Shortest race ever. T1 - I slowed and kept right to avoid a spun Ferrari and got rear-ended onto my lid. Game Over!

I discovered this track version, I trained on the old Virginia. Thanks to Baab, too ...but I didn't received your mail. Title: Re: UKGPL Season 42 (Spring 2023) 1969 F1 - VIR - May 14 Post by: Phil Thornton on May 15, 2023, 10:38:35 AM +0100 A difficult race for me, I couldn't get any heat into the tyres no matter what wing settings I tried. I tried wing settings at 3, 6, 9 and 12 degrees but it didn't make much difference to my overall lap times. The gains and losses seemed to even out. I suppose that means this is quite a well balanced track, a good mix of fast corners and straights. Anyway I settled on 6 degrees.
The race started quite well. I picked up a couple of places at the start and I settled in behind JonnyO and Enrique. However they were too fast for me and in an effort to keep up I overdrove the car and made too many mistakes. A pattern that continued throughout the rest of the race. I had a good battle with Evil before his engine problems, well done on making the finish. Grats to Uli on a dominant win, you were very quick! A brilliant drive from Greg in the Lotus, very impressive. Grats on the podium JonnyO. Title: Re: UKGPL Season 42 (Spring 2023) 1969 F1 - VIR - May 14 Post by: uli on May 15, 2023, 11:12:52 AM +0100 A happy but not brilliant victory...
Somehow I wasn't in the mood yesterday, just couldn't find a fast rhythm, wasn't in shape or was it because I still don't trust the McLaren M7a Cossy after the frustration in Bathurst ...? In any case, in training I was far from my pB from my preparation (1:45.5), which for the most part had also been done on the impossible old track (= Rally Cross for F1 ;D)... My start wasn't bad, but Greg’s was better, so I had to brake on the last moment in T1. Happy we didn't touch each other I must slowed down. My Antipasti Teamie Axel promptly hit me in the back and the CHAOS ensued … :o I had much luck at that moment, didn't notice anything at all and was able to pull away quickly. But what the GPL damage model of the '69 offered - ::) impossible, :o horrible to watch, simply unbelievable - actually more than half of the cars should have been eliminated in lap 1 ... When I saw Greg back in second position already in R10!! great catch up from P14 !! I had a lead of about +23s. That looked like an easy task to carry the M7A to the target. But it is nothing new, when you're not under full pressure, some lacks of concentration followed and a spin closed the gap more and more. Maybe it was just the sumptuous dinner? ;D Congratulations to Greg and Johnny, my Antipasti teamies good day for us ;D and all finishers, thanks to all back markers for fair lapping. I'm hoping to be in better form at Road Atlanta - the form of the day is becoming more and more important... ::) ;D Title: Re: UKGPL Season 42 (Spring 2023) 1969 F1 - VIR - May 14 Post by: maddog on May 15, 2023, 02:05:07 PM +0100 In the 'Heavy' race, it was a two horse race - a red one, and an orange one. Those behind were mostly spotted in my
mirrors. 8) I quickly tagged onto a Philippe of orange, as soon as the race had begun. Soon realised he'd put on less wing, with some cosy cornering on lap 1. We'd soon gapped the field and decided to await, a deciding mistake for one of us to make. T'was thense wih a careless gear change, my rev counter saw red, which led by expiration, to a motor, dead, after only a couple of laps led. A lead foot can make a face red. :-\ Title: Re: UKGPL Season 42 (Spring 2023) 1969 F1 - VIR - May 14 Post by: JonnyO on May 15, 2023, 09:53:08 PM +0100 This race was for me to learn the track, I really don't have a passion for VIR. I like it with mod67 , but I don't like it with the other mods, and don't ask me why .
I got the podium because other drivers made mistakes, and Farina unfortunately lost his engine at some point. I was worried about Doni disappearing, I could have sworn he was on the qualy list but he wasn't on the grid. But now we know that he preferred to rest a little, logical for someone who has millions of coins in his mod69x UKGPL account. Uli and Greg's pace was out of reach of the other mortals, when Greg got close to my M7, I ran to the right side on the straight to not get in the way. Congratulations guys, you were very fast!!!! Title: Re: UKGPL Season 42 (Spring 2023) 1969 F1 - VIR - May 14 Post by: Philippe Girard on May 16, 2023, 09:26:28 AM +0100 actually martin, i had almost no wings.
too bad for your engine, we could have fought until the end of the race. Suddenly, after your retirement, I understood that you had heating problems, I did not want the same thing to happen to me as in silverstone, where I blew up my engine when I was in the lead. So I slowed down a bit to save my engine. Congratulations to the finishers, not easy to reach the end on this track Title: Re: UKGPL Season 42 (Spring 2023) 1969 F1 - VIR - May 14 Post by: maddog on May 16, 2023, 07:31:13 PM +0100 I think you are right Philippe. My car was set for maximum revs without closely following your car. Your great speed killed my motor! ;) To be a champion, the car must survive.
