No Tony, no avatar for Zui here....
Hectic night on Wednesday, hectic everything at the mo!
Race 1 I chose the Hillman despite doing no real practise in it. Used the same setup as at Winton, but had to change the gears a touch to make it work. Not sure it was quite as good as it was at Winton, but still felt quite grippy. Was still finding my feet a little in quali, so only managed 5th in a car that felt like there was more pace to unlock. So it proved in the race, as I took a number of laps of gaining places with others errors mainly, to drag myself to 2nd. Now had the measure of it mostly, and was gaining nicely on Erling with plenty of laps left, but ran wide at the final turn just as I was getting in proper sight of him, so ran out of laps. Good pace from Erling ensured the gap remained enough for him despite my best efforts. 2nd felt like a decent result given the total lack of speed on the straight though.....
Race 2 was eventful. Battle with Geoff to begin, but the Mazda just had pace to burn compared to my Cortina. Then it was Erling, Geoffers and myself, all three of us catching up with Clive. Geoff found a way to make a break, I just couldn't get ahead and was passed on the straight a number of times if I did by both Erling and Clive, right up to the point where Erling buggered off a bit and left me trying to find a way past Clive by myself. Eventually he ran just wide enough at turn 1, and I was off after Erling. Caught him, but then spent pretty much the whole of the second half of the race trying to get a way through, but to no avail, the Mazda just blew by on the straight in a big way! Great battle though with all the guys, very fair all round.
Race 3, in the Mazda now....I had a good start, but Matt had a belter and was in the lead. Myself and Geoff were involved in some heavy petting at the chicane, watching the replay I may have touched him slightly inappropriately as the car released from the kerb, which might have had a hand in the car getting sideways and both of us exiting stage left. If the bump was the root cause, my apologies Geoff, didn't even know it had happened, juts thought it had gone around on you on the cold tires and dragged me with you.....Got back on with only Geoff behind me, but it was my turn in the Mazda now, so was able to use the hidden nitrous that everyone else had been using on the straight to drag myself up the field. Took my time when I caught up with the front 3 due to having that speed advantage, and then sat behind Matt in second looking for a way past his very wide, and very on the button at the apex, Mazda. No speed advantage now, so had to work an opening with some tow, and made it through with a couple of laps to go. Good defensive driving Matt, enjoyed the tussle.
All good fun, very eventful 3 races indeed.
Cheers to all.
