Title: UKGPL Season 22 (2011-2012) Porsche - Zeltweg (Österreichring) - Feb 17
Post by: Geoff65 on February 13, 2012, 11:26:20 AM +0000
Season 22 - Porsche Super Cup
Race 5, Zeltweg (Österreichring)

In roughly the same neck of the woods as our previous battlefield, Zeltweg in Austria is a longish track of a little under 6km in length. It retained the layout we are using tonight up until 1976. After that a chicane or two were put in around 1977....then in 1997 it was completely destroyed and became the A1-Ring. Very safe. If you like safe, stay out of motorsport and knit!!

The following 3 paragraphs are from Ferdinand Trauttmansdorff:

The original OestereichRing start/finish straight, just after the pit exit, used to continue in a straight line up a steep hill, then turned gradually right after the crest. Isn't that where Donohue crashed? A chicane was added after that at the top of the hill before the right-hand bend. The much-shortened start/finish straight of the new A1-Ring now turns sharply to the right at the base of the hill.

Also both of the original high speed curves that used to drop steeply away to the right, have now been completely re-profiled. To restrict the huge sustained speeds of the original sweeping curves, both of the new curves are now squared off.

It will surely be much "safer" in this configuration, but it's a shame that such a beautiful track had to be neutered like this. I wonder if they've also improved the sight-lines at all over the blind hill where Stefan Johannson obliterated that deer?

Please check the Season 22 pages for details (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=335&theme=6) regarding rules and the Porsche Super Cup (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=342&theme=6) pages in particular.

UKGPL3 isn't listening. Bah humbug. Tried the Porsche here in BREASTS - I was crap as per...  >:(

Oh well, see you all tomorrow then... ;D

Shouldn't be a problem. Officially there isn't any substitution. Unofficially, it is my server and my team and I do the imports and I am Chief Mod, so there.... ;D

See you tomorrow Mark.

Not sure if my sound files for this track are corrupt - the crowd noise as you go past the pits is really annoying me. It sounds like a stylus jumping on a record, which is on a record player on a big (ferris) wheel (i.e. it goes loud and then quiet)!!

Has anyone else noticed this?
How would I disable the crowd sound?

Cheers

Arf

Same for me, i have deleted .waw files from .dat archive in track directory to eliminate this annoyance (this can be do with doodat utility from https://www-lagring.telia.se/Shares/Home.aspx?ShareID=e441c07b-7834-40dc-8bb4-0a1ff876a4bc).

Sorry to everyone on my server there - the PC crashed. I've noticed a few issue with this track over last few days, so I'm starting to get nervous.

I know the mods keep a list of tracks that can't be used for online racing, and that Z(O)71 clearly isn't on it, else we wouldn't be here...... but is anyone else noticing stuff? I've never had terrible lag on my own server before!

What I have noticed is more lag - full stop. Internet is busy...

Pity the crowd won't shutup....

Ha ha, I had actually forgotten about the ******crowd because I was concentrating so hard on where the car might be...

..I say this because I am getting loads of screen freezes as I go down the main straight. They last anything from 1-5+ secs, and if I get one near the top of the hill then I'm in the fence outside the track on the corner before I can do anything about it.

If I had anything better to do tonight, I'd be off to do it, cos I'm not sure its worth racing..... sadly I don't so I will...for as long as the gods of freeze allow me to anyway....

1. Guys, 'sorry' messages are against the rules during race and qualifying. I don't give a toss how sorry you are. Messages are distracting - apologise in the forum.

2. If you are on your out lap from the pits GET OUT THE WAY of those that aren't. You clearly thought you'd just drive away from me, but you just got in the way of a promising lap....

Apologies to my team mates, but I retired because I just couldn't be arsed any more. I got screen freeze/judder 4 times in 11 laps - this frequently left me the interesting challenge of working out where the track was. I was going backwards, and life's too short....

Unlucky m8, I've had a few problems lately.  Still not sure if I have found out what it is but it was OK tonight after I stopped a few services (anti virus, apple update etc) it seemed to be OK.

As for the race I didn't qualify well because we had visitors and I only got the chance to put a couple of laps in on race fuel.  The race itself was fantastic while it lasted.  I managed to pick up some places and ended up battling with Axel and Piero for a dozen or so laps.  Swapping places all the time, great fun and superb driving from Axel.  Very close but no crashes  :thumbup1:  Then with about 10 laps to go my son came into the room and I lost concentration for a spit second.  A wheel on the grass and I spun backwards into the armco and I was out >:(.  Pity there was a chance of a podium if Axel and Piero had obliged  ;)

:P I am absolutely clueless ...what to do to enjoy these PSC ?

did practise the whole day , PB 1-50-25 and worked out an very comfortable race setup .
well , P5 till server kicked me out . rejoin , but server almost forgot my practise time .
Is that the server (ukgpl_3) we payed for ? ???
ok second short run . P6 by luck . All went fine during first lap . one lap later hunting PvB for P4.
Then pribluda shows a car in front that is gonna to be lapped . easy situation I thought as it it was downhill 2nd straight . But somehow that driver managed to chrashed his car wrong way round on these straight .
got fragmented into atomic pieces .

Hardly can remember a PSC race I crossed the finish line .
Say no more pro rules arent good to make precious freetime enjoyable.

Almost a good race from me there.
I took the honour of slowest qualifier on server one, only the timeless Badblood starting from behind me. We all seemed to be nice and careful at the start and we quickly settled into our races. For me this meant battling with BB for the honour of not being last and great fun it was! Sadly it didn't last long with BB rattling the barrier quite hard in the final turn of lap 7 or 8 - I wonder if there was some lag contact between us as I felt nothing? The rest of the race was a steady cruise for the points and I picked up many places from the misfortune of others but with just 3 laps to go had some misfortune of my own... a brief  lapse of concentration and a wheel was on the grass and the resulting tank-slapper left me stranded the wrong side of the armco!
You know in all my GPL career, I don't think I have ever managed to finish a race at Zeltweg!

No it is T7_2.  UKGPL_3 is provided free by our Chief Mod, Badblood.

I am very sorry that you got chucked off Nicky. You will see you appear in the results twice :( The server is a 'proper' HP server and the connection is a business class ADSL connection so it should be solid enough for most racing but it isn't fully commercial. I have discoed off T7 though and that IS commercial! Sometimes stuff happens... not that that is much consolation.

As for the idiot that punted you off. I'll tell him off - it was Mini (my son Joseph) and he is very sorry. He was having frame rate issues :(

The problems people had may have been down to the fact that I was on T7 but all the traffic goes through my one router...

To the race...

As Jason said we had some fun battling over last. I think there must have been lag because I was going wide to let Jase have some racing room but I had passed the outside apex and suddenly KABOOM. I was over the armco and facing the wrong way. Which was a shame 'cos we were having fun as Jason had waited for me after my first spin.

I span a couple more times but was clocking 1:56-1:59 which is slow but steady. In front of me people just kept falling off. I saw Ronnie's exhaust pop as he lapped me and I passed a stricken Blito with 3 to go which was lucky as I was two laps down... kept it on the black stuff to bring it home in sixth and I have to say it was probably my best drive - slow but steady and I looked after the car.

Very pleased even if I didn't blow anyone away... Thanks to Mark for subbing and wd on 4th.

BTW Anyone know who Gio was driving for - if, as I suspect, it was Team Coyote, I will have to amend their seasons results to create an Admin team.

Let me know!

Paul,
Frame rate's were fine at my end, solid 36 all night. ( aren't they more the user's machine related ?? ). Other than the mass disco during qualifying, on lap 10 there was a huge spike on the meter's & so much lag, that I dropped back from Alex when he disappeared a couple of times. It cleared up after 30 sec's or so, the server was fine for the rest of the race.

Cheers,

Ron.

Same happened to me Paul.
Great battle with Maxim and Dave for almost all the race after my spin on lap 1.
Sorry Dave for the touch, at last turn, you seemed rebounding on the rail and I had a little warp. Later I had again a warp at last turn and Maxim went by.

Perfect FPS for me, both in quali than in race, also if i have reduced viewing distance on track at 500 m following an old suggestion by Ginetto (in various parts of the track, this value is set over 1 km and this can be cause of disco or screen freeze).

Yes Alex! Same here...
The only bad warping car was Arf's, who disappeared  :o after some laps.

My race was great fun as long as it lasted. I had a great battle with Phil and Marco for about 20 laps,
unfortunately Phil had his moment and than I was trying too hard to get rid of Marco the next lap, so I did a big braking mistake in lap 23.
Had learned over the distance that my braking into Bosch was too early...
This last time it was too late and I spun into the armco backwards what damaged my engine.

Cu at Pacific

Ironic this, as I was trying a wired connection for a change. Apart from the last PSC at the Ring, I am usually wireless. I had problems with this track in practice races - I was warping when I ran a session (warping on your own connection - is that normal???), so I am very suspicious about the track rather than anything else.

Paul, I'm afraid I didn't notice my frame rate, but everything looked fine when the screen wasn't freezing. I even managed some close racing for a bit. I managed a very satisfying pass at the fast T1....until the pit board message the next lap suggested it was Phil.....might have been less aggressive if I'd realised it was my team mate

Yes, this track is very demanding for a PC and even more when all use the same car.

Doing some practice at Wednesday with BREASTS (60fps!) I learned that all GPU settings have to be perfect for stable fps.

I've never changed it and it should be a good thing to adapt it when FPS are low but, how to change it ?

It's built in in the track files, only track builder can do it and generate a new 3do.

1 - extract from file trackname.dat the two files trackname.trk and trackname.3do (with doodat utility : https://www-lagring.telia.se/Shares/Home.aspx?ShareID=e441c07b-7834-40dc-8bb4-0a1ff876a4bc);
2 - use FB_ADJ_M3 from here : http://srmz.net/index.php?app=core&module=attach&section=attach&attach_id=1133 to adjust visual distance long the track (remind to activate the modification of more cells, the checkbox is far down on the right);
3 - save new file .3do (reducing the visual distance give you an FPS gain at the cost of seeing drawing the circuit at the horizon, you see also http://wiki.grandprixlegends.info/index.php?title=GPL_Track_Creating_-_trk23dow_-_FB ).
All this can also help to avoid disco in certain tracks (i.e.: Le Mans).

To be honest I don’t understand how fps could be different online to offline .
My knowledge how GPL handles data is way to deficient I guess.
Always thought that none a single `GPL graphic data ` is sent via internet , but only kind off `track positions data `. But how can those data effect fps ?
Explanation I can imagine may be that once `arriving track position data `cant implemented/assigned in time coz of too low fps on local (players) PC , GPL starts to calculate ,which needs extra time ; leads to delayed trackposotions data sent back to server ; and now server is in situation to start calculate . interaction became unbalanced .
But if so , all must suffer by decreasing  fps ; instead only the one with bad fps from beginning , is served with even more bad/low fps .

I wouldn’t been surprised if my above thoughts are plain nonsense !!!

Must say I never noticed fps drops related by being online on my system .
If I havnt any fps probs offline , I havnt any online ….
Well , I am not using Pribluda`s fps meter  , but ( guess ) the one comes via GPL ; did check show fps inside gplshift.ini and use Digital Display Modifier to increase the size . To me fps appears in upper right corner of screen .
Am I doing any wrong maybe ?

e.c. : even in case one or all of the red bar parameters are extreme high , my fps isn’t effected…..

I think (but I am not sure) that GPL paints the screen every time the system gets an update on position. If positional updates are missed because your connection is poor or your AV program is keeping the system busy, fps drops.

Probably worth asking on SRMZ.

I'm sorry Axel, but I've left my server alone because I was busy with my child's homeworks so I was not able to come in time for the breasts race.

Anyway, why when I watch for a replay created while driving my Porsche, what I see are only Chaparrals ???

Thanks.

Thx Alex for upating, it's long time I don't build tracks so I'm not updated about the new utility. :)
Ciao

What about modify the view distance on track ?
I've never changed it and it should be a good thing to adapt it when FPS are low but, how to change it ?
1 - extract from file trackname.dat the two files trackname.trk and trackname.3do (with doodat utility : https://www-lagring.telia.se/Shares/Home.aspx?ShareID=e441c07b-7834-40dc-8bb4-0a1ff876a4bc);
2 - use FB_ADJ_M3 from here : http://srmz.net/index.php?app=core&module=attach&section=attach&attach_id=1133 to adjust visual distance long the track (remind to activate the modification of more cells, the checkbox is far down on the right);
3 - save new file .3do (reducing the visual distance give you an FPS gain at the cost of seeing drawing the circuit at the horizon, you see also http://wiki.grandprixlegends.info/index.php?title=GPL_Track_Creating_-_trk23dow_-_FB ).
All this can also help to avoid disco in certain tracks (i.e.: Le Mans).
