Title: UKGPL Season 39 (Autumn 2021) 1971 Can-Am - Daytona - Sep 10 Post by: Cookie on September 05, 2021, 03:11:14 PM +0100 Season 39 - CANM71 – Round 1 – Daytona Road Circuit
Something a bit different for the first Round, the Daytona International Speedway at Daytona Beach, Florida. The venue is famous for the oval used for the prestigious Daytona 500 NASCAR race. We will use the sports car course which combines high speed oval racing with big 180 degree turns often seen on US tracks. Remember the start is not the finish line - your lap counts when you are just leaving the oval part of the track. Look for Front Stretch ;) (https://i.ibb.co/9gZxZc5/dayto24h.jpg) (https://imgbb.com/) Please check the Season 39 pages for details (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=1531&theme=6) regarding rules and the CanAm 1971 pages (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=1611&theme=6) in particular. Handicapping The cars will be divided into five groups, each group containing cars of similar performance. Drivers will be graded as either "Professional", "Intermediate" or "Amateur". Drivers will be limited to cars from specific groups based on their grade and must choose 2 cars and drive them an equal number of times. Rolling Start! In RL CanAm started rolling ;) We do a rolling start to the exit of T1 in one line following the polesetter ~100mph Incidents will not be moderated as we race as gentlemen. One Shift-R is allowed with no need to make Stop & Go.
Drivers will be graded as either "Professional", "Intermediate" or "Amateur". You can drive all cars but the 2 supercars, a Porsche e.g. is very smooth to drive. I tend to drive them like the 55s... smoothly and gently on the gas. Please join us as you're not alone in finding them a challenge.

I tend to drive them like the 55s... smoothly and gently on the gas. Please join us as you're not alone in finding them a challenge. I agree that these cars are a challenge Phillipe. Probably the most powerful cars that we have in GPL. Just as in real life they have far more power than the tyres can hope to contain ( except the Porsche, but even that car is powerful ). The biggest problem with the default settings that I get is snap oversteer out of corners, so either try a higher gear ( maybe 2nd instead of 1st? ) or change your gearbox ratios so that it limits the sudden surge of power. Braking early is to be recommended, as the speed of these monsters is deceptive and running too deep and wide is easy. These cars have enormous torque and avoiding wheelspin out of slow corners is the secret, just as was required in real life. Once the car is straightened up you can pour in the gas and hold on tight, because the horizon will be pulled towards you very quickly :o. PS. I will be testing the Porsche later and if I can build a safe setup, I am happy to share it with anyone who is struggling. I also have an old setup for the Ferrari which is good for 1:42 lap? with some work it might be a little faster? and I am also going to test the Lola 222. I am limited to the 3 slower groups and presumably the less powerful cars, but there is not that much difference? But, as Axel suggests, maybe select a car with less torque that is comfortable to drive? because for sure there will be many retirements with bent cars and simply finishing will be a success. Philippe, I've tried some laps in the Porsche and it's great. As Evil suggests, go easy on the throttle and brake early. I was getting 1:42s in no time at all. You'll easily be able to do it with your driving talent. I made some mistakes but could recover quickly, that was a very entertaining way to race - action in all laps ;D Title: Re: UKGPL Season 39 (Autumn 2021) 1971 Can-Am - Daytona - Sep 10 Post by: Doni Yourth on September 11, 2021, 12:01:08 AM +0100 Congratulations to our podium finishers! Well done, lads.
A couple of goofy errors put me well behind. Dead last at one point. Managed to pick up the pieces and gain some places thanks to the misfortune of others chief amongst those being Fulvio with a last-lap reset. Bad luck there to say the least. Hoping for a better run at Spa. Note for Philippe... Please keep your position on pace laps. You were supposed to start behind me. I had to make a shiftR after my engine broke for some reason that I do not know ... it was not too high in temperature and I did not have not (I think) pushed too high in the towers! The start of the race was much less easy than during my private practice !! But after having benefited from a few incidents, I am 3rd until my engine breaks ... the time to realize that I can use the shiftR ::), I go down to 7 or 8! A little distracted, the rest of the race will not be easy despite the power of the Lola (probably the setup to review!) some fights short ... a lot of tension with these cars :) Maybe to reread the starting procedure ... it seems to me that the first one (s) left well above 100mph and well in front, causing the rest of the conquerors to be largely stretched ... (not really important concerning my classification ;)! but just for the respect of the procedure ;)) Title: Re: UKGPL Season 39 (Autumn 2021) 1971 Can-Am - Daytona - Sep 10 Post by: Philippe Girard on September 11, 2021, 09:49:31 AM +0100 I'm sorry Doni.
In any case, I stop this mod, because I cannot driving correctly this cars. I'm too slow, I don't know why? I'm sorry. With sport cars, I'm enjoy.. I prefer making concentration on mods 67, 68, F2, 69... Title: Re: UKGPL Season 39 (Autumn 2021) 1971 Can-Am - Daytona - Sep 10 Post by: Pete Bennett on September 11, 2021, 11:16:12 AM +0100 Wow! What a lot of fun.
I was pleased to Q 4th in the Shadow. One of the Lolas got away quickly before remembering the rolling start. Alain, I think it was you so thanks for dropping back and giving me the position back. First couple of laps were mighty fast and I had a good battle with Cookie before he lost control and then had to crawl his way back up the field. I had no chance of catching Yannick - he's in a league of his own in these cars. Cookie caught me in the closing stages and he easily slipped past to take the 2nd spot on the podium. I could see others not far behind on Prib so I was pleased to hang onto 3rd spot for the chequered flag. A great start to the season for me. See you all next time. What a blast, thanks for organising this season! I got a bit confused with the rolling start mentioning 'to the exit of turn 1', which to me translated to the turn as shown on the track map and keeping a speed of 100mph. Tristan in front of me already went full throttle after exiting the banked corner (8/9) and in the confusion I reluctantly went with him but I feel like things didn't really go as intended. ??? Nontheless, I stayed with him and after a lap was on his tail, after which he missed the braking point of T1 and giving me free way for the rest of the race, I pretty much drove my own tempo throughout. The finish was pretty confusing so I did an extra lap just to be sure. See you next race. Hi Pete, It wasn't me but Enrique I believe ;) Title: Re: UKGPL Season 39 (Autumn 2021) 1971 Can-Am - Daytona - Sep 10 Post by: Enrique Farina on September 13, 2021, 04:34:52 AM +0100 Actually a surprise race for me, as you know very well here in Mexico, the races are at 3 in the afternoon (15.00) and on many occasions I have work, but that day I finished early and I wanted to run and I remembered that ukgpl had a race On Fridays, so I signed up and quickly Axel accepted me, (thanks cookie)
I read the regulations and chose the lola from group c and in the qualy I began to make a set up, which I think was quite good. I was very, very satisfied with my 4th place without having had a previous training and that makes my 4th place taste like a podium. yannick from "ganymedes" axel amazing recovery big aplasued for you pete, great performance, all the race on track thanks budies for that great race and still running in this category Title: Re: UKGPL Season 39 (Autumn 2021) 1971 Can-Am - Daytona - Sep 10 Post by: PaulV on September 13, 2021, 11:13:51 PM +0100 Im confused. I have driven the Porsche. I chose this to try to give myself a stable and sensible car for the first race of the series. it turned out to be hopeless for me. but as I have driven it do I have to keep this now as one of my car choices? as an Amateur, Im guessing a faster car would have been beneficial. thanks, Title: Re: UKGPL Season 39 (Autumn 2021) 1971 Can-Am - Daytona - Sep 10 Post by: Cookie on September 14, 2021, 12:33:48 PM +0100 Im confused. PS Have you withdrawn your participation from the 69 series? Title: Re: UKGPL Season 39 (Autumn 2021) 1971 Can-Am - Daytona - Sep 10 Post by: PaulV on September 15, 2021, 09:57:19 AM +0100 Hi Cookie,
Yes I have withdrawn from the 68s and the 69x. I'm not getting enough time at present to practice and I'm just not fast enough at present to enjoy the racing. I always feel as if I'm in everyone's way.. lol. Its not really much fun being lapped every race and just driving at the back all the time. I think I signed up for too much this season. I really should just do the 67s as a privateer and the F2s. I really enjoy the F2s. I will be making an effort to improve my times and will be faster and more able to run with the pack in the next season. but there are too many of them! Between the proposals here, with GTL too and the outside championships... not enough time and that sometimes spoils the fun. ::) |
