Title: UKGPL Season 22 (2011-2012) Historic (66) - Monsanto Park - Nov 15
Post by: G Jonsson on November 11, 2011, 01:32:24 PM +0000
WELCOME TO THE UKGPL SEASON 22 HISTORIC (66) TROPHY

For the second round we go to Portugal. The Monsanto track, seems to be a bit driverconsuming, last season we had 16 drivers on the starting line and only 4 drivers took the chequered flag and 3 of them were lapped by the winner, so be aware.

There will be full moderation of lap one Red Zone and reported incidents for the rest of the race. Please submit incident reports within a week after the race so that the moderators report may be out before the next race.

The Red Zone is from start up Riding school.

Reserve drivers should not use the server between 35 and 30 minutes of qualifying to allow full timers to join.

Please restrict chat to a minimum, (or maybe none).

Best of luck.

Nice track to race on but very demanding :P
Love to race on this one because there are much hubble the bobbles on it and you are never sure for 100% how your car will react .
I have seen from replay's that the BRM is the fastest car on the long straight line at Monsanto .
leave you with these words and see you all tomorrow on this crazy track .
Be carefully at the start and first turn to the left brrrrrrrrrrrrr nasty turn me thinck so ;

Hehe - this was an exercise in frustration.... T7 crashed so I hurriedly prepared UKGPL_3 just in case. Joined T7 with.... 6 seconds to go and in my haste knocked my steering wheel out of the PC. No shift and no brakes... So throttle, steering, keypad 2 for brakes and auto shifting... In the circumstances I was pretty pleased with a 2:30... Bailed out when Clive passed me as I just couldn't be sure to keep out the way...

ah well, bed and lemsip...

to cap it all, I jumped the start because the auto shift kicked in and I couldn't find the brake.... loadsa black flags!

My great start to the season continues with what must be my most competitive Historic race ever.  Didn't get lapped and managed to keep King Hiro honest to claim 5th place.  I got under 2 mins for the first time in qually and managed to improve my PB several times in the race.  I went wide a few times chasing down KH but I didn't damage the car or loose much time but I was absolutely on the limit and not capable of going any faster.  I'm pretty sure KH had a bit in reserve because his fastest lap was better than mine, nevertheless it was worth trying to put him under pressure just in case he made a mistake.  Unlikely I know (in fact it is the big difference between the "Works" and "Privateer" drivers, the "Works" drivers don't make anywhere near as many mistakes) but I enjoyed the attempt.

Grats to Clive on the win and well done to all the finishers on a difficult track.

thought that might be the case when I saw your antics off the grid , my race wasn't much better , planned on taking things easy and get to the finish . Fine till I started getting confident , too confident in fact , got stuck in them haybales twice , first time managed to extracate myself after 5 minutes stomping on and off the gas while trying to make crop circles with the thing  ::)  2nd time got stuck fast , ran out of juice trying to get out  :-\

Sad case of ambition overcoming ability   :-\

grats to whover won (Clive ?) , to the podium and all else who made it to the chequered , salutations to those like me who fell by the wayside , keep yer peckers up ther's always another race  :)

That was bloody good fun!
I came into qually having done zero practise for this and vague recollection of an early bath last time out at this track.. I chose to run the cooper as it was the car I used last season at Monsanto and the setup was very nice and stable. My qual time of 2:03 was done at a leisurely pace and with full fuel and thus I knew that from the back my only chance of making a points finish was to be cautious and that approach paid off with 7th at the flag. I had a few scary moments, twice had to use the banking in that horrid left hooker and once brushed the bales at the other tight leftie but otherwise I drove very steady. Biggest threat to me was in the early laps when Maddog Martin was running in close company with me - he clearly had some extra pace but he just couldnt keep it together and I was worried he was going to take me out... A couple of times I saw his desperate lunges well in advance and was able to move out of the way and then retake the position when he slid off.. his eventual demise was easily forseeable! By the end of the race I had found some decent pace, consistantly under 2:00, setting a PB of 1:57 on the final lap..
Over all, pretty pleased :)

After losing out badly in the opening round i needed to score some good points here to keep myself in touch with the faster guys in the championship. The problem at Monsanto is that pushing hard usually ends your race prematurely plus, as Jason said, it is so easy to be the joint victim of someone else's mistake  :-\.

I used the same setup as last season ( although last season I was eased out of the race on lap1 ::) ) The 66 Waza has great bucket loads of power if you can set the gearing just right and for this race I had to set 1st gear for use out of the hairpin at the bottom of the hill, which meant that I struggled off the grid at the start.
Goran took full advantage of that and whipped his Brabham into the lead.  :(

Once the Wazamobile was rolling I easily caught him and started to look for a way to get past him. I figured the safest place to be on this track is as far away from other cars as possible!! lol, which really means being in the lead if you can get there.

I did not expect Goran to make it easy for me in his Brabham, but I was hoping that I could force a small error from him whilst he was on cold tyres and full tanks. Then to my surprise he moved over and allowed me a free pass!!!! :o :o.
Well, Waza training means that you never question an opportunity, so I took the lead!
I suspect that Goran was being sneaky and hoping that I would crash out and leave him to pick up the pieces  ;)
The next few laps I pushed as hard as I could to try and build a safety gap, without getting stuck on those straw bales. Slowly I eased away until I had about 6-7 secs lead and from then on it was a case of just maitaining the gap as i lapped a few backmarkers.
For the last 10 laps I drove very carefully and was amazed to finish the race with 8 gallons of fuel in the tank and still comfortably ahead of Goran and Sven.

Grats to all the finishers, a triumph for anyone around this circuit.
Also thanks to those who sorted out the server problems just before the race  ;) ;D

Goran sorted out the server all on his own - I just wanted a backup, just in case...

Congrats to Clive and weel done indeed Goran for keeping calm while servers were melting around you. Looks like it is going to be another great Historics season. Already looking forward to La Belle France... I am sure I won't crash at the hairpin this time....

As Bernie already noticed, they make extremely thick hay at Monsanto. They are really gone to far with GMO modifications.

I got stuck in the hay on the left when my son suddenly entered my vision on the right at great speed while making a great noise. At least thats a variable which can be deleted from that scene in future.

Other positive development is my setup for 66 3L Brabham with which feels comfortable and produces serious laptimes. Only downside seems  to be that i'm incredibly slow on the straights.

Got overtaken by a few on the 1st lap, but got back on Al's tail very easily. Was sitting behind him pondering my slow straightline speed, when hay disaster struck.

Congrats to Clive and other 7 finishers. Which is almost 50% of the starters, not that bad for such track.

Are the results from replay visible anywhere without downloading replay itself. Like it is for 67W?

Had a good start & was running close behind Sven & Tom in the early laps but noticed I was being reeled in fast by the new Mk2 Phil "Turbo" Thornton... I attempted to find a bit more speed but only ended up in finding a bit more scenery & joined the spectators up on the bank at turn 1 to watch "Turbo" breeze by serenely. Set off in hot pursuit of Phil but found my concentration was now being severely challenged by the missus who was charging around the house chasing the cat who was in turn chasing a mouse that she'd just brought in & promptly let loose in the kitchen (I bet Graham Hill never had to put up with that!) The live action Tom & Jerry scenario unfolding around me prompted a few more errors & I soon found myself under attack from Andrea's Ferrari - this turned into a really nice battle for a few laps - Andrea made a good pass only to hand me an opportunity to retake the place but then Andrea sadly disappeared off into the boondocks & I was left in a lonely 6th. Tried hard to once again make an impression on Phil in the latter stages but the more I pushed the more the gap seemed to extend :-\ & finally I pushed just that little bit too far & ended up marooned in a haybale with just a few laps to go. Ah well, it was great fun while it lasted. Congrats to Evil, Goran & Sven plus all the finishers.

I'm pretty sure KH had a bit in reserve because his fastest lap was better than mine, nevertheless it was worth trying to put him under pressure just in case he made a mistake.
It was right out respectless to put me under that preassure Phil! I had some reserves that I was very hesitant to use on this track but did it anyways a couple of times to try keep you off my back :)
This race was nice and exciting although I did not dare to keep the preassure up like the front guys did. Great Job. I must admit by looking at the times that there was not much I could have done with evil anyway Grats.Early in the race a ferrari (I thought was Phil but rpy showed it was Andrea) passed Sven and I went somewhat wide in t1 to avoid contact. He managed however to brake sufficcently and stayed nice on the inside line. I kept looking 135 degrees and went wide in the following slow right hander. I stayed on the tarmac but Andrea went off.I think there was some contact between him and Sven. Sven had the ability to keep pressure and pace higher than me so I let him by and tried to follow him instead. I had bigger engine and could always get him on the straight I thought and the defensive driving cost us both time. I never really managed to hold that pace in the race and he pulled away from me. I had a nice 4 th pulling Al along in his more tricky BRM but was sad to see him touch the hayballs. Then the second half of the race was looking at timeboard and sweating big to keep a surprisingly fast Phil of my back. It was hard but I managed to take home 4 th. :)
Did they catch the mouse Al ?:D

Sounds like Al prefers to drive without a mouse!  The opening stint without one, made it obvious my setup needed some adjustment, to tame it's unruly ways. This thought was thrown out the window, as soon as my car was thrown off the track.  I've a recent history of disco's and assumed I was alone, in being alone.  Rather surprised to finally regain the track! 8)

The race start seemed orderly enough, except I allowed Fulvio to sneak through.  Happier when an opportunity arrived to repass on lap 2, along the ever lasting right curve, down the inside.  The door was unexpectedly closing on my arrival, so my rear wheel, flung it open again as I came through, leaving poor Fulvio face down!  We were fortunate not to cause mass carnage!  My fault!  My apologies for being too opportunistic, in an unexpected passing place.  I was surprised to be able to continue.

My car soon developed into a bit of a beast to drive.  And I had Blito to attenuate my aspirations . . . my what?  Anyway, I was polite enough to turn around, and wave my thanks, upon passing him,  so he promptly repassed me!  The next time by, I decided to examine some straw, and let it do the waving for
me, without stopping.  Those cautionary tales we all read about, have to come from somewhere, you know!  Moments later, I missed a gear, and broke the motor, throwing oil out at my pursuer, to add to the straw.  At least it wasn't tar and feathers!  A poor reward for a Blito, who was driving well.  :-\

I think memento's from this race, will go into a different kind of scrap book.

I saw it coming from a mile off m8 and made sure I was in a safe place, well away from the smoke and flames :D  I breathed a big sigh of relief when your motor blew, then allowed Jonny O to pass (no point holding up a much faster guy) and set off on a serene cruise to  the finish, re-passing Jonny when he seemed to run into car trouble late in the race...

Not there was in trouble Blito, :D you were simply increasing the pace and I could not handle.

My big problem was at the start, my car was muted  >:(  had to throw off the track and hit the wall with care of the box :o so the sound came back and returned to the race.  ;D

so.... if the moderators see the replay of my start :o....... I was not mad.

LOL Al, I knew I had to do something when I saw your performance at Moulinsart so I asked my cats to telepathically contact your cat and ask her to .......... it seems that it worked  ;D

The race allthough I got a good second was a bit of a misscalculation. I took the start and managed to get through the first tricky T1, T2 but so did Evil, I must confess that I more or less did not expect him to, so after a few more turns I eased off a bit to let him by. I am not so very keen on having drivers right behind me because I know I tend to brake early and that may lead to a bit too close racing for my liking. But I was confident both to be able to follow him and that he would sooner or later visit the scenery but instead he left me behind and stayed on track, WD Evil, so there I was with my supersmart calculations and had to focus on keeping my second rather that putting pressure on Evil.

Luckily I managed to keep Sven and the rest at a safe distance allthough at times I was a bit worried because I was over cautious as soon as I saw a yellow flag and there were quite many and on top of that some lapping, not that there were any problems but some laptimes were quite slow but I guess Sven, in third, had his moments also because he never really got any closer, and I could keep my second.

Thanks all for a good race, 8 finishers is an all time Monsanto record at UKGPL, and Congrats to Evil for the win and Sven for 3rd.

Göran

PS. The true server story. Fulvio reset and I restarted the server, sorry for the loss of quali times.

PPS: Thanks Paul for putting up the replay.

Thanks Fulvio - the analyser does a nice job of producing an HTML report as is but I wanted to give it some GPL branding - not too difficult but a lot of work for very little gain...
