Title: UKGPL Season 22 (2011-2012) Novices (65) - Kyalami (1961-67) - Jan 31
Post by: BadBlood on January 30, 2012, 12:52:36 AM +0000
UKGPL Season 22 65 Novices Trophy
Race 4 Kyalami

Welcome to the resumption of the Novices Trophy for Season 22. Back to a Papy track that we all know and love. Kyalami usually has some close racing so hopefully we will shake off the ring rust with some wheel to wheel action.

As with the previous tracks, there will be crashes and patience is a must. The first lap will be fully moderated within the red zone. The red zone will extend to the end of the Leeukop bend on the first lap.

*** NOTE***
As we are at Kyalami, you must ensure that you have the Pit Wall IN PLACE.. Those without the pit wall will risk disqualification. Advantage can be gained without it and in particular, drivers should ensure that they know where the pit entry is WITH THE PIT WALL IN PLACE

The standard Papyrus track has a pit wall but there are patches available that remove it. The absence of a pit wall will not stop you from joining the race but anybody seen by the moderators miraculously driving through the pit wall on the server replay will risk disqualification.

Follow these instructions to restore the wall if you have a mod that has removed it:
METHOD 1:
To place a wall between the pits and the track, rename or remove the kyalami.trk and kyalami.3do files from your kyalami folder.
METHOD 2:
To reinstall the original Papyrus Armco, rename or remove the Armco_s.mip file from your kyalami folder.

Please check the Season 22 pages for details (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=335&theme=6) regarding rules and the Novices Trophy (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=340&theme=6) pages in particular.

It is very important that drivers are FULLY familiar with the rules relating to Shift-R. EVERY Shift-R MUST be followed by a Stop-and-Go or the driver will be excluded.

Please see the Novices registration thread for an explanation of the chassis allocations shown below:
https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=9196.0

Please ensure that you take a valid chassis for your group. THIS IS IMPORTANT AS THE CHASSIS GROUPINGS AND YOUR SEEDING HAS CHANGED. Please check the Novice Chassis thread (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=9986.45). I will be checking.

thanks for all,

I'm very annoyed, because when I was registrated in the biginning season, I miss click, I had click on "less", so now I'm on reserve pilot.
I'm not sure If I can race tomorrow.

Oh dear - got a whizzy new wheel - not used to it and I whacked Norbert off the line, sorry mate. No need to report it - it is in the red zone.

First of all very sorry to Rog, we had a couple of coming together, not much I could of done about either of them, but I’m still sorry we had them in the first place.

Not enough practice for me I think, and overall a very disappointing race.

Qualifying went as well as could be expected, I was expecting to be low 27’s but couldn’t manage it on the day, but it wouldn’t of mattered much so I settled for my time and tried some laps with more fuel.

The race again went as well as could be expected. I got an OK start, and benefited from a accident or two and tried to settle down into a rhythm. I was just behind Miniblood and just in front of Rog. I had a little go at Mini but once Rog was on my tail I let him past. I then followed both of them as Rog tried his best to pass. They had a little moment and slowed unexpectedly in front of me, and I reacted quite slowly which meant that I tapped Rog. Mini blew past me on the straight and again, so I followed him for a few laps. I tried to pass Mini going into turn 1, but he lost it and spun into my path. Rog was right behind us at this point and got involved in our accident. After that I was in front of Rog, but once he caught me again I just let him past.

After that I was alone for the rest of my race. I made a few small mistakes as I was trying to push the car as much as I could. I saw that Miniblood and another driver were catching me again, so I tried to push more. I spun the car and decided I’d had enough, the red mist was down at this point and to save myself doing something stupid I quit.

Overall a really disappointing race and frustrating. I was nowhere in qualifying, even if I was on my PB pace I still would have been nowhere. My race pace was about the same level as qualifying, and I was a sitting duck on the straights. So I’m right back down at the bottom end of the grid again. I hope it’s just practice that I lack, I will try the Honda and see if I can make it drivable for me, otherwise I’ll be in the Cooper again :(

I not going to be at the next race, so at least I’ve now got a month to practice.

Always difficult to choose the best car for the season... One question though - are we not locked into our chassis choices for the whole season? (excepting for the mid-season re-grading of drivers...... )

Anyhow - the race according to Blito.....
I had actually taken the opportunity to get some pre-race practice in on Axel's server and reaped the benefits. I took my Cernes Wood setup and tweaked it a little and found during the fun race that I was battling tyre temps and so dropped the pressures a little and decided I was ready for the Novs race..
My pre-race expectations weren't high - the BT7 is just too slow in a straight line to be a contender on a track such as Kyalami - I really thought 6th place would be the best I could hope for.. I was amazed to be 3rd on the grid!
The start seemed nice and clean from the front runners but as we went round the first few laps it was clear that Norm was struggling with his Honda on full tanks... there was quite a bit of place swapping on those first few laps but the loser from it all was Rog who somehow banged wheels with Rob Venn and ended up spinning off..... Hard chargin's Rob lead lasted only a few laps before his dreams of victory went up in a pall of engine smoke.... and the BT7 was in the lead!
I would like to say at this point that I was comfortable and cruised to the flag but that wasn't the case... with the initial fuel load burnt off, Norm's Honda started to close me down, just a tenth a lap at first but as the cars got lighter Norm got faster.... and as I tried to respond the Brabham's front tyre started to go away from me! I had just resigned myself to losing the lead when we caught the backmarkers..... Badblood spun out of my way, miniblood gave up his fight with Pierre to let me through, Pierre moved offline and gave me the corner when it was his turn - very thoughtfull of them both considering how hard they were scrapping! Norm didn't appear to be so lucky and my lead was stretched enough to give me the gap I needed for the run to the flag.... another couple of laps and I think Norm would have had me!
Anyhow I fought hard to bring home my 3rd career victory ( from 128 starts mind you !) and feel proud to have brought the underdog BT7 home in first place on a power track!
Now just bring on Zolder!!!

I forgot to congratulate you on another fine win, well done to you and the other podium drivers.

My understanding of it, is that we have a free choice of any cars in our group for any race. So I could take a Cooper at Kyalami, and then a Honda at Zolder, etc. If I am wrong please let me know.

You are Jase!  ;D Free choice of Chassis within your assigned group. I hope we have re-graded correctly but we might tweak for a driver or two... It is a new system so we need to get some evidence of it working.

Well done on a fine victory last night. Saw you coming and moved wide to let you through - hit the grass... bugger!

Ah well. Had a nice time chasing Pierre down but catching him was one thing, getting past another! Disappointed with my pace. My Prib was 1:26.7 and that was very achievable but I have a new wheel and I am REALLY not used to it. Very different experience though, much more control but I found that I was braking too much, too early at the point I would have used with my old wheel. The fact that I now have a clutch pedal didn't help either as it is a VERY ineffective brake.  :D

Nice to get Mini and me on at the same time but oddly I had to join via GPL and use the servers internal address - I couldn't join via iGOR. It will be interesting to see if we can both get on the server for the PSC on Friday.

Beause of the issues with joining, I didn't get any qually in and I just had to go with the setup I had. It wasn't great but not disastrous either. What was annoying was that I had to drive with a clipboard for a steering wheel and I couldn't see the rev counter.  >:(

Hoping for better at Zolder but I tried the track out last night and I have to say, I don't like it. Who chose this one? Next year we are going to have some tracks that I really like!

The Honda  always gives an entertaining ride - difficult to drive, but fun. So I really enjoyed this one. Like everyone else who changed cars I only had Monday evening & a bit of race day to practice but after an hour on Monday I had a Honda pb of 1.25.08 compared to BT11 of 1.24.92 after years of driving it. I also had 2 broken engines!. Noted it was difficult to get off the start line.
On pre race chat Sky told someone who asked that the Honda rev limit is 12,500( Nigel & Rob wern't listening  ;D )& absolutely no speed shifting. I stuck to this in the race but not qually,& it lasted. In view of the above I was supprised to be leading after turn 1 & also still at the end of lap1. I am cautious on cold tyres but hoped to get away after say, 3 laps, but Rob had too much race pace for me & flew past using the tow & some demon braking. As at Surfers JB placed his BT7 carefully so that I had to give him room. Rob was comfortable in front till his engine blew & the gap between JB & me varied between 1 & 4 seconds. I was catching at the end but too late my fastest lap was the last one.
The only real chance I had was when JB caught the back markers who were involved in a close battle but he's as good on the grass as he is on tarmac ::). A deserved victory & well done 3rd Giovani. Bad luck Rob, that happened to me once, & Hendy(disco I believe).
Nice to get an opportunity to change car that's why I went BT7 season 21. It will be more difficult now than the BT11 but it will be.....er.....interesting.

I didn't practice much for this race. When I found out that I was getting the same top speed with all the cars (except the BT7), I decided to be rational for once: I went for the sound of the engine and the look of the dashboard !  ;D
The race ? I remember one thing: I managed to keep Badblood away from my gearbox for quite some time but finally, I choked with two laps to go and  I missed a turn. I resent the fact that Mauvais Sang didn't even slow down to check if I was OK but as you know, life is a jungle. I do know it will be a different story on the Ring next friday.

You should know there is a fix (http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=7246&st=0&gopid=67024&#entry67024) for this...

As for driving in Hiking Boots - no I don't, but the results are the same....  :D

I enjoyed Kyalami and thought a 5th place finish was better than I expected. I decided on the honda after a chassis change but little pre race running hampered my efforts. I never quite managed to get round the slow left hander late in the lap- I took it in 2nd for the first half of the race and 1st gear in the second and my times improved a little. The last 3 or so laps were entertaining when I closed in on Nigel who had been 10 seconds in front but was suddenly within a second or two after some incident or other- I managed to get along side at the end of the straight after a good tow with one lap to go but opted to duck back in and try again but the chance never quite came. I believe its Zolder next time around and an all new track for me I'll try to get some track time before race day.

Grats to podium and Blito for a great win in the bt7.
Disappointing race for me started 2nd on grid then lap 2 crowthorne turned in to early and had contact or warp contact with venn and spun off, when rejoined audio gone ape and engine sounded like donald duck quacking in my ears for rest of race. Had another couple of offs avoiding incidents, but car kept going , was way back  but got a couple of places and happyal let me pass and with some drivers discos finished 6th.

Loved the bt11 but back in the coop is not that bad, just struggle to get that bit of extra grunt for the straights, how the hell does Blito get that bt7 to fly (just jealous).

I think the BT7 is the easiest car to setup I have ever come across.... It has an abundance of grip and superb traction out of slow corners. I'm also finding it really easy to get the front of the car into the apex of the corners without the back stepping out, meaning I can get the power down much earlier than most others. If anyone wants to try my setup for the BT7 I'm willing to share - just drop me a PM and I'll upload it somewhere!

Incidentally.... do you realise I was only 7th fastest in the race?

Thanks for reply and info Blito, might try that setup of yours sometime, but know its not just the car or setup, its having the skill to drive it that counts.

I don't often comment on races- leaving such duties to those with a better turn of phrase. However, firstly and most importantly congratulations to the podium, especially to Jason for a deserved win, and to all other finishers. Some of the guys new to the Honda seem to have got  a handle on it very quickly and I had a  hard job of it.
My race was a mixture of good and bad, as seems the norm this season, and after a terrible start where I lost 3 places on the grid I made it up by L2 (Rob and Rog's punch-up at T1 helped :)) The car was behaving well in these first laps and when I went past Johnny into 4th I couldn't believe my good luck....until the very next lap when I went wide at sunset and lost 2 places :(. That was the story of the race for me- a few good laps then an off or a bad corner exit when either the front tyre or rear melted on me. One high point was blasting between Johnny and Paul on lap 18, the gap looks smaller on the replay ;D. But then of course I had Johnny's attention all the way to the flag, and it was close at the end :P (If you had got past Johnny I couldn't have kept up).
A good race overall then, I'll be happy with 4th,(thanks to a couple of drop-outs ahead) but I must get a setup sorted for full race distance.
Good luck all at Nurby tonight and see you next week>

Nigel omits to mention that I was a lap down and trying to let Johnny through without compromising my own lap too much... the whizzy Honda gave me a bit of a fright as I remember!
