Title: GPL running in Linux mint 20
Post by: Cookie on July 06, 2020, 01:49:26 PM +0100
I just installed the new Linux mint20 on my testing PC.

Takes about 35-40 minutes from the scratch -> empty 240GB SSD + USB Stick with the mint20.iso -> driving a lap at Monza!

just some teaser pics if you want to try it and get rid of constant problems with banana w10  ;D

Under WINE? or native

Wine of course ;)

Super gimmick - GPL running in window- as long in menu - full screen in game!
So you can modify sound devices and NVidia settings being in GPL on the fly !!!

PS
Now I can not get lost when leaving the full 19 driver server to switch on TS ;D

I've had stuff running under wine before and it was so slow it wasn't worth the bother.
does this run at a decent FPS?

Look at the middle Screenshot: it is constant 60fps with i5 4670K and GTX 960 @ 2560x1080

I will add a pic of 19AI grid 69X mod in Spa67 from rear - the ultimate proof

FPS allways shown in the steering center
;)

argh wrong order - so from bottom to top...

Hi Axel

What clock speed are you running your i5 at and what is the MB ?

For GPL any >3200MHz i3 is fine

My i5 4670K is stock at max turbo 3800MHz and heavy undervolted! 1.05VCore

Here are the data of this pc:

Will this gpu be OK for GPL ? to replace my Radion R9 270 2gb

Title: Re: GPL running in Linux mint 20
Post by: Cookie on July 22, 2020, 11:14:06 PM +0100
Yes Bernie it's a good enough GPU, I have one ASUS RX 580 Dual with 4GB ( cost me new ~120€ )

BUT

NVidia has better economics and much better driver for W10 and linux mint20
(apropos of GPL!)
I would look for a NVidia GTX 1060 6GB - I have an ASUS GTX 1060 Strix 6GB in my main racing PC

The Radeon settings for GPL are way more complicated to set in Windoze and they are not constant you allways have to check before driving!
Stupid AMD does give way too high Voltage at stock to this GPU so it gets hot and then throttles down, a well known problem with this Radeon series in Hardware forums!

Hi Axel

Looking at these to upgrade my old comp , what do we think ?

ASRock Intel Z490M PRO4 Micro-ATX Motherboard

Intel Hex Core i5 10600K Comet Lake OEM CPU/Processor

Corsair 16GB DDR4 Vengeance LPX 2666MHz Memory Kit

WD Green 240GB 2.5" SATA 3D NAND SSD/Solid State Drive

I need a suitable cpu cooler to fit my case , any ideas ?

Title: Re: GPL running in Linux mint 20
Post by: Cookie on July 27, 2020, 07:30:49 PM +0100
If you want it to be a dedicated PC for GPL or AC

ASRock Intel Z490M PRO4 Micro-ATX Motherboard - ok
Corsair 16GB DDR4 Vengeance LPX 2666MHz Memory Kit - ok

12x overkill is the  i5 10600K - eats useless 125Watt! -
I would take an
Intel® Core™ i3-10320 Processor 65Watt! up to  4.60 GHz (only 4x overkill ;) )
https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/199280/intel-core-i3-10320-processor-8m-cache-up-to-4-60-ghz.html

for the saved money buy a M2 SSD 500GB (not the 2.5SATA)

Now the cooler can be half size and half noisy!
I would take a
beQuiet pure Rock 150W TDP

PS
or do you need a lower cooler?

Title: Re: GPL running in Linux mint 20
Post by: bernie on July 27, 2020, 09:36:56 PM +0100
Axel

I realise the i5 is somewhat overkill but was also thinking to future proof the system , rather than buy a system that is adequate today but becomes redundant in 2-3 years time , we both know how fast this kit moves on with every new developments . also not to bothered about overclocking or running at turbo clock speeds for now.  GPL is I think more CPU oriented than GFX so the i5 appealed more from that poit of view, thought thinking about it now would be possible to fit the less cost i3 and have the option to upgrade later on the same mb ?

I will heed your advice and have a look at your i3 and give this some thought  ::)

Good that you approve my selection anyway

Thanks again Buddy

Hi Bernie,

I followed Axel's advice some time ago and installed an i3 running at 3.4GHz and have never regretted it.

I had a rock solid 60fps all around Spa on Sunday.

It was the nut behind the wheel that was the problem!

Edit:  and running on Windows7

Title: Re: GPL running in Linux mint 20
Post by: Cookie on July 27, 2020, 10:26:15 PM +0100
Bernie as long as we are talking about GPL optimizing:

IMO 2 cores are enough one for GPL and one for OS.

GPL runs on one core only of a CPU so why have 6-12 cores? Produce heat in winter?

This i3 has 4-8 cores as in former series the i5 had
and the turbo clock is running when you check the "disable intel speed step" but it does it dynamicaly up to 4.6GHz.

If you play such big egoshooting games with complexe worlds generated, an i5 or i7 are the choice.
GPL has its limits - after Spa67 the later longer tracks like IOM are less heavy! so they learned to make it lighter and look better.

Believe me a F1 car to drive to the bakery is not feeling well...

to optimize GPL you need
- a CPU with a good single core strenghth and >3.2GHz
- a good and fast data bus with a fast DDR4 RAM connecting CPU - chipset - GPU
- a fast SSD - as fast as possible -> M2!

and last but not least a rank OS not running 25 gimmick apps in the background,,, LINUX

ps
of course you can update from this i3 to i5 or i7 whenever you wanna load a whole brave new world into your 4-8K Monitor

Axel

Since I dont have to pay the heating bill I went for the i5 + WD Blue 500gb M.2 . So no excuses now for GPL to be maxed out

I also have flight simms and my lady wife plays her online adventure shoot em up game . so perhaps we will benefit from that .

I can always down grade easier than upgrading the system . I just got to screw it all together now and get GPL loaded up again , so if you dont here from me again you will know why .

Looking forward to meeting back on track soon

Wish me luck and a BIG THANKS for your help

To quote Baron von Frankenstien "It Lives" ( or whatever he said when he awakens the monster )  :taz:

Straight out of the box runs GPL55 mod Spa67  with solid 60 fps , tops out at 61.5 fps in places . (in training mode with no AI ) No stress , no noisy fans . delighted with the result so far .

Two problems to sort

No1. I cant get the Lan connection to work , win10 reports a faulty Lan cable but I know its good , the data light is blinking and the frequency light on solid , I think the fault lies somewhere in the BIOS but havn't a clue how to sort it . (just thought , maybe the Status light = orange blinking  . speed light = green solid on = 1Gbps connection ? Not sure but could this be the wrong speed for our system , I don't recall it being so fast as that .
I'm currently running from a PCI Wi Fi card which works fine but not good for GPL if there is lag problems

No2 The SSD card shows in the Bios but not on the disk manager system , I have tried this in 2 different M2 ports. I think it might need formatting , but how to do this ? I D/L a prog called Macrium supposed to enable disk cloning but this couldnt find the SSD
(UPDATE)
OK I managed to Format SSD  ;D

Big head scratching session coming soon  ::) ::) ::)

Post by: Cookie on July 29, 2020, 11:32:03 PM +0100
Bernie,
the M2 should be the system "disk" so you must not format it, just install mint20 on it from an USB stick.

When you have mint20 running, you will soon forget the other OS you have...

Title: Re: GPL running in Linux mint 20
Post by: bernie on July 30, 2020, 09:18:28 AM +0100
Oh Heck ! Its formated now , every help site I went to on the web said to format it before I could clone my system disk to it .  :-\

Title: Re: GPL running in Linux mint 20
Post by: Cookie on July 30, 2020, 09:33:59 AM +0100
If you use clonezilla it does not matter what's on the disk, it will write bit for bit so just overwrites everything.

Use the disk to disk option and later you can expand it to get the full disk space in the OS

So, if I add an SSD to my GPL server pc, which is currently running on a troublesome XP, can I boot up on Mint20 and run the existing GPL install?

Title: Re: GPL running in Linux mint 20
Post by: Cookie on July 30, 2020, 02:07:57 PM +0100
Yes you can.

But why keep this old XP install ? is it on a SSD or HDD?

You can copy the GPL folder into Mint20 and run it from there - it will be way faster loading.
My servers GPL folder has 18,4 GiB with 152 tracks and all mods installed  ;)

I would just plug an SSD in and install Mint20 besides XP, mint will see the old OS and give you some options - you can just test try without installing it and you will see.

I was hoping that I might be able to migrate slowly to Mint.

Title: Re: GPL running in Linux mint 20
Post by: Cookie on July 30, 2020, 10:32:24 PM +0100
Clive the gpl folder can be copied without a new install, only GEMpackage has to be installed in linux/wine for the settings in the registry.

If you won't copy it I dunno if the path is found in wine , as it has its own filesystem - but I have run GPL from an external HDD allready...

Great Bernie,

- have you installed wine? From Mint repositories or winehq.org?
- if you have wine (stable 5.01 ?),  run in terminal "winecfg" - this will add gecko and mono and create a C:/ filesystem
- now you open the "user" folder and with ctrl-h unhide the hidden folders and files
- go to .wine folder  -> C: here you have the system folder where to copy GPL ;)
- copy the GEMPackage_2.5.0.32.exe to c: and run it with wine windows programstarter and let it make C:/ GPLsecrets folder.

IMPORTANT after installing GEM+ delete the gem.ini! It's in /home/bernie/.wine/drive_c/users/Public/Documents/GEM+/ before you run GEM!

Out of mint you have access to all W10 folders and files, so no need to copy any other files to your SSD.
The GPL folder becomes much faster if you place it on it!

Hi Axel
really struggling with this , and after several attempts at finding the correct wine d/l I gave it up as a lost cause , then decided that because I couldn't find wine 5.0.1 anywhere I downloaded 5.0.2 here -  https://www.winehq.org/announce/5.0.2

Is this OK ? anything else I need to know for the install

P.S. my wine cellar is now fully stocked  ;)

Thanks

Yes Bernie the 5.02 is the last stable version since some days, its just a security update.

You should do the steps shown here and copy paste line after line into the terminal. (ubuntu20 =mint20)

once the steps are done run "winecfg" in terminal and let install the gecko and mono files - after this you have the drive_c in .wine folder as a base for all GPL stuff

Bernie it seems you did not completely install wine.

Please go to https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu and do step by step again

add repository only for Ubuntu 20.04 and then install stable branch.

When all done, run winecfg, you should get this menu from it

After you have succeeded winecfg

Go to your folder "bernie" and unhide hidden files,

now you see .wine -> open it -> drive_c

If you have a Win GPL.exe right click on it and open it with the "wine windows programme starter" once and set it as default.
Now every exe is started with the wine windows programme starter ;)

Title: Re: GPL running in Linux mint 20

Axel

Ive checked & I have the winecnfg menu already

I can go to bernie folder & unhide files

I can open "wine" C:

I click GPL.exe & open with wine prog starter

Gpl begins loading but I get screen freeze with GPL icons , all in large size like its in wrong resolution 640 x 480 ?

Then have to reboot !

So I think wine is all there but maybe a problem with using my 2 hdd's  with partitions ?

I am thinking to put GPL Gem GPL secrets etc all on the same drive instead of seperated and see if that works ?

P.S. I didnt see a need to re install wine but if you think I should must I delete the old wine first ?

What graphics card do you use?
Keep wine as is if it works.

In winecfg graphics menu you can set windowed mode or fullscreen.
Windowed -> If you set the monitors resolution in GEM all menu is 640x480 but driving is fullscreen - I love it!

I prefer to copy my GPL folder to drive_c and install the GEMpackage into C:/gplsecrets (wich is a must!)

Radeon GPU will only run with Direct3DV2 rasterizer!
It's ok for server but problematic for racing, you can't tweak it in a gui...
For experienced Linuxer it is radeon-profile where you can do some basics.

Axel

Strange to say my Radion R9 was running best with open GLV2 !

After swapping the GPU to GForce and messing with drivers,  GPL will run from Linux but only runs Spa at 36 fps . Possibly because I cant get GEM to run and try some other rasteriser ?

I assume you run GEM from linux ?

If so how to do this ?

another thing I noted , now I cant get a race list on iGOR (run from GEM on HDD ) I have checked the server IP the password is OK . UKGPL chat is OK

something wierd is happening with my GPL install  ::)

GEM+ is a must!

You download GEMPackage_2.5.0.32.exe and copy it to drive_c - from here you run it and let install c:/GPLSecrets - it will make shortcuts on the linux desktop

And you have to run this GEM and iGOR in linux!

before you run GEM+ the first time after the install, you have to delete the GEM.ini

You download GEMPackage_2.5.0.32.exe and copy it to drive_c - from here you run it and let install c:/GPLSecrets - it will make shortcuts on the linux desktop

And you have to run this GEM and iGOR in linux!

Have you launched GEMPackage_2.5.0.32.exe ?

DL http://gem.grandprixlegends.info/downloads.html

You cannot run GEM if not installed - it writes data into the registry and makes shortcuts on the desktop

Sorry to be a pita Axel but I'm just not getting this Linux stuff at all .

I have d/l GEM to home /bernie/downloads file .

BUT

I don't see a C: anywhere to copy it to !

The only C: is the one on my HDD which I have disco'd to avoid confusion

now you see .wine open and you see drive_c  ( /home/bernie/.wine/drive_c/)

Title: Re: GPL running in Linux mint 20
Post by: Cookie on August 29, 2020, 07:36:24 PM +0100
Just copy the old GPL folder to drive_c else it can't be found

as linux has other filesystem

you can find the old gpl.exe  but the path to it won't be c: - GEM will not accept this path...

It's GEM not linux making the problem...

OK I have GEM up and running on Linux but have some issues

Spa 67 seems to take an age to load ( 35 - 40 secs from GEM screen , is that good or bad ? ) only runs at 36 fps !

No Shift/R in game

No re set , pressing esc key does nothing , I have to re boot PC and re load game !

Not sure if some are device driver issues ?

Outside of GPL most programme screens are 1/2 or 1/4 full size and not able to change screen size .

Any ideas ?

Copy and paste the GEM/options folder from your Windoze install to the GEM folder in .Wine/drive_c/gplsecrets

As I told you : with an AMD graphic card you won't have fun... it's AMD not making a gui for linux!

Set the preferred mode to "prefer maximum performance" in the PowerMizer

Setting  to power miser to prefare max perf  has not made any difference as far as I can see , Power miser defaults to Auto after rebooting PC which I have to do to quit GPL in order to reset .

To sum up ...

Spa67 takes about the same time to load (maybe a tad faster ),  still cannot exit game with Esc button , no re set with S/R , No race list in Igor , Igor shows as a small 1/4 screen in top lh corner . UKGPL (this screen ) shows as 3/4 size . various other annoying faults .

Axel
Did you ever feel as if for every step forward you have taken 3 steps back ? well that's with this. Nothing is straight forward , I am spending hours here trying to do tasks that I don't understand or how to do them .
My computer knowledge is so basic  that I have trouble finding my way around windows , when it comes to Linux I am completely lost and out of my depth . From your OP it seemed to be fairly straight forward to d/l linux , load up GPL and away you go , all in 35 mins or so . now time has passed and one month or so later I am nowhere . I'm afraid Linux is all goblygook to me , nothing is easy , searching for CPU-X gets thousands of hits , I select the most likely download site , but then get confused with all the options which to me are written in a foreign language !
No doubting my problems are caused by my lack of knowledge and pressing the wrong buttons somewhere along the line .

Thank you for your help and patience but I'm now thinking to give up on Linux as a losing battle  ::)

The latest discovery , In drop down menus , if I move the mouse pointer the menu disapears , same thing happens here on this thread if I try to cut and paste !

Searching google for an answer brings more computer speak that I don't understand , Linux is obviously written by experts for experts to use not dimwits like me  ::)

The wine version is fine, but this mouse pointer lost - is a wrong NVidia version
-> get it back:  pressing ctrl+alt+right arrow - than back - ctrl+alt+left arrow. switch to next desktop and back  ;)

Many questions are answered here: https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.com/p/first-mint-xfce.html
Follow the steps to get the proprietary NVidia driver!

I need to know wich Nvidia GTX you use? wich driver version?

Bernie you are not alone!
Andreas had nearly same problems, his problem was W10 - it recognized the empty SSD and took it in its claws...

So if you use a SSD for mint, dont have it plugged with W10 before you have installed mint.

You can do:

unplug the W10 SSD/HDD

plug the USB mint and let it start by pressing F11 at boot - so you get the boot choices and choose: UEFI USB mint

From this USBmint livesystem you run gparted and delete-erase the content of the SSD or partition where you want mint to be installed.

Bernie I hope to have good news,
my recherche about your problems gave that the kernel of mint 5.4 is too conservative for this GTX1660super and your modern CPU  ::)

I bought a nice little Ryzen APU bundle and combined it with my GT1030
In mint20 I had some strange behaviour of the GPU booting in save mode...

Now I tried the less conservative OS manjaro XFCE (https://manjaro.org/download/) and had great success!

It has the same looking desktop but a way more modern engine under the hood ;)

Manjaro runs linux kernel 5.8 wich knows your CPU + GPU and runs last NVidia driver 450  ;D
You can set the driver to "nonfree" in the install dialogue and have NV450.66 automatically installed!

You have to choose wine in the software manager, no need to go to winehq ;)

Give it a try!

Thanks Axel this sounds good
Quote
Developed in Austria, France, and Germany, Manjaro provides all the benefits of the Arch operating system combined with a focus on user-friendliness and accessibility. Available in both 32 and 64 bit versions, Manjaro is suitable for newcomers as well as experienced Linux users. For newcomers, a user-friendly installer is provided, and the system itself is designed to work fully 'straight out of the box'.

I have d/l the ISO and will try it out soon

Should I copy the ISO to USB stick and do a complete new install,  or does this ISO overwrite my existing mint ?

Write the iso to an USB stick with the pendrive tool and then boot it.

I would let the install wipe out the complete disk, so you get a full fresh install.

Title: Re: GPL running in Linux mint 20
Post by: Cookie on September 20, 2020, 08:58:15 AM +0100
Afair you have an M2 SSD dedicated for linux?

If it is formatted and occupied by W10 - yes!
- Unplug all other HDD and SSDs. -> boot manjaro from USB -> run gparted and delete all partitions of this M2 to have it empty.
Then install manjaro with wine and configure + test it

- after all this is finished you reconnect the other HDD/SSDs

Now you have a dual boot system
- you have to push the F11 (or F9) button tho choose the boot drive in bios when fireing your pc up. manjaro  or windoze

I would not use grub for dual boot - W10 is very problematic with a grub dual boot and linux! My last W10 (beside manjaro) killed the whole system when it was updating...
W10 is very possesive and wants no other "gods" beside it...

So if you follow my advice
- W10 will not see manjaro and leave it alone
- manjaro will see all and you have full access to your "old" GPL!

You must install GEM

(yes if you don't want to copy your GPL folder to drive_C you should connect the HDD first)

First run "winecfg" in terminal and let it install the missing gecko + mono

-> now unhide the view (show hidden files) in your home folder and find the folder /home/bernie/.wine/drive_c/

Go to drive_c and copy the GEMPackage_2.5.0.32.exe and run it - let make desktop shortcuts.

No need to go to winehq.org!

I told you that manjaro has wine in the "software manager" so open it and install it.
Just take the first version as in my pic (red = installed!)

Where to find "software manager " is it hiding somewhere ?

Not meaning to jump in (but with the English installation  ;D ) click 'start'  (or whatever it is called) then begin to type 'add',  then select add/remove software.

When the software manager is first displayed, there is no visible search area.  Just just start typing 'wine' & it will appear before your very eyes!

That's probably as far as I can take you :)

Please answer:

What do you have now, what is done?

1. Have you installed wine?

2. have you opened a terminal and run "winecfg" ?

3. did you get the "wine configuration" window?

4.  have you opened a terminal and run "wine control" and testet the wheel?

5. have you downloaded the GEMPackage_2.5.0.32.exe?
Get it from here: http://gem.grandprixlegends.info/downloads.html

6. have you unhidden the hidden files in your home folder?

then go to /home/bernie/.wine/drive_c/ and put the GEMPackage_2.5.0.32.exe there and run it - right click "open with wine windows..."
- let it make desktop shortcuts only.

When all this is done - please give me a report and I will give you step by step the next actions. (delete the gem.ini !)

This is a Terminal (command line)

Title: Re: GPL running in Linux mint 20
Post by: Cookie on September 30, 2020, 12:19:22 AM +0100
That's what I told you ~12 posts before
This is a GEM and not a linux problem...

Where is your GPL folder?
Wine drive letters are not the W10 drive letters!!!
GEMinstaller will have difficulties to find it from wine - but it is in one of the other drives - something like k: or y: or x: search them...

BUT
Is this M2 such small?  My complete GPL folder is 34GB with all 10 mods and 190 tracks!

Can't you just
9. copy the whole GPL folder from your Windoze HDD to the drive_c?
So GEM installer finds it easy ;)

When this is done,
- before you start GEM for the first time

10. Delete the GEM.INI in /home/bernie/.wine/drive_c/users/Public/Documents/GEM+/

11. Copy and paste the completeGEM/options folder from your Windoze install to the GEM folder in .Wine/drive_c/gplsecrets/GEM - let it overwrite

12. Copy and paste the igor.ini to the iGOR folder in .Wine/drive_c/gplsecrets/igor - let it overwrite

Now run GEM from the desktop icon and give the data needed...

PS
wich wheel do you have? Logitech G27?

Title: Re: GPL running in Linux mint 20
Post by: bernie on October 01, 2020, 11:04:58 AM +0100
Done what you ask in ( 9)

GEM installer can see the GPL.exe but wont complete the install ,I get error message :-

" Set up was unable to create directory Z: \ GPL Error 5 access denied "

whatever that means ?

Have I copied GPL file to the right place , I put it  in the -c: root

My Wheel is crappy Logitech G29

You have copied the Win10 working GPL folder to drive_c ?

Without GEM+ install - does in the copied folder the gplc67.exe run? (open with windows... )

Title: Re: GPL running in Linux mint 20
Post by: bernie on October 01, 2020, 11:23:31 PM +0100
Yes runs from gpl67 exe

Seems I was using the wrong exe , I was trying to point the GEM installer to GPL exe !

Got GEM on my desktop and copied the options folder along with iGOR ,ini

GEM runs and comes up all OK but when I select it GPL loads up with fuzzy and missing  text on the first GPL screen , then select race there is no text at all on the screen , clicking the green button for the race throws up an error message :-

" GPLC67.exe has serious problems and needs to close , this can be a problem in the programme or a deficiency in Wine "

closing GPL goes back to previous page with large screen like cinamascope . click green button again goes to track , again no text and a screen freeze , have to re boot from there .

GPL runs fine from my Win10 HDD  except it is slow to load tracks up and I cant get an iGOR race list , have to join races by multi player and url

Seems you have not installed the NVidia driver yet...

In the start menu of manjaro go to system and select the drivers administration

(https://i.ibb.co/s3m5F1C/Bildschirmfoto-2020-10-02-01-17-33.png) (https://ibb.co/f018CN9)

Choose the proposed and install it .
After restart GPL should work.

Now need to get my G29 driving force wheel sorted , it will not calibrate , so possibly need to install the drivers for that ?

edit to add , switched wheel to PS3 mode and now allows calibration ! Not good though as using FF wants to break my arms , with FF turned off wheel has no feeling at all , feels its not connected to the car

1. Do you have FFB2 in GEM+ options (also in folder)?
2. do you use it?

in Terminal write "wine control" - open Gamecontroler -
3. what do you see?  if you have 2 devices active - try first to disable (jst) if this gives errors try to disable (event) - reenable jst!

Even with stiff FFB run GPL from GEM+
4. is it still such stiff?

PS
No need for a driver - found that the G29 is included in kernel!

ok again

First: GPU
have you installed the NVidia 450.66 driver?

Second: wheel

1  in GEM+ click on "controls"  is "enable force feedback" checked?  (if not - check it)
next
2. run terminal
2a  in terminal write "wine control" (without quotes)
3  a window opens - run the icon "Gamecontroler"

4. what do you get?  G29 one or two times - active?

5 - if you have two G29 devices active -  disable the one with (jst)
next
6. - run the icon "test jostick" look if all buttons work

Now start GPL with green button in GEM

please report and answer all questions

Yes have the driver installed

Two G29 wheels shown
Have disabled the one with JST
G29 (event) is active
wheel tests OK all butttons active but only 2 axis pedals
FF is enabled in GEM

Starting GPL (from GEM ) when I go to the track the wheel goes crazy . unable to control the (in car) wheel which is locked in the full right turn position .
Cannot calibrate wheel in game options as it wants to turn right full time !
All 3 pedals seem to be fully operational

Does the wheel in the "wine control" window - test work ok?
Cursor moves as intended?

Can you test

- run GPL - in first screen! - options - calibrate joystick - does it work?

What are your settings in GEM -> controler? (give me screenshot please)

PS3 mode active!?

Title: Re: GPL running in Linux mint 20
Post by: bernie on October 03, 2020, 05:08:21 PM +0100
wine window test :-
x,y  = clutch moves full vertical axis
Rx,Ry = no operation
Z,Rz = brakes move full vertical axis Gas pedal moves full horizontal axis
POV = No operation

Moving the wheel gives a small horizontal deflection in X,Y axis

Running GPL I can calibrate the wheel and pedals OK in 1st screen ,( FF is active but is heavy to turn the wheel when calibrating)

Go to race , car is in pit , in car view of steering wheel is on full right lock . G29 wheel has gone full right , can turn it back to center ( very strong force ) but has no effect on the in car wheel which does not move at all .
When I release my G29 wheel it goes straight back to right lock !

Axel I have GEM screen shot but forget how to post it  ::) (its an age thing )  ::)

I think these are the control settings you want

Enable Steering hack   yes
Enable Force Feedback  yes
Force Feedback  Latency  =  .085
                          Damping =  40
                          Max Force = 5

( I have been playing around with these  settings with no success but have not a clue how they work in GPL )

Title: Re: GPL running in Linux mint 20
Post by: Cookie on October 03, 2020, 05:32:21 PM +0100
So imo the wine control test works!

Wheel PS3 mode is set?
I have no G29 and no idea what is changed to G27

Now test the other option in Wine control -

disable the one with (event)
reenable the (jst)

so G29 (jst)  is active

now test

should that be so ?
makes me wonder do we have a problem with GPL secrets file ?

OR do both Linux and Win10 share the same file ?

I am also unable to get a race list in iGOR but that has been so since before a tried Linux

Also

have tried iGOR from GEM Linux and get error message :-

followed by another

When you ask "Have I copied GPL file to the right place , I put it  in the -c: root " (wich gpl file ???)
- I understand .wine\drive_c

How comes your win10 uses this too ::)
1. Have you changed a path in your W10-GEM?

No, not all new needed!

COPY the complete working GPL folder to .wine\drive_c
Next you will have to show the path c:\GPL\gpl.exe in left top install to GEM

(https://i.ibb.co/w0F4nVn/Bildschirmfoto-2020-10-05-09-14-23.png) (https://ibb.co/p0BdHcH)

Remember Wine has it's own filesystem - so - Wine c:\ is not Win10 c:\

Yes Axel I understand that now , very confusing having 2 x C:

Anyhow I have loaded GPL into wine C:  , GEM instals pointed to it .

GPL runs but still can't calibrate the wheel

No iGOR race list

should I have deleted GPL secrets first then re installed it ?

iGOR

Go to .wine\drive_c\gplsecrets\igor
open igor.ini with editor notepad (just doubleclick)

Is this the first lines?
if not do it
[ RaceListServers ]
IP                        = igor.gplrank.info
___________________________________________________________
Now test Gpl by starting with unplugged wheel - try keyboard to test

1. Is NVidia driver 450/455 active?
2. Can you read the menu fonts?

when gpl starts it wants to calibrate
- just press "ok" on bottom
- assign steering keys to left - right arrows
throttle to up
brake to down
and set the shifting to automatic

Now you can do a slow lap and see if gpl runs graphics ok
__________________________________________________________

G29

Now back to the event option in Wine control -

disable the one with (jst)
reenable the (event)

so G29 (event)  is active

we solve the G29 later- I search the net

Title: Re: GPL running in Linux mint 20
Post by: bernie on October 05, 2020, 05:24:35 PM +0100
Igor is set to the correct IP

I can ping the race server and get 4 good returns

GEM loads GPL fine I can go racing with keypad ( but only numeric keys work )

Graphics are good

With JS I can calibrate the wheel OK but when I go to race screen the wheel and pedals do not work , just no movement at all
In wine control joystick test there is no deflection response on any of the axis

With event set in Wine joystick tests good all axis ok , there is a constant force showing in test FF
In GPL I can calibrate OK but driving is almost impossible with the FF effects very strong , If I let go my grip on the wheel it shakes back and forth like a steam hammer on steroids

Maybe this can be fixed with some better  FF settings ?

Ok so let try the FFB2

Download https://www.sendspace.com/file/uon4cm

Put the file as is into /home/bernie/.wine/drive_c/GPLSecrets/GEM/options

Set the controls  to the values as in my pics - check FFB2

(https://i.ibb.co/94NmGgz/Bildschirmfoto-2020-10-05-20-38-09.png) (https://imgbb.com/)
(https://i.ibb.co/N7KDZ9f/Bildschirmfoto-2020-10-05-20-38-39.png) (https://ibb.co/t3Dj8qn)

The higher the value in maximum force the lower the strength to steer - just test and try

Title: Re: GPL running in Linux mint 20
Post by: bernie on October 05, 2020, 10:00:15 PM +0100
Yup that's got things working better,  but it needs some tweeking .
I'm getting  no resistance on the straights , then suddenly when you turn into a bend or corner the FF comes in with a jerk  . I never used FF before so not sure if that's how it should be , but I would have thought the transition would have been smooth .

Previously I have had it set without FF , there was always some resistance ( too strong resistance ) to be felt at all times , even though FF  was turned off

If I turn off FF now there is no resistance at all !

Will have to play around with  the other settings and see if its fixable to my liking

With the "no race list " problem I was wondering if its possibly my router blocking the race server , like incoming only ?

I think I can check the router  out , otherwise I have my old PC with working GPL on it , I could try that , it should prove weather its a PC or a connection problem .

Bit of a bugger having no race list

Bernie it's fine FFB works.

Now we can try to optimize

Do not change the 0 in damping and latency!

Try max force up to 450 - 500 even more if needed - as the higher the number the lower the maximum force!
I test it in Monza rumbling the curbs in curva grande and Lesmos!

if Sitting in the pits steering fast (left - right - left - right) gives you a medium-soft resistance than it's ok.

There is no auto centering spring possible,
as GPL produces no force as long you do a straight line
but
in linux we have a better FFB as the deadzone is much smaller!
!!! test it by doing slow snake lines...compare it by doing the same in W10!!!

Doing Curva grande should give you a good smooth feeling of the steering.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Are you ok with the wheel rotation of 900° ?
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________

igor racelist is not a problem of the router!

it's a problem of the igor.ini!

What action have you done with it yet?

Open it with editor notepad and check if the path to the gpl.exe is set correct!

Great!

Yes linux has own firewall UFW by default - no need to worry - no need to config if nothing special is running.
No AV needed as linux has much saver system derrived from server system unix.

Please can you make a screenshot with open GEM   + iGOR?

just use "printscreen" button - save it to your desktop

and upload it to https://imgbb.com/  by drag and drop the file into the upper part of the page

copy the second choice on bottom "BBCode full" and place it in post

Axel
Hope the above is OK ?

What is the best way to put shortcuts to desktop ? I can do drag drop but get a message saying not advised as a security risk !

oups

Now please step by step - what have you done? Any difficult input like strange path?

Where was the Wiesbaden install file wich folder?
(I first move a windows file from downloads to .wine\drive_c - and run it from there, Linux has other filesystem than wine!)

Often it helps to shut down the PC and let it start again, then Linux sorts it...

to be prepared I installed manjaro

3 clicks for Wiesbaden

FFB

In your screenshot FFB2 is not checked in GEM !? (under the 60fps patches ;) )

It has to be to work with the settings I told you ;)

Berni, this is basically what you have on the USB with manjaro when you put it in and run it,
If it is more, it phones home and spies on you - extreme caution please, that is not honest!

if you want something that 99.99% protects you and respects your privacy e.g. when banking, then install "tails" another linux version made for safe computing...

Woooa Axel , I was just showing you that out of interest .

Personally I think someone is maybe cashing in on Linux , I would have to question the morality if not the legality of selling someone else's product , unless of course under license and all profits going to the rightful source ,i.e. the Linux developers and code writers etc.

As for me the "free" version is fine , though I will be making a small donation out of gratitude "If" I decide to keep using Linux  :)

Back to the wheel problem , I have tried several settings, its still not how I would like it to be , I am currently running without using FF . It feels like the wheel isn't connected to the car at times + have to re calibrate every time I run  GPL or iGOR .

I wonder if this might be something to do with the Logitec profiler on my win10 install getting copied when installing  GPL file to my wine c:

For me the difference of feeling in the FFB was the missing centering spring
wich I used with low 10% in W7 - but after 5 laps it was forgotten.

1. do you have checked the FFB2 in GEM? (it's off in your screeny!)

2. wich rotation 270-900° is set in Logitec profiler on your win10 install?

3. wich rotation degree do you want?

4. wich wheel bias do you set in your GPL car setups?

W10 settings are not transported in wine!

No 1 Yes its been tried with FFB2 on and off

No2 Not used , I deleted Logi Profiler because I thought it was rubbish

No3 No idea

No4 different ones for the track

Does the wheel work without the profiler?

Clive in Linux the G25/7/9  firmware + driver is allready in the kernel of the system, so nothing to install.

Bernie
the wheel turns  1x so it's 360° the G27 has 900° rotation that means you can turn it 2.6 times

1. You have the one with the PS sign!?    (https://www.logitechg.com/de-de/products/driving/driving-force-racing-wheel.html#product-tech-specs)

2. now how many turns?

3. afair G29 has no rotation or strength settings in W10 profiler!?

If you want it, you can get a customized file that sets the rotation to any degree you like - I prefer 540°

No1 If you mean PS logo on the wheel boss ? then Yes

You can set the turns from 200 to 900 in win10 using the logitec profiler

You can set strength settings in Win 10 profiler

I used Manjano / GEM for GPL Wiesbaden race it wasn't too bad , that was after re setting the Logi profiler in w10 , Funny thing was I just tried Wiesbaden again and was sat in pits with no wheel operating , gears , gas , brkes all ok but no wheel,  try to calibrate wheel in "options" gave a screen freeze when selecting a control to steer left !
I had GEM controls set to
steering hack "on"
FF                   "on"
No FF Latency
No FF damping

After changing Latency to .05 and Damping to 10 the wheel was able to go !
Yet I was able to run it without those settings before the iGOR race !

The only thing , I have been playing around with the FF settings in W10 GEM install but dont see how this could effect the Manjano settings ?

Help please
Just noticed in GEM that if I click on the Seasons button , nothing happens , GEM freezes and I have to re set ?

Wich mod is selected in GEM+ ?

if 67 e.g.

Go in GPL folder/seasons and rename the  67season.ini to 67season.ini.xxx

Look for 67season.ini.PreGEM and rename it to  67season.ini

IF this does not help

Go to

/home/bernie/.wine/drive_c/users/Public/Documents/GEM+/

and rename or delete the GEM.ini

Then start GEM+
now you have to give the setting infos again

I hope this helps

REMINDER
never touch this aera as it destroys your season files!

Axel , tried your suggestions but no luck , I Re named Gem and my old GEM,ini as you said but still have the problem . When I delete Gem the installer does not rebuild the GEM .ini file the file isn't there .
Was wondering if I could copy GEM.ini over from my win10 hdd but not sure what is the best way to do this ?

Bernie you should rename the GEM.ini and then just start the GEM shortcut on the desktop. Then you will be asked again for the language and where the gpl.exe is.

Yes , that is what I have done,  but GEM does not right the the files , there is no GEM.ini folder , it is still as if I had deleted it  :o

This may not be it at all :)  but from running winecfg,  on the 'Applications' tab, is it set to mimic a particular Windows version?
Maybe the GEM.INI would be found in another directory?  (maybe search under your 'drive_c' directory).

I think for example. that WinXP mode will write the GEM.INI in the GEM+ folder where the GEMP2.exe is located.
Later Win behaviour may write that somewhere under .wine/drive_c/users/xxxx  as mentioned elsewhere

So may be as well to check whether there is another copy in another location.   Otherwise, maybe re-run the installation for GEM+ again.
I've had to do that before where adding a mod broke something & re-installing GEM+ got it working again.

Otherwise, I'm probably out of ideas, so back to Axel :)

Cheers,
Dave.

Yes, some posts before I told where the gem.ini is - I think it's the same place in all Windoze versions ;)

/home/bernie/.wine/drive_c/users/Public/Documents/GEM+/

If there is no gem.ini GEM+ will build a new one when started.

OK I got it to re write GEM.ini

I can access the "seasons" file

when I go to close GEM I get the box GEM+ has changed the following :-

GPLC67.exe
GEM.ini

Next I click OK to exit but cant do so because the GEM page has frozen

Back to square 1 having to re boot to exit   :taz:

Bernie
in linux a frozen program can be ended by ctrl+alt+backspace - this just stops all running processes - you just have to login again

I've no idea what you made in this folder where the gem.ini is...

Have you reinstalled the whole gempackage?

Yes but it doesn' t "unfreeze " GEM , as I said , I have to re boot .

Not sure what is the whole package, I just re build GEM with the installer .

Ah, ok - that killed the install - i guess you did not uninstall the whole thing first...

The installer for GEM installs not only GEM! It's GEMPackage_2.5.0.32.exe

Linux is not Windoze! It is not as tolerant vs errors. If something is a little different it will not work.

Now you have to first uninstall and wipe all gplsecrets stuff.
