Title: 65mod Cars
Post by: Clive Loynes on September 16, 2019, 07:14:39 PM +0100
Could someone please direct me to a ranked list of the 65mod Cars?

I seem to remember that the BT7 was the slowest but I can't find a list showing how the others stack up.

Cheers

Clive(not the evil one)

Yes, that's pure numbers, so the Honda is best...

But
other main factors are

- personal feelings
- weight balance
- long or short wheelbase
- reliability
- gearbox
- handling

I compared alien's lap times at Zandvoort and came up with the following pecking order:-

Lotus 1:26.168
Ferrari 1:26.340
BT11 1:26.465
BRM 1:26.665
Honda 1:26.673
Cooper 1:27.269
BT7 1:27.525

FWIW in my experience with the 65's.

As has already been said, which car is fastest for you will be all about being comfortable with the car you are using.

For me the BT11 is the car that gives me the best all round performance and produces my best times.
The Honda is typically insane, and managing the engine revs to get the best out of it without blowing bits all over the track is a real challenge that I enjoy.
The BT7 is much maligned and really not all that much slower if you use the fantastic road holding to the max and wring the neck of the slightly lower powered engine. Maybe it is my driving style, but I find that I can throw the BT7 at a corner and it WILL stick, then because of the missing horsepower you can stamp on the gas out of corners without losing the rear end. For quite a while I held the unconfirmed World lap record at Snetterton in the BT7...OK that was with a little slipstreaming and as I had no replay to submit it never became official.
Robert Fleurke tamed the Cooper and was just about unbeatable in that car, so it is not to be discounted.
The BRM has the top speed I think and on any track with long straights is a serious contender, although I have never really used it all that often.
The Ferrari should rightly  be considered one of the fastest cars with its smooth power delivery.
The Lotus is very nimble and quick and is probably the pick of the bunch.

But, with almost all of the cars having very similar power stats, your best times will come from the car that "feels" right, because these cars race right on the edge and are great fun for that very reason. Looking at the Zandvoort lap times shows that there is not a lot of daylight between the cars over a single hot lap, and over a whole race the average times will be much closer.

Yup - feel is the important bit.
I've won the '65s in the Waza at least once - but my attempts in the theoretically better 1512 have all failed as I didn't gel with it's driving style so much.
I've actually done better in seasons while driving slower (than the Ferrari) cars like the BT11 and 7 :clown:

My rare goes in the BRM have generally been quite successful as it drives a bit like the Waza but with better top end.
I'd probably suck in the Lotus as I've hardly ever driven it...

Thanks Tim.

The Waza was a temptation but in the end I've gone for the BT7.  I was intending to have a go at Brands before I realised that my wife had arranged for us to be in Northumberland today!
