Season 25 Friday Trophy - Rounds 27 & 28 - Edmonton

Still 8 races left in this series, so plenty of opportunity to win points ( or lose them !) This circuit is a little more technical than Spa and the long straight should offer some hope to the heavies trying to stay with the Lights.

Edmonton is a track that we have used in F2 before, but probably we have not seen many 69x races here. The layout should suit both Mods with the nimble F2's and the grip and power of the 69's

This round is for the F2s and 69X.

Full(ish) moderation of lap 1 red zone.

To my surprise, the 69x is a peach to drive at this track. The down-force is great. I had to spend a lot more time behind the wheel of the F2 car, and kept going back to the default set-up after I would make it too difficult to drive. I decided to only make very small changes to the F2 set-up, and so far it is helping me stay on track.

Can't make this one either as I will be working until 2am tonight :(

Sorry for the start of race 2. Got a great launch, tried to take advantage of an opportunity, but got all unbalanced and lost it. :(

Raoni Frizzo in the F2 race, Dean Logan in the 69X race...
I had lot of nice gifts in these races.

I know it does not repair lost places, or lost races, but at least we can sentence the wrongdoers to 50 laps in a F2 BT14 around Nurby.  ::)



edit.......  :(      the chief mod has just told me I can't apply those sorts of penalties, only public floggings with a worn tyre are allowed!

If belted in steel you could make them a frayed.  :angel:

Shame the F2 race was not a 1-2 lap sprint!  Us back-row boys would have done quite well thank you very much!
Ah,  but I guess the point is to take the places & then keep earning them.  That's  a bit trickier  (speaking just for myself there Billy!).
Still, shouldn't grumble too much.  My previous best (apparently) was a 1:35 with the Brabham,   quite pleased to have got a  mid 1:32 during the race.


I should probably complain about the tools now :)  I'd noticed that my 'loud' pedal has been a little bit erratic on the gas recently.  Maybe the problem was going straight into half qually then race,  but there was definitely some full-throttle boggyness moments.    Seemed better in the 2nd event (oh dear - but *that* was not really good at all...)  but after reading some stuff online,  I think I have a date at some point over the weekend with a couple of screwdrivers & some contact cleaner to try some pot-cleaning. 

Unfortunately then,  means I may not be able to get around to clearing the loft after all...  [although, I suspect that will still happen - somehow...]

Well done to the podiums in both races; Clive and Axl in the F2's and Mark and Martin in the 69x's.

As much as I enjoyed the first race the second 69x race was even better.

Not for everyone maybe but for me great track, great cars, great fun. In addition its always a pleasure to be on track with Martin.... well I was on the track where Martin was I do not know....... 1.25!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Grats to Ronnie and Mark on their wins and some great racing.

Race 1 was a defeat snatched from the jaws of victory for me  ::). Ronnie was as quick in his Cooper as I expected him to be, and took pole only to discover that he could not see the start flag  ;). I remembered having that problem myself in our recent F2 championship race and hoped that I might be able to exploit that in the run to T1.
I'm not sure if it was the reason, but I arrived at T1 first and got through smoothly and set about building a gap to defend the slipstreamers at the end of the lap. At about half distance I had built a nice cushion and the car felt good, so I wondered if I could squeeze a sub 1:30 lap out of tha car as it got lighter on fuel.......bad idea!!! I stuck a wheel on the grass and fired myself off into the undergrowth. That dropped me back to about 4th or 5th place and left Ronnie with a comfortable hold on 1st spot  :-\. As a result I had some great racing chasing down Dean , Axel and Mark.
 The finish was a bit of a disaster, as it transpired that Axel was running low on fuel ( I thought he was trying to be ultra defensive lol) and I lined him up for an attack out of the last corner to try and snatch second place. Axel went very tight on the inside line so I kept wide to cut back underneath him and got what I thought was a great drive off the corner.

The problem was that Mark was threatening to take advantage of our tussle. mark went wide out of the final turn...Axel stayed slightly to the right, but crucially left an inviting gap up the inside..so, I kept the gas nailed and sent my car between Axel and the Armco. Unfortunately I clipped the barrier and it bounced me slightly towards Axel/ The result was that I hit Axel...lost all 4 wheels and crossed the line airborne and without wheels. Undoubtedly the lack of wheels sticking out improved the aerodynamics and allowed me to fly faster to take the flag in 2nd place. ( I'll put in a report and let the other mods decide on that one Axel).

Race 2 showed up my lack of preparation for these 69x's. I did not have a setup, it was more like a random assortment of settings that did not wish to work with each other. Frantic tweaking during qually did nothing to improve a car that ..a) did not want to turn in...and b) when it did eventually get its nose into a corner would often decide to ignore steering inputs and only respond to large pokes of gas and/or brakes to control direction.
Quite how I wrestled a pole position out of that monster was a total mystery. ???  Once again I knew that the start would be crucial and sure enough although I absolutely creamed that engine off the line Martin's Matra sailed past before T1. Ronnie also spoilt the party and set off after Martin.
From where I sat Martin did look like the most promising candidate for the "Lawnkeepers award for well tended grass verges". Maybe it was his cold tyres but he was more sideways than that other fella  who has a similar reputation around these parts  ::). Sure enough Martin got one wheel once to often onto the green stuff and let Ronnie and myself through. It quickly became obvious that Ronnie had set his car up with tremendous drive off the slower corners  and he had his gearing just about perfect I think. Whereas my car was more like a rallycross rollerskate...OK provided I was drifting it under power and the terminal speed on tha long straight was impressive, but any thought of attacking Ronnie under the brakes was going to end in disaster............and it did!! several times  :-\.
It was not until the final 3-4 laps that I began to extract some reliable pace from the car and by then it was all too late,..... and too little. In fact I probably did not deserve to pick up the points that I did given the appalling race that I ran.
I still enjoyed the racing, even if I did see the front and back of the same cars quite often between my excursions amongst the green stuff. I noticed that Martin set a stunning FL and recovered to get on the podium...great stuff Martin  ;). and grats to Mark and Ronnie of course.
Next week the GT's and Can Ams....mental note to myself " make sure you do at least a few laps before then to ensure that you have a driveable car!!..you muppet!!""

I had two very enjoyable races. There was lots of close racing, and very little room to overtake. The set-ups that I used were very similar to the default. They had a little understeer, but they were very forgiving if I went into a corner too fast.
Unfortunately, I missed the start of the F2 race due to a bathroom break  :-[. I started from the pit lane, and I wasn't too far behind. After several laps, I was able to overtake Rainier down the straight. Then I saw him lose control going into the kink. I did not know if I had braked too early and messed up his corner entry. So I backed off to give the position back. I tried to watch the replay twice, but it froze both times. I had a lot of fun chasing Dave C. and Rainier.  
The second race was a blast. The Matra MS80 did not disappoint! I had some of my closest racing with Axel and Andreas. I tried pulling along side Axel twice, and I thought that I had bumped him once. So I watched the replay, and it appears that I narrowly avoided contact. Then Axel caught up with Andreas. I did not know if I should back off a bit to let them have their own battle, or to keep applying pressure from behind. I decided to keep applying pressure, and was only able to overtake Axel after he had some wheel spin or oversteer. Overall, I had a great time, and I look forward to the next one.

Thanks Walter ! You didn't make any mistake, it was my fault.
I was in total fight with Dave C for this race and also for the championship, so I did not give you the position back even if you did no mistake.
You are a real gentleman/sportsman but next time I think you'd better to continue and let the moderator determine your responsibility.

That was good fun.  I've been out of it for a few months, and the F2 scramble into turn 1 was a bit of an eye-opener for me.  I spun out of the way and spent the rest of the race trying to find a rhythm.  I had sort of forgotten about the 69x race, and didn't know which car to pick.  When I saw everyone else using the BRM I figured I'd follow suit.  Never driven it before so I made a guess of the setup based on some recent Matra testing at Rouen, and amazingly the car seemed fairly settled.  Won the race due to profiting from other people making errors.  I kind of like the track, the long left hander is a treat.
