Title: UKGPL Season 22 (2011-2012) Novices (65) - Zolder - Feb 14
Post by: BadBlood on February 12, 2012, 10:12:59 PM +0000
UKGPL Season 22 65 Novices Trophy
Race 5 Zolder

Welcome to the 5th round of the Novices Trophy for Season 22. First time at Zolder which was chosen as something different... It certainly is, it is horrible... ah well.

As with the previous tracks, there will be crashes and patience is a must. The first lap will be fully moderated within the red zone. The red zone will cover the whole of the first lap.

Please check the Season 22 pages for details (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=335&theme=6) regarding rules and the Novices Trophy (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=340&theme=6) pages in particular.

It is very important that drivers are FULLY familiar with the rules relating to Shift-R. EVERY Shift-R MUST be followed by a Stop-and-Go or the driver will be excluded.

Please see the Novices registration thread for an explanation of the chassis allocations shown below:
https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=9196.0

Please ensure that you take a valid chassis for your group. THIS IS IMPORTANT AS THE CHASSIS GROUPINGS AND YOUR SEEDING HAS CHANGED. Please check the Novice Chassis thread (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=9986.45). I will be checking.

Simple solution - hold your very own valentines night on wedsnesday instead! Restaurants will be much quieter ( and cheaper ) AND you wont get pestered by the gypsies selling red roses AND you get to drive at Zolder AND your wife will love you for taking her out . WIN WIN WIN WIN :)

I really hate that track... >:(

Looking at your profile's picture, I can understand why :(

1982 was a tragic year for F1 (like so many other before 1995)

This track may not be anyone's favourite but I think it will give us some spectacular crashes- I'm thinking of the tree on the exit of the fast left hander that if your honest with yourself you have been pulling twigs from your radiator several times already and even the chicane on the run to the line can pull your wheels off. Should be interesting.

Last night was fun for me - I took the kids swimming and didn't get back until well after 9pm. Pleased with the progress the kids are making in the pool - well worth missing a race for :)

That is nice mate. Hope to see you next time though.

Strange one for me. Did a bit of praccy and was running reasonably comfortably in the high 1:39s which I thought might be competitive for a top 5. Knew I needed to be accurate though. In qually, GPL froze three times - odd. Had to reboot and only had time for one lap. Took it nice and easy early on and found myself racing Nigel and Norm courtesy of their Lap 4 incident. Norm was quick but erratic and I had a handy lead on Nigel. As the tyres warmed I could slide round the corners a bit more until I slightly overcooked it and got stuck in the mesh fencing. Frustrating as I had to wait for Nigel to pass to reset. In trying to chase him down I lost the calmness needed and span a few times - ironic really because smooth is so much better. A further reset completely scuppered me but I was relieved to bring it home in seventh.

One of my better drives actually and I am feeling quite positive about the second half of the season after the disaster that was Kyalami.

One moral dilemma. I KNOW that Norm and Nigel had an incident on Lap 4 and I could move up a place... but will it get reported? Should I report it myself? hehe. Happy to think of that one as a Racing Incident between two of my mates. Nice racing with you boys, even if it was brief. Nigel - I'll beat you one day!  :D

Like most bokes I can talk to the Mrs, read the paper & watch TV all at the same time. So why can't I Drive a GPL car, watch the mirrors & watch pribluda all at once!. Made up my mind this race to give only an occasional glance at pribluda & concentrate on the other two.
My occasional glance on lap 1 showed Rob close but a gap to Rog. That'll do we'll get away & sort it between the two of us. So when Rob challenged at turn one my Honda got away from me a bit & he was through. The big shock was Rog was right behind. I got all scrappy then & started missing gears & this is why I slowed on the run down to the last chicane. Funny how in all that's going on I thought clearly. Turn into the chicane on the race line & Rog will definitely run into my gearbox & then anything could happen. So I didn't turn in BUT I didn't realise he had several others right behind him :o. Inherited 4th when Johnny fell back for some reason. My race pace was scrappy & poor most of the time - nothing new there then. Thank goodness a number of regulars didn't show up or I would have been further back. Well done Rob Giovanni & Rog
These pole positions are done ignoring the rev counter & speed shifting. Can't drive like that in the race the car won't stand it. I'll have to re think.
Like Paul(B Blood) I don't want to report the Nigel incident but I will if I have to (its complicated). There are going to be penalties in this race for certain :-X
Anyway I'll enjoy being top of the championship whilst it lasts. I'm off to print the table out to give to all my friends - a couple of copies should do it :'(

thank you to all the team for organizing this championship. It's not easy for me, I'm a beginner, but I learned to stay on the track to the end. :wheelchair: After the time comes where I will be more efficient, I hope! ;D ;D

Didn't think I was going to do very well here as I didn't do much pratice and I was going to use the cooper up until half and hour before the race. Used most of pratice to set the  gearing up on the Honda, then towards the end of the session went for a quick lap and got second which I was happy with. Race started got away reasonably well and just slotted in to second, I was quite happy following Nhance as we were pulling away from a pair of coopers and settled myself in keeping an eye on the revs. A few laps in got a good run on Nhance into the first corner and took the lead, got myself in a nice rhythm looking after the car and still extending my lead. Towards the end of the race all the traffic was really good and gave me lots of space (thanks Guys).
I have never looked at the rev counter so much and been so careful with gear changes before

Thanks all

I got a reasonable start in the cooper passing one car off the line and slotting into about 4th or 5th, an early incident up ahead gave me another place and then I set about the car in front who was roguk- I got close to him but several early unforced errors slid me back and put the gap to rog to about 10 seconds which took me about 15 laps to close. About 5 laps from home I realised Giovanni was closing in on me and with 3 to go the 3 of us were very close. On the penultimate lap I got a little over excited and slid wide getting stuck in a hedge which cost me a shift-r and stop and go. My best finish ever was on the cards but alas it was only to be 5th :) Thanks to the new driver(s) who were very generous with the space.

Enjoyable race for me, start 5 laps spent trying to keep up with Nhance and Rob in the hondas, 5th lap Nhance missed gears which let me pass, next 15 laps dicing with Johnny for 2nd place, last lap Giovani pushing and we kissed coming into jackyickx curve sent me spinning but car not damaged and finished 3rd. Great race Great fun. Grats to Rob on win.
