Title: UKGPL Season 39 (Autumn 2021) 1967 F1 (Privateers) - Zandvoort - Sep 5
Post by: Phil Thornton on August 30, 2021, 11:54:49 PM +0100
Season 39 – 1967 F1 (Privateers) – Round 1 – Zandvoort

The first race on the new permanent Zandvoort circuit was on 7 August 1948. Soon more races followed on the course, with the first official Formula 1 Grand Prix becoming a milestone in 1952. The 1955 Dutch Grand Prix was held at Zandvoort on June 19, 1955. It was race 5 of 7 in the 1955 World Championship. The 100-lap race was won by Mercedes driver Juan Manuel Fangio after he started from pole position. His teammate Stirling Moss finished second and Maserati driver Luigi Musso came in third. Racing continued up until the mid-eighties, heroes like Alberto Ascari, Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss, Graham Hill, Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, James Hunt, Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost braved the challenging course in the Dutch dunes and won at Zandvoort. After the Grand Prix of 1985, the Formula 1 left Zandvoort, but the seaside resort and its impressive race track were not forgotten. Many years after the last Grand Prix, the ‘racing drivers of the day’ still talk about their experience on the race track where the challenging corners ‘separated the men from the boys’.

Shame..

I was enjoying that. I was at the back but made a fair start.
nice to see no 1st corner or first lap dramas . seemed good from where i was.
Had some great laps dicing with Albert and I think it may have been Francesco in the Ferrari. between the three of us we where having some great racing.

sadly, I had got a bit of a tow chasing the Ferrairi along the main straight and moved inside to make i sure I didnt make contact from behind, but i had misjudged just how fast iwas going ..... and more so how fast i was running out of track... !!!

I went straight on and ended up in the catch fencing.. DOH!  I hope i didnt cause to much trouble. my apologies.

I could see other cars that kept on coming towards me in Pribluda, so rather than do a stupid rejoin decided to leave .. shame it was great while it lasted.

Paul.

Great start! I kept a regular pace and no errors alowed me to reach first position, with the help of some problems from the guys in front. Fair and solid race from Dulima

Well, I don't know how to say this without making myself look even more stupid than usual. I had the qualifying start listed in my calendar at 2045 --- with an alarm, of course --- but the time zone was off a bit (I was using Eastern Daylight Time in the U.S. instead of UK time). I've had problems with this kind of thing in the past, but this is the first time I can't find anyone else to blame. Oddly enough, when the race started a couple of hours ago, I was doing some training laps at Assen for the first time in six years. Sigh.

A return to 1967 after some years away.  A high standard of driving on display, with which to fail or prevail.  Tyre temp. peril's of foremost ( and rearmost ) importance, as is the nature of these beasts.  It was just like old times!

Squeeked into a good starting position, and steady progress thereafter made, being  disturbed only by a fierce Ferrari being, which swept by from down the grid.  Attempt's to claw back past being thwarted by an Italian powerplant.  I was stronger when cornered.

During our struggle, a green thing crept up from behind.  If I was to win, I'd need some first aid.

A chance sprung forth - with a car being lapped on the main straght.  It spun around to block the Ferrari's path.  Helicopter needed to get me past !  I skillfully bounded off the spinner's wheels, and girated skyward, in the only equipment provided.  Abandoned flight when reailizing steering was lost, with progress thereafter haphazard.  Rough landing and immediate victim to both red, and green machine's due to Helicopteritis. Robust chassis, poor aerodynamics.

I held my station and other parts, whilst nursing tyres and machinery to the finish line.  More than satisfied to have survived. :D

Ciao Paul,
it was me!
I enjoyed it a lot as well... until it lasted
I must practice a lot, I was at least 3 seconds slower from my laptime record of 2012...
See you all in Assen on Sunday
Cheers
