Title: UKGPL Season 22 (2011-2012) Intermediate (65) - Surfers Paradise - Nov 8
Post by: BadBlood on November 03, 2011, 01:49:23 PM +0000
UKGPL Season 22 65 Intermediates Trophy
Race 1 Surfers Paradise

Welcome to the opening round of the Intermediates Trophy for Season 22. This promises to be a hard fought series. Good luck to all.

The venue for our first race is the wonderful Surfers Paradise track in sunny Queensland. Many of the GP stars were found here through the 60's attending the Tasman Series events, a championship split between Australian and New Zealand tracks and often used by the teams as 'shakedown' races for their new chassis prior to the start of the new European F1 season. The 65 is well suited to this short track and should provide some close racing. However, be aware that it could be a little crowded early on and patience will be a must. Although we are not fully moderating the race, in view of the short length of the circuit the first two laps will be fully reviewed.

Thanks to Geoff for the background info.

Download the circuit here (http://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/inc_tracksSurfers_js.htm)

Please check the Season 22 pages for details (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=335&theme=6) regarding rules and the Intermediates Trophy (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=347&theme=6) pages in particular.

Bernie I put you in Group 3 because you were racing with the pros in S21.

To race at Surfers Paradise with a BT11 seems not to be a big handycap imo.

Please give us 2-3 races to have a look at the grouping again...

PS
After a consulting with my comoderator we decided to give you a group 2

I am very honoured to see myself in the G3  ;D
even if I am not sure at all to be faster than Cookie and JonnyO (season21 novice champion) with an equal car !

But I am okay, I take that like a real challenge, and we will see after 2 or 3 races if I still have a chance to follow the leaders...

Do we have to stick with one chassis throughout the season or is it a free choice of any chassis in the group (mixture) ?

Yes Ivandjj, this is Henri Pescarolo and his Alfa Romeo TT33/3 when he hit the concrete wall in Montlhery (for the 1000 km de Paris 1971) during the warming lap ...just in front of me !!
the helmet is green of course, not blue.

You can see beautiful pictures of this race, here ==> http://memoiresdestands.hautetfort.com/archive/2009/03/30/se-souvenir-de-montlhery-5-1000-km-de-paris-1971.html (http://memoiresdestands.hautetfort.com/archive/2009/03/30/se-souvenir-de-montlhery-5-1000-km-de-paris-1971.html)

Yeah!
I was a fan of Chris Amon since I saw him racing in a F2 Ferrari in Hockenheim . after a crash in lap 1 he rolled up the whole field and finished 3rd!

damn screen freeze with a lap and a half left, just as I was closing a race long gap to Axel! Grrrrrrr

Well driven Axel, really was flat out trying to get near you.

Like at Aintree, I was hit by another car on my rear left wheel at the fisrt turn of the first lap !
I made a bad start and Axel overtook me and at turn 1 I had to brake hard to avoid a collision with him, ...and it was Skymole's car who hit my Brabham !

Then I had a hard race on a track where overtaking is very difficult.
The most difficult to overtake was Martin Hunt, two times I spun when triying to pass him on the esses.
Moreover, he was lagging (his car disappeared regularly from my screen).

Qualified 2nd and tried really hard to knock RP off the top step...but the combination of traffic in the wrong places and stuid mistakes meant .....well, still 2nd.  :-\
Got a good start in the race and then managed to hit the shift bar with my hand, short shifting me from 2nd to 3rd way too early and lost all the momentum I'd had off the line   >:(
Slotted in behind Ronnie with Steve B1rd all over me like a cheap suit, as the bus was handling like one early on with full fuel and cold tyres. Managed to hold Steve off until he clipped a corner marker on lap 2 or 3 and spun, leaving me to concentrate and settle everything down. Maintained a constant 2 sec gap to Ronnie, but found I could close it up when I needed to. Kept stock of where Cookie was behind me and maintained the distance to Ronnie for most of the race....til a couple of little mistakes slowed me up and let Cookie catch up a little and Ronnie stretch the gap to nearly 6 seconds. Really had to get my head down and started chasing properly with about 5 laps to run. Set the fastest lap on #29 and pulled in the gap to Ronnie to a whisker over 2 seconds at the finish. Practiced a bit for this race, and it showed I suppose in the pace I could run happily.
Congratulations to Ronnie for his consistent drive and well deserved win. Also Cookie for managing to hold off Steve, until the latter's screen freeze with 1 lap to go.   ???
Thanks also to the few guys we lapped for their excellent track manners. On to Mexico.....

Skymole, did i read somewhere that you drive with keyboard?

I had 2 contacts with skymole at this race. I'm not saying it's all his fault, but both times his car drifted towards outside of the turn and we touched. Looking at replays it didn't seem that he really needed to drift wide when he did. I wonder if thats because of the keyboard controls?

Also, i watched him rejoin from the grass after one of our crashes and his rejoin seemed strangely clumsy, keyboard again?

If it's a keyboard issue, we better make a mental note to allow for keyboard quirks. And perhaps for him to take more care in such situations.

If it's not keyboard, my apologies for wasting pixels.

Otherwise my race wasn't too bad. Shame that most of the midfield close battling group retired early, so there wasn't much for me to do in the 2nd half of the race. Except trying to stay on terms with Du Fossa wich proved impossible despite his delays.

Can't imagine that 5 people made 2 shift-r's. Did anyone bother to stop n go after resets or just retired?

Sky is driving with touchpad and he is doing this very well!

The incidents you mention have to be reported to get a neutral judgement. My first look at them show no steering issues by Sky!

As far as I see there were only 2 s+r in this race...

He is doing extremely well, no mistake there. Still, i can imagine that device such as touchpad restricts your manouvering ability in close battle more than a steering wheel.

Incidents don't have to be reported if i don't want to report them. My judgment is that i could've left him a bit more room regardless of touchpad, lines and whatever i don't need anyone elses judgement really. Thx for the offer anyway  ;)

It's still possible that there were more cases where someone got damaged and needed to reset, but retired instead. Whatever, its anyones free choice to retire when they choose.

Surfs up!  It was time, to put on the fireproof swimming costume, and head to a new track, for a new Season of racing.  Given the strange luxury, of several cars to choose from, I chose the one, with the safest setup, to get me to the finish line.  But with a closely matched grid, this put me near the back.

The race produced insufficient debris, to prosper as I'd hoped, and my mirrors rarely rested.  Those behind always seemed in rather a hurry to get somewhere?  This made for some good close, clean racing, from where I sat.  Until with only 2 laps left, and with yet another car to harass my worn out mirrors, I suffered a screen freeze, to keep Steve's company.  Some good fun up to that point, and looking forward to more, and to giving my mirrors a rest!

Before the race a few square steering wheel issues in the BT11 had me worried but Martin sorted me out shortly before qualifying started, thanks.

Managed to set a fast lap reasonably early which turned out to be good enough for pole. Qualifying was a suprise as the track did not seem as busy as I thought it would be so I focused on my own driving rather than looking for a tow.

As for the race I got off the line well enough and into the first corner in the lead. Geoff and Axel were ever present on Prib but I tried not to look back as I was having so much fun up front. Unlike Opatija, I really like Surfers Paradise. I was gutted when I saw the chequered flag as I could have kept going longer with no concentration issues. Whether in close battle or alone I really enjoy this track in the 65 cars.

Great start to the season and the Intermediates but something tells me Mexico and its unforgiving polo mints will be more of a slog.........I hope not. Looking forward to the next one already.

This was not an diversified race for me...

With my good start I caught 4th place and kept it til Steves mistake, who made me the gift of a podium.

Sorry David, but I had to be carefull into T1! But I did not brake...

Maybe you just had that feeling I had, when I rearended Sky last season.
In GPLRA I saw that my car was doing a fast move forward when I came near in his slipstream!
This caused my loosing the championship...

Having spent 2 days trying (in vien) to get my 3hp twin outboard motor to run,  I felt more than a little daunted when confronted with the innards of a 64 valve 1500cc Climax V8 engine , to this end I spent untold hours thrashing the thing to death , honing my skills to perfectiononly to find on arrival at the track that I could quite easily have qualified as a backmarker in the novices race  :-\
So armed with this knowledge and fully resigned to be tail end charlie,  I decided my tactics would be to follow the rest of the pack in the hope of picking up a place or two which other faster drivers might have  vacated by one means or other . Good news , I didnt have to wait long before a few went grass cutting and allowed me to pass ( I think I was actually 10th at one point ) Bad news , these same chaps (who obviously hadn't read the rules ) just were not playing the game and were soon knocking on my exhaust pipes in there hurry to regain there former positions , all went well until around lap 12 one one such car made it clear that he to wantedto pass , I offered him the racing line into the esses but he insisted on doing it the hard way round resulting in me being launched uncermoniously into the boondocks from which position I made the quick decision that retirement was the best and safest option  ::)

Rather annoying at the time but realistically I suppose It must count as one of those racing incedent things and partly my fault as its not often you expect to encounter a tortoise in the middle of the track   :o

Hi Bernie,

in the early 70s I made one of my greatest holidays in Greece with my wife and our Citroen 2CV.
At that time they were not a member of the EU and their roads on the Peleponnes where old and just like the Targa Florio.
I learned to be aware that after each corner there can be a big tortois or a snail or a big rock waiting for you to be hit.
Biggest surprise we had when the road just was completely broken down into a canyon and just some green branches were laid at the borders to warn us...

So no problem on a track for me, if I can see you some corners before, to pass you save ;)

Well, i drive with mouse, laptop touchpad to be exact... also, no matter how I tried to set the car, front left allways started boiling at the slightest attempt to drift these 2 turns before and after pit straight...and i kept forgetting that.  All that said, I really drove like crap in all the races after bathurst, and I have no excuse for that... the very bad luck and the frustration didnt help either... Dont know why that happens, but I apoligize to everyone involved. I wouldnt mind you reporting me for the accidents, I quite definetly deserve it...

maybe you did to me what we call "queue de poisson" in France  :D

by the way, it is race and now it is an old story !

how can you drive with a mouse and touchpad  ??? I cannot imagine how it should be difficult ?

can't you buy a steering wheel ?

In English it's called target fixation. I've seen it happen right in front of me in a race at the Central Victorian, Winton Raceway a few years back.....quite a few years back. Two bikes in front of me  negotiating a LH medium speed corner called Mo's Nose. The guy in front of the little group crashed, and the guy following him crashed as well, in an identical manner. I didn't crash, because I wasn't watching the back of the bike in front. I had lifted my eyes and was looking thru the corner for the apex. Caught all the action in my peripheral vision though, then nearly crashed at the following right hander, laughing.
