Title: UKGPL Season 22 (2011-2012) Novices (65) - Mexico City (1962-1979) - Nov 22

UKGPL Season 22 65 Novices Trophy
Race 2 Mexico City

Welcome to the second round of the Novices Trophy for Season 22. Time for the men to be sorted from the boys. Having shaken off the rust at sunny Surfers with a tight twisty track with one really long straight we are going to a standard Papy track which has a really long start/finish straight and lots of tight twisty sections! Hmm, who chose these tracks?

Our second race is at the historic 2.747-mile race track "Autódromo Hermanos Rodriguez" in Mexico City, named for the famous racing drivers Ricardo and Pedro Rodríguez. This track first hosted F1 in 1962 when Ricardo was killed in practice for the non-championship event. Despite this inauspicious start the course was a staple of the F1 championship between 1963 and 1970. The 65 is again well suited to this track and should provide some close racing if we can avoid the deadly polos. However, be aware that it could be a little crowded when we get to the esses first time round. There will be crashes and patience is a must. The first lap will be fully moderated within the red zone. The red zone will extend to the whole of the first lap.

Please check the Season 22 pages for details (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=335&theme=6) regarding rules and the Novices Trophy (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=340&theme=6) pages in particular.

It is very important that drivers are FULLY familiar with the rules relating to Shift-R. EVERY Shift-R MUST be followed by a Stop-and-Go or the driver will be excluded.

Please see the Novices registration thread for an explanation of the chassis allocations shown below:
https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=9196.0

Please ensure that you take a valid chassis for your group. I will be checking.

We set a part of the race to be moderated - we do not fully moderate the whole race any more. So any incidents in the red zone (in this case Lap 1) will be fully investigated whether they are reported by anyone or not. After that only reported incidents will be moderated.

OK?

Right - time to start the 'What's a good time?' debate. I can do 1:57 here which I think will be solid midfield but 6 secs shy of the lap record. Am I kidding myself?

My best sector times indicate a mid 54 but stringing them all together is another story...

Best sector times would get me to 1:55 but that does launch me in to the armco at several places....

1:57 is achievable and repeatable. I was wondering what others could run at as a realistic pace. There is work to do for sure but I am hopeful of a top ten. Mind you, I always am and then the race happens... :(

Sad you are not around Jason...

Its easy to get false sector times at Mexico , take T1 for e.g.  the sector ends just after the turn in point so if you dive in too fast you get a great sector time but then you either run into the armco or at least your  exit speed is compromised giving a poor start to sector 2  :)

If they do carlos just reset (Shift-R) when it is safe to do so and then take a stop and go in the pits.

I suspect LOTS of people may have to reset...

Buzzing - had such a good race with Nigel, then Paul, then Giovani (wd on your first race) and then Nigel again...

Disappointed for John about the connection problems... join us tomorrow for BREASTs maybe?

Sorry about the server crash. Not sure what that was.

Onwards and upwards... top ten at Cerne is now the aim...

Well done to Hendy on his first win.

Norm, still the bridesmaid, hope you're not the Chris Amon of UKGPL mate :) A first win is long overdue.

Norm is definitely not the Chris Amon...

He's not that good ;)

Seriously, I cannot believe he won't be tasting the virtual champagne sometime soon. I am just hoping that I might get on a podium one day...

I am in the middle of an office move at work at the moment, so I didn’t get any chance to do any practice for Mexico, and I really was expecting the worst. At the start of qualifying I was quite slow, and then the server crashed. Getting back to qualifying I some how managed a decent lap, which was over a second better than my pervious PB. I was really happy with that and was surprised to be 3rd on the grid.

At the start I took it easy, my team mate was right in front of me going into turn 1, so I backed off a little and promptly lost a place to Rotaxmax. I managed to stay with Rotaxmax but couldn’t find a way past, that Honda sure is quick on the straights. After a number of laps, Rotaxmax made a small mistake which let me past, but now he was right on my tail. I was constantly in fear of that Honda on the straights, as if he got close I would have been a sitting duck. Luckily I was slightly faster in the twisty bits and managed to get a little breathing room before the straight.

Somehow I managed to pull a little gap, but it was really hard work keeping my concentration up as any little mistake cause more pressure from behind. I had a moment when lapping someone who spun going into the hairpin, I couldn’t miss them and crashed right into the side of them. I managed to get going again fairly quickly, it cost be about 5 seconds, but it meant that Rotaxmax was right on my tail again, this time I couldn’t pull away in the twisty bits and he overtook me. I tried to stay with him, and put some pressure on him this time. I was doing OK, but started to push too hard. Going into turn 1 he made a little mistake and ran wide, I obviously got target fixation as I ran wide too. It turned out worse for me as it caused me to spin, letting Il_Lupo past too. With only 3 laps to go it was over for me, I tried to put some pressure on but I was too far behind with too few laps left.

I ended up finishing 6th, which considering I hadn’t done any practice I am quite pleased. However just after the race I was a little bit gutted, spending most of the race in 4th, driving my heart out only to lost not only 4th but 5th too all due to a accident when lapping a car, was a little disappointing.

Not sure if I’ll be able to make the next race, it depends if everything goes smoothly with the move. Hope to be there as these BT11’s are fun to drive. Talking about BT11’s looking at the results it was almost a specs race at Mexico :)

Congrats to Hendy, great win with great pace here, and ofcourse Norm and Rog, Well done guys.

With good reason Johnny. Have you worked out why you were getting kicked?

Hendy was robbed of pole by the server disco which meant that the shorter second qually started with a clean sheet & I managed to get myself up to full speed before he did. That pole was a pb, & fast enough to qually 4th on the Inters race ( just thought I'd mention that ;) ).
Basically Hendy passed me to turn 1 & cleared off leaving me to spend several laps before I finally got a gap on RogUK which  built up as the race went on.
Well done to Hendy & Rog & thanks to those who were lapped for their good behaviour.
Thanks for the commiserations Ross its the chance that one day it will all come right that keeps us all trying.

I am sorry about the server crash and I hope that my decision to just leave 18mins was OK with you guys.

I am still unsure why it happened but I got the dreaded 'GPL has stopped working...' First time I have seen that since the server was commissioned properly. Hopefully a one off. Hope also that John can get back on.

Well done all.

I can echo Al's comments as I too got a few places and then lost them again. Happy to run seventh at one stage but 9th not too bad given my pace. Bit gutted not to average under two mins per lap. Missed that by half a second per lap... :(

I also rear ended somebody at T1. [Turns out it was Nigel - oops. Never a good idea to crash into a team mate :(] I thought I had managed to stop in time but I saw them spin off. I think the mod will take a dim view...  ;D Sorry to whoever it was, I'll check the replay and report myself... :(

Getting better though....  :)

Strange race for me, 4th on grid and 3rd into turn 1, had some enjoyable racing trying to keep up with NHance after 8 laps he pulled out a gap and that was it, with Hendy way out front and NHance pulling away the rest of the race was disappointing poss due to my car setup gears all wrong etc (lame excuse, its down to the driver). Thanks Happyal for care into turn 1, sorry to hear about your lapping incident.
Grats to Hendy a great win, and Nhance for 2nd and pole

Dont know why I kept getting kicked Geoff, could be a game setting that I should have done- or maybe my new homeplug (first time in use on gpl)- probably the latter
