Title: UKGPL Season 22 (2011-2012) Porsche - Sepang - Dec 9
Post by: Geoff65 on December 04, 2011, 06:30:19 AM +0000
Season 22 - Porsche Super Cup
Race 3 Sepang, Malaysia

First included in the Formula One World Championship in 1999, the current Malaysian Grand Prix is held at the Sepang International Circuit at Sepang, Malaysia. FIA-sanctioned racing in Malaysia has existed since the 1960s. The 1962-1965 seasons of the original Formula 2 Grand Prix held on the Thomson Road circuit in Singapore is regarded as an earlier precedence of the Malaysian Grand Prix, when Singapore was originally part of the Malaysian federation from 1963 to 1965. After Singapore seceded from the federation in 1965, the Grand Prix continued on until 1973.

Between Singapore's departure from the Malaysian federation and the opening of Sepang Circuit, Malaysia hosted a range of other racing tournaments at Shah Alam's own circuit between 1968 to 1995, including the Tasman Series (1968–1972), Formula Pacific (1973–1974, 1978–1982), Formula Atlantic (1975), Formula Two (1977) and Formula Holden (1995). Now we get to take our howling Porsches around the impressive, Hermann Tilke designed venue. This should offer much in the way of close, door-banging racing to whet the appetite.

Please check the Season 22 pages for details (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=335&theme=6) regarding rules and the Porsche Super Cup (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=342&theme=6) pages in particular.

Sepang offers a wide asphalt surface that for most corners are more than one racing line, with two long straights that should prove good passing opportunities. Come to think of it, there are many opportunities to pass at this place. Though I will remind everybody that Turn 1 one is the hairpin at the end of the back straight on this track....so take care after the start. Enjoy!

Pay attention to some reference points and in 4 or 5 laps you will remember about each corner.

I felt the same Joe after my first few laps. There are indeed about 3 places where the sequence of corners is very similar to look at, but different to drive :-\. After my first 10 laps or so I was beginning to recognise the track like Sergio suggests by remembering what buildings or other features were around.

Until you can be sure what lies around the next corner it is impossible to push hard, but this track is quite wide and the Porsche is very forgiving, so you can almost drive this circuit blind and get a reasonable time.

I think perhaps a few pilots could get under 2:10.50 after having seen a couple of ours getting around 2:11.50  :o ::) :P

Anyway a very nice track Sepang but it should be not so simple to overtake when pilots are near their max performances because in driven corners certainly it is not possible to overtake and in the other zones after the 2 main straights, we have to push heavy on brakes with little control left.

Untill now, I've seen lap times going about 8 seconds down since my 1st few laps with Axel !!!  :o

Who will break the 2:10.00 barrier ??? :o :o :o

OK better go for the reserve.  They'll probably score more points than me anyway ::).  Bear in mind I'm classed as an Amateur so I can't be replaced by a Pro driver (only another Amateur or a Novice could step in).

ok , he have been slaughterd by Clive , thatswhy he was in that situation...

Started from the pits, but I was already 1 lap down. So I decided to retire already on 1st lap...lost completely the fun... :(

Perfectly good servers suddenly acting up....or is it the looming end of Capitalism as we know it? The corporate-owned internet certainly seems worse than usual. Personally, my soundcard and video card argued over a DMA call......And I lost, frozen screen and screeching sound.   >:(  Got into the 13's in qually and all.  ;D
We'll investigate dates for a re-run and get back.

The replay is available here (http://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/inc_replaysS22_js.htm). Just select the Porsche Super Cup series and analysis is available if you click on the Archive name.

That analysis is available directly from here (ftp://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/replays/archive/season22/analysis/S22_PSC_R03_Server2_2011_12_09_Sepang/index.html).

I suspect that person is me, as you turned in to me and broke my engine!

You lost control of your car lining up for the last corner on lap 1, and I went past you. Unfortunately you turned back in and hit the back of my car. I think you should have known I was there, given I'd been behind you for the last few corners and so should have been more careful. I know it was your first race, and you need to learn etc, so I don't hold a grudge. But I will be grassing you up to the stewards  ;D

Annoyed as I was to have to drive another (whole) race in a car with no top end grunt after the bump, at the end of the day it has probably only cost me one or two places, given other retirements. I couldn't get to grips with this circuit, and my qualifying PB of 213.8 was so far off the pace of the front of the grid that I had little hope of doing well. Maybe it was this blind pessimism that caused me to fall off the track halfway round the first lap, and put me at the back of the train towards the end of the lap.

...and just to top off the weekend** I've just come back from a 200 mile round trip to Silverstone to stare at an icy track, instead of getting to play with a single seater.......not sure if I should be grateful I wasn't on the other server or not....

** Yes, I know its only Saturday lunchtime, but given my luck so far.........  ::)

Merry Xmas/Bah Humbug everyone.....

Arf

I'm sorry Arf-Arf, you are quite right, I slid wide and tried to recover without realising you would dive for the inside, must be aware of that, especially if a faster driver is catching me.Thank you for your help before the race, and your consideration for my poor driving .I must also go and apologise to Zampedri for a similar accident later, when the situation was reversed.

This is an apology to Zampedri, for the racing accident on lap 5 yesterday on turn 2  :(at Sepang, I turned inside of you but hadn't realised that your line was different to mine, so was on your inside as you took your normal racing line, I hope the resulting crash didn't adversely affect your racing situation unduly.

Mate I symapathise and did apologise. I was stranded round a blind bend. What was I supposed to do wait there and let others coming round hit me where I was !!! My car was still good to go, I thought best to try and move out of the way, I failed and ruined your race, my fault totally and believe me I'm sorry, but it happens. Ditto Clive, I'm sure he never meant to make contact but it happens and I have no hard feelings. Like everyone, I assume, I'm just grateful that we should get a second chance with a rerun sometime.
Sorry again Nicky.

An unfortunate incident Dave, but that is racing and we have all made plenty of errors, especially to begin with.  You qualified well so had good speed.  It is often difficult to scale it back in the race, especially if you are involved in close battles.  I managed to ease back in this race but then I was never really wheel to wheel with anyone and when Roberto retired I decided to 'bring it home' and almost straight away ran off the track!!

My race was quiet for the most part.  Second was all I could hope for...barring accidents/mechanicals.  My set-up was okay but I was wrong to change gearing before the race without trying it  :o which made some corner exits rather steady, my higher gears were too widely spaced.

I managed to stay somewhat in touch with Roberto, but he was faster and would pull away but also made a few mistakes which allowed me to close back up.  After viewing the replay I was definitely watching my revs more than most others, especially Roberto (did your engine let go?) and perhaps this was overly cautious.  I was no match at all for Tom so there was little point in working my car harder.  Congrats again to Tom, a stunning performance lapping consistently fast and even bettering your pole time.

Bob.

I was unable to save a replay of our race for obvious reasons  :-\   It really was a downer, after finally getting into a racing groove on this surprisingly difficult to learn circuit. After some serious swapping of places, orientations and directions in the first few laps I found myself running in a lonely 2nd spot, but I was more than happy with that ::)

It seems I might owe Ronnie an apology?. From your post I am assuming that there was some contact between us? The only bit I can remember where we were close was into T1, when I braked much later than you did and seem to recall getting very close to your rear end just before you "appeared" to lose the back end and I dived through. Now I have a feeling it might have been some warp contact because I was so close...sorry :-\.  Nothing registered on the FF from my end, but that does not make me innocent( well maybe not guilty either ;) )

As for the mass disco, we went through a few races last season where there were similar problems, and there was a great deal of discussion about possible reasons but no definitive answer. Could it be the same mystery problem again?

Hi Ronnie ,

Sorry too , off course no real hard feelings.
Just temporarily displeasure at that moment .

Still my reservation on pro modus  are alive .
As well , looking at these particular situation in T1 , my assessments off risk still is the same :
There is no way to come back to race in a save manner , once stranded back to front at this place and only working way , to reduce the risk for following drivers would have been to use rear gear to get the car out of the turn`s area . but guess GPL wont accept that and would have given an black flag on it . so hit esc button would have been more fast and save …

Well , as to servers quality . looking at my own replay , it seems like collision box wasn’t working proper all over .( lots of warp contact ) .
But this could substantiated in the source of errors non server replays do have .

Hope those new probs on T7_2 could be sorted out .

About connection problems on the server, i suggest use of the old TCP Optimizer: some time ago, i resolved all the problems with this program by let him do it optimization of TCP/IP parameters (it also works on the 7, although it is an old software developed to previous versions of Windows).
