1  Everything Else / Chit Chat / Buying a used car anytime soon? on: October 15, 2012, 11:10:17 PM +0100
I've recently used the Experian Vehicle Check service to check the history of a used car I have bought.  Rather than pay 19.99 for 1 check, I paid 24.99 for 5, just in case.

As it happens, the 1st one I used came back clean and I've bought the car.  This means I have 4 spare checks going.  If anyone wants to make use of them, let me know the vehicle reg and I'll email you the full PDF of the check, free-of-charge.  They are valid for another 50-odd days, so be quick.

I've just been through my annual mid-summer sim-racing sabbatical.  So many other things to do during the nice weather (yeah, I know).

Anyway, I suppose I'll drop back into iR as the nights start drawing in, although it seems harder and harder to pick up where you left off these days.

Can anyone shed any light on what developments have been made in the past 6 months?

4  Everything Else / Chit Chat / Re: ADSL techie help? on: July 09, 2012, 07:53:34 PM +0100
They dont offer fixed speeds as far as i can see but i think if you cant get more than something or other then they might fix it at 2.

I'd be surprised if it's as arbitrary as that; see Kitz for information on how your IP profile is derived from your sync speed. That mentions lines 'stuck' with an IP profile of 2048...

The exchange can put you on a banded profile if you are on ADSL2 equipment.  So if for example the DLM logic thinks the line quality is poor, your sync speed might be capped at between 1-2meg, or 3-6meg for example.  It does this by increasing your noise margin to try and 'drown out' the noise issues that may be causing errors or retrains.  On ADSL2 your sync speed and throughput speed should be very closely aligned, unlike the old IP profiles that are assigned to ADSL1 circuits.

I find speedtest.net can be very hit and miss.  Try www.speedtester.bt.com/beta which seems a tad more reliable (if you can apply that word to a BT product Wink )

As Picnic says, there is a stabilization period that your line needs to go through so expect to see ups and downs over the first week or so.

5  Everything Else / Chit Chat / Re: COME ON ENGLAND on: June 17, 2012, 10:01:35 PM +0100
Thing is, we can't play like Spain and shouldn't try to (much as I'd like us to).  Our game is based on being direct and relies heavily on getting the ball forward and into the box early.

Yes, the win at all costs/win ugly mentality is probably our downfall, but Roy is at least sticking to the principles of the English game and focusing on playing in a manner in which our players are familiar.

We all know it will ultimately end in heartbreak, but if the Sweden game is anything to go by, it certainly won't be a dull ride.

I think we did what we had to do on Monday.  If we'd have played higher up the pitch, France would've carved us open with the likes of Nasri, Ribery, Benzema etc.

I think Roy took a pragmatic approach and a draw was a good result.  To be fair, when we were in possession we looked composed and patient, just a shame the midfield was setup with defending in mind, leaving Welbeck and Young with a lot of work to do up front.

I'll reserve judgement until we are through the next two games.  I'm hopeful we'll be a bit more attacking against Sweden and Ukraine.
7  Everything Else / Chit Chat / Re: Shame I can't get fibre optic broadband here. on: June 01, 2012, 07:40:53 PM +0100

As for remembering the old 0.5Meg service. I do and worse. My parents live in the heart of Kent and ordered ADSL earlier this year. The BT engineer turned up after the usual microfilter self-install failed and simply said "You're having a laugh, who told you that you can get broadband out here". He however did try and reported he could see 200K at the green box, some 2.5K from the premises! So FTTC will not work either.

If your parents cabinet is FTTC enabled Picnic, then a VDSL service of some sort can be probably provided, however, at 2.5km your parents provider and Openreach would have to agree to provide a service lower than the minimum 15meg threshold.  Rough guess would be between 4-6meg, possibly more depending on the type of cable between the cabinet and modem.

You may be able to get upto 80Mb if your exchange and cabinet has been enabled for FTTC.

Stunning details JPS, as always. Shocked Could be a real one with a proper background and soil. Smiley

Just beautiful JPS  I Am Not Worthy

I agree with TT, putting your considerable talents to decorating the background card, perhaps a lonely runway on a hazy spring morning  Cool

The skippy is brilliant again!!

Although you can chuck it around and slides are far easier to predict and catch it really rewards smooth, precise inputs (where I'll find some of those is anyone's guess) but the early signs are very promising.  I must admit when I saw the release notes I was a tad underwhelmed but from what I've experienced of the skippy I think iRacing have taken a considerable stride forward.

Really looking forward to the Club England season now.
15  Everything Else / Chit Chat / Re: Shark spawning alert! on: January 31, 2012, 04:44:46 PM +0000
You may be pleased and proud right now, but give it 3 weeks (by which time you'll be lucky if you've accumulated around 8 hours sleep) and you'll feel a whole lot different.   sleep1

Seriously though, congratulations to you both   punk
