I will be missing this race and all the rest of the fun through next week.

I am on a business trip up North to Barnsley for a week from Friday onwards. Not sure if we have any GPL'ers in that area who might fancy a pint and banter one evening?

Attention all non-UK drivers: time change in the UK happens overnight (clocks go forward 1 hour), so action gets going an hour earlier than previous.

Sorry for the silly Q but what is the process to change the car appearance to the low wing versions?  Piero, you seem to have managed this.

Bob.

Where a choice of car appearance is available it can be found in the GPL Game Player info screen. A "Graphics" drop down menu will be available where you can make your choice. Further hint look for First name, Last name, Country, Helmet, Graphics is the next one beneath Helmet.

Hope it helps.

Further to what Ronnie said: you have to pick your graphics in an offline session prior to starting the race. Then when you start GPL (through iGOR or GEM+), your car will have the wing setting (high/mid/low/none) you chose. BUT... you have to start the race with the car and driver you picked the graphics for; if you change the car, the graphics will reset to the default (high wing).

Not a bad race for me.  I'm starting to get better with the RFB but I'm still making unforced errors especially in the company of other cars.  Had a bit of a bump with Doni.  Sorry about that, there is some warp on my replay so I'll submit a report.  Great race with Dave Curtis until I made a mistake and he passed me and dissapeared into the distance.  I tried to hold David Rainier off but I made another unforced error and lost the place :(

Grats to the podium, some very very fast times out there tonight!

Still can't get any decent temperature into the tyres, they're hovering anywhere between 180 and 190f, so stay blue all the time. Patch temps sometimes go green but rarely, as a consequence I can't really push it enough.

Can I drop down to Heavies? *pitiful*

So after several mistakes, dropping me back down to 11th, a lapse of concentration put me over at Club, at which point I quit. Struggling to enjoy it but want to cure the tyre problem so I can actually push the cars somewhat. Is there a particular style to driving these cars? I can't throw them into the corners like the 67s and struggle with braking / power sliding too.

Oh, who was it whose engine/clutch did a Rubens at the start? Not something I could easily avoid...

That race was hectic. Got caught up with the shenanigans of the start and flipped my car. A shift r and stop & go later I was right at the back of the field. Slowly managed to carve my way up through the pack. Had a great battle with Bob that lasted for a few laps only for me to clout him off the circuit at Copse  :-\. Sorry about that Bob, I need to view the server replay as I thought I had more than 50% overlap, but at least you managed to get going again.

Ended up finished 7th at the end of it all, which isn't such a bad effort after being last at the end of the first lap. Congrats to all finishers  :)

I hit 201F on the LF tire a few times in the race. My tires in the 69X spend over 90% of the time in the deep blue color.

From srmz:

Each mod has different optimum tyre pressures and temperatures. From what Lee has told me they are:

'67--261 F, 24 psi ft, 26 rear
'65--187 F, 24, 26
'69--261 F, 24, 26
'Sports Cars--261 F, 32, 32. P910--261 F, 28, 28

The '66 mod tires all use an optimum pressure of 26 psi and 207 degrees F.

The '69 and '69 Extra tires use the same optimum pressure and temps.

I'll have to check on the new F2 mod but I seem to remember it was the same as the 66 mod.

Mine Jethro >:(. Engine blew on the flag drop! In pole position as well... cue start melee :'(! These cars... they're basically drifting machines. The grip goes on forever... See Ronnie Peterson drifting the Lotus 72 in the 1973 British GP. I think that style works best with 69x/69. Usually 24-26 psi is perfect, maybe 26 for the mods, more 24 in the originals, GT a bit more with it's wide slip angle to get around the brake bug, maybe more for Can-Am as well.

So, after that mishap, my race was a recovery drive... shift-r left me mounting a car, did the stop go, got caught out behind Dave R and tagged the wall avoiding... cue shopping trolley handling from the right front! The car was basically then a 67 Eagle/Lotus with wings.. understeer, before snap oversteer.. this caught me out once when battling Piero. We had a long duel, eventually I got away when I was in front and had a moment on the grass/recovered on track and Piero had to avoid. But for that and the early spin.. I might have been hounding Dean pretty hard at the flag  :P

One word describes my race

PATHETIC

I was being lapped from around lap 7ish . Even before the inevitable lappery began it was like dodging bullets with cars recovering from the lap1 melee passing me at warp speeds .

Blew the mill attempting to increase my pace , then soon after my S&G chucked it into the earth bank . so early bath time

Can't get the hang of these cars , no idea whatsoever how to set them up and no reference set ups available to crib off .

It wasn't just my tyres that were Blue  ::)

Not a good race for me : contact with Bernie at the start, contact with Phil on lap 4, engine trouble later so shift-R + S'n'G.

Some words from the tail-end.

Was surprised to find that apparently I've not been to Silverstone in a 69x before.  I was checking just before qually to see what my previous best time/chassis was;  not data available.  Not a real problem as the corners are in the same place as for 65/67;  just d/l a setup & that mostly seemed to do ok for me.

Apologies to Axel & Sam during the qually session though;   I was tying to keep it fairly tidy; but as you are all too aware; ran wide onto the grass & resulting spin across the track. Did not intend to do that.

For the race; being at the back  just meant that by the time I got to the wall of cars at the start-line;  it was even bigger!
Still, looks as though I was able to snow-plough a clear route through for Phil...

Wasn't hampered as much as others though,  but as mentioned elsewhere;  being a bit out of position meant faster cars/drivers coming past at warp speeds to regain rightful positions.

Seemed to spend most of the event following Phil; spinning off & waiting for a mini-stream of orange cars to pass by;  creeping up to Phil;  trying to allow faster cars to lap; creeping up to Phil; another spin; more orange cars;  more lapping cars;  up to Phil again.

Although I could get back up to Mr T & just about hang on,  was not then faster/able to do anything about it.  I thought he'd never make a worthwhile mistake;  but eventually there it was.  Unlucky Phil,  although thank you :)

There was a rather fun moment when we both caught Bernie although it all worked out a bit closer than expected.

I consider it a privilege to have been on the same track at the more accomplished drivers.  I tried to keep out of the way at key moments.

Cheers all, see you next time out.
Dave.

Maybe so but it was a lot better than some other drivers including you

From my point of view (but maybe it is biased :) ), my start was perfect
I started from the end of the grid with only one car behind (...yours), I saw several cars in the middle of the road, I slowed down and went on the grass to avoid broken cars ...until I had a contact with a slaloming cars coming from behind  (was it you ? I cannot believe it  :o    )

Moderator will decide.

Interesting info on tyre temps....no really.  My tyres are almost always dark blue too and only when really sideways did my left rear go light blue, so you're not alone Jethro.  I watched for a bit after crashing and saw some pretty drifty but obviously fast styles, so I think I need to try a few things.
I qualified well but raced poor.  Iestyn's start line issue gave me summat to think about but luckily I managed to avoid and got going alongside Ray.  We seemed to have similar pace at the start but I couldn't pass and after a few laps his engine went, another interesting moment but no bloodshed.  A few laps later I binned it and ripped a wheel off.  Had to wait to SH+R then S&G before starting again pretty much last.  I passed a few cars fairly easily and another obligingly spun and I got by.  However, this turned out to be Sam and he caught back up and re-passed me.  We had a battle for a few laps neither being able to get away (think I was running more wing) until we collided at T1.  I probably should've given you room but see that there was little overlap at turn-in (on my rpy at least).  No worries though, it was an otherwise clean fight.

In the end I spun and rolled it, curtains.

Cracking Moto GP mind.

Cheers,

Bob.

Congrats Tim, Andreas, and Dean! Looks like it was very good race for the win.

My apologies Arf for the bump at the start. :( I almost got the car stopped. I thought I was rear ended forcing such a violent collision but it appears I wasn't. In my replay, you drive away a little later without front wheels, the engine on fire, and trailing smoke. What chaos!

I didn't have much of a car for racing much with anybody. Arf and I stayed a few seconds apart most of the race. I pushed as hard as I could for long periods trying to get into Arf's slipstream but never could really do it.

I hope I didn't have any effect on the top 2 near the end of the race. I had passed a stationary Arf at Copse. I thought he had spun. I didn't realize he had to engine trouble and had to do a stop and go. I thought he was not far behind me when the leaders approached to lap me. I tried to wait as long as possible before I let the leaders by me.

Jethro, I've got some decent times on some tracks in the 69Xs and my tire temps rarely reach 200F. I've been setting the car to have fairly even temps across the tire and 24 psi after a few to several laps. The only time I ever know what my temps are while driving is when they occasionally go light blue. Then I can actually read the numbers while driving. :)

Of my four favorite mods (67, 71CA, 67GT, and 69X), the 69X took the longest time for me to be able to get the car setup decent. I still feel I've got a lot to learn with this mod compared to the others. You may be the same Jethro. It's just going to take time and practice.

All the mods but the GTs now, I try to get uniform temps across the tire or maybe a little hotter in the middle. I haven't really tested much of the info I posted earlier. On the 67s I don't follow those guidelines. I like 24 or 25 psi on the rear tires. I feel I'm losing grip at 26 psi. Axel enlightened me to the 32psi or 28psi for the Porsche in the GT mod. I had been running even temps which resulted in about 26-27 psi. Some tracks I was getting incredibly lousy tire performance. I dropped 2 seconds off my Hockenheim time once I started using the correct pressure. I drove the GT mod for more than 3 years with the wrong tire pressure.

Take care guys.

...

Yeah, it was a real good race with Tim! Had a good start and wonder why lestyn was not around. So I opened a gap to something like 5 seconds. Still was wondering what happened to lestyn and had a spin.  ??? So Tim was at my back and the fun begun.  :) From there on it was a good battle with some lead changes until the end!
Congratulations to all finishers!

Btw.: Who ever had the idea of driving only every car for once, thats a really good idea. I really like.  8)

Agreed - fantastic race with Andreas. We managed to stay on each others gearboxes for over half the race while still making space where required, lots of fun  ;D

I really love how the different setup approaches can lead to two cars having near-identical laps but massively differing strong spots around the circuit. Andreas clearly had speed on his side but my Fez stuck to the road like glue - esp through the fast turns like Woodcote.

Bernie/Jethro, I can email you my setup for Silverstone if you like - just PM me your emails :)
To be honest on the Papy tracks I think the defaults are pretty damn close to the setups I'd end up with. Sundays setup only involved some minor pressure and camber changes - plus the normal alterations to steering ratio, brake balence and fuel. I didn't even touch the gearing or diff for the race (Well, I did change the diff - but ended up returning it to the stock setting towards the end of practice as it made the car looser and more to my preference)

I spent an hour or so pre race practice in Matra  fine tuning to what I thought was OK ,  comes time to race and wondered what happened to my setup  ???

then realised I joined the race with the wrong car , completely forgot there was more than 1 Matra chassis ! Dohh ! too late to change back so I spent practice trying to fix things didnt even get a qually lap in

would love to try your set up not sure how to send PM's though ?

One thing I did notice recently when taking the McLaren M7 to Watkins Glen was that the default setup was a Steve Cloyd set, which I think is also the case in the 66 mod. Perhaps that's why you can't get the tyres up to temp? Also, I just use 69 setups as the only difference in 69x seems to be that the grip was reduced a little, so everything else is the same as 69 (setup wise).

Yeah, talk about a steep learning curve! For my part... engine blow was strange, but can happen occasionally, it's the first time you light it up to full power to get off the grid. Same happened to Greg in a Friday race the next week.

Tried to bash Esc-enter straight away but botched it... then I realised that there was a shift-r so thought I can wait until everyone passes and then continue. But there was a huge pile up and when I finally could shift-r my front landed on another car! If I was thinking quickly I could have stop-go'd straight away from the layout but I did it at the end of Lap 1 instead.

Considering a start crash at Montjuich is almost an odds on favourite.. is it time to make a longer grid? Perhaps just for 69x... I usually recommend the ukgpl 1x1 loose grids as a backup for Doni's at oAo. F1Legends and JonnyO in clandestines/GPLbrasil use longer grids.

I've copied Ronnie's question from the Montjuich thread over to here as I feel this is the better place to address it:

...does anyone know what the etiquette is for the side of the grid left behind a stricken car, just in case it happens again

From the mod report, I'd say neither you nor anyone else (in the front half of the grid) did anything really wrong (there were two further back that should have been more careful with their rejoins after avoiding the melee or getting bumped, but that's been covered). A bit more care on your part or Piero's, or an offset in the grid (so cars are not directly behind the one in front), might have helped here. There's some room at Silverstone to widen the car placements, but then that puts wheels closer to the grass (or pit barrier) so anyone getting sideways on launch has less room to recover, bringing other dangers into play.

I'd say you did the right thing, trying to avoid the non-moving car ahead while doing your best not to interfere with the other lane.

Anyone else have thoughts/comments/suggestions?

The drivers have to make a split second decision on which way to go to avoid the car in front. It might be wise to plan ahead just in case something like this happens again.

At Silverstone, the drivers on the left can take to the grass, and the drivers on the right can try to go down pit lane.

At Monaco, maybe follow Clive's advice to wait for the car in front to move first.
