Season 34 – 1955 Grand Prix – Round 9 – Bremgarten
The ninth race in the 1955 Grand Prix series takes us to Bremgarten in Switzerland. Bremgarten is situated to the north of Bern and was built as a motor cycle track in 1931. The circuit itself had no true straight, instead being a collection of high-speed corners. From the outset, it’s tree-lined roads, often poor light conditions and changes in road surface made for what was acknowledged to be a very dangerous circuit, especially in the wet.
The Swiss Grand Prix was held at Bremgarten between 1934 and 1939 and again between 1947 and 1954. In 1950 the Swiss Grand Prix was included in the new Formula One World Championship. The race was won by Italian Nino Farina, who would go on to be the first Formula One world champion. In 1951 Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio dominated in his Alfa after taking advantage of Farina's wrong decision not to make a pit stop to change tyres during changing wet-to-dry conditions. In 1952 newcomer Stirling Moss ran as high as third in his underfunded Alta-powered HWM, but the race was won by Italian Piero Taruffi who scored his first and only F1 victory. In fact this Grand Prix was only championship race (other than the Indianapolis 500) not won that year by Alberto Ascari. In 1953 Ascari had to make a pit stop to fix the misfiring engine in his Ferrari. He left the pits in fourth place and stormed round the circuit, passing Fangio in a Maserati, and his teammates Farina and Mike Hawthorn to take victory. Ascari also won his second Drivers' Championship at that event. In 1954 Fangio (now driving a Mercedes) led from start to finish in rainy weather to take his second Drivers' Championship from countryman José Froilán González. Bremgarten has not hosted an official motorsports event since 1955, when spectator racing sports were banned in Switzerland. Please read the championship specific rules on the championship standings page.

Drivers classed as Amateurs will be allocated an additional 10 tokens. The token allocation will not be managed in SRou this season so (unlike the 67F1 Works and 67F1 Privateer divisions) the tokens available to each driver will not appear in the championship table (when the mouse pointer is hovered over the driver's total). Rather, the available tokens will be published in the race announcement. See table below. I've loaded the chassis the drivers used into the token calculator spreadsheet. For the next race the available tokens will be as declared in the table below (the table will also appear in the next race announcement). The calculated values are automated but selecting the cars is a manual process so please check your tokens to make sure I haven't made a silly error. There was no token overspend for this round so no one is disqualified. Quite an exciting race for me, especially on lap 6 when 4 of us were heading for the second banking. I almost pulled out of Bastian's slipstream but I was trying to work out where Clive was. Luckily I caught a glimpse of a silver mudguard in my mirror and I backed off. It was quite hard slowing the SL down for the parabolica and when dicing with Bastian for second place in the closing stages I missed a gear and without brakes (red light on) and no engine braking I ran wide. Fortunately I had enough of a gap to retain third place but I had no chance of catching Bastian.
Grats to Clive on the win and to Bastian securing second place in the Lancia. Bad luck Cookie and Fran, you both deserved better than that.

Season 34 – 1955 Grand Prix – Round 8 – Monza 10K
The eighth race in the 1955 Grand Prix series takes us to the Cathedral of Speed in Italy. The Autodromo Nazionale Monza is a race track located near the city of Monza, north of Milan. Built in the Royal Villa of Monza park in a woodland setting, the circuit has gone through numerous changes over the years. Perhaps the most striking feature in the park is the steep banked (sopraelevata) curves on the now defunct 10Km variant, first used in 1955. The original circuit (used between 1922 and 1933) also had an oval section but the banked curves were not as wide or as steep as the later 1955 variant. The banked circuit was used on four occasions for Formula 1 races; in 1955, 1956, 1960 and finally in 1961 when it was decided that Formula 1 cars were just too fast to be safe on the oval track. The banked oval section was last used in any capacity in 1969. From 1962 onwards, the Formula 1 Grand Prix was held on the "road circuit" which by the early 1970s was also deemed to be too fast for Formula 1 cars. Two chicanes were introduced for 1972 Italian Grand Prix, one at the Ascari curve and another on the approach to the Curva Grande. Tonight we will relive the dramatic race in 1955 on the full 10Km circuit complete with steep bankings and no chicanes. The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available. Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join. If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left. Please read the championship specific rules on the championship standings page.
