Title: UKGPL Season 22 (2011-2012) Porsche - Surfers Paradise - Nov 11
Post by: Geoff65 on October 28, 2011, 04:49:57 AM +0100
Season 22 - Porsche Super Cup
Race 1 Surfers Paradise

Welcome to the opening round of the Porsche Super Cup for Season 22. The venue is the wonderful Surfers Paradise layout in sunny (well, most of the time) Queensland. Many of the GP stars were found here through the 60's attending the Tasman Series events, a championship split between Australian and New Zealand tracks and often used by the teams as 'shakedown' races for their new chassis prior to the start of the new European F1 season. The Porsche is great fun to drive here and should provide some cracking racing. However, be aware that it could be a little crowded early on and patience will be a must.

Please check the Season 22 pages for details (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=335&theme=6) regarding rules and the Porsche Super Cup (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=342&theme=6) pages in particular.

The Porsche Super Cup Races will be run across 2 Servers, under Pro rules and will be approximately 50 minutes in length.
Lap 1 will be fully moderated as the lap is short, consequently a 'red zone' is not appropriate, and thereafter will be reported incidents only.

Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R;group=342;theme=6)

There are drivers missing from some teams, unfortunately with a lack of entries for the class, this has become unavoidable. As the season progresses we may pick up enough drivers to fully populate the remaining teams. And rather than tell drivers they can't race, it is fairer to let them form a team, in the hope of filling it properly as we go along.

Hi guys, nice to be with you all for the 2nd year.
These tracks are pretty good and there are a few I've never raced on before.
I've downloaded the Surfers Paradise Base Installation but, I don't know if there are also some more stuff to install on, indeed I've found a .zip file that did not have the installer inside and neither which version it pertains to.
If there is a favorite procedure to get the correct installation, please write it down here.
Thanks to all and...have a nice season with the Porsche Super Cup.

Best regards

The base install is all you need to race with Sergio. All the other stuff is purely window dressing and up to personal taste. The add-ons are not required for the races.

Sergio

You can get a base installer here (http://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/inc_tracksSurfers_js.htm) - just click on the map.

There are add on horizons as well as the main file, which are available here (ftp://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/tracks/surfersparadise) but they are not necessary and I threw them away.

I think he might be right, the layout on Paul's site looks like the modern street track layout, not the 60s version of Surfers which we will be using.

Actually this may be important because the Surfers Paradise on the Track Database is NOT the one we want to use. We need to insure that drivers have inatalled the track on my site and not 'austral' which is buggy,  causes CTD and most importantly of all is a totally different layout.

Is the track we are using on the database yet?

How do you think to manage 13 Teams of 3 pilots = 39 pilots on 2 servers that can contains only 38 pilots ?

We are maxed out at 12 teams and Mark Barresi has resigned from this series which leaves Bob and myself short. Roberto and Piero are unattached and I may not be able to drive - so 36 drivers but let us see who turns up on the night. If we get 36 I will be surprised but pleased.

Oh dear!  Only just read this, was actually thinking we had quite a steal in Mark, thinking he was edging towards pro (he's probably faster than me anyways).  Hmm...so we are in need of an amateur at this very late stage, shame the reserves are so bloody fast!!  If you can't drive tomorrow Paul, we won't have much of a team  ???  Umm....a less than ideal way to start the season, but we live in hope....just about!

Are others allowed to change teams part way through. Thinking of last season when quite a few lost interest.

The main problem here Bob is we got more Pro than Inter or Novice drivers signing up this time round.....and.....basically, there is no-one available to pad out the teams. Many of last seasons competitors have not re-registered to concentrate on other divisions. Fair enough too. Rather than bar drivers that have registered incomplete teams, we may well have to run what we have.....and possibly pick up some new, non-Pro entrants as we go. It's disappointing, but ya just can't polish a t**d. We run as we are for now. Unless there are any other ideas floating around, but with the kickoff tomorrow.....it's a tad late.

Joining direct via IP is fine. Make sure you get the right server though. TBH Not sure which server you need as I can't see you in a team :(

We will sort it out in chat tonight Tom so please still use iGOR to join the pre race chat to ensure we don't get the wrong drivers on the wrong server

Quite an eventful race for me.  Qualified at the back as expected ::).  There were some very quick drivers out there!!

First 15 or so laps were steady, thanks to the slipstream I managed to hang on to the back of the freight train.  Then I had a battle with Evil for a few laps.  I suspect there was something wrong with his car because he gradually dropped down the field until he was just in front of me.  I tried a few places to get by but Clive was making me go the long way round and I just couldn't make a decent attempt at a pass.  But then I managed to get a good exit on the last turn and got along side over the finish line.  Clive had the inside line for the kink and I tried to stay wide but it wasn't a line I had practiced and I clipped the grass.  I did about 4 360s and managed to continue with no damage but by then Clive was long gone.

Then I had a dice with Johnny O  :).  We swapped places a couple of times and at one stage I passed him under yellow flags, at least I think I did, I didn't see any flags but there was a car stuck on the track just after I got past so there should have been flags.  Anyway I pulled over onto the grass to let Johnny retake the place.  A few laps later I got past again but before long the leaders were on us and I pulled over to let them through.  I didn't realise the third car was Johnny and so I ended up behind him again!  After a while I got past again but ended up going wide on the exit of T5 which caused me to get into a massive "tank slapper" and I couldn't regain control and ended up marooned on the track on the exit of T6.  At that point Johnny came round the corner and had nowhere to go.  A collision was unavoidable and unfortunately I ended up on my roof and couldn't continue.  Thankfully Johnny could.

Grats to the leaders, they were very quick.  Unlucky Arf Arf Arf,  I saw you spin and you must not have been able to continue (I noticed you disconnected slightly later).  Don't know what happened to Fran.  I think Pastit Porsche will do better next time  :scooter:

Server 1 and Server 2 are just the same. The reason that Server 1 is posted second is that it takes longer for me to download the data from T7. I don't think it is the most important thing in the world.

Would all drivers PLEASE ensure that they read the race posts carefully. There was some confusion about which server was which and what the passwords were but the passwords are different so that you can be certain you are joining the right server - please ensure you know which server you are meant to join (it will change race by race) and what the relevant password is. I don't mind setting this up and modding it but it would be helpful if you could all come prepared. Pens, paper and set square!

Hi Nicky,

Where did you get the car graphics from that are in your photo album? They certainly look a lot better than the all white cars  ;D

I found server 1 to be quite good, from here in Oz at least, that was a concern I had when I joined the series, I know how a bad connection can make the racing quite unpleasant, there were only 1 or 2 cars with bad lag, which made getting past iffy.
I'll second Svenvangent's comments regarding the drivers being lapped, they did a great job of letting the guys through, thanks  :)

See you all in South Africa

Cheers,
Ron.

I had a long and quiet race. I don't say as usual because in the past I've had my share of accidents with stressed pilots who don't realize I'm actually moving .
My main concern was to stay out of what most of you guys see as your private Path to Glory. I got exhausted at some time by the endless calculations that come with racing : "considering his speed, mine and the probability to hit a Kanguroo, when will I see him again and how many times  will I have this opportunity ? "

Exhausted, yes, but not completely unconscious.  I do remember completing the race . I did see  Tristan smoke his tires in front of a rather indifferent crowd .
You can imagine the look on my face when I read "disco" on the report table.  I'm still in shock .  How will I stand the look of my children, their eyes getting slowly filled with tears finally overflowing  over the remote control of their Playstation ? How ?

Exhausted, yes, but not completely unconscious.  I do remember completing the race . I did see  Tristan smoke his tires in front of a rather indifferent crowd .
You can imagine the look on my face when I read "disco" on the report table.  I'm still in shock .  How will I stand the look of my children, their eyes getting slowly filled with tears finally overflowing  over the remote control of their Playstation ? How ?

Hey Pierre
don't bother about that "disco" (disconnected), GPL does this as you were 5 laps down, this does not mean you are disqualified  ;)

Hmm Pierre - I have been to quite a lot od Discos with GPL - See you in there at Mexico ;)

Replays are up on the UKGPL3 website under the Porsche Super Cup (http://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/inc_replaysS22_js.htm)

Please check the tables and let me know if you believe ther to be any errors. With remapping the teams and two servers, importing the results correctly is a bit of a black art...

Thanks to Cookie for pointing out an error - it has been rectified hopefully.

Sorry team
Had a warp/invisible-car crash near the start and after a few guard-rail encounters the engine finally blew up

Despite yet another engine failure in a Porsche I really enjoy this track. Great high pressure cat and mouse race chasing Axel round the track. Sorry about the coming together, my fault. I waited, hoping you would be good to go as I did not want to inherit the position like that. As you set off again I settled in behind only to blow my engine as we came round to start the next lap. Great driving and I'm glad to see you finished on the podium.

Apologies to my team mates Geoff and Al, for my engine failure but I sense you had your woes as well, better luck next time guys.

 I'm sorry Blito.

Don't be daft! You made a prefectly legal move. I just failed to see you make it ! Lets blame the cars appalling lack of rear vision!

To be honest , I cant trace back where I got those painted Porsches from  .
Some updates , here and there , at SRMZ and , myself , I did some simple painting to every single Porsche appears inside dat.file , at early stage after release of the GTmod.

So quit an confusingly mixture .
Well , I can upload my whole Posche folder . BUT atm I wouldn’t recommend to use , cause :

FIRST TIME EVER , I got some Porsches with unclear front windows , during online race !!!
( unfortunately the one I was in comes even with red shimmery left side windows ) .

Sorry for my team mates, Evil and Miniblood, I made a really bad race  :-[
Surfer's Paradise is Racer's Hell for me after my bad results in GT and Porsche Cup !

I hope it will be better in East London ...
East London and Surfer's Paradise are same kind of tracks : long straight followed by a difficult and quick right turn and then several turns like esses. So I m not so confident  :-\

Congratulations to Tristan and Maxime : la patrie est fière de vous/our country is proud of you, still another race like that and you'll get the Legion d'honneur  :D
Congratulations to Axel for his third place, and to all finishers !

Hi guys !  .. ;D...was a realy good race with 36 laps with intence fights.....
Second on the grid I miss my start at the green flag and lost 2 places ..... and then the 6 first laps was really fun , and with those 3 porsche ahead of me was a very nice show .....so Sergio was leading, chased by Evil ,Raoni and me....but unfortunatly , at the lap 6 , Raoni touch the rear of Evil'car who just fly out of the track :o .....I find a way between thoses cars and take the second place .....then start a regular chase on Sergio ....I finally joint him at the lap 14 , and put a maximum pressure on him .....he go out of track at lap 15 and come back on track in third position .....then , it's Raoni who chased me 1 or 2s behind me......Ihad need all my concentration to keep the gap between us....finaly , Raoni miss the T1 and lost a weel ....." la messe est dite ! "....and Ifinish the 7 last laps a little alone .....
congratulation to my team ....Max cross the line at a very good second place and Pierre finish 7 !  ......" bravo les gars :) "
....thx to the org. and all pilotes....

Well, I began with JonnyO's wonderfull set of brasilian Porsches. This works fine, but in some cars the side windows got a little color too.

When I got a "patch" for clean Porsche windows, I found out that there are different versions!
First one just removes all glas from the car!
When I posted them in SRMZ, Ginetto posted his version with clean glas. But I learned, they do not work with this colored car set!

So I decided to just use the standard dull cars, to have the clean windshield  ;)

It was a great race.

During the first few laps, I was under the pressure of Arf × 3 before he disappears ...   :o
Then I ran into Sergio. Good fight for a few laps, very fine defense  ;), but unfortunately we hit ourselves, on the long left corner. Fifty - fifty I think. But I was luckier than him. Sorry.  :-\

I benefit from the problems of the leaders to finish second, great result with Tristan first  8) ! And Pierre makes the job of rallying the finish  ;) ! Great team, guys !   ;D

The dirty windscreen is caused by dirt.  The dirt must be on an online carskin, which you've not driven until now.  The red side window must be blood, caused by the dirty front window?

To fix this, look at the car number in the replay.  Next, go find that skin in your Porsche folder - you should see the problem there.  Cut the roof from another car, and paste it, with it's good windows, onto the crime scene.  Once finished, you'll need to find another excuse for more blood. :scared:

Then I had a battle with Evil for a few laps.  I suspect there was something wrong with his car because he gradually dropped down the field until he was just in front of me.  I tried a few places to get by but Clive was making me go the long way round and I just couldn't make a decent attempt at a pass.  But then I managed to get a good exit on the last turn and got along side over the finish line.  Clive had the inside line for the kink and I tried to stay wide but it wasn't a line I had practiced and I clipped the grass.  I did about 4 360s and managed to continue with no damage but by then Clive was long gone.

Sorry to be so defensive Phil  ::). But after I got punted over the armco on lap 6 my car was way down on power and I was only just getting into 5th at the very end of the S/F straight. I was driving all the twisty bits by trying to carry as much speed as I could through all corners just to keep my laptimes reasonable. I felt sure that once you nailed the final 2 corners and came onto the straight in my slipstream it would all be over. So. the only thing I could do was move across early and make you go the long way around. Incidentally, I was also trying to protect Dave Rainier ( my team mate) who for the first part of our battle was just ahead of me. I did wonder if there had been some warp contact when you went off as you were momentarily out of view in my mirrors even though I tried to hold a tight inside line around T1.

After your "incident" I was pretty much on my own until the last few laps when I suddenly came upon Ronnie and Axel recovering from their accident. Ronnie promptly threw several pistons at me as we turned onto the main straight and a lap or so later Axel decided to trim the grass.
A lap or two later, Tristan came past with Raonni in hot pursuit. I tried to follow but the lack of speed on the straight meant I was dropping back steadily until Raonni went off rather spectacularly at T1, Suddenly I realise that I was on for 3rd place and a podium place!!! :o :o :o. with only about 5 laps to go. I had almost given up at half distance because the car was so down on power, that I felt I could not hope race anyone and would probably be in the way. But I struggled on for the Wazas.

I knew that I had to unlap myself from Raonni who was now limping around in his 3 wheeled Porker to claim that 3rd place, so I kept the pace up after I had passed Axel and son ha my sweaty hands on that 3rd place.....
Then I think, the strain of pushing that damaged engine to the limit for 30 odd laps took its toll and there was a sudden silence on the main straight  :'( with 2 laps to go.

Grats to Tristran and Sergio maybe next time I can give you something to race against. Also to Cookie and Jonny who just about held their cars together to claim well deserved points.

I hope we keep the teams together and continue to get full grids for these races. I think the Wazas might need some secret training in survival techniques so that we can collect more points  ;)

Quali
I was a little under pressure cause when I entered the server there were only 29 minutes left...
The first 2 stints were not satisfiying as my times were far from my possibilities!
So I did my 3rd stint knowing it will be the last lap. Yep, it was! 3rd race this season I managed this!

Race
Starting from 9th, my good start made me 7th after T1  ;D
I followed Arf and had Ronnie behind me. After some laps Arf had managed to pass Max who was holding us up a little in these first laps.
When I was preparing my move to Max, Clive came out of the hill between T4/5 and rejoined between.
Clives engine obviously had a damage, what gave Max the chance to to increase the gap to me and I had no longer his tow.... :-[
I had all the time Ray in my rear window and we had a phantastic battle running which kept my adrenaline on high level.
Each time I had made the gap to a more save, I met Pierre in the last sector, what made it easier for Ray to come close again   >:(
Quote
Not your fault Pierre!
You only happened to be there, you did your best to keep out of the way...

Quote
I just reviewed our battle Ray: phantastic! maximum FUN!
My early braking must have given you lots of adrenaline ;D
In lap 36 Ray just kissed my back into T4 and made me spin around and touch the armco.
Quote
No bad feelings about that Ray! ;) Your damage was worse! And you were a gentleman to let me recover in front!
But Clive had passed us and I had gotten an engine damage that seemed not to be as bad as Clives.
So I was chasing Clive, who had lots of laps more experience with his six or seven cylinder engine ;D
Sorry for him as his engine exploded prior to mine, which did it in the last lap after T2 and let me rolling up to T5, where I finished the race in 3rd position...

Sorry for the bad luck of my teammates of the SHADOWS, Sergio and Jason. But there are 9 more races to come!

No problem Clive, you were driving defensively but totally fair and within the rules (no weaving or blocking).  I had a look at my spin on replay, there was no warp I just gave you far too much room.  I simply clipped the grass with my rear wheel and it was curtains after that.  Next time I'll have to practice the move a few times, if I ever get the chance to attack you again that is ::).  It was just as I thought, if you hadn't had engine trouble I'd have been nowhere near you :(

OK guys, it should seem a very good championship start up for me and our Team Shadows and my lap times with car unloaded for qually were interesting as well (I had 1:09:50 in BC and I've tried the qually car for no more than 15 laps in total). Anyway I was surprised for my Pole lap time made just in 4 o 5 laps, but...this is the strange of GPL. I've spent lot of time in practicing and I had my best lap times around 1:10.40 during the very beginning laps with my Porsche full loaded for GP but, unfortunately, I was not able to repeat these lap times when the race started, maybe because I was not properly relaxed. Anyway and watching the replay, I can say that my driving was good if not enough for the 1st final place at least like consistency and smoothness that for me is a good thing.

Race:
After the green flag I've taken a good pace that permitted me to stay for a few laps in 1st position and making me control in the rear view mirror Evilclive that was getting closer and farther several times until he disappeared from my mirror. In 1 or 2 laps pribluda told me Tristan was closing fast on me and so I begun to watch in the mirror a little to often, so often that this has been the cause of my 1st incident at T3L. I had to protect my 1st place several times and, correctly Tristan raised his foot avoiding any contact but at T3L I've seen him in the mirror getting in the belly side on the Left so, thinking he was trying to overtake me, I switched to the front view a little too late steering a little bit too late just to leave him the necessary room and loosing completely the racing line without slowing down my speed consequently, and that has been the mistake. I literally took off catapulting from the hill used like a sky jump on an aircraft carrier  ::) :P . When I got landed and regained the track in 3rd place (I think), there was suddenly the feeling that something was no more properly functioning like before. Instead I thought some of my pistons remained where I've landed so I was no more able to get full speed and, aware of this, I begun to stretch the gears at max revs to loose the minimum speed possible. That was what I could make but I had almost 15 kph less than my chaser Max Lenclen that caught me in a few laps. I've tried to protect my place a few times but I knew he could easily overtake me along the straight and instead he decided to attack me at T3L (again) while I was protecting the internal side of the left turn. He passed between me and the grass but unfortunately since I was convinced that he would not have never tried to overtake me in that point of the track that means internal so I've steered at turn entry to gain the apex but...Max were already there and...boom!!! I've finished my race almost in the same point I've landed in the previous incident and...Game Over !

Joking with Axel in a chat after the race and considering also the race of Jason, I said, if UKGPL will organize a championship for pilots rearended or pilots spun off...we certainly will win it.  ::) :P ;D

A special thanks to our team mate Axel who saved all of us Shadows gaining the first points. Well done Axel.

Axel tried to convince me not to take any action or claim for my second incident with Max because for him it is due to a warp, I instead thought at a similar situation in which I've got a penalty (Brands Hatch season 21). In that race in such a very similar situation I've got a "very ambitious overtake" penalty.

I'm not happy to make a claim at 1st race but, this will be my next action.

See you all at East London.

My race started off pretty good and progressively got worse.  I held 3rd for the first couple of laps then Tom handed me 2nd as he spun.  I maintained this position as we started to lap people.  The first few I managed to lap without issue, but then I had a few dicey moments.  Have to say sorry to Natan, looking at the replay I gave you a rather solid hit into turn 2 as you slid wide, which left you facing the other way...I expected you to keep to the inside.

I then had a few incidents as I struggled to maintain concentration and progressively slipped down the order.  I was about a second slower mid race than I was at the start, possibly due my poor concentration, or perhaps the knocks had taken their toll on my Porsche.  With about 8 to go I kissed a polo rather too enthusiastically and thought I'd ripped a wheel off. Must have just bent summat though and after considering parking it I managed to bring it home without losing any more positions.

Plenty of room for improvement!

Congrats once more to podium, you guys drove well.

Bob.

I must correct my previous post.
Like I wrote, I would have sent a claim for the incident with Max Lenclen but, my replay is a little bit different from the one on server2, in wich  results Max was already well overlapped to me (like Axel previously said to me having already watched the Server's replay) a few meters before T3L entry point. He was beside me and faster than me, so when I steered to the left, I've hit his back right wheel loosing control of my car and ending my race upside down and almost ruining also his race.
I've been the cause of my incident and also his one.

Sorry for my bad move.
I was convinced the event has happened meters ahead (at least it seems so from my replay), so I was not understanding why Axel told me to give up.
Thanks to Axel again and sorry to Max.

Over and out !
