Title: UKGPL Season 22 (2011-2012) Novices (65) - Cerne’s Wood - Dec 6
Post by: BadBlood on December 03, 2011, 06:45:42 PM +0000
UKGPL Season 22 65 Novices Trophy
Race 3 Cerne's Wood

Welcome to the third round of the Novices Trophy for Season 22. From a couple of real life challenges to a fantasy track. Although some people don't like fantasy tracks, they do present a different challenge. The major challenge here being avoiding the trees. Cerne's Wood presents some typical English countryside in a fantastic Autumnal setting (unless you have the Spring version). Note that after this race we will be re-assessing the chassis allocations so if you want us to be kind, you'd best not win

As with the previous tracks, there will be crashes and patience is a must. The first lap will be fully moderated within the red zone. The red zone will extend to the last corner of the first lap.

Please check the Season 22 pages for details (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=335&theme=6) regarding rules and the Novices Trophy (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=340&theme=6) pages in particular.

It is very important that drivers are FULLY familiar with the rules relating to Shift-R. EVERY Shift-R MUST be followed by a Stop-and-Go or the driver will be excluded.

Please see the Novices registration thread for an explanation of the chassis allocations shown below:
https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=9196.0

Please ensure that you take a valid chassis for your group. I will be checking.

Worst ever race - useless. That is the last time I go into the woods.

Well, I nearly had the perfect race here tonight.... My BT7 was utterly out-classed on this track and I was miles off the pace in qually but drove a superb and clean race to be in 2nd place, just 12s down on the leader with 5 to go BUT I had Venns Honda catching me..... and passing me.... and driving into me!!!! Not sure who was at fault there but the end result was that I found myself up a tree in a wheel-less motor car........ After my reset and pitstop I rejoined in in 4th place, hoping like hell someone in front would crash, or blow up or something so I could get the podium I felt I so richly deserved when ........ wait for it.......    SCREEN FREEZE!!!!!
So that ended that.

As always, replay is available here (http://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/inc_replaysS22_js.htm). Just select the Novices series and analysis is available if you click on the Archive name.

That analysis is available directly from here (ftp://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/replays/archive/season22/analysis/S22_Novices_R03_2011_12_06_Cernes_Wood/index.html).

The Replay .rar file is available here (ftp://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/replays/archive/season22/novices/S22_Novices_R03_2011_12_06_Cernes_Wood.rar).

Little Red Riding Hood, You sure were looking good

2 shift-R for me. Quite a bit of slaloming at the beginning of the race. I was lapped just before the wall, turn no 6 or 7. If you wanna know the exact spot, it shouldn't be too difficult to find the marks of my teeth on the wall. After that, it was bucolic stuff, counting the run over feral cats along the road, you know, things people do in remote places of the kingdom when they get bored  ....  ::)

At the end, following Nigel who had already lapped me but was getting slower and slower as his engine was agonizing, I felt like a Mustang escorting home a B17.

Well - I am calmer this morning. No practice and it showed. Car was wild and although I can do a 1:52 here I didn't even get close. 2 Shift-R on the opening lap set the tone and every time I got the tyres warm I crashed. I caught Pierre and then slid into the wall. Car was knackered - where to reset? Got nearly to the pits and then waited for a gap. Nearly caught PD again and then crashed again - ho hum. When I rolled the car letting Hendy pass I called it a day. Looking forward to the break. Modding is definitely taking the edge off. Not least because I practice less.

Enjoyed the battle with Pierre such as it was but I am looking forward to beating him at Kyalami. It is pretty even between us at the moment...

Well done on the steady drive to the finish PD. Proves that being consistent is more important than raw speed.

In times of austerity, & the need for job creation, it was good to use this track, which in the aftermath of this race will provide work for brickies, fencing contractors, & tree surgeons for weeks to come. ;D

Not going to mention the first 3 laps I'll save that for the incident reports, but after that I just kept motoring through the field to 4th. Very few I passed, most fell off in front of me. Towards the end I caught 3rd place Rob Venn. Hold on, he's catching second place Jason. Time to back off slightly & get tactical as the combination of racy Jason fuelled high on the adrenilin of circuit hatred & Rob with a whole stable yard full of wild Honda horses could be explosive. They didn't disappoint, & I was up to third. ;)

All I can say is that I crossed the line in 3rd place but what points I'll score after the mods have finished I don't know. Well done everyone. Paul it looked a nightmare when I passed you. Too bad.
Finally this track is the most difficult I have done in 54 Nov races & I practiced it more than any other ever.  I did 9 race laps in the 1.49's which was nice. File this one under, could have, should have.

I would like some feedback on the season so far. I want all the Novices to enjoy it which I hope has happened to some extent. I will also look to you lot to give me a steer on chassis allocations.

I enjoyed the race in the woods, after maneuvering around several cars at the first few corners I made some progress and I think even had the lead for a few laps but the inevitable brain fade saw me into the trees for my first of several visits off piste. I had 3 or 4 stops for shift-r incidents all self inflicted bit managed 6th which I thought ok but really wanted a bit better. As mentioned earlier consistency is king- maybe next time..

Really enjoyed the race even though I was surrounded by BT11s at the start. In the race had a few spins, blew an engine and I'm not sure what happend with Blito. Well done to Hendy you drove a really good race

Not going to mention the first 3 laps I'll save that for the incident reports,

Norm H

You are very kind Norm, sorry again for my stupidness. I did see you had another few incidents, but lucky not with me.

I too required 2 Shift & R's on the first lap, I did a stop and go on the first and second lap. I wasn't sure what to do, so I hope that was the correct thing.

After that, I sort of lost interest as I really was expecting to be near the front. My times were aweful, no where near my pratice laps using the same setup and fuel. I tried to push, but that was a mistake, so I just settled in for some slow laps until the finish. Was surprised to be 5th, but I think it was because people in front had problems, and weather I get the points for 5th is up to the mods.

I would say that this is a great fun track to drive, but to race on it's a nightmare. There is only 1 line so overtaking can only come if there is a mistake, suring the pratice races I saw, and took part in trying to make a clean pass and it was improssible. Added to the fact that because it was Novices there is a huge spread of speed, any out of position cars, or even lapping cars takes a great deal of care, not that I had any problems with that.

I too had done more pratice on this track than any other for Novices, I was really expecting to be quicker, and also higher up. It was my mistake on lap 1 so I've got noone else to blame apart from myself.

Looking forward to the break.
Alastair

I think it was just unfortunate that the track isnt quite straight at that point - I think I strayed into the middle of the circuit instead of holding my own side... doubly saddening as I knew that I had no answer to your Honda power and had really given up the place as lost already!
