Absolutely corking way to kick off my return to iRacing. New PB in qually bagged me fourth on the grid behind two of the Leg Ends and Brendan. Good start from all of us, and it was no surprise to see Paul immediately start to gently pull away.

More of a surprise was that not only was Brendan glued to Darren's gearbox, but I was hanging on to the pair of them with very little effort. After a few laps Brendan got enough of a run on Darren to challenge him into turn 1, and I couldn't say no to the chance to try and follow him through. That ended up with Darren and I side by side down into the evil left hander - he was on the inside so I braked early to give him the corner, but unfortunately we just touched (0x Contact) and he lost a place and a few seconds making an amazing save.

I figured it wouldn't be long before he got back into 4th and then caught me, and I planned to offer no resistance, but sadly he went off a few laps later and quit. I hope I didn't give him a puncture or something. Undecided

I thought that after that Brendan would start to eek away, but instead I could see he was taking big risks in places and soon I was being happily towed along by him at qualifying pace. I wasn't at all sure I could pull away if I passed him, but it was very clear that I had a very good car on the brakes; I could brake a good 40-50 yards later into T1, and I planned to simply follow him until the last lap and then spring a little surprise when it was too late to fight back after it.

However, as we started to lap cars, he went very defensive on the run down the main straight, so I threw caution to the wind, outbraked him round the outside into T1, then won the drag race up to the fast left hander and swept into 2nd place. The question was... could I hold it, or would he simply breeze back past?

Turns out it was the wrong question. The real question was... in his desire to wrestle the place back, would the risks he was taking in that fast left hander pay off? The answer... "no"! laugh Looking at the replay it appears that he just touched the grass on the outside and went into a big spin. Shocked

That left me in a very secure 2nd place, so I backed off into the 23s and cruised home, finishing close to Paul that I expected - only about 14 seconds behind. Cool

My only concern with these cars is that is very difficult to overtake without risking it all.

It's a big risk if you can't trust the other car(s), but as long as everyone is aware of what's going on, and are prepared to give each other racing room, the Skippy does produce really excellent racing. thumbup1

TBH, you could have had me at T1 a couple of times I think, you've just got to trust that the guy in front sees it coming, and doesn't do something rash.

The Skippy is a tough car to make overtakes with, more often than not it'll be mistake that lets people by I think, as you really have to have a good run out of a corner to pass under power.

The racing was really good today though, some mental moments mid race with 4 of us nose to tail!!

Good stuff.

Looks like I missed out on a great race.

It's good to read that it went well and everyone seems positive.

Roll on next week.

Mark Ekins, can you let me know what your SRouk forum name is please? Smiley

Yep that'll be me. managed to lap a bit quicker than before which i was pleased about, glad you posted up that setup Dave but was never really happy as the brakes were far too sensitve as I was locking up all the time. After the third spin just after the tight left hander ending up on the inside i didnt want to risk it and thought i'd jump back to the pits. TBH i dont mind being erratic in the public races but with you guys i'm not sure i really want to mess things up.

Maybe I was a little too cautious...but I was trying to force a mistake rather than try an overtake.

I had to set the brake linearity back to 1.0 - I understand why they've changed it to support load cell pedals, but the new default of 1.8 is almost unusable on normal pot pedals as it moves most of the brake action up into the top third of the pedal travel, making it very hard to be progressive.

As for the tight left after the right hand kink, you need to make sure you use the different coloured tarmac patch on the left, as the stuff on the outside has a lot less grip, and you don't want the left wheels on one patch and the right wheels on the other.

I'll give that a try Dave, although I have improved my brake feel by setting the BB to 50.

Good first iR race that Smiley Dreadful start for me and iR makes it a full sweep of sims that I can't do standing starts in (rolling please Wink). Then had bit of quite race with Stuart steadily going away and just about holding a steady gap to various Leg-ends behind. Then Stuart has an off and unluckily just clipped me on his way back. Then, all hell broke loose until end of race, great fun Don Smiley Despite the pressure, brung it home with no offs and never clouted a soul  Smiley The pace of Paul and Dave Shocked doesn't seem so far away now.

Gotta say blue flags in quali is an excellent feature. All seemed smooth as regards lag etc. but I did have some poor spells of fps and will have to fiddle with settings. What has biggest fps hit whilst not losing important detail?

I've imported the results, let me know if there's anything odd in there.

Good to see everyone enjoyed the racing, it really is a totally different experience when you are racing close with people you can trust. As Darren said before the race, I didn't think we'd ever see Hosted races in iRacing but it seems to be living up to expectations so far. I don't think anything weird happened technically, that's the biggest thing as there's not much we can do about it! Cheesy

Re. the overtaking comments. Summit isn't the best track to produce lots of overtaking opportunities.

What has biggest fps hit whilst not losing important detail?

Shadows are a killer in iRacing, try turning off "2 pass" and "more shadows".

Awesome racing with you Guys last night.
Loved the fact that I could trust people out on track not to make any stupid or senseless moves.

I didn't have a great deal of pace (as usual) and had decided beforehand that I'd just try and keep it on and not throw it away like I did last week at LRP.
Had a decent start but gave up one position going into T1.. I spent the next lot of laps following the train of cars in front just giving myself enough of a gap to be able to see clearly into the turns.
I just tried to hold position and keep a slight gap to Pops behind. About the midway point I had one scare as someone span out on the 2nd to last corner and luckily I choose the right way to go and avoided any contact.
Next I got past Adam as he got a slowdown warning out of the last turn. I then slowly closed on SBG and tried to keep him under pressure for the next few laps till the end but he held firm and kept to the racing lines and there was no way past.
Great fun and the best race for me in a long time.
Thanks..
