Race 7 Nurburgring

Welcome to the 7th round of the Novices Trophy for Season 22. First time for the Novices at Nuremberg's NordSchleife which is bloody hard! This is by far the longest Papy track and was known as 'the green hell'. It is a such a long circuit that spaces will open up but beware, there are crashing opportunities around every corner and if you have to reset six times in one lap (and I have  :D) you won't have enough laps to take your Stop 'n' Go's and that will mean I have to make lots of adjustments :(

Only five laps so shouldn't be too bad but if you do not know this track, get some practice in!. The race might take upwards of fifty minutes and if you get lapped you haven't done too well. The other thing to bear in mind is that you might have to hang around for ten minutes after qualification but pole position here really isn't that important!

The first lap will be fully moderated within the red zone. The red zone will cover the first sector of the first lap up to the bridge after Aremberg .

It is very important that drivers are FULLY familiar with the rules relating to Shift-R. EVERY Shift-R MUST be followed by a Stop-and-Go or the driver will be excluded.

Please ensure that you take a valid chassis for your group. THIS IS IMPORTANT AS THE CHASSIS GROUPINGS AND YOUR SEEDING HAS CHANGED. Please check the Novice Chassis thread (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=9986.45). I will be checking.

There are some new faces potentially amongst us who have been assigned to Group I. Other drivers have also had seedings changed as part of an ongoing review. If you feel you have been wrongly seeded, please let me know.

Qualifying may start before 9pm, if so, Reserve drivers should leave the server when 35 minutes of qualifying remains and only rejoin when 30 minutes of qualifying is left. This is to ensure that Full Time drivers get priority in joining.

Please restrict chat to pit messages if necessary, and this includes the end of the race, until all running drivers have completed the necessary laps.

The Novice races are run under Int Long rules and all incidents in the Lap 1 red zone will be moderated.


65 Patch: The 2.02 Release of the 65mod can and should be used. You need a working installation of the 65 mod to install the 2.02 Update. All the 65 Mod files can be found here (ftp://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/Mods/1965)

In the Novice Registration thread it says 4 laps, I take it that this has been changed to 5?

Have you seen the 65 lap record here....8.17...             '8.17' :P nearly a minute better than I can muster

TWO minutes better than I can muster..... And to think I did a 6:50 in Rfactor!!!!  Admittedly in a 2005 BMW F1 :D

A Minute!!! What, I hope you're not that quick. The record is nearly 2 minutes better than I can do, and even then I can hardly do a complete lap.

Even so, I still love this place, it's a great challenge. I’m certainly not expecting any type of result here, but I hope I enjoy it.

Who has been on my server yesterday evening at Nurby with mod 65 ?
We had a nice race. Crash cars on 1st half of 1st lap but then...a real nice chase to the driver escaped from the initial crash !

Never raced this track always hated it as crashed at most turns, but last night was determined to give it a go but still u/s for me, then installed graphic update which transformed the track and made it a joy to drive, managed a few laps with no crash and got a lap time of 9/26 (no were near the lap time of Johnny), prob for me track is so long can only remember 50%.

Where did you find the graphic update? It sounds like a good update to install.

I don't know the way either, I know the first bit, and the end bit but most of the middle is still a mystery to me. You’re faster than me anyway, I see this race as more of a battle against the track, rather than against other drivers. But that might just be because I'm so slow I'll be at teh back anyway.

To be honest I don't know why I chose the track - I am totally useless here - I struggle to get to sub eleven minutes! Ah well - its a challenge. See you all tonight.

Hi Al this update not so demanding on graphics ( http://www.f1legends.ch/update/circuits/nurb.php) less foliage and trees.

Fun race for me, I enjoyed it and was surprised to be involved in an almost race long battle with Nigel and Fabio :) It was enjoyable to race both of you.

Before the race my PB was 10:25, my goal for this race was to beat 10 minutes. I didn’t know the Nürburgring track very well so during my practice I was trying my best to learn it. I improved a lot, but I still can’t say I know the track very well, even during the race some parts of the track were surprising me.

During Qualifying I set my PB with a 9:12, which I was very happy with, that’s much faster than I had ever managed before so at least I could see a result of my practice. It put me 8th on the grid, which I had to settle for, as there was no way I could match some of the faster times.

As the race started I held back a little and eased myself into the challenge. After about a third of the lap I started to settle and was happy my car and tyres had come up to temperature. I think I was a little behind Nigel and Fabio at this stage but was just about to keep them in view. They both made a series of small mistakes which put me slightly ahead. Nigel and Fabio were both quite a bit faster than me, and there was no point racing them at the ring, so when ever they got right behind me I eased up and let them past, where I could do so without losing much time myself. This tactic seem to work well for me, as multiple times I managed to pass their spinning cars.

After 4 laps, Nigel was just in front, and Fabio was just behind. About this time I made a series of mistakes, which caused a few spins for me. I lost quite a bit of time and Nigel got away. Fabio obviously had a few spins himself because he was still quite near me. Going into the last lap, I had a bit of a cushion between myself and Fabio, but couldn’t relax much because he was still a lot faster than me and I saw him slowly closing in on me from Prib. About half way around the lap I made my biggest mistake which required me to take a Shift & R, I couldn’t take a stop and go because I crossed the line before the pit lane. Fabio was now right behind me and I could hear his engine. I crossed the line just in front of him, but I guess I’m due a time penalty that will put him back in front of me.

Overall I’m happy with my race. I certainly improved quite a bit around here and was involved in a fun race with other drives. I expected to be more or less by myself for the race, so that was a nice surprised. The one thing I didn’t expect was the speed of the top Novices, that was a quick pace at the front so well done to the podium, it was well deserved.

I enjoyed Nürburgring, and I for one would vote for this track to be included again. Thank you Paul for selecting this one. What does everyone else think? Was including this track for the Novices good?

I can never get enough of Nurb so I wouldn't mind seeing it again.

Honestly I was expecting more of you in the 8:40s, quite happy with my qualy, very close to my PB for the Cooper. Was a joy to drive as always :)

Had a few PC gremlins all night. Trouble at log in then Chat in GPL packed up & then Igor failed on me after the race. That's why I didn't say well done to anyone so I'll say it now really to everyone who finished 'cos its tough. I like the track & learned it by revisiting it throughout the season ever since it was announced. I wouldn't mind it being used again. More  sort of trying to do a good time than racing other drivers.

Couldn't match Hendy's pace so was happy to get a gap to those behind. Couple of spins & one or two near do's but otherwise it was a case of keeping concentration.

Good: I set my new PB at the Green Hell with the 65s (even if it was 26" slower than Hendy's pole laptime...)

Bad: normally I focused more on the race pace than on the single laptime except on yesterday race. It resulted on a lot a small mistakes during the race. Luckily I didn't need any reset, otherwise I would finished worst than in the eightieth place.
Fun race anyway.

I'd like to start by taking my hat off to Hendy who was far too quick for me during qualifying and the race. I did ok but maybe could have got third but for lacks in concentration and sometimes just wringing the neck of my cooper for a little more caused the odd spin. I spent a full lap dicing with a honda which was great fun and whome I thought was Rob Venn but the results show otherwise? I know the ring quite well and would vote to race there again. Hendys says he expected more in the 8.40s but I have never been there- maybe I'll watch his replay and try to learn a little :)

Lol Hendy. I was in the 8.40's it was just that at the time I was at the start of the long straight...  :D

I span about a million times but it was fun because I got some racing - not terribly impressed with the menners at the start boys (ahem) but there you go.

My PC should be fully up and running in a week or so and I will update the website and finish the moderations before Easter.
