It would appear to me that UKGPL needs a constant feed of newcomers so that all this knowledge is constantly being refreshed in the minds of the clever folk who know stuff!

Keep up the good work Matt.

I had good hopes of a nice race with Connaught after the second place of last year, but after a good start passing Jon at T1 I had to take evasive action on the inside grass for Dimi's early braking at T2 and lost the place to Jon. At Surtees again Dimi caused heart attack to Clive, Jon and me that managed to not hit each others and in the lucky manouvre inside I passed Jon. At braking for T1 L2 I was following Clive that had a little momentum on braking, maybe for Dimi  Grin, so I had to swerve to inside grass to not risk a rear-end forgotting that the poles were of solid stone and ripped off two wheels rebounding my car to the outside where luckily anyone was involved in my crash.
Second time in a row following Clive, but this time ended in tears. Maybe I have to put a banner on my screen with "Take care of Clive" written in cubital font  Grin

Sorry Fulvio, Dimi's opening lap was a bit tentative and after a couple of near misses I wasn't sure when he would next jump on the anchors.

As I said in the chat after the race, I have never been so proud of a 6th place!  The pace was very hot and well done to Evil for taking the fight to the aliens. But he has always been a bit of a Brands expert.

I subjected Yannick's laps to the analyser after the event and found that I'm doing it all wrong.  I was too high geared and in the wrong gear for most corners.

Congratulations to Yannick, Hristo, Leo, Evil and Dimi.  I'll see if Gaizka wants to come and play, then I can look forward to being 7th!

With all of the addon tracks that we use I would be surprised if anyone except Doni could escape penalties, since the corner cutting limits tend to be all over the place.
With the current rule of two wheels on the tarmac we know where we stand. Rest assured that if the cars in front of me are regularly cutting corners then you are going to hear about it!  Grin

2 wheels within the white lines at all times  Wink

I don't think there is anywhere on this track where all 4 wheels on the grass would be advantageous. Riding the kerbs is tricky in these cars, so all 4 wheels within the white lines is a good place to be.

Hmm....
I feel that consideration of what is advantageous is a bit of a red herring and will at some point make life absolute hell for the moderators.
We have a rule.

Before wasting hours of practice on this I could really do with knowing if I still have to keep two wheels on the tarmac or can I go where I like and try to miss those objects that have been modelled as solid?

We have all done that one Matt.

Hard luck.

I'm hoping that, when the day dawns that Windows7 will no longer cut it, this lot has been made into a simple to follow "installer" that does not require a degree in computer science and a side order of gobbledegook.

Much like Phil, I have looked at my own laps and life is too short to bother doing anything else.

We drive to the regulation not the analyser's statistics.

As Phil has said "Anyway, if we all drive to the same UKGPL definition, there cannot be an unfair advantage. As to whether it is realistic or not, I'm pretty sure the drivers in 1955 would have used a bit of grass if they could."

I'm sure that he is correct with regard to hanging a wheel over the grass, so long as it was dry.  The rule that we have removes the need to pontificate over whether any advantage has been gained.  Sporadic excursions onto the grass are of no great importance as we all make mistakes but repeated deliberate short cuts should not be allowed.

If we have a rule then we either adhere to it or scrub it.

When racing in the UKPnG league I protested that cars in front of me were taking a line that took all four wheels off the tarmac and I seem to recall that it was upheld but I can't remember what was done about it.

I'm withdrawing from this GP55 series in protest over the rampant corner cutting as witnessed in yesterday's race at Assen.  The stats speak for themselves...

ON TRACK LAPS

Driver                           Laps/Total    Percent
 Doni55                             (12/13)      92.31
Clive Loynes55                       (7/14)      50.00
Fulvio Policardi-55                  (5/14)      35.71
Phil Thornton55                      (5/14)      35.71
Alain Maurice                        (4/14)      28.57
Leo Menegucci                         (4/5)      80.00
Syd Drake55                           (3/7)      42.86
J. Jonny'O                           (2/14)      14.29
enrique farina                       (1/14)       7.14
E vil55                              (1/14)       7.14
Dimitar Dulichki55                    (0/5)       0.00
Hristo Itchov55                      (0/14)       0.00

I endeavour to drive as cleanly and safely as possible in this mod as even a minor shunt in these cars back in the day could have the most dire consequences.  I scored one '64'...off-track lap...when I briefly lost concentration coming off De Vennen.  It neither cost nor gained me time.  What I witnessed from most everyone...and especially several individuals...leaves me cold and filled with disgust.  I reviewed the first five laps of this race noting each and every competitor.  The efforts of some to shave off lap time by putting four wheels in the grass through the serpentine starting at Madijk is simply appalling.  And this isn't the only venue where this kind of thing occurs.  Aintree and Panorama come to mind.

This conduct is an indication of the sense of fair play.  It would appear that few have any notion of it.

Steady on Doni, you will be abandoning the other Blue Moose.

I agree that repeatedly putting four wheels off the tarmac is not on and I have protested this issue myself before now.  Which is the correct course of action.
I personally tried to always keep two wheels on the tarmac and apart from being punted off on lap one I thought that I had done.  Perhaps the corner limits are a bit tight at this one?  Certainly the track has to be driven with the inside wheels on the grass at quite a few points and the dirty line goes onto the grass at a few points.  But it should still only be two wheels.

I shall look at my replay to see if I have been in error.

EDIT:  I have watched my replay and found that I have transgressed on three ocassions, each at a different corner and all as the result of a misjudgement, on my part, of the amount of "slide" that I was going to get.  I have not included my two off track excursions which were of no benefit to me whatsoever.  I don't think that my actions represent a deliberate flouting of the regulation.  I think that my figure should read 9/14 so some of the corner cutting limits might be wrong.

As for the tap from Fulvio, which must have accounted for one of my transgressions, no problem, these things happen.  I think that I owed you one.   yes
I don't recall having a problem but I was keen not to hit the cars in front and I find the Vanwall mirrors worse than useless, so I was not wanting to run wide in case that there might be someone there.

yeah a final push to try and debug it tonight, fingers crossed

Re installing the track would be my first step.

Perhaps redownloading and reinstalling.

Phil, since my 55mod installation is still crashing my system every time, I'd like to remove my allocated slot to free it up for anyone who was late to register, but would like to compete.

Is it at all tracks or just Assen?
If it's just Assen do other mods have the same problem?
45  UKGPL / UKGPL Announcements / Re: UKGPL Season 44 - 1955 GP (Works) - Registration on: January 19, 2024, 10:48:59 PM +0000
Welcome back H.

Good to see you.

Hey Clive, good to see you too! I did some laps with the 250F and played with its setup too. Very tricky to be consistent! I expect to be really bad at this, as I just can't be sure at which moment the brakes are going to disappear, plus the rears tend to overheat a lot if I try to compensate too much with sliding around and using the throttle in a rally style kind of way. And that's at Assen, which seems to give plenty of time for the brakes to cool down. I suspect it's just going to get worse on other tracks...

Hi Hristo, I doubt that it will take you long to master it.  I would say that Assen requires quite a lot of brake management.  The other extreme is Spa, where you can ignore the brake status unless you are following someone who keeps making you dab the brakes to save from hitting him.

I usually think that if the brake indicator is yellow then I have one more stab at the brakes to go before I'm rolling free.
