Title: GTL '65 Fun Race
Post by: Aagramn on December 05, 2005, 10:03:45 PM +0000
ALL FORUM MEMBERS WELCOME

Date: Friday 9th December

Practice: 8:15pm (25 mins)
Qual: 8:40pm (20 mins)
1st Race: 9:00pm (12 laps) - STANDING START
2nd Race: ~9:30pm - RANDOM GRID

Track: Hockenheim Short
Race Time Of Day Setting:: 16:00

Allowed cars:
Alfa Romeo GTA
Austin Healey 3000
Jaguar E-Type
Lotus Cortina
Lotus Elite
Mercedes 300SL
Mini Cooper S
Renault Alpine A110
Shelby GT350

I've tried to pick a mix of cars I think will be fairly competitive with each other around this twisty track, hopefully I haven't got it too badly wrong.  ;) It would be great if we could get at one of each on track, we might learn a bit about their relative performance.

12 laps around Hockenheim Short doesn't make for a very long race, so I suggest a 2nd race with a random grid afterwards, with a short practise session in-between to let people change cars if they want to.

I may not be able to make it on Friday. If I can't, I'll start the server early with a very long practise session. You'll have to manually vote to move to qualifying. Please try to stick roughly to the times above (8:40 qual), so as many people as possible have a chance to join.

Do you have a base setup for the Cobra Sponsored, I was having loads of trouble with it when I tried, so I went back to other big lard arse American cars :-)

I have a feeling that there may be a little Alpine there  ;D or even an Elite  ::)

Yep, I'll try and make it, and give the GT350 a whirl for some arse-out fun, and then relegate myself to a mini once I've made myself one with a wall....

Looking at the car balance, a normal mustang is probably slightly quicker than a Mini, so the Shelby version is way faster.

Fozz, for what its worth I'll put my base cobra setup on line. But I don't think there is anyway to "dial out" its idiosyncrasies. To help me I always use highest end gearing, even if its not needed, when learning tracks to make it a bit more stable under braking. Later, use lower gearing to make it more skittish and fun. Please can we have a fun race with it soon ;D.

...Not when I'm driving it ;D

I don't think it'll be an issue on Hockenheim short, the straight sections aren't long enough for the Shelby to pull out a massive advantage (well, not from personal experience).

We'll see. Depends on the track Fozz, Hockenheim short is very twisty and the more powerful cars barely get into 4th gear. It could be a good track for giant killing. ;) It's a bit of an experiment. I looked on GTL Rank and did a bit of test driving before coming up with the list or cars, fingers crossed that none of them are too far off the pace. I'm hoping we'll learn a bit more about the different cars to help us plan the league.

I wonder if a Cobra Vs Corvette race would work? I think the Cobra is a bit quicker, but the Corvette is easier to drive.

Your right about the twists, but its not that twisty, I find the mustang quite grippy once you get the sliding action right, I can keep up with a mini through _a_ corner, the problem is when it snakes around, you can't change direction very fast and the brakes could be a little better, but they aint dire.

I've not driven the Shelby version more than 2 laps, but it seemed better balanced, and faster of course, so I'll be taking that I think :-)

Well I like the driving around thier problems aspect of GTL, its what makes it different. I like the fact you have to change your driving style.

Thanks for your offer, will you stuff it in the folder at the race? I won't be racing the Cobra for that race, but I'll use it at some point.

I made sure there was at least one lard-arsed American car on the list, thought you'd bite.  ;)

Lol yeh, I love 'em. I'm doing the last touring car cup with the standard Mustang, really hard work.

Not going to be able to make tomorrow now (which is a pain, I'm much better at GTL than GTR) - got to take the wife out.

I'll catch the next one though.

Wont be able to make it .... US time... I'm off 6:00pm here .

I have been reading about some struggles with the Cobra. I have had the best luck charming the snake with the addition of coast to the diff (40-50%) and I dial in about 13 degrees of wheel lock.... and add springs to both front and rear... about 2 -3 clicks on both.
The springs have made the biggest difference in braking. Still a tough car to drive consistently, but I love the thing.

I am actually gathering parts to build one next year.... check out the Factory Five Racing website.... order the DVD(free) Lots of great footage of in-car and lots of other good gearhead features ( music is weak..but good otherwise).

I've started the server early with a 1h30 min prac session, as I'm going out in a minute. You'll probably have to vote to move to the qual session, please wait until the published time of 8:40 to give everyone a chance to join.

Have a good one.

About 10 of us in the end. Great fun. I took the mini for a change and shagged up a decent position in the first race by spinning and forgetting to depress the clutch with the new manual clutch set-up... doh! Spun from a tap in race two but still placed 4th- the mini rocks around the tight courses! The way they slide left and right and yet you can catch them is brilliant.

Did the mix of cars work fairly well, or were there any people felt had too much of an advantage or disadvantage?

It worked very well Aagramn. No one car had an edge, with the minis loosing out on the straights but making it all back in the corners against the American lumps.
