Title: UKGPL Season 22 (2011-2012) Privateers (67) - Anderstorp (GP) - Nov 27

We're back in Europe for round three, at the Scandinavian Raceway in Sweden, better known as Anderstorp. Can anyone break the Thornton-Rainier stranglehold?

Race timeRace starts at 21:30 UK time
Qualifying timeBetween 30 and 60 minutes, starting no later than 21:00 UK time

Race length24 laps

Reserve drivers please note; you must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes, to allow full timers to join.

The red zone will be fully moderated for lap 1 only. For this event the red zone will be from the start line to the exit of Gislaved (turn 5). Other moderation will be on reported incidents only.

The chassis token system is explained on the Privateers (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=336&theme=6) standings page. Please ensure you choose a chassis that is within your budget, which can be seen by hovering the mouse over your points total in the standings.

Anderstorp hosted the Swedish Grand Prix six times from 1973 to 1978, Sweden's heyday in Formula One. After the deaths of Ronnie Peterson and Gunnar Nilsson interest was lost and the event was dropped. It did produce some notable winners though, Denny Hulme snatching the win from Peterson on the penultimate lap in 1973, the six-wheeled Tyrrells scoring a 1-2 in 1976 and the Brabham fan car dominating its only race in 1978.

It also features some cambered corners and the pits are not in the same place as the start/finish line; in fact the pit entry is awkward and worth practicing.

Highlights of the 1973 Swedish Grand Prix are available to watch here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dPwUDbUTxA

The graphics update removes the low-hanging clouds :( but otherwise it's a big improvement ;)

Yes probably Rainier ::).  I've no tokens left so I'll have to take the BRM.  Without the power advantage of the Ferrari I won't be able to trouble Dave.

Hoping for a good race though, I've been trying to get my PB down but I'm still a second shy of the stunning BRM time set by Bernie in the last Graduates race we ran here in Season 19 (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=7881#event2099).

Not even contemplated the other times, no idea how FMG got the BRM round here that quick!

As SRMZ is down ATM,

the track DL does not work!

Wanted to set UKGPL_8 but I don't have the track yet...

I will send you the track, Cookie.

Can anyone break the Thornton-Rainier stranglehold?
I see no trouble, in toppling these 2 pretenders to the Privateers throne, at Anderstorp.  I expect to finish ahead of both of them, provided they both agree to a 33 lap race. ;D

I will not choose the Ferrari for Anderstorp (neither the BRM :) ) !

But do not forget : Nurburgring and Mosport are well known papy tracks !  I never drove in Anderstorp !
I think there is a place for a 3rd man, here !!! maybe Ross ?

***PLEASE NOTE***

This race is now being run on GPG and will only be 24 laps now. Apologies for the late change but Works needs to run on T7 and I am unable to edit the number of laps on GPG.

Early bath club again!
Same as Friday - punted off half way down a straight because another driver could not hold a straight line!
Tried to make my way back to the track but struck an invisible object on route which spun me into Bernies path (sorry m8...) and found myself facing the wrong way down the track with the pack coming straight at me... I hit esc to avoid more carnage but a strongly worded incident report is going in tomorrow.....

Totally woeful. Sorry to one and all, especially Martin.

No more grads for me until I learn to control these brutes properly. Rubbish.

Mind you, hate Anderstorp.

Well, im running around the track with finely tuned honda, going third with 15 second gap to the driver behind, and im hoping for a well deserved podium position after long strike of awful races... And im actually beggining to enjoy the drive! Yeah... How foolish and ignorant of me to assume that GPL will allow me such heresy as enjoyment. Bang! Disco! Thank you! Youre welcome! Bye!

I was quite enjoying that until I got discoed  >:(

Qualified near the back as expected.  I just couldn't get the BRM round in under 1m 42s which was well off Ross's stunning pole.  There were a lot of incidents which gifted me a lot of places and with about 14 laps to go I was in 5th spot!  Fabio was all over me but every time he tried to get past he either spun out or ran wide.  He must have been sick of the sight of the big H16!  Anyway the field descended on me like a pack of wolves and before long I had started to drop down the order again.  At one stage Geoff disappeared from my rear view mirror so I held my line and hoped for the best, sure enough he reappeared ahead of me (my bad connection a sign of things to come?).  A couple of laps later I down shifted too early and spun the car allowing Fabio though.  I'm pretty sure I heard him cheering LOL.  Anyway shortly after that I got discoed.  Not a good result but at least I earned another 10 tokens  ;D

What a difficult race for me !
First I connected with only 14 minutes before start of the race.
Race was terrible from the begin to the end. my engine exploded (I did a shift R + Stop and Go), I hit one car (sorryfor that , I don't remember who was my victim), I was hitten by another car (then the driver, Fabio Locarno my teammate :)  , waited for me so no problem ! that's race !)

I could be very happy to finish 4rd and to become the new leader as Phil couldn't finish !
Ross did a great race and now he is one of the great favorite of this championship !

I never went to Mont Tremblant, hopefully there are almost 2 months for training !

I was pretty optimistic going into this race and got my first pole in ages, by a decent margin. I was bit surprised but perhaps I had more experience at this track than some, and the Ferrari was an advantage over the Brabhams, Coopers and BRMs that most others went for.

Anyway what looked like a simple cruise to the win was anything but! Towards the end of practice I started getting a lot of framerate problems, going as low as 24fps at some points, and no tweaking of the options made any difference. This made it hard to be consistent and so I took it easy early on.

By about halfway I was still going slower than I would have liked, but had a big gap to Hendy in second place so wasn't too worried. Then I blew the engine :O After a brief panic and change of underwear, I reset and pitted for my stop and go, resuming with a ten second lead. I managed to pull away despite the cold tyres and heavy fuel load and got the win, much to my relief.

Well done to Hendy who followed his maiden win with a solid second place, and teamie Geoff who got third. Clark-Hill are back in the hunt against the Pasties and the drivers' battle looks quite tight too. See you all in the New Year as we head back to Canada, this time Mont Tremblant.

Made big gains due to the lap 1 melee , found myself in P5 ? behind Martin and Phil , was settling down for a decent battle with my old sparring partner when a certain BRM driver (you know who youare ) did a no hope outbraking move , T boned me and I crashed and burned , had to wait for ages to S/R then the Pit in  put me right out  it , decided to carry on regardless and got a decent though hard earned finish after a couple of further incedents .

Never been to Mt tremblant myself so dont know what the weather will be like , praying for rain  ;D

What a poxy track in the back-end of nowhere :)
Who's great idea was it to park those 'planes there  - right on the normal line round that corner?!
Anyway, enough of that...

This is one of the many mystery tracks for me.  Got the track recently, but really did not do much in the way of homework. There again, I don't think it would have made any difference to be honest.

I was glad in the familar surroundings at the back of the grid.  It really does give a good view of what's going on ahead;   also unlikely that breaking too early at the first corner will cause all sorts of trouble.  I recommend it to all of you!

The plan was to try & keep in on the black stuff as much as possible.  It's come to my attention that cruising round/staying ontrack may actually work put quicker than an off at every corner/trashing the tub.  Of course, I'm obviously not an authority in any way.

It's also true to say that this really did appear to be a race of attrition/connection gremlins. So, as a result I lucked into 5th - which I feel is a synthetic result.  But, I'll take it all the same!

Hopefully there was enough room left for all during the numerous re-joins (I never stated it all went to plan...).    I try to be a little too cautious if possible.

Anyway, cheers for the evening entertainment.  My back/wrist is certainly grateful of the shortened race distance.

I see the next round is another mystery track.  Interesting days indeed!

Cheers,
Dave.

Ouch, Skymole, bad luck :(

Congrats, Ross. Not going to complain about the podium finish, but I did better in practice. Finally got a 137 the night before. I was expecting to see some more 137s in qualy. Practice paid off this time, for Mosport I only had one session before the race I think, here I had 5 days or so. At first it was like driving on ice but once I learn the track I come to like it. Fortunately I only had 1 reset on the last lap...vid coming soon :)

LOL. I wondered if this was the worst qualifying result ever. Phil's post about Season 19 took me to the results for the last time out and I am happy to say the my team mate Nigel was even worse than I was! Thanks Nige ;)

I couldn't believe it when I ran out of fuel bt it dawned on me afterwards that I had not set the race setup to anything but default which only has fuel for 14 laps.... thought it was a bit odd.

Frustrating race as I could keep up with Dave C, Bernie and Billy when I concentrated but I KEPT making silly mistakes and blew an engine. Took me three laps to find the Pit entrance.I think I broke the rules there Ross so whatever action is deemed necessary. I think I also gave Phil a little tap when I was being brave early on. Hope that didn't contribute to your early demise Phil and apologies. Don't think I took Blito out (although I was worried when I saw it was a 'couldn't keep the car straight' problem!) but I DEFINITELY took Martin out and then on the rejoin a few drivers had to avoid me but I couldn't see or hear them as my earphones had fallen off!

I'll dob myself in later on but I don't think I did much wrong... as Geoff didn't when he took me out - he didn't even hit me hard enough so thatI could reset and finish the race :(

Last night I thought, right that is rubbish. No more grads for me. This morning, I am looking forward to Round 4... What a masochist!

I suspect I contributed several clips, to the Seasons end Highlights reel, at Anderstorp. :o

It was with a car I found a pleasure to drive, that my start became blighted, at the 1st corner.  The traffic slowed excessively, and I threw a shovel under Billy's rear wheels - not a pretty sight, and no excuse possible!  Next up, a good skirmish with Sky, which ended when some grass got in the way. This meant recovering through the field, and soon up to 4th. ;D

Heading down the main straight at full speed, a jealous pursuer decided he'd prefer my place, and attempted to forceably exchange drivers, before the braking zone.  This inevitably ended badly, as the car contained only enough room for one driver at a time.

Having now festooned the track with much debris, I was surprised to re-recover to a fighting 4th!  But fate remained a force to reckon with, assisted by one frantically spinning Brabham, which brought my Coop. to it's final resting place, with a dead engine.  It gave it's all in the name of progress. :'(

Totally and utterly incredulous at picking up the Bronze in Sweden. This would have to rate as one of my worst 67 performances on record. Too many spins, apologies to Fabio for clipping him whilst I was quietly spinning in T1, apologies to Dave for giving you a clout as you half spun in front of me.....I could see it happening and thought I'd tightened my line sufficiently to avoid you. however  that assumption was incorrect. And apologies to Paul for knocking you off in the last corner. You did nothing wrong there Paul, giving me plenty of room.....but the bloody car simply would not stop sliding, until it contacted you.   ::)   Had some great racing with Phil, Dave, Fabio and Fran.....who was pedalling the BRM at an impressive rate. Sorry to see Phil expired early......his effort deserved better.
But Ross was without a doubt the class act this time out. Uncatchable....blown engine and all. Great drive by Hendy to pick up the Silver silverware as well. Seems I'd better get a LOT of practice for Canada, lest I perform worse than Anderstorp.

UPDATE: Thanks for the reminder Fran, apologies to you for spinning in front of you and leaving you no option but to tag me. It was sloppy driving, getting in too close under Phil's gearbox
then not being able to open the throttle to keep the package all pointing in the right direction. Sorry it sent you off.

First of all, WD to Ross, a true alien at Anderstorp!!

I didn't race with the 67s here since 2008 and I was really surprised about my speed yesterday.

A great last qualify lap and I set the pole position if were only humans to race...

Unfortunately I spun after a contact with Hendy's BRM at first turn so I had to chase the whole grid.

I had big issues to pass Phil's BRM and Geoff's Brabby, so I made a lot of mistakes.

When chasing Dave's Cooper I lost the control of my fezza on the grass so I hit him on the back (It was me, not Francesco...)

Probably a lost second place.

Anyway, great track choice!

See you all next year in Canada

First, sorry to Francesco for confusion with Fabio (but I have to say it's not so evident with such nickname  "il luppo mannaro" :)  by the way what means "mannaro" ?  luppo is wolf, I presume )

No problem, Fabio, for this accident ! It's racing !
but it's a pity we lost together so many times because we are teammates ;)  at this moment, I was pushing hard to keep the contact with Geoff.

Hmmm, a few too many penalties for the Antipasti drivers :(.

We won't win this division if we keep throwing away points.  Our lead has shrunk to 3 points over the pesky Clarke-Hill rabble.  We need to keep out of trouble in the next few rounds or the yellow card penalties will cripple us!!!

Looks like you managed that ....especially late in the race when you harried Dave Rainier to the finish....Both setting your fastest laps on the flat out, Lap 23

It's also true to say that this really did appear to be a race of attrition/connection gremlins. So, as a result I lucked into 5th - which I feel is a synthetic result.  But, I'll take it all the same!

Luck nothing!! We all made copious mistakes....and I put that down to the overall pace of the race. Which, considering we were in each others pockets most of it, was quite good.
You earned your points in that race Dave, as did all the finishers. Very well done. Your another asset to UKGPL.
