UKGPL Season 22 65 Intermediates Trophy

Welcome to the seventh round of the Intermediates Trophy for Season 22.

THE GREEN HELL - You all know it - or you should! 'Nuff said.

This is 'only' five laps but you may well have to hang around for ten minutes at the end of qualifying :(

The first lap will be fully moderated within the red zone. The red zone will cover the whole of the first sector of the first lap up to the bridge beyond Aremberg.

Qualifying may start before 9pm, if so, Reserve drivers should leave the server when 35 minutes of qualifying remains and only rejoin when 30 minutes of qualifying is left. This is to ensure that Full Time drivers get priority in joining.

Please restrict chat to pit messages if necessary, and this includes the end of the race, until all running drivers have completed the necessary laps.

The Intermediates races are run under Int Long rules and all incidents in the red zone on Lap 1, at least, will be moderated. For this race, the red zone covers the whole of the first sector of the first lap.


65 Patch: The 2.02 Release of the 65mod can and should be used. You need a working installation of the 65 mod to install the 2.02 Update. All the 65 Mod files can be found here (ftp://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/Mods/1965)

Oh Dear!

I knew something was wrong the moment I got off the line from pole like grease lightning. My Nurburg setup has never allowed me to start that quick before? Getting to the end of the long straight in totally the wrong gear and the feel of the brakes confirmed my worst fears, this was not my intended Nurburg setup. Wrong gear and braking took me up the embankment, upside down and used up my Shift-r. Any thoughts of a heroic recovery were quashed as I pulled in for my stop and go. That's when I noticed the setup loaded had about enough fuel for half race distance. :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

This was a track, in need of experience.  I'd dreamed of winning on it, since the Sim was new, back when simply driving on one of the toughest tracks, F1's have ever raced on, was a thrill.  :w00t:

With several cars to choose from, I picked on one for it's good handling, rather than it's outright speed.  This seemed a good choice, when I was immediately able to put in two good practice laps, and sit out the remainder, from 2nd on the grid.  It seemed likely, the race outcome would depend, on my ability to outpace, or to outstay rapid Ronnie.

I'd been expecting a long tussle, so was surprised by Ronnie's early off.  This meant the way was clear, and I was confident of my chances.  I'd finally reached the point where I knew every corner, and every contour of the Ring.  A cruel and punishing track, had at last become, fun and friendly.  The Brabham danced it's way around the first lap, and I could sense my lead was growing.

This was mastery indeed, and as I reached the end of the lap, a smile grew on my face.  Until a funny thing happened - the chicane tricked me!  The whole thing up and moved several feet to the left!  The car did a half spin, and I was forced to regain my composure.:blink:

With another lap under my wheels, and still leading, I approached the abberant spot again, all ready to give it some 'welly', so it stuck it's leg out, and turned me around, backwards!  Such chicanery suggests, I've thus far mastered the entire track, up until the last corner!  Grumble!

A three point turn, was not a part of my master plan.  Neither was Maxime's arrival from 2nd, as he threatened to put the boot in.  We approached the line, a car length apart.  I put my head down, held my chin up, and held the car to the road for three more laps.  I was chased all the way by Max, but managed to stay at the front, for the win.  Fantastic!  It's a friendly track, once you get all the corners nailed down . . . "Now, where's that hammer!"  ;D
 

Both Pole and fastest lap was faster in Novices :)

Edit because I forgot to congratulate Martin, a great victory here and a big well done.

Grats to Martin, Max and Dave.

Still gutted that in my haste to rename my setup with my new PB, I somehow managed to load a discarded practice setup with 2 laps of fuel for the race, what a plonker. That would have been some tussle at the front but well done again to Martin for keeping it together on a monster of a track. That fastest lap probably had a lot to do with my lack of fuel on-board so don't feel to hard done by Martin. On the subject of fast laps, having spent a bit of practice time with Hendy at the Ring I'm not surprised he was flying in the Novs.

Last up, apologies to Francesco and Du Fossa and anyone else for being one of those chatting while you were still out qualifying, sorry as I know it can be off putting.

Sorry for Ray, but good for the championship...

I don't like the Ring as there are too many places you can get lost. So I tried to make a stable setup to finish the race.
I did, and if not been blocked by a reseting and a spinning car, what made me spin and loose some places, it would have been a better result.
But good for the champinship...

Had a decent enough race though I found it hard to concentrate after the first lap or two , eyes glued to the track and either the front or rear of Dave R's well driven Honda , felt the tension more and more as time passed by on this torteuous track to the point where I never knew which gear I was in .

Another race long scrap (well almost ) with Dave saw his turn to take the podium and me the bridesmaid . Short of commiting suicide there aren't that many place to pass on this track unless one or other makes a mistake , which most folks did allowing me to inherit P3 for a time only for Dave to grab it off me going into T1 then me take it back again by outdragging the mighty Wazzamobile down the finish straight  :o
Our battle culminated in the dreaded T1 braking zone ( If ever a corner needed braking marks this is the one , I can never get this one nailed)  Dave was later on the brakes and we touched , just enough to spin me around 360deg  by the time the dust had settled and I got up to speed again Dave was off into the far away distance , then I made a hash off the next corner , went up the banking and that ruined all chance of catching Dave again . not sure if my car was damaged in the fracas but it didnt feel quite the same after and I didn't save the replay to check damage reports .

Well done to Martin (65 Ints Ringmeister?) Max and Dave commisserations to Ray ( forgetting to load the race set up is my trick ) though I have to admit to a little smile as we passed the U/D Honda though not as big as Martins   ;D

after Monza in mod69X, again a nice battle with you on the N'Ring !
I' m sorry that our cars touched on the first turn on lap 5.
As you went to the left of the track and do not let me enough space (I cannot blame you for that, you were defending your position), I had no other possibility than put a wheel (or 2 ?) on the grass and so it was very hard to correctly brake.

By the way, it was a very pleasant race and a nice fight from start to ...begin of lap 5 !
Grats to Martin and Maxime for their brillant race.
