Season 19 Amateurs Trophy - Round 9 - Zeltweg

The Zeltweg Airfield was used for a Formula One Grand Prix as early as 1964, but we are racing at the nearby Österreichring where races were held from 1970 to 1987 and from 1997 to 2003 before the track was dismantled for refurbishing.

Please note we are using the recent 1971 version with improved graphics. (zeltw71)

Reserve drivers should not join until there are only 30 mins of qualifying left.  However, all drivers should not go on track until there is 30 minutes of qualifying left.  This helps all drivers join the server successfully.  Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Don't forget to use the updated 65 mod for this race.

Please be in the IGOR UKGPL chatroom by 8:55 p.m.
(You will need to set up a channel called #ukgpl if you haven't already done so)

Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=247&theme=6)

We have split the cars into groups based on average performance and split the drivers into groups based on average ability. The chassis numbers for Amateurs are as follows:

AMATEUR CHASSIS GROUPS
1 - Lotus, Ferrari
2 - BRM, Honda
3 - BT11
4 - Cooper
5 - BT7

Each driver has been given a seeding number and must pick a chassis with either an equal number or higher number but not a lower number. For example, if a driver is given a seeding of 2, he must pick one of the cars in group 2 (BRM or Honda) but if he would prefer to drive either the BT11, Cooper or BT7 he may do so. This means that a driver given a seeding of 1 can pick any chassis he prefers.

**NOTE**
Whichever chassis a driver begins his first race with is the chassis he must use for the remainder of the season unless a change has been agreed with the moderator.

The following drivers have made their chassis choice:

26 laps.  I've updated the announcement but for future reference I posted all the race lengths on the registration page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=7571) (for the mods benefit really never expected the drivers to find their way there)

La race de miserable. Quali OK, start no good but, after some trouble ahead, Nicky invited me on a duel and then I got screen freeze. End of story.

Grats winners and podium.

La race de miserable pour moi aussi... Phil went off at Bosch Kurve on lap 2 but bounced off the barriers & snagged my car as I went past on the inside - unfortunately then an unsighted Bernie ploughed into our stationary cars. After that my car was a complete & utter wreck - suspension bent so bad it would snap sideways all over the place. Decided to carry on anyway as it was quite fun trying to control the damaged car but knew I'd be consigned to last place. Zut alors.

Having spent the last week cruising around the IOM at speeds up to an amazing 8 knots it was something of a culture shock to be strapped into the Lotus for the Osteriechring .

I knew Phil was up for it the way he took off like a scalded cat when the flag dropped  , didn't think I would see him again so soon

Sorry about the T bone , the corner made it unsighted and before I knew it I had slammed into the pile up  :-\  then I was amazed to find I had no damage to report ,  but I was slow as a slow thing and dropped back from the rest of the field , eventually I got lapped by Hristo  ( no shame in that though )

Regarding the pile up , you guys really should take more care you know and always remember "Motor Racing" can be "Dangerous"   ;) ;) ;)

Apart from  the crash , I quite enjoyed my nice sunday drive  :)

Did qually on race fuel because I was checking tyre temps (front left was getting mighty hot).  So when the flag dropped I was hoping to be able to stay with the pack which I did thanks to a decent draft.  There was a bit of scrap ahead of me as we started lap 2 which slowed a few people down and I managed to pick up 3 places through T1 and T2.  On the run down to the Bosch Kurve I could hear a car very close but I couldn't see it in my mirrors so I didn't know which side of the track to head for.  I usually enter Bosch from the right but I couldn't be sure there was space there so stayed further left than usual.  This turned out to be a big mistake.  The different line meant I clipped the concrete rumble strip on the inside which upset the car and I ended up crashing into the outer wall.  Thankfully most people got past OK but Bernie couldn't avoid me and Al, sorry about that guys.

Grats to Hrsito and Tim and commiserations to Tom who was pulling along a three car train for the first few laps before running wide at T2.

That left Hristo ( who else??) in the lead, closely followed by Tim ( who also might have taken the lead ) and yours truly tagging along behind ;D. The rest of the race was a slipstream fest between the BT7's and my Cooper.
I was happy to sit back and be dragged along by Hristo and Tim for the first half of the race, but then Tim decided that I should do some work and feigned an off at T2, forcing me into 2nd spot and the chase after Hristo who had eaked out a couple of seconds lead.
Always willing to do my bit ( well when my arm is twisted a long way up my back ::) ) I started the painfully slow process of reeling Hristo in. It took a good few laps and almost ended in disaster at T1 when I gave the wooden fence on the outside the lightest of kisses on twop consecutive laps. OK, one of the "kisses" was more of a lip crushing snog...with tongues, but I survived it, although not without some damage to the directional stability under braking mechanism. Tim also discovered this damage when I braked the next time for T2!! I think he took a short excursion onto the grass  :o
It took me a lap to understand the problem and drive around it, before concentrating on closing down Hristo. As a result of his diversion Tim had fallen back and the gap was growing by a tenth about every 2 laps, just as the gap to Hristo came down by the same amount.

Just as I got close enough and began to pick up a strong tow from Hristo, stretching the gap back to Tim to a beyond slipstream distance ( it seemed) , Hristo slowed to let me pass thinking that I was in a quicker car and would pull him along........I mean?? really??!! :-\  It was honestly the slipstream that had pulled me up so quickly once I was in range.
My gearing was all set up for slipstream and  was far from ideal for leading a race which was quickly obvious when Tim caught us and Hrsito launched himself past me again. :o
The rest of the race was a cat and mouse battle between Tim and myself that allowed Hristo to ease away to a clear win. A couple of corners side by side with Tim at full throttle in the closing laps, but I still could not force my way into 2nd without risking both our races.
3rd was more than I had expected against some of the faster chassis around Zeltweg, and the race was FAR more fun than I had anticipated. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Was surprised to qual 3rd but remembered too late that 1st was too tall, so bogged off the line (issue with using someone else's setup).  Started to catch the leaders but made a mistake and let nicky through.  Nicky then got onto the grass and I went for a pass into the final corner.  We made contact, cars dissappeared then reappeared, thought I'd got alongside enough but probably was still slightly behind. Anyways, sorry for my part in the contact, it looked like we could both continue...well in my case for a couple of laps, then I lost connection, d@mn it!  Two races on the bounce, may need to check out my German tinternet

Wow! What a race  ;D

Wasn't expecting much here as I consider Zeltweg a power circuit so was very happily supprised to qualify so highly once I put a clean lap in.

Was equally suprised when Hristo managed a good enough start to prevent me from passing him off the line  :P

I think Clive's description covers most of my race aswell, especially my brown trousers moment over his early and wobbly entry into the hairpin. I have no idea how we missed as I barely had time to swerve onto the grass, where I then did maybe half the corner on the fence as the grass prevented me from slowing in time. Somehow I kept all my wheels and didn't do any noticable damage so rejoined behind a slightly erratic Clive. Aslong as he was within Hristo's slipstream I had no way past, as whenever I pulled out I lost the tow while Clive was still being pulled along by H.
Just as I was getting frustrated the 2 of us managed some perfectly choreographed offs, skids, and assorted mistakes which allowed H to bugger off and leave us at long last. Once out of the draft Clive was finally vunerable to my assaults and I got past.
Clive took the strategic approach of waiting until the last couple of laps before making his move, which I was determined to prevent as I needed to beat him to keep my championship chances  live.
The final lap was spent in full on battle right up to the last corner where Clive got too sideways (as usual  ;D ) and lost ground on me allowing me to cross the line almost a second clear.
An excellent fun battle for the entire race for me  :fencing:

I did a spot of calculating yesterday and if my counting on fingers is right, Tuesdays result has secured my 3rd Am's championship (assuming I don't get moderatorized for anything)  ;D

God knows how I'm going to to it again if I'm still in the BT7!

Championship chances alive? You're leading by nearly 100 points!  ::)

I had a so-so race as there were some issues early on with Tom, who (after taking pole by more than half a second) was not so fast on race fuel and the worst thing was he went into defense mode right from the start.

That led to a few hairy moments where I had to avoid having by frontend cut off and also back off much earlier before corners for the lack of good lines behind him. All that allowed the rest to keep up and attack me, which wasn't hard at all considering the lack of power of the BT7.

After a couple of laps I found myself in the lead and Tom, who had dropped behind a bit, was making up his move to retake the lead and did so at T1 on lap 7. I won't discuss what happened next, it's up to the admins to figure it out. I'll just say that's it's sad some people think they can get away with aggressive driving but act as a victim when someone else does it to them in return.

Evil was very strong behind and I didn't think slipstream was such a factor because he wasn't that close. Tim was equally as fast, but had some problems and lost some time. Evil was taking up a couple of tenths on each lap and so I didn't resist much when he went for a pass, thinking he was at least as fast as me so we could pull each other in the remaining laps.

That wasn't the case though because as soon as he went in the lead, he lost speed and I had no choice but to attack him again. It was a bit close going side by side into the last corner, but somehow we made it through without contact.

In the remainder of the race I just drove my own pace and built up a gap back to Evil and Tim who both lost time because of their scrap and eventually dropped out of sight.

Had a good race until I got knocked out of H on lap 7 in the first long righthander. I didn t know defending my position was illegal. I claimed my line when I could and gave way when I had too .Required lots of concentretion with H glued behind me /in blindspot and the overall speed was not to high because of it.Had H behind me 1 st lap then he dropped back after going wide in last turn .think it was back on lap 5 he made contact and we changed position couple of times (and some fistwaving included).after I was in the wall I lost engine power and limped around the remaining laps to a 6 th place.
