I thought I'd go for the Nick Swift impressions last night by taking the 970 Mini. I'm not the biggest Mini expert, despite loving them to bits and owning one of the new ones, FWD isn't really my forte in GTL to be honest in my own opinion.
Practise was pretty rubbish, kept hitting the barriers at the chicane when on good laps, but did managed to get a good lap done for quali. Trundled past the mayhem on the first lap, settled into a pointless chase of Geoffers in the 1275 that was never going to work, and all was going well until late in the race when I just didn't get it right at Woodcote for some reason and speared off. This was the second off in one lap, and wiped out my lead on Dan, who zipped past. I chased him for the remaining time, and even drew alongside on the run into Woodcote on the final lap, but he has obviously watched Goodwood lots over the years and held the line on the inside perfectly in the braking zone, and then into the chicane, to win our little battle.
Similar for race 2, made a better lap in quali.... but then was nowhere near it in the race for some reason. At about half distance. I was just holding my own against the Cortina of Tony a couple of seconds back, but then suddenly lost the ability to shift down which sent me off at St.Marys. I got the gears back about a lap later, I found that I had not done up the quick release on the steering wheel properly and it was loose, probably been like it for a week....Anyway, this had the benefit of getting me back up to speed, and I managed to virtually repeat my quali lap to pull away again from Dan, thus reversing our fortunes from race 1.
I'll essentially repeat what Clive said, the TC-65ish cars always give the best racing, I have always thought this. Combine that with the popularity of the Goodwood meetings and this always works to give a great event for us online.
My thanks to Tony, the usual spotless organisation. Great pace at the front from the Cortina boys.
