Post by: Cookie on December 01, 2011, 10:26:33 AM +0000
WELCOME TO THE UKGPL Season 22 - Pro Trophy

For the third round we go to Watkins Glen, also a well known Papy track.

This race is at the historic 2.3-mile race track "The Glen" in the state of New York,
Watkins Glen hosted F1 from 1961 to 1980.
Several drivers lost their live here, for me the greatest loss was in 1971, when Francois Cevert the charismatic young french driver died in a practice session.

Drivers beginning season 22 with this race have a free car choice!
All others have to keep their chosen car for the rest of the season,
they will only be allowed to swap chassis in exceptional circumstances and only with the approval of the moderator.
Driver lists can be found on the Pro Trophy (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=341&theme=6) championship standings page.

There will be full moderation of lap one Red Zone and reported incidents for the rest of the race.
Please submit incident reports within a week after the race so that the moderators report may be out before the next race.
Full time drivers have priority access to the server until 21.00 UK time.
Please restrict your chat to a minimum!

Axel I have restarted Igor in listening on RD session of T7 server. Let's use Console session only for GT mod that needs to run on OpenGL_V2 at full screen.
Ciao

Magic obviously had connectionproblems so my surprisingly strong 2 nd spot in qual became some kind of pole a bit back from the line. With quiet a bit experience in close racing on this track and with two clean drivers behind me (Gøran and Al) I looked forward to a long nice exciting race. So how could it end so wrong on L 4 or where it was. Maybe I overestimated my skills here a bit . Anyway Gøran passed me on the second straight after some bad balance in the dipper. I found myself close to him on startfinishline , so close I actually lifted a bit in the first left rights , and thought I was gonna get a clean pass even though I dropped back a bit futher than planned. I was not impatient and when I saw Gøran didn t back off I did..or tried to. My speed was obviously somewhat higher than antisipated and that together with gøran obviously  thinking he got clear track to turn in, a touch was impossible to avoid.I had nowhere to go.
Gz to my teammate Al who brought the win home and to all other finishers.

Sorry Tom, it was a weird race.

To begin with I found myself way better then expected in quali so I started from, as it came to be, 2nd on the grid. The start was good and we managed to stay out of trouble for the first lap. Then Tom did not go as fast as I would have liked, with Al at my gearbox, and when the opportunity came I passed him. I was aware that he would be faster then me on the strait the next lap but I did not anticipate he would make a move at the loop and when he did, I though he would only scare me a bit, I found myself in a hopeless situation with nowhere to go. Maybe I should have just let the car go straight ahead hoping to recover somehow but I did not and the coming together was a fact.

But how come all the connection problems, not to mention Tim`s memory problems,  Tristan disconnected and when he came back he was double, very strange, and then got lost again before the start and where did Sven go? We usually do not have those kind of trouble at a papy track so what happend?

Anyway Grats to Al for another stunning race and once again with Evil behind although a bit further this time. I wonder what you did in your season of absent Al?

Göran

It was going for a nice a race after have started from the very back till I missed the turning point at Loop watching for Natan in my mirrors. Lost a wheel on the fence and had an early shower. :(

I guess on a short track the difference in laptime is always going to be much closer, but still it was great to be a lot more competitive here than in Mexico. I qualified better than I expected, setting exactly the same laptime as Goran to within 3 decimal places. With Tristan's disappearance from pole, suddenly Tom, Goran & me made up the top 3 so it promised to be a long & exciting race... :P

A clean start & I tried to stick close to Tom & Goran as I hoped to use their tow to pull away from the rest of the pack led by a fast-starting Jethro, but much to my dismay my tow-providers seemed rather more interested in fighting with each other over the lead :hammer: I have enough trouble navigating the Loop on my own, so when I saw Tom & Goran going in two-abreast I thought "uh-oh" & eased off slightly which proved to be rather fortunate as I was soon picking my way past exploding bits of debris. With 40 laps to go, suddenly I found myself in the lead but no time to relax as Jethro soon provided the motivation for me to speed up a bit by looming scarily-large in my mirrors (I take back what I said before Clive, there are some drivers that brake later than you :D) Luckily Clive, Natan, Jethro & Fulvio all started squabbling over second place & that gave me the opportunity to gradually eke out a bit of a lead. By the time Clive had broken free of his pursuers, I was some 8 seconds ahead - far enough to deny any slipstream, but not far enough to allow for any small errors & with Clive as relentless as ever in his pursuit, I spent the rest of the race just trying to maintain the gap & not chuck it all away at the Loop. WD to Clive & nice to see Clutch on the podium too.

By the way, I also wondered if the server was OK, especially as we had a glitch about 2 laps from the end - I was certain I was about to get disco'ed as the screen flashed but thankfully was able to continue.

Not a massive fan of the Glen, 67 version. Ranks alongside Mexico as one of my worst Papy tracks. As a result, i didn't practice this one and turned up to Qualifying with one of my old reliable set ups for this track.

Think i was on the back row in Qually, though the grid was tight. Its been that long since i've driven here that i was looking on the wrong side of the track for the flagman (its a long way back there), so the start totally caught me out and i departed the grid behind everyone.

Thought i'd try and stick it out for the duration and scraped a 3rd, despite having one off at the loop (school boy error) and having the attentions of the Ferrari of Alex Barresi in front of, and then behind me for 20 laps. His driving was very fair and it kept us both entertained for 20+ laps. I think he crashed with about 10 to go which was a relief as my left 'Clutch' foot was killing me and i was starting to miss a few gears due to not compressing it enough. Then it was just a case of bringing it home. A lucky third i guess, but you've got to be there when the chequered flag falls.

Well done to all finishers, and a quick word for Al Heller, who i've always regarded as being in my ball park speed wise, (no offence Al, you are faster though), so good to see him get a victory in 65 Pro. Nice to have a fresh name at the top. To be fair, Al's got the edge on me nowadays by a few tenths and more, so i must try harder. Well done to Evil for another steady finish and for Natan for bring home that smoking BRM (i think).

Now we have a few big boys tracks coming up, so that'll be fun.  ;)

Actually the Glen is not one of my favourite tracks, but I certainly enjoyed this race.

Qually was incredibly close although I was not even remotely close to pole. I think I started 9th???

I managed to muscle a place off the grid , but the leading pack were already going fast and I was forced to push very hard on cold tyres to get myself back in touch and avoid being dropped behind.
The "freight train" ran for several laps with no-one able to make a move until Tom and Goran exploded at The Loop and disrupted the order.
Al was fortunate to find himself leading with Jethro trying to take any advantage he could find, followed by Natan in his BRM which, as always was very fast on the straights and slightly frustrating in the corners. The Honda is very difficult to wind up with a heavy fuel load and I was struggling to make any impression on Natan. All the while I could see Al and Jethro easing very slowly away.
Then I think Jethro made an error and Natan and I got past into 2nd and 3rd, but still Natan refused to offer a passing opportunity and Al was creeping away.
Eventually I had got a slipstream out of the Esses and up to The Loop to keep me right on Natan's gearbox as we hit the back straight up to Big Bend where I pulled out of the tow and stuck it down the inside. Still Natan tried to defend around the outside and through the lsft hand kink. It was not until some demon braking into The 90 that I finally gained the advantage. It had taken me almost 75% off the lap to make a single pass!!!! :o
I knew that Natan would try and regain the position on the next straight so I had to nail the Esses and keep to the right so that he was forced to go around the outside at The Loop if he wanted the place back.
After about 2 laps I eased out a safety gap and was able to take a more conventional line through the corners and use my extra pace to sneak away after Al, who by now was not even visible in the distance. Fulvio started to hassle Natan and that allowed me some extra breathing space.
I managed to close enough to just catch a glimpse of Al as I exited the Loop on each lap, but Al was playing things cagey and maintaining the gap. I discovered that I was geared about 1 notch too low for max speed as the fuel level dropped  because I started to get towards 13k revs and slowly increasing oil temps when I really pushed hard. So the rest of the race I pushed as hard as I dared without risking a blown engine, but even if I could have gained an extra gear there was no way I was going to catch Al without a mistake on his part.
Grats to Al who took full advantage of the opportunities and to Clutch for a tactical drive to finish on the podium. Natan's determination to finish in his smokey BRM gained him some points in a race that saw many retirees.

Al seems to have moved his performance up a couple notches this season and is now regularly challenging for podiums. In fact things within UKGPL generally are looking very good with so many drivers competing for the podiums in just about every class, which increases the fun factor for all. ;)

Considering this is my first race in about 6 months I'm quite pleased, despite the engine giving way. Bad Climax cylinder in the BT11!

I loaded up an old setup in the car, not knowing what it could offer, so tanked it to 20 laps and just kept plodding round, finding a rhythm. Said rhythm was good enough for 7th on the grid, which became 5th in actuality when Tristan disco'd 20 seconds from the end of qualifying.

Managed to get the jump to 4th by the end of lap 1, which left me a little worried! 4th became 2nd a few laps later when Tom and Goran came together, Al and I both slowed down to avoid the chaos and I briefly had the run on Al, which is as close to the lead as I ever was gonna get!

After making an error and letting Natan and evil through, I tried to follow dutifully, but it was difficult when Natan does his best impression of a mobile chicane, braking as late as possible into the only places to pass. I had good runs on evil at times, but didn't want to risk a collision, so sat behind until a slight error made the engine pop while Fulvio overtook.

Not a bad return, would have been nice to finish the race. Had I survived, I'd have tried to overtake both evil and Natan and then chase down Al.

Happy Christmas, merry 2012!
