Title: UKGPL Season 22 (2011-2012) Novices (65) - Surfers Paradise - Nov 8

UKGPL Season 22 65 Novices Trophy
Race 1 Surfers Paradise

Welcome to the opening round of the Novices Trophy for Season 22. It seems a long time since Season 21 so good luck to everyone although I like the table as it is! May be (Will be  ;D )  the only time I am top!!!

We have a lot of new drivers this season so more experienced hands should be ready to allow a bit of room for learning and avoiding spinners (like me!). Alternatively they might get blown away by some bandit Pro!

The venue for our first race is the wonderful Surfers Paradise track in sunny Queensland. Many of the GP stars were found here through the 60's attending the Tasman Series events, a championship split between Australian and New Zealand tracks and often used by the teams as 'shakedown' races for their new chassis prior to the start of the new European F1 season. The 65 is well suited to this short track and should provide some close racing. However, be aware that it could be a little crowded early on and patience will be a must. Although we are not fully moderating the race, in view of the short length of the circuit the first two laps will be fully reviewed.

Thanks to Geoff for the background info.

Download the circuit here (http://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/inc_tracksSurfers_js.htm)

Please check the Season 22 pages for details (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=335&theme=6) regarding rules and the Novices Trophy (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=342&theme=6) pages in particular.

Please see the Novices registration thread for an explanation of the chassis allocations shown below:

I installed the track yesterday and it's really fun (it reminds me Albi) but I realised it's still not included on the GPLRank.
So, I'm wondering about the laptimes of you other Novs: mine is a low 1.13, with BC below 1.13 in a formerly red car, before it bleached under the rising sun... ;)
Cu all on track

1:15-1:16 :( I am at the back again...

UPDATE: After a short session with me at Surfers, passing on a few tips...Paul's new PB is 1:13.78 in the BT11. Well done mate, and watch out you Novices!!   ;D

BT7 - typically low 13s in mid-race trim.  Have been into the 12s few times when really hammering on though :)

I'm currently low 1:15's, I'd like to think I'd get a 1:14 in qually.

To be absolutely clear qualifying starts at latest at 9.00pm but drivers may join the server as soon as it is up. That may be as early as 8:30pm. Reserve drivers must clear the server by 8.55pm and wait until 9.00pm to rejoin to allow the Full time drivers to join.

OK?

Paul. Do I understand that correctly that if you go on at say 8.45pm over 30 minutes before the race starts a time you do counts in qually. If so that's more than our usual 30 mins qually.
Anyway in the hope of phsyching out my rivals ;) I have just done 2 fun races on the server & quallied in 1.12.48 & 1.12.14. Did me no good though - bumped off at turn one both times & by my standards a good start obviously slow by everyone else's. I would have liked to keep the 1.12.14 for tomorrow 'cos I HOPE it won't be far off. Race pace is what counts & that's a LOT LOT slower.

Blast... and triple blast...

I was hoping low 1:13 would put me high and I can definitely do it BUT at that pace I spin off every lap or two... :(

We have done away with 30 mins qualifying because it was very hard to get the server started on time. We have moved to a system where there will be at least 30 mins qually but up to 60 mins. Reserves must leave the server between 35 and 30 minutes to go to ensure that Full Timers can get on. If they rejoin they should pick up their previous times.

If the race is 32 laps would you fill with 32 laps of fuel or is there scope for ..ahem.. short filling.. and stopping for fuel.

A shift+r for tires or refueling is not allowed by the rules!

Those 65s have a low consumption, if you would stop you would never get back to your lost position ;)

I did a 250miles 67s race at Indy and stopped once for refueling and lost my lead, the winner did not stop!

Refueling was very dangerous in the 1960's, and was not allowed in F1.  At a GT race at Goodwood, a few years earlier, the pits burnt down after a refueling problem.  We do not want this!  Racing with too little race fuel is against the rules. :2guns:

You need to test Jonnyboy. You may well find that you need nothing like as much as 32 laps...

Well that was HUGELY disappointing. Started late because I was trying to herd people into the servers so only ten mins left in qually and I couldn't get under 1:14. Been doing 1:13s regularly in training. After about three laps my steering wheel started wobbling and then it fell off... not sure who totalled me but I lost all drive and then had to wait for the whole field. Difficult after that. Then when Jason caught me (and I had hoped to stay clean and not get lapped) it was blue flag city.

Really difficult, then I took Nigel out when I lost it on T3 just as I was about to let him through (sorry mate). Then set about chasing Roberto and Economia. Got past EE when he made a mistake and then I returned the favour. Just wasn't good enough and I span it five or six times.

Shows that I have come on to be hugely disappointed with eleventh but I had the worst laptime consistency - partly down to slowing to get lapped but on the whole very frustrating.

Hard to get the modding and the racing balanced. Have been looking forward to this for weeks and I didn't really enjoy it :(

WD to my mate Jason and well done to Rog and Al (who is the dark horse now?)

Finally, hope the debutants enjoyed it. Pierre and Phillipe did very well and kept it going - check out my first race at Mosport (S19) if you think I am kidding! And well done Johnnyboy - I assume your lobby name is John Pennington!

Hehehe Sergio... I doubt I will be too much of a threat for the series championship, my BT7 will be a sitting duck at the faster tracks! This race was almost perfect for me. Surfers is a track that suits the BT7 well and I had the car set up perfectly for it, it was so well balanced and I could throw it around with confidence. My race wasn't free of mistakes, in fact there were a few moments when I was really close to losing it but again the car was perfect and I could recover every error!
On the starting grid I was very concious of the fact that Surfers is not an easy track for passing and that the win would likely decided by backmarkers and lapping incidents. I was right. I mad a great start and moved from 4th to 3rd on the start straight. A lap or so later I made my only contested overtake, passing norm into T4. A lap or two later race leader Happy Al made a mistake exiting T3 and I out dragged him into T4. Al then put me under pressure for a few laps until we caught our first backmarker. Philippe was doing ok at the back, not bad speed for a new entrant but clearly wasn't sure how to be lapped... I made it past ok but when AL tried to follow me through Philippe turned in on him and there was contact resulting in Happy Al becoming a less-than-happy Al. Perhaps all new entrants  should watch Badbloods race for tips in how to be lapped... BB is the expert in this!
From there on all I had to do was keep the car on the road... Roguk kept me on my toes the whole way, never more than a few seconds behind, but I was driving well and the backmarkers were generally very considerate.
In all, my 105th UKGPL race was apretty good one :)

Hello,

Well done to Jason, Rog and Hendy :)

A great start to the new season, with some close racing and lots of drivers around the same pace. I think this is going to be a classic season.

I found it hard to get a clear lap in qually, with such a short circuit and lots of people trying to set their fastest times I kept finding myself catching people when I was settling into a rhythm. That being said I did match my PB from practice, so I started second, only 0.035 from a pole. I spent the end of last season chasing a pole, and never got one, always starting second, one of my goals for this season is to start from pole.

I have been practicing my starts off line, so I was annoyed at myself that I messed up my start slightly. Just goes to show that there is nothing like the adrenaline of a real race. I did manage to pull into a slight lead by the first corner, which I think Norm lifted slightly, so thank you Norm. After this I tried to pull out a lead but I couldn’t settle myself as I’m still not use to being in a lead. Jason was catching me, and was making himself known in my mirrors. I made a slight mistake going into turn 3 and he got past me.

I’d lost the lead but I think it settled me down a bit, as my consistency was much better after this. I managed to hold onto Jason and started to real him back in a little. We caught upto a back marker, Phillipe, who was driving nicely, but held up Jason just enough for me to be all over him. Going into the last corner Phillipe move wide and I thought he was letting us past. Jason got past without any problems and I followed him into the gap. At this point Phillipe turned in on me and resulted in a clash of wheel, and I spun out. I’ve got a feeling that Norm Hance was also caught up in this accident.

I got back onto track and started to recover some lost ground. I think I rejoined about 4th or so. I was following Norm at this point, and we were about the same pace. I think he must of made a mistake because I was suddenly a lot closer, and I could see him just in front of me. I settled down to do some of my best laps around this time and got onto the tail of Norm. I then made my only mistake of the race, going into turn 4 Norm had a spin, and because I was focused on him I also had a spin of my own. Feeling a little silly I got going again, and I found myself in front of Norm Hance :) don’t know how that happened, his spin must have been worst than mine.

Now with Norm all over the back of me, we got to doing some nice close racing laps. I was having a great time, as we were both quite evenly matched. We caught up to some more back markers, who where having their own battle. We caught them going into turn 2/3, they moved out of our way, or so I though so. Going into turn 3, the driver infront, who was Phillipe again, moved wide, which I though he was letting us past. I went for the gap and was along side him when he turned in. This cause me to have a massive crash which I needed to take a Shift & R. Again this crash also took out Norm, sorry again Norm, that’s 2 of my accidents that you were involved in.

I did my stop and go and resumed my race. I was now too far behind 3rd place, but 5th place was very close behind me. I pushed a little to get everything upto temp and managed to pull away a little from 5th place. I wasn’t really catching up to anyone in front so just drove the car to the flag. For some reason I thought I’d finished 3rd after the race, sorry to Hendy, as I think I did you a dis-service. No idea why I thought I’d finished 3rd, I guess I was just too hopeful.

Overall a great fun race, and a very close one too looking at the times in both the race and in qually. I think this is going to be a very close season with some good newcomers too, I hope you feel welcome and continue to build up your speed and consistency.

I really want to win a race this season, it’s my main goal. A podium would be a good start as I’ve only ever been on the podium once, back in season 16.

Onwards to the polo capital of the world, Mexico.

PS, lol at Badblood, I did say there would be a dark horse in the race, I just didn’t say who…….. and in my defence, I really was struggling for pace only a day before the race. It really did just suddenly click for me, I have to thank my teammate Geoff for coaching me on driving the BT11.

RGR that Jason,
no matter if you finish the race only one second in front the other guys, indeed it means it has been a very good and fought race, the must is...to finish in front the other guys or at least to be competitive and aggressive (respecting the rules obviously) !
Anyway if you've got pressure from behind all the time untill the finish line, your behaviour has been adequate to the situation and it is not so simple to stay calm.

Nice to get Pole although slower than Monday fun race for me & HappyAl.
Turn 1 becomes tight if your on pole so had to lift or cause a crash & HappyAl swept into the lead. Jason was pretty racy & passed me on lap 2. Then followed lots of laps where the gap between 1st & 4th opened & closed but Rog(4th) was rarely over a second behind me. Eventually I went a bit wide & he was past so I was 4th. After one of Al's many adventures I was back in 3rd but had a spin trying to lap someone which caused Al to spin as I tried to recover. Deliberately let Al resume ahead of me after this. Then went off making the classic novice error of hesitating as AL had yet another crash with a backmarker & messed up the bend & went off myself. ShiftR & S&G put me 7th. Was gaining on 6th place Nigel when he spun & that's where I finished, 6th.
Incidentally I always tried to press the arm raised button in thanks if I lapped anyone & they moved over ok so please don't take it as an angry shaken fist.
As Al said its difficult to build up some speed in qually when the track is so short & becomes crowded. I suppose I shouldn't be happy with 6th but I definitely didn't have the race pace for even a podium. Well done to the podium & I hope the new drivers enjoyed it. Commiserations to Paul not what he was hoping for in his new car. Its going to be as tough as ever.

I really enjoyed my first outing in the 65's and was pleased with 8th- although I had a big crash around lap 3 or 4 where I hit an invisible car that sent me upside down- I'm sorry if I spoilt anyone's race with this but cars disappearing and reappearing plagued me all race. I had a nice spell mid race with a little consistancy but that changed later on with several spins in one lap. I'm looking forward to the next race already- its nice to race with people who try to race and not shunt you off or drive the wrong way round. Thanks all- now where did I put my sumbrero....

Not a bad start for the season.
My bleached fezza did a good job with her default setup, I really can't complain about both qualify and race results.
A clean rae, without any problem on my side.
Grats to everybody raced and to the race organization.
See you all in Mexico!!

Quick question about moderator's report, are all incidents reviewed this year or just the reported one?

I have reviewed the first two laps and I will check Shift-R/Stop n Go but apart from that it is reported incidents only. It is not ideal but it is very time consuming and the lighter modding is to support the three servers.

Feel free to NOT report anything!!!

We had over 40 drivers out!

For any new drivers, if you want to report an incident in the race, you just click on the link under the race results and you can enter the details. It is useful to know what time the incident occurred and you can upload a clip (if it is small) from your own client replay. It may be different to the server replay and allow a different view of an incident.

No, this way is better. I won't be wreporting anything as I think it was just racing incidents rather than anything that needs looking at.

Hope it helps lighten your load.

Great race for me really enjoyed it, 3rd on grid but was down to 4th at 1st corner, next 8 laps trying to keep up with front 3 cars, lap 8 Happyal unfortunately lost 2nd place when lapping a car, i also got held up a bit, then on to catch up with front 2 cars, lap 12 got back behind NHance and lap 13 he went wide at turn 2 which let me pass, now trying to keep up with blito and keep NHance behind me, lap 21 resolved the NHance prob as he had incident with another car in turn 4, after that it was just a question of keeping cool and getting to end of race, no way could i seem to challenge blito his driving was spot on and deserved the win.
