maybe we should just be sporting about this and make a gentleman's agreement to not cut. :euro:
