Title: UKGPL Season 22 (2011-2012) Privateers (67) - Zeltweg (Österreichring) - Feb 5
Post by: Ross Neilson on February 03, 2012, 04:47:20 PM +0000
The Privateers return to Europe for the fifth round of the series; we're in scenic Austria at the Osterreichring. Martin Hunt nearly made it four winners from four races at St Jovite but tyre trouble let Ross Neilson through to win and take a narrow lead in the points table. We should be in for a good battle here with plenty of slipstreaming around the long straights and fast sweeps of this track.

Replaced my AVG Antivirus with AVAST as Bernie recommended but still had problems tonight.  First praccy was fine solid 35-36 fps.  Pulled in and then second praccy had 25 fps - car was undrivable.  Left server and switched antivirus off completely.  Rejoined did praccy solid 35-36 fps again.  When race started back to 25 fps again.  I drove a few laps to see if fps got better but it didn't.  Had a couple of spins and then a got in the way of Hendy (I think).  Very sorry about that, I tried to get on the grass to get out of the way but you were committed.

After that I decided to quit in case I ruined someone's race.  I need to sort this out before the Historics on Tuesday.  But I've no idea what the problem is :taz:

Good luck Sky and Ross.  You were both very quick.

Sorry to hear that Phil was looking forward to battling with you in the race.

Is your issue just at Zeltweg or all tracks? I've had issues here before where the fps drops after starting off OK. It is one of the more resource-hungry tracks, in my experience at least.

I had low fps at turn one and five. The track wasnt running too well for me neither, but was the same no matter how many cars were around me.

Im using Avira, never had problems with it, I dont even turn it off.

Good luck Sky and Ross.  You were both very quick.

Luck? Whats that thing? Eh? Anybody seen it? Tell me where its hiding... I want to find it, strangle it, burn it, hang it, drown it, spread it's ashes in the toilet... Just tell me where it is....  :hang:

A poor performance by me, that must be the worst I've driven and still managed to win, mainly due to Sky's misfortune.

I shared the front row with poleman Sky again and took the lead at T1 so all was well initially, but my first spin of the race let Sky through and there was no catching him after that. I recovered to fend off Martin and settle into a solid second place which I was happy with.

With about eight laps to go I had my second spin which allowed Dave Rainier onto my tail, we battled for a few laps but eventually I shook him off. Then on the penultimate lap Sky disappeared from Prib and I went off for the third time!! Luckily I had a few seconds back to Dave and held on to take the flag.

My sympathies go to Sky who is clearly quick (three poles in five races) but just needs a little luck to get that first win. You certainly deserved it today.

Well done to Dave and Bernie who joined me on the podium; see you all for the next one at Brands Hatch.

All tracks all mods since I installed an antivirus program.  I built my new PC just before the christmas break and I didn't bother loading on an antivirus program until recently.  I did the 60fps races with no virus protection and I had a solid 60fps throughout.  So I assume it is the antivirus causing the problems but I don't want to risk no anti virus protection at all.

I've had another look at the settings in Avast.  I only disabled the file checking not all the other stuff so perhaps it was Avast causing problems.  I'll try killing it completely next time or I might try Avira as Sky suggests.

Phil,

I run AVG with no problem at all so that is not what is causing your fps drop. You haven't got power management issues have you. They can be a right bugger on laptops and sometimes helpful windows updates can modify power profiles on laptops like turning your hard disk off etc. That is where I would be tempted to start.

Totally unconvincing 5th place....after a multitude of spins, half-spins and run-offs. Apologies to Mike Turner....I got a bit close and we both took a huge lag hit when your car jumped right, then back left. Dave Curtis for clipping you amid one of my many spins......you brake way harder in T1 than I do and I avoided rear-ending you by braking hard enough to lock the rears, then unfortunately tagged you in the resultant spin. And sorry to Bill for knicking 5th place from you on the last lap. If you'd not locked up at the right hander before the back straight....I doubt I'd have got by you. Didn't really deserve it.
Congratulations to my partner in grime, Ross, for another classy win. And to the remaining podium place getters Dave and Bernie.

Excellent choice of track. I have raced here several times in the ‘65’s which are much tamer beasts.
Rather disappointed that I couldn’t get the 1.47s I did the day before in practice but not a bad overall result. Edged up to 5th spot until my one major spin in the Bosch Curve which required a bumper car U-turn off the Armco. This allowed Geoff to close up & a few interesting laps until he nipped past me on the very last lap.
Great derive by Bernie who seemed to get better & better carving his way through the field to get a podium. Lap 10 or so he overtook me & Dave C in the space of two turns.
Brands Hatch next  - should be good

Grats Ross for your 3rd consecutive victory !!!
Now you are the number one for the "Privateers" title !

Due to skiing holidays, I will not be present in Brands Hatch ...so I count on you, Sky, Martin, Phil, Bernie, Hendy, Geoff and everybody else to take a maximum of points to Ross :)

It's not a track I favour, Zeltweg.  Apparently, I don't know the correct way to Zelt, despite subjecting myself to much dancing about, and the odd pirouette!  So starting from mid-grid, was no surprise.

My desperation to escape the inevitable first corner calamatizations, was well founded, as clutterization commenced immediately behind me.  After settling fortuitously into 4th, Phil's early misfortune led me to 3rd, and I decided my 'Zelting' must be improving!  The high point came, as Ross wrong footed himself, and my Brabham waltzed it's way into 2nd.  Though, after all of 200 meters, he inconveniently put his right foot down, and without further ado, made a quick step off into the distance! :notworthy:

Thereafter, I led David on a merry dance, for more than half the race.  The gap was narrow, and helped by a couple of wobbly moments, he arrived at last, and all at once!  We banged door handles rather harshly, and he decided to leave immediately.  We were lucky not to get seriously tripped up, as I'd neglected to remove a replacement sound file, which made the Ferrari much quieter than usual - I'd expected much more 'clodhopping', before his arrival!   :cowboy:

For the remainder, the race was quiet.  Except for once misplacing a wheel, with the need to pit, which gave a persistent Bernie a podium spot.  It was nonetheless for me, a better result than expected.  So full marks to those up front, for the poise and grace they showed in winning! :hammer:

'twas not an easy task for me , although I did an OK qually lap for once (p5) I had trouble keeping my Brabby (which had the handling characteristics of a Lemming ) on track , until the tyres had reached race temps (about 3 laps ).  Thus my start was a little tardy and perhaps over cautious, allowing several cars to sail by on the long run up to T1 where I arrived alongside Geoff and Blito who were disputing the cornering rights .

The outcome was one of those pile ups that we all love to see but hate to be part of . Fortune smiles not just on the brave but also on the cowardly too and I was able to carry on with all the Brabby bits intact , so began the forward charge to regain some much needed soggy team points .

Once more into the breach again with  Billy (the Kid) Nobrakes doggedly fending off my attention for lap after lap until a kami kazi pass into the Rindt curve got me through aided, it must be said,  by some dodgy armco dancing from which once more lady luck found favour with me .

After that excitment it was a matter of driving as fast as possible within the limits of the tarmac to put as much free air as possible between me and my persuers  who seemed to be having fun behind .

My concentration was so hard , I didnt even notice my P3 untill the last couple of laps  or so  :-[

back in the pits my mechanics had to prise my hands from the steering wheel as I had been gripping it so tight , my eyeballs were bleeding , and was sure I had ground the enamel from my teeth .

What you might call a hard but lonely battle    :o

Grats to Ross ( who will stop him ) and Rainier , all others who finished and commiserations to Maddog magee (again) and team mate Mike for his hard luck

Brands next ? ( I hate Brands )

(mind you I said that about about Zeltweg before the race )  ;) ;) ;)

Nope, wasn't me arguing with Jason....I arrived at the party a little later, to find cars lounging about everywhere and nowhere to go but join the throng.....

After a bit more testing I think I have got to the bottom of this.  It seems the Direct3D V2 rasterizer is incompatible with my graphics card.  My card works fine with the OpenGL V2 rasterizer so I'll use that in tonight's Historic race.
