Title: UKGPL Season 23 (2012) Intermediates Trophy (65) - Salzburgring - Jul 24
Post by: BadBlood on July 21, 2012, 10:10:36 PM +0100
The third race of the Intermediates Trophy finds us in Germany where we visit the Sachsenring AND THEN WE QUICKLY MOVE ON TO AUSTRIA AND THE SALZBURGRING!!!  ;D

Some completely irrelevant history of the Sachsenring... The race track was first opened in 1968. Lying in a narrow, alpine valley, it has a rather simple layout, with two long straights plus the sweeping and fast "Fahrerlagerkurve" ("paddock turn") at the bottom of the course, and the narrow "Nockstein-Kehre" at the top. In spite of its simple layout, it garnered a fearsome reputation for the high speeds reached on the straights and the "Fahrerlagerkurve". Aussie 500cc two-wheeler great Wayne Gardner won here in 1987 on his way to Australia's first modern motorcycle racing World Title. This track is fearsomely fast, even in the 65s. Should be fun!.

Can't be bothered to find blurb about the Salzburgring now, look it up for yourselves you lazy lot. Salzburgring on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salzburgring)

The Intermediates will race for 33 laps on this somewhat shorter than the Sachsenring circuit!

In line with the new handicapping system, the series leader and second placed man are handicapped. The others are too distant to require it!

Handicapped Driver(s)Allowed Chassis
RonniepetersonBT7
ClutchBT7 or Cooper

Please check the Season 23 pages for details (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=359&theme=6) regarding rules and the Intermediates Trophy (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=363&theme=6) pages in particular.

Qualifying may start before 9pm, if so, Reserve drivers should leave the server when 35 minutes of qualifying remains and only rejoin when 30 minutes of qualifying is left. This is to ensure that Full Time drivers get priority in joining.

Please restrict chat to pit messages if necessary, and this includes the end of the race, until all running drivers have completed the necessary laps.

The Intermediate Trophy races are run under Int Long rules and all incidents in the Lap 1 red zone will be moderated and reported incidents for the rest of the race, however the moderators reserve the right to review any incident. Drivers are reminded that they are limited to ONE Shift-R. The Red Zone will extend to the Scierie corner which is the 90 degree right hander at the end of the long straight.

Please ensure you are aware of the new in-series penalties for this season. Details are here (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=10879.0). Drivers incurring a penalty will receive a PM informing them of this."

Please submit incident reports within a week after the race so that the moderators report may be out before the next race.

It's the wrong forum to post this question, but it's kind of relevant to me racing I guess.

My old G25 packed up in the last couple of weeks.  I've replaced it with a Thrustmaster T500, and already had the Thrustmaster shifter (but for GPL, used the G25 one).

As the 2 bits of hardware are on different USB connections, I'm finding that GPL doesn't recognise the shifter.

The wheel works fine, but I don't want to race using paddles.  I've seen a GPLshift add-on, which may be what I need (though it doesn't mention T500's), but can't seem to get it to work.

Any pointers/advice gratefully received.

Unfortunately my home ADSL connection is dying and I think the problem will not be solved in time for the race...  :censored:

I'm getting used to it, having had a G25 since the day they were released just about.

The weird development thing is the static paddles (not really sure what they were thinking with that one), although you can get the Ferrari add-on wheel to overcome the paddle issue (at extra cost). But using static paddles for driving just doesn't feel right.

But so far it all seems like a sound product.  Just got to recalibrate my brain a bit to get used to the longer pedal throw, and spring resistance and wheel strength and where buttons are etc. But that will come with a few more miles (It was the same when I got my G25 I recall, in that everything felt a bit weird).

My main issue now is getting the usb connected shifter to be recognised by GPL, cos at the moment, I can't get GPL to 'see it'.

Thanks for the replys guys, I would be getting it for the Ferrari wheel, that's why I'm interested in it. It's a little wrong for GPL, but it looks so cool. Keep us updated as to how you get one.

I might add it to my christmas list, as I've been good so far this year :)

Sorry, going to give tonight a miss, 'cos I still can't get my wheel to sort with a shifter.  I'll get something sorted for next round for sure though.

Hi guys,

I really enjoyed my first online race tonight at Salzburg in the Ferrari. I've just seen the results and I'm chuffed to bits with my podium finish. How do I set my nationality as I have a blank flag at the moment. I need to put the UK's Union Flag in there.

Pete

I think you have to set your country in your driver details in your forum profile Pete. Just click on your own name and it will take you to your profile. Its Driver Details on the left, I think. Just set the desired country from the drop down.

Well done on the podium.

Sorry Gareth... :(

Couldn't really get to grips with this track , I was still learning it after everyone had packed up and left for home .

The race was quite eventful , I made a tardy start then spent the early laps trying to figure a way to get past Norman , I could get the tow down the straight but found it just impossible to make a clean pass  , thought I saw my chance when he wobbled a bit going into turn 1? got a bit sideways and we touched ( maybe some warp as my car became a fire ball) .

Things then got a bit lonely after the stop & go penalty until we met up again once more after they had both decided to wait for me  ;) after that it got a bit hectic , I found myself in front of Hendy's BRM but he was having none of it and wanted the place back , going into the ostschlief I didnt realise Hendy was alongside , couldnt believe how fast he must have come up in the tow and as I turned in we touched ( apologies mate cos I think I did the same move later on just to check it out ) , fortunately we survived and reached status quo with me following Hendy & Norman home .

Altogether an enjoyable race , except for my bad driving that is , hope I didnt spoil yours too much .

Grats to the pods and cyas all soon .

 :)

After what happened in the season's first 2 races I was happy to finish. Spent most of the race in company of Hendy & Bernie. In various combinations of any 2 from 3 we had our bumps & scrapes. Didn't realise Bernie had an S&G so he must have been quick when motoring alone to get back in the race. Honestly I reckon they were both quicker than me in race mode but the way things were  I finished between them. I enjoyed it but it seemed an awfully long race

good race all in all, shame sky crashed we were have a good one. looking forward to spa in bt7 :)

Gareth, I expect the lone BT7 at the next race will be myself again  :'( :'( But fear not another peerless drive like the one last night should see you into Cooper/BT7 territory  ;D ;D

Sky, I'm assuming you quit without taking your one available stop and go? You would have been able to make it and get out still in a safe second spot with a shot at first. Looking at the turn out last night I hope you learn to love the game again soon, hang in there.

Tobodestroyer, great return debut. If you had not decided on making some sandcastles after murdering me down the straight for the umpteemth time, I would never have been able to build a big enough gap to hang onto third which became second when Sky departed.

Grats again to Gareth and Tobodestroyer, commiserations to Sky and well done to everyone who turned up and raced. See you all at Syracuse!

I didnt have any damage and I didnt need no shift'r... And I would have been first if I continued. But I would firstly get penalty, secondly it would be totally unfair for Gareth, who wouldn't be able to catch me after his stop/go (hope you did it, or you'l be disqualified), thirdly I rearended him, and fourthly I have no idea what to do anymore... This is not racing because it ends in tears, what I did at mosport and last races is not racing because im driving around alone for no appareant reason with no incentive for anything, and what is racing, who to hell knows... maybe those who actually have talent for it, I'm obviously not one of them. The penalty system wouldnt work at all at this occasion, Gareth is new, I brought him to ukgpl and he probably wouldn't want to report me, I could report myself, but that option didn't even come tho my mind at that time - and if i do get penalty, who knows if it will be in points, or places, or championsip positions, or race positions, or time, and I got 25 penalty points already, and its very doubtful Gareth would benefit at all from it. So the only fair decision was to quit the race... And it doest sound right... idk...i dont care.

Having re-read the rules, I think you might be right as im 30 points behind, i thouht is was top two. I happy to be wrong. having done a few laps in the bt7 i think second was a awsome drive.
I didn't do a S&G as i didn't shift+R so didn't need to. You gave me the place back, i would not have reported it so I dont know about any penalty. as for not being able to catch you, yeah of course mate :)
Sky, stop feeling sorry for your self and get back on the horse!
Gareth

You're thinking over it too much, Sky. We're all humans, we all make mistakes. As long as you can become aware of what you did wrong, there's no need to do anything else. Punishing yourself for something of the past won't solve it, so just leave it to the league rules and do your thing - drive. Whether someone reports you or not is up to them, not you.

As for what is racing, it has two aspects - racing against others and racing against yourself. Ideally you should have both as motivations. That way even if you race alone, you push your own limits, racing against your own limitations and just trying to improve. Racing's purpose is winning, it's not just to drive around in circles. If you enjoy the activity, you just do it without having to push yourself forcefully.

I got 25 penalty points already

No you haven't. By the time racing resumes in September you will have 1 penalty point (plus any to come ;) ). The 22 points in F2's are simply a points adjustment to square up the table.

Gareth wants a race with you - OK, you made a mistake and Gareth had to reset. Nothing to stop you waiting for him to catch up to resume battle as long as you don't impede anyone else.

Just get on with the racing - it is a game. Let's enjoy it!
