Still on vacation - so unfortunately I have to miss this one too. A real shame because this is my hometrack

And I will be in the Lake District, so looks like a thin grid for this one!

Quite surprised but tyre wear doesn't seem to be the issue I was expecting in the Ferrari. Not had a clean lap yet and 9:20.14 probably means I'm not trying hard enough. Unsure of the best gearing here. Torn between hitting the limit at the end of the long straight or leaving some in reserve in case I get the opportunity of a tow.

Have done a 9:17.8 lap in the Ferrari earlier. Reasonably clean lap, apart from a minor off and a bit too much drifting in places. Can't recall how I set the gearing, but probably so it just about maxed out down the long straight, as that's what I would normally do. Cheers, Erling

Did a few laps to test the available cars ( the circuit is the GPL version so I know that quite well ) and I experienced the same issues as John and a very similar lap time. Although I was more concerned with how the car handled rather than outright pace. The 9:20 lap time did raise a smile here as I am more used to seeing times around 8:00 or below in GPL races in the 67 GP cars. Are they really 1:20 faster per lap?? no wonder the Nordschleife is such a challenge in GPL!! Anyway, in GPL there is no rev limiter, just a known safe maximum and if you push the engine over that limit it will cause damage on each occasion, eventually causing it to explode. So, am still wary of running the engines in GTL at max revs, even though ( as I understand things ) there is a rev limiter to prevent damage. I usually find my setups are running at 95% max revs at the end of the longest straights with a little in hand to exploit any slipstream opportunities. In turn, that means I sometimes suffer accelerating out of corners as other cars have lower ratios ( that was evident at Riverside against Erlings lower geared Chapp ). Unfortunately, the setup parameters for the Ferrari only allow the adjustment of the final drive ratio, so it is a toss up between nice low punchy gears through all of the twisty stuff, or a nice long 5th gear to extract max speed down the long straight?? Why is simracing so complicated ?? or maybe that is why it is so addictive

There's a rev limiter yes, but you can still damage the engine in some cars, as I know you have experienced (BMW Procars for example). On some cars you can raise the limit, which may lead to damage, on others, just revving to the fixed max, causes damage. Whether you can ignore it or not, depends on how quickly it builds, and how high your engine health was when you started. In some of my setups and my driving, I know I damage the engine, but if it can last the race, I ignore it. I do believe some have ruined engines by premature downshifts too, but am uncertain how serious the damage you sustain might be. Cheers, Erling

Thanks for explaining that Erling. I had actually noticed that the engine health suffers by a few % if I downshift too early and over rev the engine. Generally I finish a race with engine health still in the 90's, except for the Procars and those horrid screaming Capris which seem to drop into the low 80's during a "normal" race. Any real abuse of the engine in those cars certainly shows and I have seem values as low as 40% at the end of a race where I was taking liberties I did try the "increase revs" option with the 2G Chapp at Riverside, but it did not appear to give me any noticeable advantage....unless everyone else did the same lol!! Maybe because I was still only using 95% of the available revs I was not doing any real damage?

Did a few laps in The Big Beastie Cobra, just because it was there, and I was curious about how it ( and I ) would cope with Nurby. I was easily 10 secs a lap faster than the Ferrari ?? Had quite a conservative setup, so I would predict that the tyres would comfortably last for 5 laps based on my run of 2 laps. The only downside was that it felt like steering a boat with a teaspoon!!!
