From where I was towards the back of the grid, I could see mayhem developing on the approach to St Devote.
Years of GPL racing makes a guy acutely aware of the potential for a crashfest.
"Too many cars on too little tarmac" I thought and eased back.
Sure enough, someone touched someone else and a chain reaction followed. I picked up about 6 places after I slalomed my way through the wreckage.
The accident after the chicane was unfortunate for me, as I had committed to taking the chicane flat in 5th when I saw cars spinning ahead. There was no way I could stop in time , so I aimed for a gap.........which closed!
.
By some stroke of luck I ended up past the wreckage but facing the wrong way. I grabbed reverse to get away from the broken cars and managed to spin myself around.. I fully expected my car to be bent or broken, but I thought I would do 2 laps before committing to the pits, just to see if it was driveable. The front end felt a little less grippy but other than that the car was OK, so I pressed on.
One by one the leaders dropped out or went into the pits and I climbed the leaderboard to 2nd spot. It lloked like Matt had avoided the lap 1 chaos as he had a huge lead, and my little 1.5 litre just would not close the gap no matter how hard I tried lol.
Grats Matt on the win.
Commiserations to all those who got tangled up on lap 1.
Monaco is an unforgiving track at the best of times and these open wheeled cars are so vulnerable when side by side. In other classes you can rub door handles and live to talk about it in the bar afterwards, but a small misjudgement in these will send someone over the armco.
Hopefully the next track will be a little more open, but maybe we all need to give a little more space for each other in these cars. If you don't survive, you ain't gonna win.
Ok lecture over everyone back to the bar............................
