Title: UKGPL Season 22 (2011-2012) Intermediate (65) - Mexico City (1962-1979) - Nov 22

UKGPL Season 22 65 Intermediates Trophy
Race 2 Mexico City

Welcome to the second round of the Intermediates Trophy for Season 22. We move from sunny, twisty Surfers, a track with a really long start/finish straight to a standard Papy track - sunny, twisty Mexico City which has a really long start/finish straight. It does, however, present a different challenge to Surfers and the giant polos are none too sweet.

This race is at the historic 2.747-mile race track "Autódromo Hermanos Rodriguez" in Mexico City, named for the famous racing drivers Ricardo and Pedro Rodríguez. This track first hosted F1 in 1962 when Ricardo was killed in practice for the non-championship event. Despite this inauspicious start the course was a staple of the F1 championship between 1963 and 1970. The 65 is again well suited to this track and should provide some close racing if we can avoid the deadly polos. However, be aware that it could be a little crowded when we get to the esses first time round. There will be crashes and patience is a must. The first lap will be fully moderated within the red zone. The red zone will extend to the end of the esses (turn 13) on the straight before Peralta.

Please check the Season 22 pages for details (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=335&theme=6) regarding rules and the Intermediates Trophy (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=347&theme=6) pages in particular.

Beginning to wonder if it was a good idea to sign up for the Inters :o Its genuinely to allow room in the Novices rather than having any delusions that I might be competitive. I'm not listed in the race thread but assume I will be Group I - although I will be driving the customary BT11. Seems to be a distinct lack of Gp IV & Gp V drivers.

Sorry Bill. My oversight. Yes, Group I. The lack of Group IV, V will change once races 1-3 are complete and we have a better idea of where people should be. I think Cookie has put you in now, either that or I am editing these pages in my sleep now...

Yes it was Billy!
As you have the full car choice it is up to you to  use the benefits of a "better" car.
I do remember the pace you can go in the BT11 ;)

Really needed to win this to have any show in the title, as Cerne's Wood and my laptop, don't get along at all, consequently I'll be forced to miss. Practiced quite a bit for Mexico and simply tweaked my Surfers setup with a set of very useable gear ratios. I had set a 1:52.8 in practice, but that's not always easy to reproduce in a Qualifying environment. Went out for Qually and set a banker lap, then tried to pedal it round as fast as I could make it go. After 4-5 laps, the last one feeling quite good, I pulled over and checked the lap sheets to find I had squeeked another 52 and was about 3/10ths clear of the next competitor, Dave Rainier I think it was at the time. Sat out most of the rest of Qually, until Ronnie bagged a 52 as well then thought I'd best be in the car if he pulled out another and bumped me off the top step. Traffic was a bit thick and found myself unable to advance my time any further. as it turned out, the time ended up good enough for pole    :o

Got a good start in the race and headed Ronnie into turn 1, leaving him some room on the inside as he'd indicated his path as we approached. Then set about settling into a groove and pulling out some time on the baying pack. Stretched the lead to 2 seconds then relaxed a bit, to concentrate on hitting the apexes and getting good exits. Ronnie was hard at it and started clawing little packets of time back, so every few laps I found myself having to push for a couple of laps to maintain a gap. Eventually, with a herculean effort, Ronnie caught right up behind me into turn 1. His eyes must have been big as dinner plates, having the opportunity to be this close after 16 grueling laps of effort. Sadly, in his haste to get out of the corner he put the right rear on the grass and spun, to be passed by Dave whom was holding on grimly, but got a new lease on life by picking up second. I was beginning to haul in the tail of the field and pushed to try and catch the car up ahead, to put them between me and Dave. I caught Bill into the hairpin on lap 17 and nearly had a cow when he had a half spin right at the apex, and hadn't left me a lot to aim for. He gathered it up and got clear, then as I rounded him up seeing he'd pulled over to let me by, poor Bill drove into the side of me and spun me off to the inside!! Arrrrgh, twin cows now!! Got going again and made haste to the start/finish line to get my pit signal and find out where Dave was. My hard won 9 second gap had been slashed to 4 seconds. Got my head down again and pushed for a couple of laps to stabilize the gap...then cruised, happily, to the finish. My first 'proper' race win at last. I don't count last seasons last-man-standing GT effort as a win.

Commiserations to teamie Ronnie, for spinning when he really didn't need it....and after driving the wheels off the BT and all. Cars can be very inconsiderate at times. But congratulations as well to Dave and Ronnie for picking up the podium places. Very good to see there were no L1/T1 disasters, and there appeared to be a bit of 'jousting' going on throughout the field to cap off a very good race.    ;D

PS: Forgot to mention the cracking fast lap set by Ronnie during the chase....a very impressive 1:52.582. Great job there mate.
And also big congratulations to Hendy Nichols on his first UKGPL Novice victory, very well done.

Grats to Geoff for his superb win!
Grats to David and Ray who completed the podium!

I hate this Mexico! But I love Cernes Wood!  ;D

My quali was suboptimal and I started from 7th but my start was quite good and made me 5th after T2 ;)
From there to lap 11 T3, I had a great battle with Ross not risking anything, waiting for a mistake...
But Sky had closed up as I had given Ross some space when he went wide in T1.
Braking a little early into T3, I suddenly saw only sky...
Recovering with a little damage on my front suspension I came in between Pete and Bernies battle.
It took some laps til I caught Bernie and we had a fair and respectfull fight for 5th.
Two old men fighting like youngsters what a FUN ;D (I know, Bernie you are about 14 years more experienced ;) )

Satisfied with my result, I can't wait to start at Cernes Wood   :fencing:

I just arrived on the tail of the Bernie's little train when my engine did a fireball. Have already noticed at Surfers that towards end of the race i wasn't reaching next gear when i should have. Well, now i know why. I'm obviously doing something nasty to those little beasts, only need to figure what.

Congrats to Geoff, and it's especially nice to see Bernie score good result right after those depressing Surfers stories.

Thanks Ivan   ;D  Your top gear seemed a little short to me Ivan, if you jump in my cockpit for a lap or two on the replay...I barely reached redline in a draft....but still could manage 160-161 at turn in for T1. Plus spinning early and getting clunked by Bill, then a bounce off the fence later on wouldn't have helped. All that stuff is cumulative damage, and something must pop in the end. When at or near redline too, you should delay your first downshift, or overspeeding is inevitable. Hope this helps, other than blowing the engine, yours was a good drive.
Ditto Bernie, nice drive there mate.

Interesting comparison of the top 5 qualifiers from each grid. Only 5 odd seconds covering 15 drivers...and with the addition of Novices, not too bad at all.

In pre-race practice I realized, I was very fast through the first corner, and that, if the others could somehow be avoided, my race would be good. :D

A worthwhile start meant I was up to 5th after 2 laps, and just ahead of team mate Cookie.  My driving was inspired, and so my engine expired, heading towards the hairpin on lap 3.  This required a high speed ponder, as to where to stop.  I needed the safest, quickest spot.  After considering the use of Cookie's nose, I picked the outer hairpin, just ahead of him!  It was here, I switched from BRM power, to Grumble power, and recovered to last place!  Grumble!

Having hoped to waft down the main straight, and overpower hapless Brabhamized victims, at it's end, t'was not the case.  Instead, almost the entire remainder was spent, chasing Jonnie'O's tail, and trying not to overrev my grumbling.  He refused to show any sympathy, but continued on with an obstinate 3-5 second gap, to it's end.  This was very inconsiderate!  :-\

Nice one Geoff!  I believe we have some serious competition ahead of us, and hopefully some more behind as well, to prevent grumble overload.

Sadly, in his haste to get out of the corner he put the right rear on the grass and spun, to be passed by Dave whom was holding on grimly, but got a new lease on life by picking up second.

Yup that pretty much sums it up nicely. I was never going to settle for second and spent three quarters of the race trying to shake off Dave and catch Geoff. Having got a small gap on Dave in third and lining up Geoff for the lead I spun, it happens sometimes. Geoff, who had excellent pace the whole race sailed on for a deserved win and Dave romped passed into second, again deserved reward for not giving up. I was happy to settle for third spot. As for that 1.52.582 lap, it was needed just to get within striking distance of you Geoff and I owe you a tow sometime!!

Congrats to everyone else who finished the race as I suspect this track is not to everyones taste? I for one really like Mexico. Roll on Cerne Wood. Try and be there Geoff?

I am very happy with my 2nd place at Mexico.
It is essentially due to mistakes or problems encountered by Jonny'O on the grid (what happened Jonny ?) and by Ronnie at the end of the race.
Just before Ronnie spun, I had no more hope to finish at a better position than 3rd.
During the 10 first laps, I did my best and maybe more to be able to follow Ronnie and Geoff but when my car touched the wall at turn 1, I decided to secure my 3rd place.

In this championship, it is clear Geoff and Ronnie are the best and it will be difficult to win !

I raced one time on-line (it was with mod67) in Cerne's Wood ...but there was a massive disconnection  :-\

Early days Dave. I have to admit that Surfers Paradise and Mexico really suit the way I drive and I really like those two tracks. I can't say the same for some of the remaining tracks, but I will be looking to improve on them!

Oh yeah and don't forget the chassis review after 3 races.......hark is that the whine of a BT7 I can hear????

A rather inauspicious start to life in the Inters. I have always been particularly slow at Mexico - but slow means I usually stay on the track most of the time. My PC carshed during quallification and when I eventually rejoined I was repeatedly messing up Turn 1.
Plan B was keep driving for long enough for the track to take out some of the opposition.
Plan C - which was NOT intended was to almost ruin the leaders race. I tucked in to allow Geoff to lap me but slightly misjudged where he was. Having checked my reply there was actually a healthy dose of warp involved but I should have left a little more margin. Was extra careful to give Dave & Ronnie extra room to pass.
Some may have noticed that Dave Rainer is now turning out for Black Night Racing & having dragged Maestro back to UKGPL we have a good line up for this division.
PS - having checked Geoff's replays I noticed that the gear changes which I've carried over from the 67's aren't the quickest. Tried it out & I've reduced my lap time from 1.57's to 1.55's - 1.54 in Prib. Still a pale shadow of Mr Heard's 1.52 but somewhat better. Should have though of that that before!

Yes  ;)

but why our team got only 64 points for this race ?
19 (Maestro) + 13 (Billy) + 43 (me) = 75 points

And Billy, may I ask you to read my signature ?

Ahhh Dave. You of all people should be able to work out the team scores as you are so hot on looking closely  ;D

If you look at the scoring in the Ints, you can open up the table. You will see this:

Scoring Scheme
At each event, best 2 scores count
All rounds count
Points: 50, 43, 37, 32, 28, 25, 23, 21, 19, 17, 15, 13, 11, 9, 7, 5, 3, 2, 1

So best two, and ONLY team members count. Some drivers are unattached. Ross is a Clark-Hill driver but doesn't score since both Geoff and Ronnie finished ahead of him and they are also Clark Hill so Maestro gets 21 points for the team instead of nineteen and Billy doesn't contribute to the team effort at all.

43+21=64.

QED.

I was all set up to drive the rice burner here but made a last minute decision to take the old faithful Brabmobile , so hastily donned a steve Cloyyd set up and for once didn't set about changing the dampers / ride hiegth / brake balance / roll bars / w.h.y.  and stuck religiously to the instructions ( apart from raising top gear in the hope of saving some oil for the finish )

More than surprised to find I got a mid posiion grid slot just a little behind mad dogs Honda (.001 sec ) and was even more surprised in the race when I found myself in close company with  Axel , Sky, and P.M. the same guys who were practically lapping me at surfers .

Weather or not this was down to the cloyyd set up , my superb knowledge of the track , my pure driving skill , or ( more likely ) wearing a brand new pair of Demon Tweeks full race carpet slippers , I shall never know the true answer . The outcome though , was I had a big grin on my face for most of the race .

Thanks for the fair contest,  the great racing,  and the kind remarks .

Grats to geoff and the Podium guys and commiserations to Martin ( I told you No smoking in the cockpit , you know its bad for your health )

Hoping for more action at the next venue , did I here its in a woods somewhere ? rally stage ? or a maybe just a walk in the park ?

Yeah Bernie I could see and feel this grin  ;D

Thats the difference in driving, how comfortable I feel on a track...

Cernes Woods is just a walk in the park for me  ;)

I really like the track, in Mexico, but always have problems with the beginning.
I use a keyboard always lose in the 5,7,8 positions of a line from Mexico, because the pit straight is very long.
